Controlled Chaos

Clara Bennett

Doing the right thing means I have to die.
My secret precognitive abilities warned me so. There is no changing my fate, no matter how hard I try.
When I take a gunshot wound to the chest, my final resting place will be a shallow grave.
If only I knew who will pull the trigger.
My lifetime of running won’t help me now.
It’s too late for that.
There is no walking away from this moment or from the man I was destined to love for the rest of my life, no matter how little time I may have left.

Porter Anderson

I needed the help of the one woman who is avoiding me at all cost.
This is just my luck.
This is personal, and long-overdue where answers are on the line.
Getting her to agree is going to be impossible, especially when we met and I discovered that she sees only her impending demise in my eyes.
I’m going to have to get creative in convincing her to help solve my case and, more importantly, figuring out how to keep her alive.

Clara Bennett is the cousin of the sisters in the Bennett Dynasty series and she, like the others, has a certain gift or power. She knows how she's going to die and she knows who is going to kill her. But she sees things, too and envisions events that actually happen. She knows when she meets Porter Anderson that he's going to be the guy who pulls the trigger and she is never wrong.

Porter has a gift of his own...maybe it's more of a curse. Women cannot resist him. No matter how he tries to turn off the attraction, women continue to throw themselves at him and pretty much get stupid over him. Clara is immune to this "love voodoo" and when she's around, the other women don't seem attracted to Porter. He needs her around to turn that off because he's working on a case where there are a lot of young women around and he can't have them hanging on him.

This case is personal to him because it involves his mother, his deceased father, and the now stepfather. But he didn't know that until a little later in the book. He knew something wasn't right and it was a case, but he was going in under the guise of giving a speech at a graduation and Clara was his fiancee.

But things never go as they should and it doesn't take long for details to be revealed. The book is short, exciting, and suspenseful. It grabbed me from the beginning and didn't let go until the very end. There was simmering tension between Clara and Porter that ended in a fade-to-black love scene. That was okay with me. It is a romantic suspense and there was enough of both to sweep it to the end in a flourish.

I enjoyed this book very much, but I want to see what these characters look like. I can only imagine that Clara looks like the woman on the cover and the only description of Porter is that he has caramel-colored eyes. I want to see the rest. I want to know if Porter is as handsome as he is appealing, if that makes sense. I want to know what Clara looks like. She has dark hair and that's about all that is said. The descriptions of everything else were great, but I want to see the characters. That's just me, though. Some people don't mind. I like to paint a picture in my mind and I had very little to go on. It's a personal thing and I know not everybody shares my point of view.

But it was still a great book. An easy five stars for plot and intrigue. I'm anxious to read the next in the series.

Needs More Chaos, Less Control

A psychic reluctantly pairs with an FBI agent. She has a premonition that he will kill her. Still their attraction is strong and she is determined to help him complete his mission, even if it kills her.

This book was okay. Not much suspense. The helpful cult was rather obvious. The pacing is pretty good but there are too many secondary characters. The resolution is pat.

Could Have Been Good.
I found the premise of this book intriguing. But shortly after I began reading I realized it would have been more aptly title UNcontrolled Chaos thanks to the writing style.

You know how it feels when you're standing with a group of people in conversation and you realize that they all have a shared history that you don't. Awkward at best. Well, that's how I felt as I read this story. Like this was not book one of a series, but rather the last book in the series. I even double checked after I started reading because I couldn't shake the notion that there was a whole history here that I knew nothing about.

Apparently, some of the characters of this "new" series were from a previous series that I had not read.
Sadly, this created a less than enjoyable read for me. Perhaps the characters had been fleshed out in a previous story, but from the perspective of this book alone I found them to be very two-dimensional. Actions and decisions of the main characters seemed based on whims rather than any sort of character-appropriate response. This also made it difficult for me to feel much for Clare or Porter, since I spent the entire read feeling like I needed to catch up.

Truly, I hate writing a negative review. I actually cringe at the thought of bashing someone else's work. But there's no point in writing reviews if I'm not going to give you the truth as I see it. This book could have been good. It suffered for lack of a good editor who could have helped flesh out the characters and plot, as well as catching all the annoying typos and grammatical errors as well.

Great start this side of the Bennetts.

Great start this side of the Bennetts. Looking forward to the series. The abolitionists interestingness I liked the chemistry between Porter and Clara. These are fast paced, medium burn romances tied in with a mystery or three.
Clara has been trying to outrun her death for years. We vision triggered by the same man, her soul mate. Fate is a funny thing and even though she originally turned down his offer, she ends up heading to an island of evil and her death visions reality. It's a great escape and I highly recommend
