A proper and strait-laced student is very fond of a hoodlum who isn’t as bad as they seem. So, you know, this won’t be winning any points for originality to say the least.

If manga has tales as old as time, one of them might be the HILO (Hoodlum In Look Only) genre, or we just might be seeing an incredible surge of popularity in these sorts of stories recently. Either way, this is not new, to be blunt.

Which is not to say it’s bad! This is very much a confectionary book, something fun and cute (my two most abused words, even!) to enjoy between a meatier tome with some heft to it. Our leads are very into one another and less into communicating, slow creeping coupledom ensues.

Miyazen is the prim princess, so we’ve gone back from the spate of gender reversal stories such as I Belong To The Baddest Girl At School!, and Matsubayashi is the guy who looks tough but studies hard and makes his own rice balls. They are indeed positively adorable together.

Miyazen is constantly making overtures that Matsubayashi misses because he can’t believe she would, for example, watch the yakuza movies that he loves so they would have something to talk about. And Miyazen is too bashful to be any more forward and has a habit of taking things the wrong way.

Thus they get a little closer in fits and starts. I mean, this generally writes itself at this point, but it’s definitely got a very breezy style of getting where it’s going that I enjoyed. It’s got a very pure innocence that makes it go down quite smoothly and it is entirely heartwarming.

That said, I don’t know if I would recommend it over something like the title I mentioned before or, say, The Dangers in my Heart, which is coming at this kind of odd coupling from a very similar angle but has far more depth to it. Just depends on what you’re in the mood for at a given moment, honestly, because these are all worthwhile takes on this concept.

3 stars - but, as I often say, the good kind of 3 stars. I’ll definitely be putting this one on my list of ongoings; it’s got more than enough to recommend it, doubly so if you like the genre and have room for another title within it.

WHY IS NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THIS?! IT IS SO SO SO CUTE!!!

GAHHHHH!!!

I heard about this manga from a friend and ordered it ASAP! When it arrived, I "pushed" it on my husband to read before me since he enjoys romantic comedies and has been looking for manga titles to read that are similar to Teasing Master Takagi-san. (I haven't read that series but I felt the humor would be similar, just without the teasing. LOL) After he read it, he's like you need to read this ASAP and we BOTH absolutely loved this first volume!

It's a quick read with the cuteness between our main characters being SO adorable and heart-warming! My husband and I both laughed more than once as these characters try to get closer to one another/learn more about each other but misunderstandings of what the other was doing kept interfering. Not in a bad way mind you! A great example is how Miyazen watched yakuza movies she knew Sota would like and then would make references to him to try and start a conversation, but he just thought he misunderstood her because "no way she likes those movies" and wouldn't say anything else. Like GAH!

The art is very clean and really love how both characters are drawn as well as their expressions. It truly was a fun read all the way through and already pre-ordered volume two because I MUST know what happens next! (Definitely planning to preorder volume three too!)

Highly recommend if you're looking for a cute, drama-free romantic comedy of two precious characters!

ERMAIGERD THIS WAS SO CUTE!!!

The artwork was easy on the eyes, the MCs were the CUTEST and the storyline was so adorable I could SQUEE. I ran out and got the next three volumes in the series because I need more cute in my life right now, and this book delivered!

I will DEFINITELY be suggesting this in my store and highly recommend this if you need cuteness overload.

5, I loved this one and am trying to be calm and not devour the next books immediately, stars!

My thanks to NetGalley and Kondansha/Vertical Comics for an eARC of this book to read and review.

This story was very cute! I will admit at first I wasn't sold. The art wasn't grabbing me as much as my prior graphic novel read. And I felt like the short stories pasted together weren't flowing like I wanted them to. But as I kept reading I started to really love these two. Their interactions were super cute. There is some sweet humor and vulnerability. I would definitely read more from this series!

tl;dr
A warm high school romance with low stakes and endearing leads.

Thoughts
Do you love a cute story about blushing leads and mutual pining with just a dash of misunderstanding? Miss Miyazen has got you covered! On the surface, Sakura and Sota would appear to have nothing in common. She's "proper," and he's a "troublemaker." But the truth is they're both just a couple of sweet kids trying to get to know each other. It's an incredibly charming and low drama romance. There's little plot to be seen so far, with the story being largely a set of vignettes about their ongoing attempts (and failures) at trying to get closer. Misunderstandings are in the cute range rather than the frustrating one, punctuated with clean and incredibly cute artwork. If you're looking for a cute high school romance that'll make you feel warm inside, give this one a go.

Thanks to NetGalley and Vertical Comics for a review copy. All thoughts in this review are my own!

UDHDJDKSKZ WHAT A SWEET SHORT READ???

Please I'm so obsessed with this couple 😭 they are so adorable ,like this is the definition of a wholesome manga 😭😭💓

The shyness of the fmc AND the mmc regarding their feelings for each other??? The slow burn relationship arc as they go from crushes that awkwardly stare at each other to friends who STILL have OBVIOUS crushes??? I'm obsessed. Slice of life comics featuring cutesy couples like this will always be a (non guilty nor secret) pleasure of mine 💞

Adorable! Sakura Miyazen is a prim and proper young lady. Sorta Matsubayahi looks like a trouble maker, though he’s not. These two want to get to know another better but they’re nervous and tongue tied around one another. Volume is a series of snippets of their adorably awkward interactions.

Title: Miss Miyazen Would Love to Get Closer to You, Vol. 1 By Akitaka

4.5 Stars

In this delightful romantic comedy, Miyazen-san, the neat and tidy young lady, ends up seated in front to Matsubayashi-kun, a once mischievous and blunt classmate, on their first day of high school. Despite their desire for a friendly chat, their contrasting upbringings make conversation awkward at first. However, as they persist in getting to know each other, they discover the joy of simple interaction, leading to adorable blushing moments. As their relationship blossoms, readers will be eagerly rooting for them to become even closer.

Kawaī! "Miss Miyazen Would Love to Get Closer to You, Vol. 1" is an absolute gem of a manga!

The adorable blush-inducing moments between them are enough to warm even the coldest hearts. With its lovable characters and sweet storyline, this volume is a must-read for fans of heartwarming romantic comedies.

Likes:

The table of content looked really nice. It was also good organised, so one could read easily where the next chapter will be and so on.

The characters are relatable as they are all-time nervous and can't thing that one actually has the same interest as the other.

The drawings are all beautiful, specially the ones who cover the whole page. The blush is on point, the eyes have so much expression and the hands all look perfect.

Dislikes:

Slow pacing + no originality. It was more character driven the story than plot driven, but even with that it was kinda slow. If I consider the whole book from the beginning to the end it would be an average book that everyone already knows of as there wasn't anything special that let this book stand out.

The ending. It wasn't anything for a reader to want to read more. Nothing like a cliffhanger or the climax of a plot. It wasn't exciting enough.

This story is a very cute and fluffy high school romance! Matsubayashi is a former delinquent and Miyazen is the class "Princess". They appear as if they are total opposites, but actually have overlapping shared interests. This volume is very episodic. Each chapter is a short event or interaction between the main characters. It's all very cute, but it feels a little like I'm reading a manga version of newspaper short comics. There isn't really a plot except for both of the leads wanting to get closer to one another. The art style is very good. It's simplistic, but those few pages when the author goes out, their art style really shines.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!

I am normally not that much into the miscommunication trope, but it works so well in this adorable and hilarious manga!

Meet our two characters, we switch between them either with chapters or scenes, Sakura Miyazen and Sota Matsubayashi! These two really like the other (friendship or maybe more, I am leaning to the more at some points in the story), but so far they haven’t gotten much further than greetings. I was instantly in love with this manga with the first chapter. These two want to bond, want to get closer, want to do more than just say hi, but due to miscommunication in both parties things just end up in hilarious ways. For instance, Sakura really likes yakuza movies (or well she knows that Sota loves them and is now watching them) and tries to make references from them, some quite obscure. Sota immediately recognises said reference and wonders in shock if she likes that movie, but given how Sakura looks prim and proper he just dismisses it and thus things go hilariously funny when he tries to think of alternative situations and thus Sakura is confused. Their miscommunications never bore me because they always wield some unexpected results. Yes, you would think that it can get boring because if these two would just talk normally without assuming maybe it would all be solved instantly, but you know the miscommunications on both sides are just hilarious and adorable and it also brings them together. Yes, the miscommunication is actually helping them out. Though, I have to be honest, I wonder if it will be a whole series of that, I am not sure if I can handle it. The gimmick of it working out for them is fun for maybe 2 or 3 volumes, but after that, eh. I would like something else.

I liked that we get to see both sides of the situation. Not just Sakura trying her best and how she reacts to things, but also Sota!

Oh, and there is the fact that everyone is pretty much afraid of Sota because of his looks (you know the one)/his reputation (which I would think is not real) which is also not helping with communications. Yes, Sakura doesn’t mind, but her classmates are and at times that influences things (in funny ways of course).

I also like that the chapters are mostly short with a few longer ones. It is perfect, you don’t want to drag out things.

And the art? I really love it! The facial expressions especially are so fun~ I see that this is also the mangaka for Witch Life in a Micro Room, a manga I was planning on checking out already but I am now even more curious about.

All in all, this one made me laugh and I am just shipping these two. OK, let’s get the friendship first, but definitely want more afterwards~ I would recommend it.

Miss Miyazen Would Love to Get Closer to You 1 by Akitaka is one of my very favorite manga reads of last year. The story follows two high school classmates, one a rough and tumble looking delinquent, and the other a classy young lady. Both want to be friends with the other, but with such a large communication gap, will they ever see eye to eye?

This was such a charming, adorable, lovable, maddening, cavity-inducing story, and it is just the purest form of happiness. It is perfection. NO NOTES. Take my advice and read this quick, 4-volume series. You'll be glad you did.

The art and characters were sort of cute (mainly the girl, Miyazen) — and in any other setting I would love a” princess” type girl trying to tell yakuza gags — but somehow the delivery was so flat and boring I didn’t even feel compelled to finish the volume… I mean, I forgot it as soon as I read it.

Cute, but painfully slow.
The art is cute, the characters are cute, but the plot is glacial slow. It's not quite the vignette style I dislike, but it is perilously close.

Summary:

Sota Matsubayashi is new to this school, but he already has a reputation, thanks to his school. Now, he’s the class troublemaker, even if he acts like a prince. To put it lightly, this makes it hard to get to know people.

Meanwhile, Sakura Miyazen is the princess of the school. It was decided when everyone discovered she was rich and lived in the modern castle equivalent. She could have anything she wanted, in theory. But all she wants is to get to know Sota…and she’s too awkward and shy to make it easy.

Review:

Miss Miyazen Would Love to Get Closer to You 1 is a classic high school romance in many ways. We have two oblivious main characters who desperately want to chat - but can’t quite make it work. Sound familiar? We’ve all probably been there.

There are several fun and familiar tropes in this manga, starting with the bad boy stereotype (where he actually isn’t bad; he just looks that way) and the little princess archetype (who’s actually a sweet nerd).

If you’re looking for a slow-burn romance with a slice-of-life storytelling style, Miss Miyazen Would Love to Get Closer to You is absolutely worth checking out. The first volume doesn’t delve that deep, but I can see its potential going forward.

Miss Miyazen Would Love To Get Closer to You
-Completed Series

The chapters are short with 15 chapters in volume one. This series is wholesome, but do keep in mind the relationship development is slow paced in volume one. After looking into how many volumes were available, it is a shorter series with 4 volumes. If you are looking for a shojo for a younger audience and on the shorter side, this would be a good series to recommend.
The two main characters are adorable and we get a sense of their personalities. As both are awkward with one another and their thought process is what you would expect when you like someone, but don’t know how they feel. I like how we get the perspective of both in each situation/interaction.

Summary:
Matsubayashi looks like a delinquent so his classmates generally stay clear from him; however, the one person that speaks to him is the class princess- Miyazen. Miyazen tries to get closer to Matsubayashi by doing things like quoting yakuza movies that he is interested in. There are misunderstandings between the two since he finds it hard to believe that she would be quoting those kinds of movies. Although both are awkward with each other, their encounters cause them to slowly get closer to one another.

This is a cute story about two high schoolers sitting on opposite ends of the social spectrum who want to get to know each other better, but aren’t quite sure how to connect. Miyazen is a proper, well-mannered princess. Matsubayashi is working class and rough around the edges, but with a good heart, though he has a reputation as a bruiser from his days in junior high. Their positions at either end of the social spectrum set them apart from other students, but that makes perfect conditions for them to connect.

The comedy comes from the two characters making assumptions about how the other will react in a given situation and completely overthinking what they should do. In reality, the two characters are really more alike and with each chapter they gradually begin to realize that fact.

The dialogue is cute and sweet, and Miyazen and Matsubayashi have fun banter and a good dynamic. My only critique is that we don’t really see much of the world outside other interactions, so we don’t have much context for understanding them as characters. However, this is the first volume and I am sure we will see more of their backstory as the manga progresses. All in all, a cute story!

I have a hard time finding a wholesome high school romance - but I’m so happy to have found one in Miss Miyazen Would Love to Get Closer to You!

This story is wholesome and both kids are totally unsure about their feelings and what they want, but they know they want to get to know each other better. Miyazen tries to learn more about Matsubayashi but when she quotes his favourite movies out of nowhere - it ends up a little awkward, but also has Matsubayashi shocked and intrigued she would know about them.

There is very little pressure to get these two together and while the chapters are very short and fly by, the story takes its time, letting these two kids be wholesome and awkward and just want to spend time together.

Consider me hooked and I’m super excited to get my hands on the next installment. I feel like this is a series I could read all in one day.

Well, I finished reading this and immediately checked out the other 3 volumes from Libby. This was just…sugar-sweet!

Good girl Sakura Miyazen and (supposdely) bad boy Soto Matsubayashi are mutually crushing on each-other, and both are SO BAD at making a connection. Each chapter is only a few pages, but they all manage a hilarious setup and payoff, making me root for the two dorks as they try to flirt and fail so, so hard.

But there is progress in this book, and, looking at the blurb for the last book in the series, I’m glad to report that progress continues! See, now I’m INVESTED. I want to see how these kids fumble and flail and eventually make it.

This is a perfect fit for when you just need to feel good and not work too hard to do it. There’s no angst. No sweeping romance. No high stakes. Just young adults being so, so bad at communication, but in a way that hurts no one. Not even themselves.

Wow, I never expected to make a review at a manga that I actually liked. I kinda stoped for a period to make reviews, but now I'm finally back on line, at least on Goodreads and Netgalley.
Now let's go to this review, I started this book cause of the cute cover, I have a wickness if I see an amazing cover, I'll read it when I have the occasion. Cause of the fact that I chose my books from the cover, sometimes I get disappointed, not this time though.
I fell in love with this book. It's so cute and fun, it's impossible to not be amazed of it. I need to say, it was too short, I need more, I want to find more about those two. I'd say that I'll sure read the next volume but with me and my reading changes, this is never something guaranteed.
Whatever, I think you realized till now that I liked this book and at the moment I'll like to see what happens next.

Miyazen and Matsubayashi are total opposites but they'd love to get to know each other! The story follows Miyazen, a upperclass girl, and Matsubayashi, a guy who has a bad reputation despite being a decent dude, and how they try to interact with each other to become friends. The teens constantly miscommunicate their intentions toward each other but start to become closer as they get to know one another.

The manga was super cute and would be great for teens. I thought the artwork was great; clean, easy to understand each panel, and appealing to the reader. I definitely would pick up more volumes of this in the future. 5/5 stars

Thank you to Kondansha Comics and Netgalley for sending me this volume to review.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable and heartfelt read focusing on the early moments of romance and the anticipation of first love. This was a wholesome story following two individuals, that on the surface, look like they may not be suited but we follow along their budding romance journey seeing little snapshots of their interactions - the sweet moments, the cringey moments, the caring moments.

Funnily enough it made me think of my own relationship as I met my partner in high school and I feel that is why I have connected to so much to the story and the characters. This story was funny and beautifully illustrated and is an easy-going read I would recommend to anyone.
