With a Broken Wing

From the outside, my life looked about as perfect as it could get.

ANDY
Demetri Carlisle was powerful, strict, and intimidating. He was everything I’m not, and being stuck with him for the summer put me in his direct control. Working for my best friend’s new brother-in-law was supposed to be a good opportunity; one that would allow me to travel around the country. But when choices I made in the past loomed over me, I was forced to choose between keeping a secret I was sure I’d never tell and the man I couldn’t stay away from. He called me Little Miss Sunshine, but if only he knew.

DEMETRI
She was too young, too innocent. So why did I give in when my new sister-in-law suggested I hire the woman to manage my travel for the summer? Behind a mask of bright colors and a smile that stopped traffic was a woman with a secret, one I became determined to uncover the first time I saw her cry. One thing was for sure, I wanted to protect and cherish her as badly as I wanted to see her fall apart.

She weakened my judgement, and weak men always fall.

Meg Becker received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Writing from the University of Kansas, but she has known she'd be a writer since she wrote her first story in the first grade. Today, she finds herself at home in a field of sunflowers, by a lake in the mountain, or anywhere with a good view, but she resides in Kansas City with her amazing husband that is nothing like the broody men she writes about in her books. She's a sucker for a happy ending, and she can often be found reading with an iced coffee or glass of red wine, quite possibly both.

When she's not reading or writing spicy romance, Meg is likely learning a new hobby, cuddling with her two dogs and cat, or performing the soundtrack to RENT from behind the steering wheel of her car. During football season, she puts down her pen every Sunday to cheer for the Kansas City Chiefs. Visit her online at www.authormegbecker.com.

4.5☆ Heartbreakingly Beautiful and Raw

Wow this was such a good read i mean it literally had me in all my feels and my heart hurting ♡ Andy my gosh she's just so utterly broken behind her sunshine mask it just thoroughly breaks your heart, you're just rooting for her the whole time to have her light at the end of her personal hell tunnel. Books like this always hit close to home for me so make sure u check your TWs b4 reading.

Andy may be all sunshine and rainbows to everyone she crosses paths with but it's just a calculated mask she wears that hides her true trauma and pain lurking beneath the surface. She numbs her trauma so she can function but most days even that's not a possibility. Broken by those meant to love and protect her, she hides the pain from everyone but the only one who fights her demons to protect her her twin brother Auston.
When she loses her job because she had too many mental health days, her best friend lands her a job with her new brother in law but Demetri is the definition of grumpy and she is sunshine incarnate but she needs a job so she accepts to put their distaste for one another aside to work together. As his personal travel assistant she travels around with him whilst her secures financial backers for his new project but Demetri has a short fuse when things aren't to his liking and yelling at his staff is nothing new but for someone like Andy with a traumatic past his heated words send her demons spiraling. Being in forced proximity naturally things begin to heat between the two and whilst Demetri can see the smile she wears each day is fake he doesn't truly know how broken she is, things between them are anything but smooth and the push and pull between them leaves Andy feeling more broken.
But the problem with lies and pasts is they never stay hidden for long, a past moment of desperation comes back to haunt Andy forcing her into a corner she doesn't know if she can get out of and so she turns to Demetri for help but instead he leaves her in pieces on the floor trying to pick up her shattered heart ♡ Love has a way of creeping up on people and forgetting her won't be as easy especially when he learns of all she's endured in her life, he'll want to protect her at all costs but will he realize all he wants in time? Or will her past demons win once and for all.

Definitely Recommend Reading 📚

sunshine incarnate

Meg was absolutely right when she told me I’d love dimetrei. When I tell you this man put me through all these emotions sometimes on the same page 🤤🤭🤨🥵🙄😘😑🥵😌😊😌😊😌😊😌😊 WE LOVE HIM OKAY. From the very beginning i knew like Andy I’d be putty in his hands. Easily knew it wouldn’t take him long to fall completely in love with this fiery redhead. I am totally in awe of Andy i identify with her in a way I haven’t with many mfc and I laughed when she laughed, cried when she cried. To me that’s when you know you love a book. ALSO THE WILLIAMJULES CRUMBS I WAS PROMISED DID NOT DISAPPOINT my babies are going to be parents. I miss them already actually and I’m super excited for book 3 soon. Meg is an amazing writer and just has this way of making you feel and fall and connect with her characters. Ugh did I mention i loved this book!!!!!

What a good story. Andy seems like she has it all together. However, that's not really the case. Her past lives rent free in her head so to speak. On the outside she is this fun, confident, outgoing woman. But when she's alone, that leaves, and the anxiety appears. It's sad to read about, but it's also something many people battle behind closed doors. The author did a wonderful job writing about some very delicate situations.

Demetri is a workaholic who is also a hard ass. He's powerful and intimidating. He doesn't do relationships because he barely has time for himself, let alone someone else. Demetri owns a company. Jules (she's from the first book) suggests he hire Andy as his personal travel agent since she lost her job at the travel agency.

When he does, he's instantly annoyed by her outgoing personality. But as time goes on, that changes. The tension and spice are definitely there. This book has a great plot and great characters. I really enjoyed it.

My thoughts: This book balances on that thin line, of what children go thru when they are abused and how it follows them into adulthood and the struggles they continue to cope with, I say this is a thin line because I think this topic is extremely hard to write about and this author did it flawlessly. This book has some sensitive subjects (check trigger warnings!) but it was handled in an awareness type way and not brushed under the rug, and I so appreciate that as I feel strongly about these subjects. I really enjoyed the characters and had no idea this was a "book 2" so now i need to read book 1! I do feel like the ending was a bit rushed, but overall this was a great love story, that was raw, and honest and really shows even broken people can find love, So thank you so much for conveying that message, also the message that getting help is so important too (swipe for author note) Thanks for the wonderful book @katieandbreypa & @authormegbecker

I absolutely loved Andy but I don’t like how flippant she was at some point where sometimes she’s like total bad ass and then other points due to trauma. She will shut down on herself. It’s very hard to see her like that because it’s kind of like she has split personalities. You never know which side you’re going to get it. I did get emotional, watching her struggle with that and then seeing how scared she could get in situations based off her home life Demetri on the other hand of course, had a dirty mouth on him. They were amazing together and I loved how how protective he was of her. I did find some of his behavior really concerning, he didn’t know what she went through but with us knowing the background with Andy, I definitely did worry about some of his behavior, and I thought we were gonna go down a different path there. He definitely is of course the typical hot asshole, but some of his behavior does give me warning signs towards abuse, so if that is triggering to you, you may want to take that into consideration on this book also does mention attempted suicide arm child abuse, drugs and alcohol abuse please keep that in mind when you’re going to pick up the book that you want to check all the trigger warnings before you jump in overall though I definitely love the story and I definitely felt emotional reading it, but it was a great novel with amazing spice, and I believe that it is extremely well written.

The humiliation the heroine had to go through at the first 25% or so was incredibly painful to read. It didn't help that the main leads have absolutely no chemistry together. They make an awkward pairing and not even the supposedly sexy and romantic scenes could make me root for them. I'm surprised I was able to finish this because the force of wanting to dnf was really strong with this one.

this book was EVERYTHING; ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING. i did not go into this book with much of any thoughts towards it, since i didn't know what to expect -- but WOW. i am obsessed with this book, and honestly, obsessed is such an understatement.

first and foremost, let's discuss the plot/storyline. i really liked how interesting it was. it had the forced proximity trope in it, along with the "work place romance" trope too; both written very well by the author. i also really liked that the author didn't make it a "boss/secretary" trope, since i feel like that gets done a lil too much. i liked the whole "travel agency" thing that was going on with Andy; it gave the story a different vibe. i also really like that Demetri was obviously very rich, but didn't flaunt it. it gave me "humble billionaire" vibes, and i love it. i think the thing that i loved the most about this book was the realness it gave. the battle with drugs and alcohol that Andy went through? it felt so real; scratch that, it was so real. the author really represented addiction so well, and i give all my kudos to her. i really like how the author did not glorify addiction in any way, and she truly showed the "dark" sides to it; like depending on it or the bad sides of having a dealer. all things that i don't feel like always get represented correctly in modern society (with books, tv shows, movies, etc.).

now, let's discuss the characters. starting with Andy; god she has such a place in my heart now. i love how strong she is, yet we still read about her breaking down. she shows that she's not always the strongest, and that it doesn't make her any less human. i really like how the author demonstrates "the mask" that so many of us wear, through Andy. it really allows for a reader to connect and relate to her on a deeper level; which is always so appreciated. as a reader, i think the thing i loved reading about Andy was the character growth. not only do we see her let her guard down and allow herself to love someone else; but we also see her grow out of her addiction with drugs and alcohol. now, Demetri. i don't think that i have ever loved a man so fast like i love him. he is EVERYTHING i could want from a man and more -- and i am so jealous of Andy. i love how possessive and protective that Demetri was; and how he really commanded respect from everyone. i think he really represents a good boss, in my opinion. but i think the thing i loved the most about Demetri's personality is him being sweet and caring towards Andy, wanting to take care of her and be the rock she needs. it shows how much he truly cared about her -- and it was so beautiful to read about. as for the side characters, all great additions. i loved Auston, and i think he was a great brother to Andy. gave her the tough love that she desperately needed; all while still taking care of her. i thought that Kate was good, as well, although we don't see much of her. as for Jules, i thought she could have been a better friend. she was a little too wrapped up in her husband to fully be there for her friend, but then played the "i don't want to lose you" card when things got rough. i just with Jules had been a better friend towards Andy. as for William, he was fine. i do think he was funny at times, but he wasn't involved in the book enough for me to have a real opinion.

now, let's discuss that ending, shall we? the next paragraph will be spoiler central... read at your own risk.
that ending had be crying, screaming, throwing up, and then swooning all within a few chapters. this author really has you FEEL what the characters feel, and that's how you know she's a good writer. first, the fight that Andy and Demetri have when she finally comes clean about everything? heartbreaking. i didn't expect him to react good, but i also didn't expect him to react badly either. i mean, leaving Andy there on the floor, on her knees, crying? that shattered my fragile heart into a million and one pieces, let me tell you. but what i do like is that he threw her a birthday party (even if she didn't want it, and hated her birthday). but what i like the most is that Demetri stood up to her when Fisher came (who i hate, btw). the whole scene where he was like, "come near my girl again and i'll kill you" had me SWOONING for him. i never wished a man was more real until that scene. but i think the scene that followed afterward was my favorite of the whole book. i think that's where Andy finally learned that she's not "unlovable" because she's "broken"; and Demetri showed that to her. when he found her on the floor, i thought she was dead -- if i'm being honest. i did not think this book was going to get a happy ending, but i'm glad it did. because that epilogue??? yes please, god i loved it. i just KNOW that Demetri and Andy made it past the epilogue and lived happily ever after. honestly, they both deserve it.

this book, i won't ever get over. this book was so good in so many ways that i cannot even explain. i recommend it to EVERYONE

"I would love to make you, sunshine, but I don't think you understand what I'd do to a woman with an attitude like yours. It'd be the ride of your life, and I'm not so sure you'd survive it."
Demetri Carlisle was powerful, strict and intimidating. He was everything Andy wasn't, and being stuck with him for the summer put her in his direct control. The chance to work for her best friend's brother in law was supposed to be a good opportunity for Andy to travel. However when choices she made in the past loom over her, Andy is forced to choose between keeping a secret she never wanted to share and the man she can't stay away from. He calls her Sunshine, but if he only knew... Andy was too young and innocent, so why did Demetri hire her? Because behind the mask of bright colors and a brilliant smile, Andy was a woman with a secret, one he intended to uncover when he saw her cry. One thing was for sure, Demetri wanted to protect and cherish her as badly as he wanted to see her fall apart... She weakened his judgment and weak men fall.
I was intrigued by the summary of this book because I wasn't sure where it was going to go at first. I will say the book covers some heavy topics so please check the trigger warnings before reading. Andy is suffering with some mental health issues brought on by a terrible childhood. She doesn't necessarily have the best coping mechanisms, which also come back to bite her in the story, but she has a supportive brother and friend network who don't allow her to disappear. I actually thought Meg Becker did an amazing job of handling mental health issues and managed to make her character believable and relatable.
I liked that side of the story but I craved the romance narrative between Demetri and Andy. I didn't know how bad I needed the story until I got it. Demetri is the perfect level of overprotective, controlling, grumpy sweetheart you could want. And he is quick to see through Andy's mask, even if he doesn't know what he is missing. The two had some intense tension between them and the banter they had really made even the non-steamy moments an engaging read. I honestly couldn't get enough of these two or this book.
I didn't realize this was a second book when I first read it but lucky for me it can be read as a standalone, although it did make me want to read the first one. Mainly so I could learn about the relationship with William and Jules because they seem like super cute characters. Mostly though I want like a million more stories about Andy and Demetri. The book is quick and engaging and also able to address intense topics with a kind heart.

If you are interested in this book, you should make sure you don't have triggers regarding mental health, read the trigger warnings first!

With A Broken Wing is the story of Andy and Demetri. Demetri owns a company that is looking for investors for an app they created. After losing her job at a travel agency, Jules (from the first book) suggests to Demetri that he hire Andy to be his personal travel agent, making sure the trips he has to make to pitch to investors go smoothly.

At first he is annoyed by Andy. She is too bubbly, wears too bright clothes, and seems to always smile too much. But after being forced to travel together because of the job, she starts to get under his skin.

Andy has always been a confident, strong willed woman. She's always laughing and joking with her best friends, and she's the sun that everyone revolves around.
But what they don’t know is that when the door of her apartment closes behind her, the smile fades, and the strong woman becomes an anxiety ridden shell of herself. She has issues that lead to more trouble than she needs, and they are catching up to her fast.

Travelling with Demetri means that she can't always hide that side of her anymore. And sooner or later he will find out that she has been lying about a big part of her life.

I liked that the author didn't shy away from such a heavy subject. The book shows that you never know what is playing in someone's head. It's so easy to cover up the hurt and anxiety you're feeling, instead of asking for help. Not wanting to bother anyone and thinking that people will think less of you if they know about a past you didn't even have control over.

The third book is set to come out in February, and I'm really looking forward to it.

Title: With a Broken Wing
Author: Meg Becker
Series: The Butterflies Series #2
Rating: ☆☆☆☆ 4.5/5

I really liked how Meg Becker didn't just write the usual grumpy/sunshine book. Andy the fmc looks all sunshine on the outside but is secretly dealing with anxiety and depression. I think it's nice when authors talk about mental illness in books. It's something that's realistic that some people deal with everyday. I also appreciated that the author was able to talk about how children who go through abuse carry that with them into adulthood and the struggles that they deal with. I think the author handled several sensitive topics with grace.  Of course I loved Dimitri's broody, dominant self. I love grumpy men. I think certain guys just need that one woman to come into their life, once that happens their walls come crashing down.

This story shows that no matter what someone goes through or might be dealing with, anyone can find their person and be loved. With a Broken Wing is such a raw and deep story that really spoke to me. It took me no time at all to finish this book. I highly recommend this book.

Thank you @authormegbecker and @katieandbreypa for gifting me a copy of this book for an honest review. All thoughts are my own!

Make sure to check the trigger warnings because there are several sensitive topics.

This book honestly was wonderful. Having to watch a MC go through panic and anxiety was so relatable. The reasoning itself wasn’t but the two themselves were exactly something I needed to see on paper.

Andy is “sunshine”, but it covers up everything she’s been trying to hide for years. She puts on a facade for everyone, herself included. But how do you keep hiding your deepest secret when others are trying to crack your exterior piece by piece?

Demetri is a hardass who works himself to the bone. He doesn’t have time to worry about being in a relationship, let alone worrying about anyone but himself. That is, until Andy all but falls in his lap thanks to his new sister-in-law.

So how can two people who are almost complete opposites change each other for the better?

This story had me eating out of the palm of Demitri/Andy’s hands

Good grief… I cannot begin to explain the similarities of my life to this story. Andy’s trauma and past self embodies a lot of the experiences I’ve dealt with in my own life. The pills, wanting to forget, the abuse, the need to escape… I felt triggered from my own traumas and yet, I absolutely could not put it down. The spark and electricity between these characters is intoxicating!! I loved The Butterfly Effect (Book 1) but this second book is my go-to, ride or die and would 10/10 recommend. What a story, thank you for writing it, Meg Becker. It’s absolutely fantastic!

I went into this completely blind. I didn't know what to expect - and tbh it's probably a good thing I did.

The story has that grumpy/sunshine "touch her and die" vibe that I absolutely love, it has just the right amount of spice.

But I honestly did not expect the plot to go down the rabbit whole of drug abuse and physical abuse. Or have the whole stalker vibe that came with Andys past coming back to haunt her. The book navigates so many different things and I'm happy I read it.

All in all an enjoyable read. But look up TWs!

This was such an entertaining page turning book!

I was supposed to post a feature on it on instagram on the day of its release, but while I was preparing for posting, I read the blurb and I was enticed beyond understanding!

I immediately picked it up and started reading, and boy I was hooked!

The characters caught my attention, their characteristics were super funny and the relationship between them was intriguing, I loved the spice in this book and I was entertained by lots of hotel scenes lol

I completely recommend and will be rereading next year!

This book was simply wonderful! It does have some triggering topics but it really brought the story together.

Andy and Demetri had such a fiery, sweet romance. They both knew how to push each other’s buttons but had a soft spot for each other. They both would walk to the ends of the Earth for each other.

I really enjoyed this book. Overall, it was a really sweet and spicy romance. I can’t wait to read more from this author! ☺️

The MC' s Andy and Demetri remind so much of
Not only myself who deals with both anxiety and depression but today's modern society. It was so breath taking to see this duo support each other . The story starts of light and upbeat but then takes a dark turn and before you know it you have no pages left . Meg you have me ADDICTED!!! 5/5 WOULD HANDS DOWN RECOMMEND!!

With A Broken Wing by Meg Becker
.
Everyone has a past. Everyone tries to not let that past show on the outside when on the inside they’re broken and screaming.
Andrea “Andy” is sunshine on the outside to everyone that knows her. The happy mask she wears each day is vital to her survival because without it she would crumble.
Landing a job with her best friends new brother-in-law as his personal travel assistant is a godsend after losing her job at a travel agency.
Grumpy is a mild way to describe Demetri Carlisle. A successful businessman he is serious in all aspects of life and Andy’s constant sunshine optimism annoys him because no one can be that happy all of the time. The thing he doesn’t know? Andy is suffering from debilitating anxiety accompanied by PTSD and is holding herself together by a thread hiding the pain with pills and alcohol.
As their attraction grows and feelings emerge Andy’s past catches up with her and threatens her chance at happiness.
Will they be able to move past Andy’s demons? Or will Demetri cut his losses and run?
.
Definitely enjoyed this book since it highlights what living with anxiety and depression can really look like. Not enough people really know how debilitating it can be. The story was captivating and I was surprised by Demetri’s attentiveness and care.

Grumpy/Sunshine but fake sunshine? Andy is sunshine on the outside but all dark and twisty on the inside. A story of mental health struggles, falling in love, and overcoming a terrible past, this book is emotional. I enjoyed this. Dimitri was all brooding and wealthy and dominant. Good girl, mine, possessive, the spice was really good. Overall, I'd recommend.

The absolute CHOKEHOLD this book has on me is unmatched. As if the first one wasn't phenomenal, then Meg gives us this?! Perfection; and I do not say that lightly. The way she incorporates real life struggles, with hot kinks, and gives all the feels is amazing. I can't wait for the next book, because I will feel true withdrawals without these characters.

The dialogue was amazing.
The twist and turns? Amazing.

When I first read the blurb of this book it thought it was another love story but it’s so much more. It touches on a lot of topics such as abuse, mental health, stalkers and more. Definitely look into the TWs before reading.

Reading Andy’s struggle is so hard but important, I think the author did an excellent job conveying Andy’s feelings and struggles. A main part of the book and in life is that “YOU ARE NOT ALONE”.

I loved the tension, spice and the characters but I also truely love that the auditor has written about these topics, they’re usually not talked about brushed over.

I also had no idea this was a sequel (it’s okay to read as standalone) but I’m definitely hoping to read book 1.

Overall it was a great romance that was honest, raw and shows that even broken people can find love.

Thanks for the wonderful book @katieandbreypa & @authormegbecker

" 'Why is it you're Little Miss Sunshine for everyone else, but you have such an attitude with me?' "

With A Broken Wing, the second in Meg Becker's Butterflies series, comes the tale of Andy (Andrea) and Demetri.

I went into this installment nearly blind, and I am glad I did. This book was nearly everything to me, it kept me in a trance from the first chapter at the wedding.

With A Broken Wing is a heartbreaking, romantic tale of two people in desperate need of each other. Andy, fresh off a job layoff, says yes to working for Demetri, her best friend's brother in law. Andy is so special, and didn't deserve anything that happened to her in her childhood. She is so strong, despite everything thrown against her.

And Demetri? I knew I would fall hard for him from the moment he was jealous of Andy dancing with Jacob. He has the "touch her and die" vibes that everyone loves, and the way he plans her birthday party even though they had a huge fight.

And how is no one talking about the obvious Twilight reference?

Do beware of the trigger warnings before jumping into this.

" 'To say I like you might be an understatement. I want to absolutely fucking destroy you, sunshine. I want to make you crumple at my feet.' "

Tropes // grumpy x (fake) sunshine, office romance, forced proximity

TW // self harm, suicide attempts (rescued), toxic family relationships, drug abuse, talks of therapy, panic attacks, calming methods not working
