The genre of fantasy fiction has seen booming success ever since its inception and has gathered a fanbase worldwide. And 'The Deceivers' by Elizabeth Mitchell is an exceptional piece of work of that particular genre. The story revolves around the protagonist, Cami, whose life has been filled with nothing but trouble; as she has continued to just exist, scraping by.
The book focuses on the unexpected dangers that befall her after her seventeenth birthday. And her life turns upside down as she finds herself in a magical world called Olmerias with stranger people claiming themselves to be her family and trying to escape what is known as "the Deceiver." The prologue to the book begins in media res and sets the tone of the work, diving right into the action and creating a sense of mystery, as you find yourself intrigued by the bleak conversation of the two characters. And the first chapter shifts the entire focus to the life and surroundings of Cami. What happens next? I urge you to discover that yourself!
The author has done a remarkable job of creating the world of Olmerias with its own societal rules and structures. And the characterization complements this enchanted world. All of the major characters possess well-rounded personalities and feel life-like. But it is with Cami that the reader will get most intrigued. This is her story and everything that happens throughout the plot is, in one way or other, connected to her. The choice of narration for just the prologue is in the third-person omniscient style, patched with direct dialogue from the characters, helping the readers get insights into the thought processes of the characters. And the rest of the story is told from the perspective of Cami. The plot remains well-paced throughout and is engaging from cover to cover. I highly recommend that you pick this up and try it out for yourself!
