About the author

Malayattoor Ramakrishnan was born on 30 May 1927 as K. V. Ramakrishna Iyer in Kalpathi in Palakkad (Palghat) in a family of Kerala Iyers.
After earning the B.L. degree he started his career as an Advocate.Later he started his work as a sub-editor in The Free Press Journal in Mumbai. He was a contributing cartoonist to Shankar's Weekly. He is also credited with the first Malayalam translation of Bram Stoker's Dracula apart from translating Sherlock Holmes novels into Malayalam.
In 1957, he entered the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).The memoirs of his long career as a bureaucrat are narrated in his work Service Story – Ente IAS Dinangal.
alayattoor wrote his best known work - Verukal (Roots) in 1965. It is a semi-autobiographical work which tells the story of a family of Tamil speaking Iyers who settled in Kerala. This won him the Kerala Sahithya Academy Award.[1] In 1981, he resigned from the Indian Administrative Service in order to devote his time to writing. It was during the period 1981 to 1997 that his most famous works emerged from his pen. Among his other famous novels are Yakshi, Yanthram, Nettoor Mathom and Amritham Thedi. For Yanthram, he was awarded the Vayalar Award.

Family is one of the simplest yet most complicated things we will have to deal with in our life. It all depends on your family dynamics and personality that decide your outlook towards it.

This is a very important novel by Malayatoor, telling us about family dynamics and the importance of returning to our roots.

Verukal (Roots) by Malayattoor helped reinforce one of my convictions :- That there are infinitely talented authors amongst the regional language authors in India who simply go unnoticed because they are unaccessible to a wider audience; Ever the more reason for these gems to be translated to English and other languages. Though it is true that a large part of a work’s essence is lost in translation, it nevertheless helps in understanding other cultures and writing styles.

Malayattoor Ramakrishnan had previously surprised me with his blessed writing through Yakshi, a psychological thriller. In Verukal he explores a completely different theme and appeals to a completely different emotion:- nostalgia and connection to one’s ancestry and lineage.

Malayattoor penned Verukal in 1966 and it is evident that he draws heavily from his life as an IAS officer. The novel is set in the conditions in which he grew up, a Tamil Iyer family. The initial mood the novel set for me was one of discomfort with the characters speaking in Tamil. But soon I started to love the conversations in the novel and by the end of the book I was completely in love with the character and his family mileu. Verukal won Malayattoor the Kerala Sahithya Academy award in 1967 which anyone who reads the book will immediately attest to be a well deserved accolade.

Verukal is the story of Raghu, an ambitious IAS officer and his family. Raghu is married to Geetha, a shrewish, modern and domineering woman. Raghu decides to build a new house which Geetha finds too small for her taste. She coxes Raghu into selling his ancestral property on the banks of Periyar, which would fetch him enough money to build a 4500 sq.ft home that would be to Geetha’s fancies. This is where Verukal enters its theme.

Raghu writes a letter to his elder sister Ammulu, saying he has decided to sell the ancestral property and asks her to make the necessary arrangements and sets off to his native village to seal the deal. From here the plot thickens and starts developing across multiple strands which all converge and find solace in Raghu’s final decision:- To not sell his ancestral property. How Raghu reached such a decision makes up the story of this novel.

Verukal is a journey through Raghu’s past and evolution into the character he is today, and while doing so it explores the themes and people who have come into his life. Malayattor’s golden pen deals with even the subtlest of emotions dexterously and to his credit, brings in a host of stories, which I am sure, every reader would be able to connect to. The smallest of quarrels between siblings, growing to be an elephant in the room and ends up seperating them, memories of old people who often refuse to demonstrate their love, superstitions that dictate the life of common people, sweet memories of teenage love (Raghu’s infatuation to Janu, the mahout’s daughter is one of the most endearing memories in the story. I am sure it would ring a bell with everyone and bring back memories of that special person) and what not! Verukal is not just Raghu’s story, but of every one of us.

Verukal also has deeply disturbing side plots. The part where Ramu, infected with Rabies, dies is particularly disturbing. So is the portion where Kitchamani ends up killing his guard. When Malayattoor was desribing the scenes, I could not help but see the image in my mind. And when Kitchamani ends up breaking Nair’s skull with the stone, I could hear the sound of his skull being crushed. “CRUNCH”!!!

Verukal is an invitation to a journey. It is also a reminder of many things that is amiss in our contemporary lifestyle. Kids who grow up to be plastic dolls, not knowing their parent’s affection, completely at loss to appreciate their mother tongue, people who embark on a quest for money, while forgetting their roots and languishing that development doesn’t reach their villages, even though it is in their power to effect changes, the impermanence of human condition where the wheels of time turn a full cycle making the poor rich and vice versa.

Verukal is a brilliant portrayal of seemingly simple lives which are complex when observed carefully. Some of the characters which appear to be negative in shade turn out to be victims of their times and we end up sympathizing and often loving them. An example would be Saraswathy’s mother-in-law who finds fault with everything she does, but in fact is jealous of Saraswathy because she was widowed early and had to lead an ascetic and lonely life because the Society has imposed such restrictions on her.

Some of the characters stand out and make us acknowledge their presence. The headstrong Ammulu, Raghu’s sister is one such character. Being meted out a servant’s treatment by her own grandparents and completely ignored by her father, she rises in life with her sheer grit and determination. Laksmi, the pampered last child of the family, also has her moments. Another character who is very powerful is Paatta, Raghu’s grandfather. Raghu’s college life is filled with funny moments and reminds us of the fools that life makes out of us, despite our utmost effort not to fall prey to such traps.

Verukal was translated into English in the name Roots and hence is available to the non-malayali audience also. Verukal is not a story that will just entertain you, it is brilliance held captive in letters that will make you think. It is a wonderful analysis of the human mind.

കഴിഞ്ഞ പത്തു ദിവസമായി തിരക്കിട്ട ജോലിയായിരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ ജോലിയെല്ലാം കഴിഞ്ഞു രാത്രിയില്‍ വളരെ വൈകി റൂമില്‍ എത്തിച്ചേര്‍ന്നാലും ഒന്നും ചെയ്യാന്‍ തോന്നാത്തത്ര മടുപ്പും........ഒടുവില്‍ ഒരു ചെറിയ പുസ്തകം എടുത്തു ഒറ്റയിരിപ്പില്‍ വായിച്ചു തീര്‍ത്തു........

ഒരു ആസ്വാദനം : -
വേരുകള്‍ - മലയാറ്റൂര്‍ രാമകൃഷ്ണന്‍

മരങ്ങളുടേതെന്ന പോലെ മനുഷ്യരുടെയും വേരുകള്‍ മണ്ണിലാണ് എന്ന ഒരു വാചകമാണ് എന്നെ ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിലേക്കെത്തിച്ചത്.

ഓണ്‍ലൈന്‍ കൂട്ടായ്മ്മകളിലെല്ലാം ഗൃഹാതുരത്വ ചിന്തകളും രചനകളും ചിത്രങ്ങളുമെല്ലാം എന്നും സ്ഥാനം പിടിക്കുന്ന ഇന്നത്തെ കാലത്ത്; ഞാന്‍ ജനിക്കുന്നതിനു മുന്‍പേ എഴുതപ്പെട്ട ഈ ചെറിയ ഒരു നോവല്‍ അതിന്റെ വിഷയം (ഗൃഹാതുരത്വം )കൊണ്ടും അവതരണ ഭംഗി കൊണ്ടും വളരേയേറെ ശ്രദ്ധയാകര്‍ഷിക്കുന്നു.

തിരക്കുപിടിച്ച ഒരു സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്റെ ജീവിതം വരച്ചു കാണിക്കുന്ന ഈ നോവല്‍ ആദ്യ ഭാഗങ്ങളില്‍ ഈ നോവലിസ്റ്റിന്റെ തന്നെ രചനകളായ യന്ത്രത്തിന്റെയും, യക്ഷിയുടെയും സമാനതകള്‍ കൈവരിക്കുന്നുണ്ടോ എന്ന് സംശയിച്ചേക്കാം. എന്നാല്‍ കഥ പുരോഗമിക്കുംതോറും ഏതൊരു മനുഷ്യന്റെയും സ്വപ്‌നങ്ങള്‍ പോലെ തന്നെ സ്വന്തമായി ഒരു വീട് വെക്കണം എന്ന ആഗ്രഹം മൂക്കുമ്പോള്‍ സാഹചര്യവശാല്‍ ആഗ്രഹങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കടിഞ്ഞാണിടാന്‍ പറ്റാതെ വരികയും ലോണ്‍ എടുക്കാനും വസ്തുക്കള്‍ വില്‍ക്കാനും മുതിരുന്ന നായകന്‍, തന്റെ പൂര്‍വ്വിക സ്വത്തുക്കള്‍ വില്‍ക്കുന്നതിനു വേണ്ടി ഏറെ നാളുകള്‍ക്കു ശേഷം ജനിച്ചു വളര്‍ന്ന നാട്ടിലേയ്ക്ക് എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നതായാണ് കഥ മുന്നേറുന്നത്.

പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രത്തിന്റെ സഹോദരിമാരായ അമ്മുലുവിനെയും ലക്ഷ്മിയേയും പരിചയപ്പെടുമ്പോള്‍ നമ്മുടെ തന്നെ ചുറ്റുപാടുകളിലും വീട്ടിലും കണ്ടു മറന്ന ചില ജീവിതാനുഭവങ്ങള്‍ നമുക്ക് തിരികെ ലഭിച്ചേക്കാം. പാലക്കാട്ടെ കല്‍പ്പാത്തിയിലെ ഒരു ബ്രാഹ്മിണ്‍ കുടുംബമാണ് കഥാ പശ്ചാത്തലം. അതിമനോഹരമായ തമിഴ് മൊഴികളോടൊപ്പം പഴമയുടെ നന്മകളും, പോരായ്മകളും, ഇല്ലായ്മകളും എന്നിങ്ങനെ ഏതൊരു വീട്ടിലും നടക്കുന്ന സംഭവ വികാസങ്ങള്‍ അതിമനോഹരമായി ചിത്രീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. നാളുകള്‍ ഏറെക്കഴിഞ്ഞ് ഗ്രാമത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് വന്നിരിക്കുന്ന നായകന് കപ്പയും, ചമ്മന്തിയും, ചേമ്പിന്‍ താളും , നാളികേരവും, തേന്‍വരിക്ക ചക്കയും, പറമ്പില്‍ വളരുന്ന ആയുര്‍വേദ സസ്യങ്ങളുമൊക്കെ തന്റെ കുട്ടിക്കാലവും പിന്നെ അച്ചന്റെ ഓര്‍മ്മകളും സമ്മാനിക്കുമ്പോള്‍; ഏറെ നാള്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞു കയ്യില്‍ കിട്ടിയ സഹോദരനോട് പരിഭവങ്ങളും പരാതികളും കുശുമ്പുകളും എണ്ണിപ്പറയുന്ന സഹോദരിമാര്‍ ഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെ നിഷ്കളങ്കതയുടെ നേര്‍പ്രതീകങ്ങളായി കഥയില്‍ അവതരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. തങ്ങളുടെ അനിയന്റെ പഠനത്തിനു വേണ്ടി ഭാരിച്ച ജോലികള്‍ ഏറ്റെടുക്കുന്ന സഹോദരിമാര്‍ പിന്നീടു നായകന്‍റെ തണലില്‍ ജീവിച്ചു പോകുകയാണ്.

നഗരജീവിതത്തിന്റെ നിലവാരം കാത്തുസൂക്ഷിക്കുവാന്‍ വേണ്ടി നായകന്‍ ഒരു വേള നാട്ടിലെ തന്റെ വേരുകള്‍ നിലനില്‍ക്കുന്ന വീടും പറമ്പും വില്‍ക്കുവാന്‍ തയ്യാറാകുമ്പോള്‍; അവിടെ താമസിക്കുന്ന സഹോദരിയുടെ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ പോലും മറന്നു പോകുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ പെരുവഴിയിലേയ്ക്ക് ഇറങ്ങേണ്ടി വരും എന്നറിയാവുന്ന സഹോദരി, പണ്ടത്തെ പോലെ തന്റെ ആ പ്രിയ സഹോദരന് വേണ്ടി ഇതൊരു ബാദ്ധ്യതയും ഏറ്റെടുക്കാന്‍ തയ്യാറായ വണ്ണം ആ വീട് വാങ്ങുവാന്‍ പ്രാപ്തനായ ഒരാളെ അന്വേഷിച്ചു കണ്ടു പിടിച്ചു കൊടുക്കുന്ന സാഹചര്യം; നമ്മള്‍ ഗ്രാമീണരുടെ ജീവിതത്തില്‍ കുടുംബവും രക്തബന്ധങ്ങളും എല്ലാം ചേര്‍ന്ന് സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന സ്വര്‍ഗ്ഗം എത്രയോ മനോഹരമെന്ന് നമുക്ക് പരോക്ഷമായി കാണിച്ചു തരുന്നു..........

നിധി കാക്കുന്ന ഭൂതം എന്ന കണക്കെ കഥയില്‍ കടന്നു വരുന്ന കാരണവരും പ്രാരാബ്ധം കൊണ്ട് അവിടെ ജോലി ചെയ്യേണ്ടി വരുന്ന പെണ്‍കുട്ടിയുമെല്ലാം നമ്മുടെ ഹൃദയത്തെ സ്പര്‍ശിക്കുന്നു. സ്വത്തുകള്‍ കുമിഞ്ഞു കൂടുമ്പോള്‍ ബാധിക്കുന്ന ചിത്തഭ്രമവും മറ്റും രസകരമായ സംഭവങ്ങളാണ്.

കൂട്ടുകുടുംബങ്ങളും നല്ലതും ചീത്തയുമായ വശങ്ങള്‍ വെളിപ്പെടുത്തുന്ന ഈ രചനയില്‍ മറ്റൊരു ഘട്ടത്തില്‍ പ്രതിപാദിക്കുന്ന പുഴയും മണല്‍പ്പരപ്പും, അമ്പലവും പാമ്പിന്‍ കാവും, നെല്‍ വയലുകളും മൊട്ടക്കുന്നുകളും എല്ലാം ചേര്‍ന്ന് നമ്മുടെ മനസ്സില്‍ നാം എന്നോ കുഴിച്ചു മൂടിയ ഗ്രാമീണ സൗന്ദര്യത്തിനെ അതിന്റെ ഉദാത്തമായ ഭാവവ്യത്യാസങ്ങളോടെ പകര്‍ത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു.

ഒടുവില്‍ തലമുറകളുടെ പാരമ്പര്യം പേറുവാന്‍ അതിയായ മോഹം ഉള്ളില്‍പ്പേറുന്ന നായകന്‍ തന്റെ ശിഷ്ടകാലം മുഴുവന്‍ നാട്ടില്‍ ചിലവഴിക്കുവാന്‍ തീരുമാനിക്കുകയാണ്.

മലയാള സാഹിത്യത്തിലെ IAS എഴുത്തുകാരനായ ഇദ്ദേഹത്തിനു സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാര്‍ഡ് നേടിക്കൊടുത്ത ഈ കഥ ഇന്നത്തെക്കാലത്തും ജനഹൃദയങ്ങളെ കീഴടക്കുകയാണ്.......
നല്ലൊരു വായനാനുഭവം ഉറപ്പു തരുന്ന ഈ നോവല്‍ ഒന്ന് വായിച്ചു നോക്കൂ..............

തന്റെ ബന്ധങ്ങളുടെ വേരുകള്‍ തേടുന്ന, ഒടുവില്‍ അവ കണ്ടെത്തുന്ന ഒരു ഐ.എ.എസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്റെ കഥയാണ് 'വേരുകള്‍'.
ഗൃഹാതുരത്വം നിറഞ്ഞ് തുളുമ്പുന്ന, ഹൃദ്യവും ആസ്വാദ്യകരവുമായ ഒരു കൃതി.
ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ പരക്കംപാച്ചിലുകള്‍ക്കിടയില്‍, ഒന്ന് തിരിഞ്ഞുനിന്ന് നോക്കിയാല്‍, നമുക്കോരോരുത്തര്‍ക്കും കാണാം മനസ്സിന്റെ ആഴത്തില്‍ താഴ്ന്നിറങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്ന, നാം മറന്നുകളഞ്ഞ, എന്നാല്‍, നമ്മെ മറന്നുകളയാത്ത, അഭേദ്യമായ , ബന്ധങ്ങളുടെ തായ് വേരുകള്‍.....
മരങ്ങളെപ്പോലെ തന്നെ, മനുഷ്യന്റെയും വേരുകള്‍ താന്‍ ജനിച്ചുവളര്‍ന്ന മണ്ണിലാണെന്ന് ഒാര്‍മ്മിപ്പിക്കുന്ന നോവല്‍.
നോവലിന്റെ ആദ്യതാളുകള്‍ വായിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ ഇത് എങ്ങനെ അവസാനിക്കും എന്ന് മനസിലായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും , അത് ആസ്വാദനത്തെ തരിമ്പും ബാധിച്ചില്ല, കാരണം ഇത് ശ്വാസമടക്കിപ്പിടിച്ച് വായിക്കേണ്ട ഒരു സസ്പെന്‍സ് ത്രില്ലര്‍ അല്ല, ഇത് ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ തിരക്കിലും, കാലത്തിന്റെ ഒഴുക്കിലും നമുക്ക് നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടുപോയ, എന്നാല്‍ നമ്മോട് അഭേദ്യമായ ഒരു അദൃശ്യബന്ധം പുലര്‍ത്തുന്ന, പലതിലേക്കും ഉള്ള ഒരു തിരിഞ്ഞുനോട്ടം ആണ്.

മലയാറ്റൂർ രാമകൃഷ്ണന്റെ ആത്മകഥാസ്പർശമുള്ള നോവലാണ് വേരുകൾ. 1967-ലെ കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാർഡിന് ഈ കൃതി അർഹമായി. മലയാറ്റൂരിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച കൃതി എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന നോവലാണിത്‌. പാരമ്പര്യത്തിലേക്കും സ്നേഹബന്ധങ്ങളിലേക്കും തിരികെയൊരു മടക്കയാത്ര നടത്തുന്ന ഒരു ഐ എ എസുകാരന്റെ കഥയാണ്‌ ഇതിന്റെ പശ്ചാത്തലം. ജോലിചെയ്യുന്ന സ്ഥലത്ത്‌ ഒരു വീടുവയ്ക്കാനാഗ്രഹിച്ച്‌, അതിനു പണമുണ്ടാക്കാനായി ഗ്രാമത്തിലെ പരമ്പരസ്വത്ത്‌‌ വിൽക്കാനായി വരുന്ന രഘുവിന്റെ ഓർമ്മകളിലൂടെയാണ്‌ കഥ പറയുന്നത്‌. വായിച്ചപ്പോൾ 'പക്ഷെ' സിനിമയിലെ മോഹൻ ലാലൈൻ ഓർമ്മവന്നു.

A very satisfactory read .
Enjoyed getting into the story and felt I was an invisible spectator closely observing the characters .
A story based in the 1960s which exposes all the misogyny and stereotyping of a modern rich woman .
Raghu is a high ranking civil servant with a very modern wife , who has humble background. His roots are in a remote village not touched by electricity or modern rules. His totally modern and high society wife abhors his roots and urges him to sell of his land to build a huge mansion in trivandrum, Kerala's capital district
He finally succumbs to his wife and goes to his native place with the intention of selling his land , meeting up with his two sisters who still live there with their families ..and when he sees the house and land he starts reminiscing about his past.
A powerful story of love, relationships and sacrifices, big and small

Other than portraying Raghu's modern wife in a totally negative, patronizing manner , this book had strong and remarkable characters.

Would love to read other works of this author.

പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട രഘു, ആ വീടും പറമ്പും വിറ്റരുന്നു എങ്കിൽ ഒരിക്കലും താങ്കളോട് എനിക്ക് പൊറുക്കാൻ കഴിയുമായിരുന്നില്ല. വേരുകൾ പറിച്ചെറിഞ്ഞ് നാടും നന്മകളും വിട്ട് സ്വപ്നങ്ങൾക്കും ആഗ്രഹങ്ങൾക്കും പിറകെ ഓടുന്നവർ ആണ് ഞാനും നിങ്ങളും എല്ലാം. അതുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ വേരുകൾ നമ്മുടെയും കഥയാണ്.

സെക്ര്ടേറിയറ്റിലെ ഒരു ഉയർന്ന ജീവനക്കാരൻ ആണ് രഘു. ഒരു സാധാ ബ്രാമണൻ. ഗീത അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ധർമ പത്നി. ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് മാത്രം സംസാരിക്കാൻ ഇഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്ന പബ്ബ്ലും ക്ലബ്ബ്ലും പോയി ജീവിതം ആസ്വദിക്കുന്ന ഹൈ സൊസൈറ്റി മോഡേൺ അമ്മ കൂടിയാണ് ഗീത. പാചകം ചെയ്യാൻ അറിയാത്ത കുട്ടികളെ തിരിഞ്ഞു നോക്കാത്ത പണവും പെരുപ്പവും കാണിച്ചു നടക്കുന്ന അമ്മ. സിറ്റിയിൽ സ്ഥിര താമസം ആയതു കൊണ്ടു തന്നെ മക്കളായ അജയനും സുമയ്കും ഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെ നന്മകൾ തൊട്ട് തീണ്ടിട്ടില്ല.

ഗീതയ്ക്ക് 4500 ന്റെ പ്ലാൻ അനുസരിച്ചുള്ള വീടു പണിയണം. എന്നാൽ രഘുവിനെ 2500 ന്റേ പ്ലാൻ മതി. അങ്ങനെ അവർ തമ്മിൽ വാക്ക് തർക്കം തുടരുന്നു. ഒടുവിൽ നാട്ടിലെ വീടും പുരയിടവും വിറ്റ് ഗീതയുടെ ആഗ്രഹ പ്രകാരം വീട് വെക്കാൻ രഘു തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നു.

രഘുവിനെ 3 സഹോദരിമാരാണ്. അമ്മുലു, ലക്ഷ്മി, സരസ്വതി. അമ്മുലുവും ലക്ഷ്മിയും നാട്ടിൽത്തന്നെ. സരസ്വതി ബോബെയിലും. വീടും പറമ്പും വിറ്റ് തുലക്കാൻ രഘു നാട്ടിൽ എത്തുന്നു. ഭൂത വാർത്തമാന കാലങ്ങൾ കോർത്തിണക്കിയാണ് കഥ മുന്നോട്ടു പോകുന്നത്. പാട്ട ഉണ്ടാക്കിയ വീടു വിൽക്കാൻ അമ്മുലൂ തുടക്കം മുതലേ ശക്തമായി എതിർക്കുന്നു. എന്നാലും രഘു തന്റെ തീുമാനത്തിൽ ഉറച്ചു നിൽക്കുന്നു. ശക്തമയൊരു സ്ത്രീ കഥാപാത്രമാണ്
അമ്മുലു, തന്റെ മൂത്ത മകൻ ആണെന്ന് സമ്മതിച്ച അപ്പവുടെ മകൾ. കടം വാങ്ങി ആണെങ്കിലും രഘുവിനെ കോളജിൽ വിട്ടു പഠിപ്പിക്കാൻ വേണ്ടി വാദിച്ച്‌ ജയിച്ചവൾ. കഠിനാധ്വാനം കൊണ്ടും ആത്മവിശ്വാസം കൊണ്ടും ധനിക ആയവൾ.

പെരിയാറിൽ പോയി കിടക്കുമ്പോഴും, പറമ്പ്ലൂടെ നടക്കുമ്പോഴും, തറവാടിന്റെ മച്ചിൽ നിന്ന് പാട്ടാവുടെ വടിവാൾ തപ്പിയെടൂക്കുമ്പോഴും, നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു എന്ന് വിശ്വസിച്ചിരുന്ന ഓർമകൾ വീണ്ടും രഘുവിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങി എത്തുന്നു. രഘുവിന്റെയും കുടുംബത്തിന്റെയും ജീവിതം ഇൗ ഓർമകളിലൂടെ ആണ് കഥാകാരൻ പങ്കു വെക്കുന്നത്. അതു തന്നെയാണ് വായനക്കാരനെ പിടിച്ചിരുത്തുന്ന ഘടകവും.

ഒടുവിൽ പറമ്പു വാങ്ങാൻ പുതുപണക്കരൻ ദേവസ്സി എത്തുന്നു. അയാൾ പറഞ്ഞ വില രഘുവിനെ സമ്മതം ആയിരുന്നില്ല. ഏറ്റവും ഒടുവിൽ വീട്ടിലെ മാവിന്റെ കുറ്റി കാണുമ്പോൾ രഘു അച്ഛന്റെ മരണം ഓർക്കുന്നു. നോവലിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും മനോഹമായ ഭാഗവും ഇതു തന്നെയാണ്. അച്ഛൻ മരിക്കുമ്പോൾ രഘു നാട്ടിൽ ഇല്ല, ഹോസ്റ്റലിൽ ആണ്. രാത്രി ഒരു മണിക്ക് രഘു സ്വപ്നം കണ്ട് ഞെട്ടി എഴുന്നേൽക്കുന്നു, അച്ഛന്റെ മണം അയാളെ പൊതിയുന്നു. പിറ്റേന്ന് അച്ഛന്റെ മരണവാർത്ത രഘുവിനെ തേടി എത്തി. അച്ഛന്റെ മരണം സംഭവിച്ച സമയത്ത് തന്നെയാണ് താൻ ഞെട്ടി എഴുന്നേറ്റത് എന്ന് രഘു തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നു. ഒരിക്കലും പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടില്ലത്ത അച്ഛന്റെ സ്നേഹവും കരുതലും അന്നാദ്യമായി രഘുവിനെ വീർപ്പുമുട്ടിക്കുന്നു.

ആ ഓർമകളിൽ നിന്നും രഘു, വീടും പറമ്പും വിൽക്കണ്ട എന്ന് തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നു. വേരുകൾ മനുഷ്യനും മരണത്തിനും ഇടയിൽ ആണെന്ന് അയാൾ തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നു. നാട്ടിൽ തന്നെ വീട് വെക്കാനും കൃഷി ചെയ്യാനും രഘു തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നു.

വേരുകളെ തിരിച്ചറിയാൻ കഴിയാത്ത പലർക്കും, അതിന്റെ മൂല്യം മനസ്സിലാക്കി കൊടുക്കുന്ന മനോഹരമായ നോവൽ.

1966 ൽ മലയാറ്റൂർ രാമകൃഷ്ണന് കേരളാ സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാർഡ് നേടിക്കൊടുത്ത നോവലാണിത്. വേരുകൾ മനുഷ്യനും മരത്തിനും മണ്ണിലാണ്, എന്ന് പറയുന്ന ഈ നോവലിൽ മലയാറ്റൂർ രാമകൃഷ്ണന്റെ ആത്മകഥാംശം കൂടി അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു. എല്ലാ മനുഷ്യരുടേയും വേരുകളിലേക്കുള്ള തിരിച്ചുപോക്കാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം. കാലികപ്രസക്തിയുള്ള പ്രമേയമാണ് ഇതിൽ അടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നത്.

He sets about this reluctantly, under pressure from his shrewish and domineering wife. In the village, as he meets his sisters and others among whom he grew up, a flood of memories overwhelms him, and he abruptly changes his mind about selling the property.
It gives us a clear idea about where our roots should be..
Also it arouses our childhood nostalgic memories..
A must read. It shows us how important roots are as they are for the trees.

വളരെ ആകസ്മികമായാണ് മലയാറ്റൂരിന്റെ വേരുകൾ വാങ്ങാൻ ഇടയായത്. ലളിതമായ ഭാഷ. ഒരു സാധാരണക്കാരന് മനസിലാവുന്ന സാഹിത്യം.
പാലക്കാട്ടെ കല്പാത്തി ആഗ്രഹാരവും അമ്പലങ്ങളും ചെറുപ്പം മുതലേ കണ്ടു വളർന്ന എനിക്ക് രഘുവിനെ പെട്ടെന്ന് മനസിലാക്കാൻ സാധിച്ചു. പണത്തിന്റെയും പ്രശസ്തിയുടെയും പുറകെ യാഗാശ്വം കണക്കെ നമ്മൾ കുതിക്കുമ്പോൾ നമുക്ക് നഷ്ടപെടുന്ന ചിലതുണ്ട് , നമ്മുടെ പാരമ്പര്യം ഗ്രഹാതുരത്വം എന്നിവ . നമ്മൾ മനപ്പൂർവം മറന്നുപോകുന്നവ അല്ലെങ്കിൽ മറക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നവ... !!

വീടും പറമ്പും വിൽക്കുവാൻ തീരുമാനിച്ച ശേഷം രഘു അനുഭവിക്കുന്ന മാനസിക സംഘർഷങ്ങളിലൂടെയാണ് വേരുകൾ കടന്നുപോകുന്നത്. രഘു തന്റെ ഭൂതകാല ഓർമകളിൽ നിന്നും സ്വന്തം വേരുകൾ കണ്ടെത്തുകയാണ്. ഒരു മരം പോലെ എത്ര വളർന്നാലും എത്ര പടർന്നു പന്തലിച്ചാലും വേരുകളാണ് ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനം എന്ന് ഓർമിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കൃതി. മലയാറ്റൂരിന്റെ മനോഹരമായ ആഖ്യാനശൈലി ഈ നോവലിന്റെ കൂടുതൽ മനോഹരമാക്കുന്നു.

I have a notion that why we are learning Malayalam and what is there in a family property if any way it doesn't have a need in this current times of life as far as personal economic growth.
Raghu, just show me how important our roots are. We just live here because of the emotion we have to one or other subjects, else we would have committed suicide long before, as I discussed once with my friend, for some people its comfort, some it's travel other its God and there enforced laws. It's with these pushes, people live this life, if they just think what I get from this, they are a gone case.
So with these roots, we just connect our life and live in this world.

The memories which bind us when we go to someplace, that's what its important for, not just the place. Even if the place is not so beautiful if the emotion we connect to that place is sweet the place becomes a Paradise.
Sometimes we connect with a music or smell to that place. Everything just flashes in my mind when I went with Raghu to his village especially the intuition happens to him on the night of his father death.
Its is a wonderful piece of work by malayatoor,
Which force us to look through our roots rather than his.

The hardest part in life is to take the simple and correct decision.
It's always easy to take the other part.
It needs a certain level of awareness and strength to hold the right and truth part of once life



രഘു , തന്റെ പരാചയമയ കുടുംബജീവിതം നമ്മെ പരാതികൾ വെച്ചും പരിഭവം വെച്ചും തുറന്നു കാട്ടുന്നു.
സമ്പന്നമായ ഒരു കുടുംബത്തിൽ നിന്ന് ഒരു ഭാര്യ. തന്റെ പഠിപിന് സ്ഥാനതിനും കിട്ടിയ സമ്മാനം.
കുടുംബ വീട് വിൽക്കാൻ പറയുന്ന പല്ലവി കെട്ടി മടുത്തു അദ്ദേഹം നാട്ടിലേക്ക് പോയി ആണ് കഥ നീങ്കുന്നത്.
പേപ്പട്ടി കടിയറ്റ് രമു മരിച്ചത് വളരെ സങ്കടതിൽ ആക്കി .മുറി���ദ്യൻ ആളെ കൊല്ലും എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞത് വളരെ ശേരി ആണ്.
അങ്ങനെ രഘു തന്റെ പഴെ ഓർമകളും നാട്ടിൻപുറത്തെ ഗൃഹാതുരത്വം പേറി ആ കഥ നീളുന്നു

അമലു ,ലക്ഷമി, അവരുടെ വേറിട്ട ജീവിതം ,മക്കൾ അങ്ങനെ നീളുന്നു കഥയുടെ നടു ഭാഗം. രാജപ്പന്റെ അഡ്വഞ്ചർ ലൈഫ് ചിന്താഗതി.
കർത്താവ് എന്ന മനുഷ്യൻ എന്നെ നല്ല രീതിയിൽ സ്വാധീനിച്ചു.
ആ മനുഷ്യന്റെ ദീർഘ വീക്ഷണം , നാടിനോട് ഉള്ള വികാരവും.
ഇതിൽ എല്ലാം നടുവിലൂടെ രഘു തന്റെ ഓർമകളിലേക്ക് അടികടി യാത്ര ചെയ്താണ് പോകുന്നത്

അച്ഛന്റെ ഓർമകളിൽ രഘു തട്ടിനിൽകുകയും തിരിച്ചറിവ് ഉണ്ടാകുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.

അങ്ങനെ ജീവിത തിലെ വേരുകളെ കണ്ടത്തി , ആ വേരുകൾ ആഴത്തിൽ പോകാൻ വേണ്ടി ഉള്ള പുതിയ പദ്ധതി ആയി രഘു മുന്നോട്ട്.

രണ്ടു വർഷം മുൻപാണ് 'വേരുകൾ ' ആദ്യമായി വായിക്കുന്നത് .നാടും നാട്ടിൻപുറങ്ങളും പശ്ചാത്തലങ്ങളായ കഥകൾ വായിക്കാൻ ഒരുപാടിഷ്ടപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരാളായതു കൊണ്ടാവാം അന്ന് ആദ്യവായനയിൽതന്നെ 'വേരുകൾ ' മനസ്സിൽ ആഴ്ന്നിറങ്ങിച്ചെന്നത് .രണ്ടു വർഷങ്ങൾക്കിപ്പുറമിരുന്ന് ഇന്ന് വീണ്ടും വായിച്ചപ്പോൾ ആദ്യവായനയേക്കാൾ ഒരിത്തിരി ഇഷ്ടം കൂടുതൽ തോന്നി .

'നഷ്ടപെടുന്നത് എന്താണ് എന്നു നിങ്ങൾക്കറിയില്ല 'എന്നൊരു പരസ്യവാചകത്തെപറ്റി കഥയിൽ പറയുന്നുണ്ട് . അതെ , നഷ്ടപെടുന്നത് എന്താണെന്നും എങ്ങനെയാണെന്നും തിരിച്ചറിയാൻ വൈകുന്ന ഒരു ലോകത്താണ് ഇന്ന് നമ്മളെല്ലാം ജീവിക്കുന്നത് . എന്റെ ഈ ഇരുപത്തിയഞ്ചാമത്തെ വയസിൽ ഈ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചു ഇത്രേം നൊസ്റ്റാൾജിയ അടിച്ചെങ്കിൽ ,ഒരു പത്തോ ഇരുപതോ വർഷങ്ങൾക്കു ശേഷം (അന്ന് ജീവിച്ചിരിപ്പുണ്ടെങ്കിൽ ) എന്തായിരിക്കും അന്നത്തെ അവസ്ഥയെന്ന് ..ഹോ ..ഊഹിക്കാൻ വയ്യ . നൊസ്റ്റാൾജിയയുടെ ഒരു കൂമ്പാരമെങ്കിലും കാണുമായിരിക്കും .നമ്മുടെയൊക്കെ വേരുകൾ അത്ര ആഴത്തിലാണ്.
അതെ .. 'വേരുകൾ മണ്ണിനും ,മനുഷ്യനും വേരിലാണ് '

This must be one of the very first ( If I recall it right, it was) novels that I read as a child. It was just lying around because one of my cousins had it as a paper for Malayalam. Later however I read more of malayatoor's like the more popular and more Malayatoorish Yakshi and Yantram. How ever this has a special spot in my heart since like I mentioned might have been my first book.

The title in Malayalam means roots and it is a bit symbolic in a way that it talks about the ancestral roots of the protagonist. This might actually have been an autobiographical novel by Malayatoor considering like the protagonist, Raghu the author himself had Tamil-Brahmin ancestry and was a civil servant ( Civil servancy here refers to a particularly decorated and coveted level of beurocrasy in India which can be achieved (although not exclusively) by getting through a very difficult (the probably of clearing it is apparently rated at ~2%) competitive written examination and a following personal interview) Although that isn't necessary for his one other novel Yantram also tells the story of another civil servant. It was just that the author chose to articulate the story in the backgrounds he knew and experienced.

The novel in style describes the life and times of Raghu in retrospect which kind was(is?) a popular style of narrative in Malayalam. One other personal favorite of mine 'Oru desathinte Kadha' is also written in the style of an elaborate memoir.

This one's a nostalgic read, I had this as one of my text book in my 10th grade and that's probably one of the reason why I wanted to reread this again. Describing about this book is pretty easy for me since I've written a 1500 words essay on the same. Jokes apart, in a nutshell this book is an emotional read. It talks about roots, family and transition. It's wonderfully written by Malayattoor Ramakrishnan who has written plenty of other noteworthy novels like this. I simply adore the lighthearted humour in this book as well as the love, bravery and other raw human emotions that are portrayed in the simplest of words. I've read this million times before (for academic reasons obviously) but now that I read it after all these years I understand the underlying meaning of the whole story. Read this book as part of my curriculum, it was an interesting read, originally written in Malayalam it's about the contrast of city life and village life.

A man who has trouble balancing his past and present, the hero had a very difficult upbringing in the village but with his hard work and that of his sister's he was able to secure a very nice job and position in the society which allowed him to be married to his wife who is born and brought up rich, She doesn't understand his roots, her constant demands for extravagance and his abstinence to dishonesty forces him to take harsh decisions which will eventually affect the life of his loved ones in the village.

The journey he takes to his roots will change the perspective and brings to light the truly meaningful things in life.

Verukal was my first malayalam novel that I have read. It was a part of our curriculm for ICSE syllabus. Ten years since I read the book, but I can still feel the characters, atmosphere and the emotions! The feeling of Nostalgia is what makes you feel while you read the book. I used to love this book so much so that I felt that I was a part of the story. I used to love my malayalam classes for my memories run quickly to Palghat . Malayatoor sir has explained things so finely and has done good justice .

ഈ കൃതിയെ ഒരു മികച്ച കൃതിയാക്കുന്നത് ഇതിന്റ ലാളിത്യം ആണ് . ആവശ്യമില്ലാത്ത കാര്യങ്ങൾ കാടുകയറി പോകാത വളരെ മനോഹരമായ ഒരു നോവൽ

Malayattoor Ramakrishnan has been one of my favorite writers ever since i read the Novel Yakshi. I wanted to read Verukal since then.
It is all about the past & memory, which lies within every person and a return journey to our own roots that we have not known or forgotten.

വേരുകളിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചു പോവുക എന്ന സന്ദേശവും എനിക്ക് തീരെ പരിചിതമായി തോന്നിയില്ല.

മനുഷ്യകുലം നില നിന്നു പോന്നിട്ടുള്ളത് വൻകരകളിൽ നിന്ന് വൻകരകളിലേക്ക് പാലായനം ചെയ്തു, പുതിയ സാധ്യതകൾ കണ്ടെത്തി, കാലത്തിനൊത്ത് മാറി തന്നെ ആണ്.

Also, the portrayal of the hero's wife is totally misogynistic.
