A magisterial biography of a fascinating historical figure. Queen of France, Queen of England, mother of two kings (out of eleven (!) kids), Richard the Lionheart and John Lackland, Eleanor took part in the second crusade, was under house arrest for fifteen years...
As the late Martin Aurell explains in his introduction, although, in the Middle Ages, the pen was held by men, who wrote about men, for men, her life is one of the better documented ones among medieval queens.
Aurell does a great job distinguishing reality from fiction. Each fact mentioned is corroborated by an endnote. Yet, the author's scholarly text is always lively and engaging.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in the period.
PS : This book was first published in November 2024, consequently the other comments on GR relate to Aurell's earlier and much shorter biography of Eleanor.
