First of all I have to say that Yvonne Ridley is bolshy, stubborn, does what she wants (not what others want her to do)drinks like a fish (or did) and smokes like there's no tomorrow. No flowery dresses or prim and proper lifestyle for her. Secondly I would like to say that I think she is great! She is funny, loud, reckless and rather a mans man (except that she is a woman).
I was surprised to read that she actually told the Taliban she was going to look into Islam upon her release. I always thought they had asked her to and once she had agreed they had released her. That certainly seemed to be the way the media portrayed it at that time. It was good to finally read what really happened.
I really enjoyed reading this book but there are a few things lacking. I really wanted to find out how her daughter/mother and rest of the family felt whilst she was being held. There was just a few pages at the end that spoke about her family but not really in depth. More importantly than that i thought I was going to find out why she decided to become Muslim? This isn't mentioned in the book at all. This is obviously my mistake as it seems she converted after the book was written.
I did find it interesting though to see the way she was treated after release by several people and she realised the Taliban treated her more respectfully than they.
It would be interesting to read a new book regarding her conversion. Many people assume she is foolish to become a Muslim when she has seen how the Taliban treat the women over there. However anyone who reads the Quran would find that it is culture that is wrong. Not the religion.

রকমারির সাইটে ঘুরতে ঘুরতে বইটা চোখে পড়ে। বর্তমান সময়ের বেশ সাড়া জাগানো বই। নামটা আগ্রহ জন্মানোর জন্য বিশেষ ভূমিকা রাখে। বেশ কিছু রিভিউ পড়ার পরেই বইটা কেনার সিদ্ধান্ত নেই।
আগ্রহের মূল কারনটা হলো, ‘একটা মানুষ তালেবানদের হাতে বন্দি হওয়ার পরে মুক্তি পেয়ে মুসলমান হলো’ ব্যাপারটা যেন কেমন লাগছিলো। যদি সে তালেবানদের কাছ থেকে ইসলামের দীক্ষা পেয়ে থাকে তাহলে দুইটা খটকা থেকে যায়। প্রথমটা হলো, সে কি সঠিক ইসলামকে চিনতে পেরেছে? কারন আমরা জানি এই সন্ত্রাসী দলগুলো কিভাবে ধর্মের নামে ব্রেইন ওয়াশ করে নির্বিচারে মানুষ মারে। দ্বিতীয় খটকা হলো, যদি সে সঠিক ইসলামকেই জানে তাহলে কি তালেবানদের সম্পর্কে মিডিয়ায় ভিত্তিহীন কিছু প্রচার হচ্ছে? কারন এটা এখন আমরা সবাই জানি কিভাবে পশ্চিমা গনমাধ্যম ইসলামকে টার্গেট করে ভিলেন বানাচ্ছে। তারা চাইলেই রাতকে দিন, পানিকে আগুন, টম ক্রুজকে হিরো আলম বানিয়ে দিতে পারে। তাই যদি কোনোদিন জানতে পারি যে এতদিন তালেবানদের নামে যা জেনেছি সব মিথ্যা, হয়তো অবাক হবো না। যাহোক, উপরের দুটো কারনেই মূলত বইটা পড়ার আগ্রহ জন্মায়।
এবার একটু বইয়ের ভিতরে ঢুকি। বইয়ের পটভূমিটা শুরু ২০০১ সালের ওয়ার্ল্ড ট্রেড সেন্টারে সন্ত্রাসী হামলার মধ্য দিয়ে। লেখিকা তখন লন্ডন ভিত্তিক সানডে এক্সপ্রেসে কাজ করেন। খবর সংগ্রহের জন্য নিউইয়র্ক যাওয়ার কথা থাকলেও তাকে পাঠানো হয় ইসলামাবাদ। কারন ঘটনার পিছনে দায়ী তালেবানদের ডেরা এই অঞ্চলেই।
ইসলামাবাদ এসে লেখিকা খবর সংগ্রহে লেগে পড়েন। আরো ভালো ভাবে অবস্থা পর্যবেক্ষনের জন্য আফগানিস্তান যাওয়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নেন। বৈধভাবে অনুমতি না পাওয়ায় ঝুকি নিয়ে চোরা পথে যাত্রা করেন আফগানিস্তান। এবং ফেরার পথে ধরা পড়েন তালেবানদের হাতে।
তবে যে কারনে বইটা পড়া, অথবা বলা যেতে পারে যে বিষয় নিয়ে বইটার প্রচার করা হয় সেটা এই বইতে পাওয়া যাবে না। আমি বলছি লেখিকার ধর্মান্তরীত হওয়ার ঘটনা। লেখিকা তালেবানদের হাত থেকে ছাড়া পান বন্দির ১০ দিন পর ২০০১ সালের ৮ অক্টবর। এবং ইসলাম ধর্মে দীক্ষিত হন ২০০৩ সালে। বইটা এর মাঝামাঝি সময়ে লেখা।
বইটার ভালো লাগা আর খারাপ লাগা নিয়ে বলতে গেলে ভালো লাগাই বেশি বলতে হবে। সংবাদ সংগ্রহের জন্য সংবাদ কর্মিরা কতটা ঝুকি নিয়ে কাজ করেন সেটা খুব ভালো ভাবে ফুটিয়ে তুলেছেন। শুধু নিজের কথা না, বলেছেন আরো কয়েকজন সহকর্মির সংগ্রামের কথা।
তার আফগানিস্তানের সময়টুকু এতই থ্রিলিং যে মনে হচ্ছিলো আমি যেন কোনো ফিকশন বই পড়ছি।
মুক্তি পাওয়ার পরে নিজের অনুভূতি, নতুন চোখে বিশ্বকে আর বিশ্ব রাজনীতিকে, এমন কি সাধারন মানুষকে নতুন ভাবে চিনতে শিখেছেন।
খারাপ লাগার শুরুটা মুলত এখানে। এই নতুন বিশ্বটাকে তিনি আরেকটু ব্যাখ্যা করতে পারতেন। বন্দি হওয়ার আগে নিজের বাবা-মা আর মেয়েকে নিয়ে যত কথা বললেন মুক্ত হওয়ার পরে সেটা খুব কমে গেছে। মুক্তি পাওয়ার পরে বইটা খুব দ্রুত শেষ হয়ে গিয়েছে। এতে আমি লেখিকার দোষ দিচ্ছি না। তার উদ্দেশ্য ছিলো বন্দি জীবনের গল্পটা বলার। সেটা তিনি বলেছেন। এবং চমৎকার ভাবেই বলেছেন। তবে শেষটা আরেকটু দীর্ঘায়িত করলে লেখাটা আরো পরিপূর্ণ হতো।
আর হ্যা, তার মুসলিম হওয়ার ঘটনাটা? সেটার মূল কারন বইটা শেষ করার পরে আপনি নিজেই খুজে নিবেন। না পারলে আমাকে বলেন।

Well this is a 'woe is me' tale if ever I read one! This journalist sneaks into Taliban controlled land against advice, doesn't follow instructions designed to keep her safe en route, moans constantly about the way she had to travel...ie as a peasant woman all covered up. You are a western woman you stupid ditz! You would stand out a mile away if you strut about the place in your usual manner! Pretending to be a normal Afghan woman is the only way to stay alive and your hosts are risking their lives for your ungrateful butt! It's no surprise when she gets caught, doing what her hosts told her not to do and waving a camera around. D'OH. When she is caught, she kicks up a stink and won't cooperate with anything. I'm amazed that her captors didn't just shoot her because frankly, I wanted to shoot her. Her constant whining and 'me me me' attitude made me think that the whole point of the book was to promote herself. She certainly wasn't doing anything in her book to promote the suffering of the real victims of the Taliban. Grow up woman and stop whining!!!

"In the hands of Taliban: An extraordinary story"
This is what she named her book.But let me tell you its not an extraordinary book at all. The only reason i read it was because i wanted to know how she was treated by Talibans. Taliban's faith in Allah and their "hospitality" with a prisoner is something you harldy see in wars of this age.
Author also tells about the hypocricy of west who wanted her dead so they can have good reason to make some propoganda against taliban and Islam itself.

This book is a slap on the people who think all Afghans are terrorists. It is a bad nightmare for those who think Islam is a strict religion.
Yvonne Ridley is a famous British Journalist who was under the custody of the Taliban due to illegal immigration to Afghanistan. After 9/11 her newspaper assigned her to a special mission to report from Afghanistan before Americans started bombing.
First, the Taliban thought she was a spy from the British. They daily investigate her and ask about her activity in Afghanistan. According to her, they provided her AC room, toilet, and the best they can offer in a subjail.
She was angry and abusive daily on Talibans and refused to eat food for many days. According to her Taliban was worried about why I was not eating. They always ask what you prefer in food. At the time she did not notice the positive behavior of the people of Afghanistan.
After the investigation was clear she was allowed to return to her home. She said one day in my custody one Afghan religious scholar asked me if I wanted to accept Islam. She said I will do my research after my freedom then I will decide.
Her custody in Afghanistan was viral news at that time. Her parents and friends worried about them. They thought she will be gang raped or beaten to death with stones. When she arrived safely in her home country people and media asked her many questions.
According to their attitude, they wondered how could be Taliban so humble to anyone and a girl like her. They thought I should be gang raped then there will be big news all over the media. When she came back safely media was not very interested in her story.
One day when she hired a taxi in London driver recognized me and said how the Taliban had left a beautiful girl like you. The driver said If I were in the position of the Taliban I would not make a mistake to leave a girl like you.
She was shocked after listening to him. She said this is how Western countries people treat women. She then researched Islam for 2.5 years and then she met with a scholar in London and accepted Islam.
One weird thing she mentions in her book. She said when I was in Islamabad, someone came to my hotel room when she was out of the hotel. She said the one spy theft her toothpaste because it was made in the UK. She said there is not a single best toothpaste available in Pakistan.

I read this book some years ago, but the impact remained with me as we entered post our 9/11 reality. It opened my eyes to "another side of the story". I have no sympathy for the Taliban, but Yvonne, reminds one of the human story of people like you and me in Afghanistan. I am currently reading another book set in Afghanistan about a woman's fight for emancipation of women and freedom from the soviet domination of the time. So sad, that extremism and intolerance causes so much anguish for the most vulnerable in society.

Yvonne certainly had a chequered past, but her determination to get a story landed her in deep trouble. The tone is a little self-congratulatory, but her experiences show that she was shown more respect by the Taliban in a worn-torn country, than her own colleagues and countrymen in our supposedly civillised society.

খুব একটা গোছানো না বইটা। ব্যাক্তিগত কাহিনীই মূলত এখানে প্রাধান্য পেয়েছে। পারিপার্শ্বিক অবস্থাগুলি আরও বেশি বর্ণনা দিলে ভাল হত।
মূলত নিজের ব্যাক্তিজীবন, পাকিস্তানে অনুসন্ধানী সাংবাদিকতা ও আফগানিস্তানে বন্দী এবং তার মুক্তি পরবর্তী এইসব নিয়েই পুরো বইটা। আফগানিস্তান বা তালেবানকে জানতে এই বই খুব একটা উপযোগী নয়।
মূলত নিজের ব্যাক্তিজীবন, পাকিস্তানে অনুসন্ধানী সাংবাদিকতা ও আফগানিস্তানে বন্দী এবং তার মুক্তি পরবর্তী এইসব নিয়েই পুরো বইটা। আফগানিস্তান বা তালেবানকে জানতে এই বই খুব একটা উপযোগী নয়।

Overrated Book!

ইভন রিডলি, অনেকের কাছেই সুপরিচিত বিশেষ করে তালেবানের হাতে বন্দী ও তাদের হাত থেকে মুক্ত হয়ে এবং পরবর্তীতে ইসলাম ধর্ম গ্রহনের মাধ্যমে আরো বেশী আলোচিত হয়।৯/১১ এর সময় লেখক লন্ডনের ডেইলি এক্সপ্রেস পত্রিকায় সাংবাদিক হিসেবে কাজ করতেন।৯/১১ নিয়ে প্রতিবেদন তৈরি করার জন্য প্রতিবেদক হিসেবে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র যাওয়ার জন্য বিমানবন্দর এ যুক্তরাষ্ট্রগামী বিমানের টিকেট নেওয়ার পূর্ব মুহূর্তেই মতপরিবর্তন হওয়ায় ইসলামাবাদের দিকে নিজের অনিচ্ছা স্বত্বেও রওয়ানা হয়েছিলেন।তখন মোটামোটি যুদ্ধযুদ্ধ একটা ভাব ছিলো।তাই ইসলামাবাদ ও জালালাবাদের নিউজগুলো সামনের দিনে খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। সেই হিসেবে এক্সপ্রেস অফিস থেকেই নির্দেশ ছিলো ইসলামাবাদের উদ্দেশ্যে যাত্রা করার।বইটিতে ইসলামাবাদে লেখকের অবস্থান,সেখানকার জনজীবন এবং সেখান থেকে জালালাবাদ যাওয়ার প্রচেষ্টা বর্ণনা করা হয়েছে।পরবর্তীতে গুপ্তপথে জালালাবাদ যাওয়া এবং সেখান থেকে পাকিস্তানের সীমান্তে এসেও তালেবানের হাতে কিভাবে বন্দী হয়েছেন তার ধারাবিবরণী আপনি পাবেন এই বইটিতে(১০ দিন বন্দি ছিলেন)।ইসলামাবাদ ও জালালাবাদের আতিথিথেয়তা,সেখানকার মহিলাদের জীবনযাপন, তালেবানের কয়েদীখানায় বন্দীজীবন কাটানো, সেখান থেকে ফিরে আসা,তারপর ইসলাম গ্রহণ এবং কিছু ভয়াবহ ঘটনার চাক্ষুষ বিবরণ দিয়ে বইটি পরিপূর্ণ করা হয়েছে।
আফগানি নারীদের বর্ণনা দিতে গিয়ে লেখক উল্লেখ করেছে- নারীদের দিনে ঘরের বাইরে বের হতে দেওয়া হতো না।এমনকি শৌচকার্যেও না।সেখানে নারীদের কোনো মূল্যই ছিলো না,আফগানিস্তানে নারীদের অবস্থা বর্ণনা করতে গিয়ে লেখক নারীদের তুলনা করেছেন জড়বস্তুর সাথে।সন্তান উৎপাদনই যাদের একমাত্র কাজ।নারীশিক্ষা নিষিদ্ধ,টেলিভিশন দেখা নিষিদ্ধ।লেখক আফগানি কিছু তরুণী ও তরুণের লক্ষ্য শুনেছেন।তারা পড়াশুনা করতে চায়,ডাক্তার হতে চায় কিন্তু তাদেরকে দমিয়ে রাখা হয়েছে ইসলামের নামে ইসলাম বহির্ভূত নিয়মাদি দিয়ে।ভিন্নচিত্র হলো তালেবানদের সন্তানরা ঠিক ই পাকিস্তানে পড়াশুনা করে,তালেবানরা নিজেরাও টেলিভিশন দেখে।
লেখক কারাগারের বন্দী থাকাকালীন সময়ের কথা বইটিতে উল্লেখ করেন- লেখকের সাথে তালেবানরা খারাপ কোনো আচরণ করেনি।যখন লেখককে মুক্তি দেয়া হয়েছিলো তার আগেই লেখককে ইসলাম ধর্ম গ্রহণের প্রস্তাব দেয়া হয়েছিলো।লেখক কথা দিয়েছিলেন তিনি দেশে ফিরে(ইংল্যান্ড) ইসলাম নিয়ে পড়াশুনা করবেন।ইসলাম গ্রহণে তালেবানদের সাথে দেয়া অঙ্গীকার লেখকের জীবনের মোড় পরিবর্তন করে দেয়।তালেবানরা লেখককে মুক্তি দিয়ে তাদের অঙ্গীকার পূরণ করেছে আর লেখক ইসলাম নিয়ে পড়াশুনা করেন এবং তালেবানদের সাথে দেয়া অঙ্গীকার পূরণ করেন।ইসলাম নিয়ে স্টাডি করার জন্য তিনি কিছু আলেমের সাথে যোগাযোগ করেন ও কুরআন পড়তে শুরু করেন।কুরআন পড়ে ধীরেধীরে লেখকের মনের মাঝে অদ্ভুত এক সাড়াজাগতে থাকে।তারপর তিনি ইসলাম ধর্মে মুগ্ধ হয়ে ইসলাম গ্রহণ করেন।লেখকের ইসলাম গ্রহণে তালেবানদের কোনো কার্য প্রভাবিত করে নি।বরং তিনি তাদের এসব অনৈসলামিক কার্যের বিরুদ্ধে লড়াই করার ইচ্ছা পোষণ করেন।
পশ্চিমা মিডিয়ার একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দিক তিনি উন্মোচন করেন।লেখক যখন জালালাবাদে তালেবানদের হাতে বন্দী ছিলেন তখন তলেবানদের হাতে কিছু ছবিসহ ইঙ্গিত ছিলো যে লেখক গুপ্তচর ছিলেন।লেখক বুঝতে পারেন এই হীন কাজ কারা করেছিলো,কেনইবা করা হয়েছিলো। পরবর্তীতে এ নিয়ে লেখক বলেন,পশ্চিমারা চাচ্ছিলো আমাকে তালেবানরা ধর্ষণ করুক,বা শিরশ্ছেদ করে মিডিয়ায় প্রচার করুক। তাহলে পশ্চিমারা নিশ্চিন্তে আফগানিস্তানে বোমা হামলা করতে পারবে।লেখক চাক্ষুষ আফগানিস্তানে বোমা হামলা হতে এবং তার পরবর্তী ফলাফল ও আফগানীদের নির্মম চিত্র দেখেছেন যা লেখকের হৃদয়পটে করুণভাবেই গেঁথেছে।বোমা হামলার পরবর্তী অবস্থা নিয়ে বলেন,জালালাবাদে বোমা হামলা নিয়ে জনগণের তেমন কোনো উদ্বিগ্নতা বা কোণ ধরণের প্রতিক্রিয়াও নেই।কারন নিত্যনৈমিত্তিক এসব তাণ্ডবলীলায় তাদের সয়ে গেছে।
এসব ঘটনাবলীর সাথে লেখক তুলে ধরেছেন তার ব্যক্তিগত জীবনের কিছু স্মরণীয় ঘটনাপ্রবাহ।তিন বার বিয়ে করেও লেখকের সন্তানের বাবা তার স্বামীদের মধ্যে কেউ ছিলো না এবং সাংবাদিকতা নিয়ে তার জীবনচক্র।এসবই লেখিকা তুলে ধরেছেন তার আত্মজৈবনিক এক অসামান্য দলিল "ইন দ্যা হ্যান্ড অব তালেবান" বইয়ে।বইটি পড়তে যেয়ে শিহরণ জাগানিয়া অনুভূতি পাবেন আশা করি।নবপ্রকাশ প্রকাশনী থেকে সম্প্রতি আবরার হামীমের অনুবাদ করা বইটি প্রকাশিত হয়েছে।অনুবাদ বইটি পড়তেও আপনার ভালো লাগবে।
আফগানি নারীদের বর্ণনা দিতে গিয়ে লেখক উল্লেখ করেছে- নারীদের দিনে ঘরের বাইরে বের হতে দেওয়া হতো না।এমনকি শৌচকার্যেও না।সেখানে নারীদের কোনো মূল্যই ছিলো না,আফগানিস্তানে নারীদের অবস্থা বর্ণনা করতে গিয়ে লেখক নারীদের তুলনা করেছেন জড়বস্তুর সাথে।সন্তান উৎপাদনই যাদের একমাত্র কাজ।নারীশিক্ষা নিষিদ্ধ,টেলিভিশন দেখা নিষিদ্ধ।লেখক আফগানি কিছু তরুণী ও তরুণের লক্ষ্য শুনেছেন।তারা পড়াশুনা করতে চায়,ডাক্তার হতে চায় কিন্তু তাদেরকে দমিয়ে রাখা হয়েছে ইসলামের নামে ইসলাম বহির্ভূত নিয়মাদি দিয়ে।ভিন্নচিত্র হলো তালেবানদের সন্তানরা ঠিক ই পাকিস্তানে পড়াশুনা করে,তালেবানরা নিজেরাও টেলিভিশন দেখে।

ইন দ্যা হেন্ড অব তালিবান” ইভান রিডলির আফগানিস্থানে তালেবানদের হাতে বন্দি জীবন নিয়ে লেখা বই। বইটিতে তার ঘটনাবহুল জীবনের খুব ছোট কিন্তু সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময়টার বর্ণনা পেয়েছে।
সময়টা ২০০১ সালের সেপ্টেবরের ১১ তারিখ। রিডলি তখন ব্রিটিশ পত্রিকা সানডে এক্সপ্রেসে কর্মরত ছিলেন। সুন্দর সেই দিনাটা যে এই শ্বতাব্দীর অন্যতম একটা গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দিনে পরিনত হতে যাচ্ছে তার কোন ধারনাও ছিলো না তখন। বিশ্ববাণিজ্যের প্রাণকেন্দ্র টুইনটাওয়ারের দিকে ধেয়ে আসে দুইটি বিমান। মিসাইলের মত আঘাত হানে ভবনে। মুহূর্তের মধ্যে ধসে যায় ভবনটি। ইভান রিডলিও ছুটে যেতে চান নিউইয়র্���ের দিকে। বিমানের টিকেটও প্রায় করেই ফেলেছিলেন যদি না শেষ সময়ে এসে তার সম্পাদক তাকে পাকিস্তানের দিকে যেতে বলতো। ৯/১১ এর সময়টা ছিলো ভয়ানক! আমেরিকা তাদের দেশের ভিতরে সন্ত্রাসী হামলার জন্য দায়ি করে আফগানিস্থানের তালিবানদের। তাদের বিরুদ্ধে একধরনের যুদ্ধই ঘোষনা করে দেয়। নতুন খবর তৈরীর আতুরঘর যে পাকিস্তানের প্রতিবেশি আফগানিস্থান হতে যাচ্ছে তা এতোক্ষনে সবাই বুঝে গিয়েছিলো। তাই ���ব সাংবাদিকের যাত্রা যে পাকিস্থান হয়ে আফগানিস্থানের দিকে ছিলো তা বলাই বাহুল্য। রিডলিও যথা সময়ে পাকিস্থান এসে পৌঁছায়। একজন পশ্চিমার জন্য পাকিস্থান কখনই আদর্শ জায়গা হতে পারে না তা আসার সাথে সাথে বুঝে গিয়েছিলেন তিনি। যদিও সাংবাদিকতা তার পেশা আর নেশা হওয়াতে পাকিস্থানের সাথে মানিয়ে নিতে তার সময় লাগে নি খুব একটা। অল্প সময়েই তার সাথে স্থানীয় ইংরেজি জানা এক লোকের পরিচিয় হয়। নাম পাশা। পাশার সাথে তিনি পাকিস্থানের অনেক জায়গায় ঘুরে বেড়ান। যুদ্ধের দামামা বাজতে যে বেশি দেরি নেই তা তিনি বুঝে গিয়েছিলেন। তিনি বুঝতে পারছিলেন পাকিস্থানের ছেয়ে আফগানিস্থানের মানুষের কাছ থেকে তথ্যজানাটা বেশি অর্থবহুল। তাই সংবাদ সংগ্রহের ইচ্ছা তাকে যুদ্ধ্যক্ষেত্র, আফগানিস্থানের দিকে ধাবিত করে। কিন্তু ততদিনে আফগানিস্থানের সাথে পাকিস্থান সীমান্ত বন্ধ করে দেয়া হয়। দৃঢ়চেতা রিডলি সংকল্প করে বসেন তিনি যে করেই হোক আফগানিস্থান যাবেনই । সব শেষ তিনি ছদ্যবেশে আফগানিস্থান প্রবেশ করেন। তবে ভাগ্য তার সহায় হয় নি। তিনি ধরা পড়ে যান তালিবানদের হাতে। এর পর থেকেই বইটির আসল সৌন্দর্য শুরু হতে থাকে।পাঠক পড়তে পড়তে হারিয়ে যাবেন তালিবানদের বন্দিশালায়, বা আফগানিস্থানের সেই দুর্গম সব জায়গায় বা লেখকের ভ্রমণ করা মলিন আফগানিস্থানের গ্রামগুলোতে। বন্দিজীবনে লেখনের শুধু মনে হতো নিজ দেশে আর ফিরে যাতে পারবেন? পারবেন নিজের নয় বছর বয়সী ছোট্ট মেয়ে ডেইজিকে দেখতে?!
বইটিতে লেখক একই সাথে অনেক কিছু ফুটিয়ে তুলতে চেষ্টা করেছেন আফগান নারীদের চরম কঠিন করূন অবস্থা। তার লেখায় যেমন প্রকাশ পেয়েছে যুদ্ধবিধস্থ আফগানদের জীবন, তেমনি প্রকাশ পেয়েছে একজন দুঃসাহসী সাংবাদিকের চরিত্র।একই সাথে একজন অসহায় মা! ধৈর্য্য শক্তির চরম কিছু উদাহরণ পাওয়া যাবে বইটি পড়লে।

Ridley was not being held for 11 days by the Taliban, but rather was walking in the aisle of the reality of the middle east world, and she implicitly expresses in several parts of the book that she liked it more in Afghan rather than in her hometown. Afghani might be suffered from severe punishing poverty, but this book rewards us with an actual warmth of Afghani people, which surprisingly also came from Taliban -- the very entity that this book title badly judged in the cover book.
Ridley was stubborn and hard to compromise during her captive by Taliban, but the book content was crunchy. As among the first journalists to 'luckily' arrived, witness, and reported the first milestone of the global war on terror in Afghanistan, Ridley captivated the reader through a dramatic setting, yet I can still feel a giggling funny story in it, and at the same time melting my heart to her honest and touching words about her clash with the so-called uncivilized world, but turned out to be a much more civilized world in their own tone. It was so crunchy that I need only two days to gobble it all.
From now on, when I hear Afghanistan, I would always wanted to try to find the emerald green eyed man and woman that Ridley met there. The first place that I would want to visit would be the Khyber pass and let myself mesmerized by the mighty centuries old Hindu Kush. I would try to be as stubborn as hell, just like how Ridley did, and observe how the word to reply that stubbornness of someone does not exist there. I bet I would only find kindness, humility, and composure there, and most surprisingly these human qualities were utilized to won war across many centuries against the British, Russian, and now the whole NATO alliances.

Yvonne Ridley, a Daily Express journalist, was assigned to report from Pakistan a few days following the 9/11 attacks. Amidst reports that the US were planning on launching attacks on Afghanistan in retaliation, the author goes around Pakistan and scours for the latest news she can dig up for the newspaper back home. She sneakily decides to do an undercover report in Afghanistan, taking great risks. This short and fast-paced book briefly recounts how it happened leading up to her capture by the Taliban. It reads more like a diary than a book, with excerpts of her notes taken during her imprisonment. The part where she was deliberately being difficult to her captors was not easy to read though: there was a sense of entitlement and stubbornness, especially since people around the world were pulling strings to get her out and that she did enter the country illegally. I however did appreciate the honesty of her accounts: of how the Taliban treated her and the conditions in which she was kept in. Near the end, there was more insight and reflection on her experience which were interesting to read.

Finally, read this book. It did take me a while. At one point, I abandoned the book.
It is about a journalist who was taken hostage by the Taliban and her encounter with them and eventually her release.
I don't know how to feel about this book. It was boring at some points and kind of exhilarating at times.
One thing I found the typical "white western superiority complex" in Yvonne's attitude during her captivity. This kind of attitude is sprinkled all over the book. No surprise there for me! I do find white folk have this attitude of "moral and civilised" authority over the people of the Global South. It is laughable that the Global South has a civilisation older than the Caucasian kind. She writes well about the Afghan people, who were courteous and hospitable. I think most people are! I'm not sure why she was surprised about that. It is always laughable when the Caucasian kind is surprised when people are friendly. Human beings are nice and kind, numnuts! I did learn that she converted to Islam after promising the Taliban that she would look into Islam.

Yvonne Ridley British journalist was detained by Taliban for 10 days and which made her life change. Her opinion on Taliban is that they where good to her and treated like a guest.She was captured by the Taliban as she attempted to cross the Afghan border to report on the outbreak of war for the Sunday Express.
Taliban are harsh to their woman which I have read from Malalai Joya book A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Who Dared to Raise Her Voice, Even in some part of book Joya states that Taliban is much better than Kabul government after them.
The book starts from September 11.2011 twin tower hit by Al Qaeda. Ridley travels to Pakistan to report to Sunday Express later she try to cross Afghan Border. She behaved stubborn to the Taliban but later she apologize to them during release.
Taliban are harsh to their woman which I have read from Malalai Joya book A Woman Among Warlords: The Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Who Dared to Raise Her Voice, Even in some part of book Joya states that Taliban is much better than Kabul government after them.
The book starts from September 11.2011 twin tower hit by Al Qaeda. Ridley travels to Pakistan to report to Sunday Express later she try to cross Afghan Border. She behaved stubborn to the Taliban but later she apologize to them during release.

ইভনি রিডলি তালেবান এর হাতে বন্দী হওয়া একজন ব্রিটিশ সাংবাদিক । ২০০১ সালে দশ দিন তালেবান এর হাতে বন্দি থেকে মুক্ত হওয়া পর্যন্ত সময়কালে তার প্রতি ঘটে যাওয়া কাহিনী গুলো সুন্দরভাবে উল্লেখ করেছেন ।
একজন অ্যালকোহলিক থেকে কিভাবে তাঁর জীবন পরিবর্তন হয়েছে সাথে তার ব্যক্তিজীবনের দিকগুলি তিনি এই বইটি উল্লেখ করেছেন ।
যদিও তালেবান এর মধ্যে থাকা বিষয়গুলো সেভাবে তুলে নিয়ে আসতে পারেননি ।
২০০১ সালের টুইন টাওয়ারের হামলার পরবর্তী যে আফগানিস্তানের উপর মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের যুদ্ধ কালের একটি দিক এখানে পাওয়া যাবে ।
যদিও আমি আশা করেছিলাম ওসামা বিন লাদেনের সাথে একটি সাক্ষাৎকার বা তার সাথে দর্শনের বিষয়ে জানা যাবে।
কিন্তু এমনটি কিছু ঘটেনি।
বইটির নামের মধ্যে যে আসা-জাগানিয়া কৌতুহল সেটা অনেকটাই কম এই বইয়ের মধ্যে।
যেহেতু মাতৃভাষা অনুবাদ তাই পড়ে ভালোই লেগেছে ।

৯/১১ এর পরে অন্য অনেক সাংবাদিকের মতো করে পাকিস্তান আসে ইভন রিডলি। অনেক চড়াই-উতরাই পেরিয়ে আফগানিস্তান যায় ইভন রিডলি। সাংবাদিকতার কাজ শেষ করে সেখান থেকে ফেরার সময় তালেবানের হাতে গ্রেফতার হয়। আর সেখান থেকেই ইভন রিডলির জীবন পরিবর্তনের শুরু। যারা অনুসন্ধান ভিত্তিক সাংবাদিকতা পছন্দ করেন তারা পড়তে পারেন।

I just completed this novel with a doubtful mind whether the story is real or exaggerated. I've read few books about Taliban but this one is totally different from everything.It tries to support Taliban activities and judging them as good.The reason behind is they behaved with Yvonne nicely and let her go safely.I bit confused in this.
As far as i know Muslims respect women more.Not only Yvonne ,any woman could come out safely from Taliban's hand. I wonder with this one incident how come one journalist came to a conclusion that Taliban are good.very ignorance!!!
I dint get any knowledge about Taliban from this book.But i really appreciate the author's writing skill and her boldness. Good.
