Now her livelihood depends on two enigmatic socialites and their notoriously decadent parties. The subject matter is still not my favorite, nor is the setting, but I have to admit this book was compelling and hard to put down. I love the dogs, Winnie and now Mario, or are they dogs at all? One never knows in these books. Willow finally comes into her own. I really enjoyed the people who worked for her at Mean 'N Clean, Chris, Fabio, and Zinnia. I did not enjoy the deaths in the book. They were quite horrifying. For creating truly horrific paranormal villains, Ms. Cameron takes the prize. I shudder every time I think about the Embran.

I love the New Orleans setting. I liked Willow and her talent. It's definitely a different type of thriller.

The Embran, dark creatures from deep beneath the ground, are back. And apparently they've targeted Willow Millet, the "normal" one in the Millet family. The girl who claims not to have supernatural powers, the girl who is so insecure it took very little to convince her to push the man she loved, the man preordained to be her Bonded, out of her life two years ago.

Well, Ben Fortune is back and this time he won't be deterred. He's ready to protect Willow with his own life (also because of a Fortune family hush hush secret), and he's also determined to finally make her his, bound them together for eternity.

That eternity might be short-lived, though, since the Embran appear to have a well-thought plan to exterminate N'Awlins, starting with the Millet family, and the "weakest" link of them all.

This books wasn't even close to Out of Body, the first book in the Court of Angels series. Why? Because while the bad guys (the creatures called Embran) were intriguing in the first story, in this they turned into some sort of comic book (or Japanese anime/manga) characters. Instead of creepy and twisted they came across as laughable and not very bright (I wonder how they managed to survive this long). The strange shrinking ability was too comical to be interesting and the whole plethora of forms is just too much.

The second problem was the heroine. As I explained in the commentary above (while I was somewhere in the middle of the book), Willow annoyed me to no end with her head-in-the-sand routine. And she descended into TSTL territory as she refused to listen to reason and embrace her powers when she was actually in danger. We all have only one person to thank for her (too) slow transformation in the second part of the book. And that person is her hunky Bonded mate Ben Fortune. If it wasn't for him I would've thrown my eReader against the wall (which would've been a shame) and Willow would've ended up dead in the first hundred pages (the jury is still in on whether that would've been a shame or not).

With the help of Ben Fortune and the secondary cast (the Millet family, Sykes in particular, Gray Fisher, and Nat Archer) this book wasn't a total loss, but it could've been so much better. I especially missed the resolution to the initial Willow-Ben problem, but his sister Poppy decided to skip town instead. But since she's Sykes heroine in the book coming out next month, I guess there will be time to explain and make amends.

Second book in a romantic paranormal suspense trilogy involving the psychic Millet family (there are a few strong psychic families in New Orleans) fighting the Embran, an underworld race that is dying out and has a grudge against the Millets and wants/needs to take over the world.

Willow Millet has denied her abilities all her life, wanting to be the normal one in the family. But when the Embran seem to be targeting her through her customers, and the bond and telepathy she shares with Ben Fortune from another psychic family becomes too apparent, she finally relents and opens up to her abilities. Willow's customers are dying of heart attacks after being attacked by something unseen and either Willow or her employees are the last to see them alive. Other people are disappearing, and the upper echelon of the police is clueless about paranormals, leaving Ben and the Millets (with one detective and his partner) to figure things out and fight their foe.

I received this book to review for Library Thing and had not read the first book, which is a huge mistake. What took place in Out of Body is important to this book and without it this story lacked the impact it might have otherwise had for me. I liked the premise of the situation, but that's the best I can say about my experience in reading this book. I got lost in some of the paranormal sequences and had to go back at times to figure out what was taking place.

It was too easy for me to put down and I never felt any empathy for the characters, which makes it difficult for the romance aspect to work for me. A reveal of some bad guys did take me by surprise at the end, but it wasn't enough for me to want to pick up either the first or last book to see if I'd enjoy it more.

I would have given this only 1 star but am giving the benefit of the doubt that it could have been more enjoyable if I'd read Out of Body before Out of Mind.

This was the first book I've read by Stella Cameron and I'd have to say I'm surprised that someone who has published so many books has such a weak offering to make. I almost gave it one star but I DID manage to make myself finish it so I gave it a bit of credit. The premise of the story was interesting but the writing was disjointed and choppy and I really couldn't get behind the heroine. For the first 300 pages she really was TSTL. Its not a good sign when I'm muttering to myself "You're a frickin' idiot" every few pages.

All in all, I'll say that it was different. Unique, kooky, surprising. And at no point was anyone ever referred to in a racially / sexism / etc.- charged, derogatory manner (which I cannot say for other Paranormal Romance I've read recently). And while there are some depictions of personal assault (something which served absolutely zero narrative purpose, and was kind of brushed off), it was substantially less than what else I've seen elsewhere, as well. So in comparison to some of the other stuff I've been reading recently, it wasn't too bad. Unfortunately, it also wasn't too good.

There were some fun things to comment on. There were loads of bizarre character names - like Bucky Fist, Dr. Blades, and Rock U - and the main baddies can can be best summarized as "Evil Psychic Animorphs," changing into various alien-ified magical beings that look like a bearded vulture, giant lobster, and a bat.

However, I didn't have that good of a time. The plot was linear, and bizarrely paced. Only the sheerest scrap of psuedo-plot held the two main characters apart from each other. As the sequel to a series, it felt like a constant battle to parse out who characters were, let alone how they could possibly be connected to each other. The resolution felt expected and boring, which is really saying something, because it came at the tail-end of a masquerade-themed wake for a wealthy murder victim, as well as a three-way battle with a bunch of psy-powered shapeshifters.

And let's be real, I didn't like the characters. I didn't like the plot. If anything, one of the only things I liked was the writing style, bizarrely piecemeal and abstract and STRANGE. Lots of choices were made in this book, but at the very least, at least those choices didn't include some of the other severely questionable behavior I've seen in other Paranormal Romance.

I liked the story line but once again felt like scenes would jump. I was having a hard understanding the more intense scenes. Maybe more details during these is needed. The lovemaking scenes were easy to follow so the problems were with action in my opinion. I enjoy the characters and the Millet family curse and am excited to start the last book.

The first few pages were very interesting. A mysterious death that left me curious to find out more. Then it flat lined and never came back. The men run the world in this book and the women have the same amount of agency as their foremothers did in 1850. There’s a tone deaf dub con right at the beginning that is too cringe. No thanks.

Ok so you gotta be really into the fantasy world to tackle this book. Love the new Orleans setting. And there is definitely a lot going on a good mystery/ thriller. But a little wild with the storyline and things the naked eye can't see.

Willow Millet is the only Millet who is 'normal', that is she doesn't have all the paranormal powers of her family. She's happy running her little personal care service, Mean' n' Green Concierge, you need it, we can get it done is her mantra. She's always been completely normal, instead of the oddness that the rest of the family makes use of from time to time. Sometimes she knows things, feels things, but everyone can do that, she's just particularly sensitive to the feelings of others. Right?

Ben Fortunes has watched Willow grow up from childhood through the awkwardness of teen years, and now as a beautiful young woman, denying what and who she is. He has come to love her, has known it could be no one other than her to complete him, but she sent him away. Only Ben knows that he can never let Willow go, the Bond between them can never be severed, but also can never be fulfilled until Willow recognizes who and what she is.

But, now there's another force to be reckoned with. A strong force that has been haunting the Millet family for a century, and finally it has found a home within the Millets, unknown to them, and it's the same force that tried to take Marley Millet. The Embran, creatures of the dark and far away place, are determined that New Orleans will be theirs, one way or another, and the Millets are the only thing standing in their way.

Out of Mind by Stella Cameron is the second book in the Court of Angels Series. It's a very quick read, twisting and turning to lead the reader along the treacherous path that finds the Embran and what they desire. Somehow in their battle against the Millets, the Embran have become stricken. Instead of the immortality that has always been theirs, they are starting to weaken and even to die. Only the Millets hold the secret to how to reverse the curse, their legend. The Millets only problem is they haven't figured out the legend either. Jude, their Mentor and the original member to bring the curse of the Embran to the family, has been trying to guide them, but there is only so much a spirit can do. Marley and Gray's story from the first book, Out of Body, tells the beginning of the battle between Light and Dark, Millet against Embran. Book Two, Out of Mind continues the story with Willow and Ben's story. Willow is in denial about who she is, and she just strong enough to hide from herself. Marley and Sykes will have no part of it, as sister and brother, they know what she's hiding. Ben, long suffering lover, also knows that she hiding what and who she truly is. But until she's ready to admit to herself what is obvious to others, they can never be Bonded and both will continue to suffer. It takes the evil influence of the Embran to force Willow to see.

Out of Mind is twisting urban fantasy/paranormal romance that kept me flipping through the pages. It was a quick, fun read and I didn't want to put it down. Although, it's was the second book in the series, I had no trouble picking this one up and reading out of order. I would usually recommend reading the series in order, but it's not necessary to enjoy this book. If you enjoy urban fantasy or paranormal romance with a touch of seduction and a sexy heart pounding romance, then this is the book for you. I enjoyed the story immensely and I'll be going back to read Out of Body, Book One (released March 1, 2010), and the following book, Out of Sight, Book Three (Sykes and Poppy's story) which is set to be release on April 27, 2010. I can't wait to see where this story goes.

REVIEWED BY AMANDA

Willow is part of the Millet family, known throughout New Orleans for their 'Natural Talent'. Willow refuses to acknowledge her powers and those of the rest of her family. Even though she tries her hardest, her psychic powers are well and truly there. Willow has an affinity to see the face of a person with evil intent even sometimes long before she meets or sees the person for the first time.

We're thrown straight into the French Quarters of New Orleans. Willow isn't like the rest of her family, she doesn't embrace her gifts, she chooses to ignore them and throw all her energy into running her own business 'Mean and Green Concierge' something her uncle Pascal, head of the family does not agree with.

Willow lives with the rest of the family in the Court of Angels behind the J. Clive Antiques shop. This makes it increasingly difficult for her to escape the constant watching of her family to monitor her affinity for the psychic while not allowing her the respite she desperately desires from her family and their 'gifts'.

For the past few days Willow has been feeling uneasy, with the feeling that someone or something has been watching her, but her gift has deserted her for she can't see the person/thing that she knows is following her. Willow is well and truly spooked by the feeling. Her family have noticed something is bothering her and are worried about her, and that's before the crash helmet with all the mirrors arrives with a handgun!

Enter hottie Ben Fortune. Ben is the man that who was formerly pledged to be her life long (bonded) partner. He is worried for Willow too as he's seen the handgun Willow has purchased and worries about her motives and how she'll cope with it. Couple all of this with him trying to get a measure of Willow. Willow dismissed the pledge and sent Ben away two years ago and he has been waiting for her to come around and call him back to her.

Ben believes their bonding was preordained from the foreplay/make out sessions that they've had before. He knows that he can feel her as a bonded couple should – the other’s thoughts, both pain and pleasure.
Willow is not happy to see Ben. She cut him out of her life to make things easier, to try and be normal, plus there are reasons that Ben doesn't know that had Willow wanting to break the pledge. Ben suspects there was something behind it all or someone.

Willow becomes the centre of a criminal investigation when people she knows start turning up dead in suspicious circumstances. Willow, the police and her family know there are sinister forces at work here. The same forces that we first meet in Out of Body.

Ben knows that he must help Willow and keep her safe while trying to make her realize that they are perfect for each other and their bonding will be amazing if only she will let him in.

Out of Mind is an awesome read that I couldn't put it down. Right now I'm looking forward to reading the next in the series, but seeing as I didn't read Out of Body, I might go back and read the whole series first.
I think anyone who loves a good paranormal tale with romance thrown in and revisiting families and characters from previous stories will love this book.

Willow Millet and Ben Fortune are members of prominent paranormal families in New Orleans, but Willow just wants to be "normal." When the supernatural monsters that threatened her sister, Marley, seem to be coming after Willow, she has to begin to accept her "powers" and join forces with Ben to fight them.
It's an interesting premise, and the chemistry between the characters is extremely genuine and compelling. However, the execution is a little confusing. I wasn't always sure what was happening and I didn't get a good picture of the "Embran" in my head. I'm sure the author has a clear view in her mind, but I didn't feel like it translated to the page. There were also several times during the steamy parts when what she was describing between the characters didn't seem humanly, physically possible, which was distracting. The worst was the climactic fight scene. I had to read it several times because the first time it didn't make any sense at all. The second time, I kinda got what was happening, but had to revise my idea of spatial relations, in particular the size of the "birdcage", as it seems it's big enough for a full sized human person to fight a monster in. The third time, I think it got it, but it was almost too much happening at one time for a person to wrap their mind around.
Unfortunately, these things really spoiled my enjoyment of the story. I was left feeling like it could have been so much better in the hands of a more skilled author. I've felt this way before about Cameron's work; largely solid plot threads; good, dynamic, genuine characters with great chemistry; but the execution, the writing itself, is off.

The heroine has always lived in denial regarding her family's 'gift's and her own special abilities. And because of it she denied herself the mate bond with the hero and severed ties with him. But now he's back. He's back to help her with the fact that she's being hunted and sexually touched by an invisible force and he's back to be with her. Though it's not his family that believes in the bonding, he accepts it whole heartedly because he feels it tethering the two of the together.

It absolutely killed him when the heroine turned him away but no longer will he allow her to put any distance between them. Slow but surely, he begins to draw her out of her bubble and into reality and when she finally beings to accept what she is, that's when she can accept him.

I really liked this book and I didn't think I would. I thought it would be romantic suspense to the hilt but it had great characters and relationships laced throughout with the heroine and hero is the forefront. The heroine was frustrating in the beginning with her ignorant and rather stupid plan to put her head in the sand and pretend everything was okay but once she admitted to herself that she wasn't normal I really grew to like her. But she made the hero fight for it. She put up such a wall between them but never once did he falter. Because he was so strong and so powerful, she didn't think she deserved him but the hero was loyal and dedicated to her. The visible wings creature touching up on her was creepy and the eccentric family the heroine works for was creepy. The book did have the mystical creepy vibe of New Orleans and I liked it. But truly it was the hero had made me love it.

I liked the first in this trilogy, but I could not connect to the main character in this one.

I found Willow to be like a traditional heroine from the old Harlequin romances. Although ostensibly she is an independent, modern woman, she was also in denial about the paranormal abilities all the members of her family have. She knows full well she has the abilities, and she also knows that there is some type of bad thing stalking her, but instead of either embracing her abilities, or letting her family or the man she loves [which she also refuses to admit] help her, she flails along on her own at risk of her own life. That didn't come across to me as independent, but rather stubborn and stupid. I'm not a fan of that type of main character.

I stuck with this to page 140, hoping Willow would smarten up, but at that point I was just too irritated with her to continue.

I do like the world the author has created in this series, and I liked the characters in the first book, so I will probably read the third book, which is about the brother, in hopes that he is a stronger character with a bit more good sense than Willow. This one, however, just did not work for me at all.

This continuing story of the Milet family was even better than the first. This is Willow and Ben's story. 2 yrs ago she drove him away from her because she felt his Pn talents were too far above hers and he would never be happy with her, this was brought to her attention by Ben's sister Poppy.
Willow has tryed to deny her talents, wanting to be just a normal person not a crazy Milet, but when danger comes to ther door, her brother Skys brings Ben home to help. Willow can't deny her love for Ben or her talents as the Embran are back with a vengence and out to get her.Again you have a great love story and lots of scary people. This part of the story wrapped up nicely and if you just want to read one of these books they can stand alone, but I think you'll want to read them all. I'm on to the next one!

The second in a series that I'm not particularly loving, but the third book was already in my Booksfree queue so I'll probably read it too. Whatever.
This book has Willow Millet finally opening herself up to the psychic side of her family's nature. I don't think that we ever find out exactly what she does except read scars and know what caused them.
Willow owns a business that helps people, she does shopping, cleaning, etc. Several years ago, she gave up her true love, another paranormal, Ben Fortune. He's back to help battle the Embrans (a society of beings that lives below the ground and has come up to take over New Orleans.
This book moved a little too fast and skipped over a lot of stuff that I felt could have been explained a little more. I will admit, I'm not much into the paranormals, but I generally enjoy stories about psychics. Just... not this one.

Willow Millet, steadfastly declaring she is normal in a family of paranormals, struggles with acknowledging her powers and talents. She works hard to be independent as the works to make a success of her business Mean 'n Green. She is targeted by the shape shifting Embrans that want to take over New Orleans.
Ben Fortunes, the love of Willow's life that she sent away, is a powerful paranormal. Ben is skilled and uses his powers and talents to the fullest. When he returns to New Orleans, he feels just as attracted to Willow as ever. He wonders why she broke away from him. He knows there is more to it than she told him.

Out of Mind does not disappoint. Like the first book in the Court of Angels series it keeps you guessing and throws curves on every page.

After Out of Body, this story was disappointing. I don't know why but this book just didn't click for me. Willow is one of those TSTL heroines that absolutely drive me nuts. She is in terrible danger from alien forces yet refuses to admit she needs help. DUH! Though I did like Ben. He loves Willow and after two years apart forced a meeting and repeatedly insisted he was going to help Willow even if she argued. Lots of unanswered questions which quite frankly seem more than can be realistically explained (solved) in the final book. I own book 3 so I will definitely read it but I hope it's much better than this one.

I enjoyed this one much more than . the first book in the series. I liked the main characters much better, though I'm starting to think this author doesn't write strong female characters. Though ,to be fair, they're not weak either. just not my idea of strong. Cameron also has oddly placed lines of dialog or description that pop up now and again that affect flow and probably should've been edited out. Still, I enjoyed this and I'm liking forward to the last installment of Court of Angels.

Currently reading on my Kindle. I'll probably read more of it this weekend, as I usually only read my Kindle books when I'm away from home.
I forgot to update this when I finished, so I don't remember when I finished it - maybe while on vacation? I think this is the second book in the series, and I don't think I've read the third one yet - though I'm pretty sure I have it on my Kindle. I've enjoyed the two I've read.

There were too many issues for me to enjoy this book. I don't normally stop midway through, but I couldn't continue reading it. The characters were very bland and I couldn't connect with any of them. I had a problem with the whole bonding thing and the possessiveness that came with it. It just rubbed me the wrong way. Also, the flow of the book was very choppy to me and made it difficult to follow along with. I really wanted to like this book, but I just couldn't bring myself to finish it.

I enjoyed this book and I liked the chemistry between Ben and Willow. Although there were some unfinished part like between Ben's sister Poppy, Ben and Willow. The story also ended pretty abruptly I felt on the discovery of the Embran eggs.

The dog was a surprise and he seemed to have some powers himself to be able to find the keys. Overall the story is pretty enjoyable

I'm always fascinated by paranormal books but I don't always enjoy them. I liked this book but it's one of a series and there's background information I'm missing. I enjoyed the setting of New Orleans and the story has lots of action but I'm not sure I want to go back to read book 1 or even continue to the next book.

very good for a second novel in the court of angels trilogy, thought i did get tired of Willow's self-doubt and ingorance of her powers. becuase if she accept her powers earlier, she would already be haapier with ben fortune.
