Review for complete series/volume 1-2

Noting that this was originally published in Japan as a two volume series but has since had a few sequels which are being published in English as volumes 3 and beyond. This review is for the original two volumes which works perfectly well as a conclusive story and can thus be read alone.

This was by and large a cute and largely fluffy romance while still taking on some heavier topics. When the story first started, I felt the romance was incredibly rushed and based too much on coincidence. However, as the plot moves forward, we have various flashbacks to the past and gradually see the characters' motives which in turn gives a more logic explanation on how things unfolded and makes me romance look a lot less rushed. I generally liked how these flashbacks were incorporated and it gave the story a good flow.

There is a point where one of the main character Kanade is pressured by a colleague to explain himself. Essentially Kanade has rejected the advances of a female colleague and later another colleague intervenes saying Kanade owes her a proper explanation as to why he rejected her. It's essentially made to look as though Kanade owes an explanation to his colleagues around his sexuality to make the rejected girl feel better about it. I don't believe anyone owes anyone explanations if they reject someone else's advances - no is no - you don't have to explain your sexuality or whatever other reason you may have to reject them.

That scene aside, I enjoyed this short little series and some of the themes it touched on like complicated family relations. While the art didn't stand out to me as anything particular, it is still a nice and clean style.

Art, 100% Swoon-worthy!

I worship Mashiro's visuals! Nosebleeds everywhere whenever he's on the panel. I can't think straaaaaight! Anyway, their relationship's progress is too slow! I felt incomplete after finishing the this (oh, good thing Volume 2 is already available!) Also, I'm worried about Mashiro's kraZy mother. Wouldn't want her going psycho over my precious boy Kanade when she finally learn that they are dating! Huhu

This book does many things well, but the scene where one of Kanade's coworkers pulls him aside and aggressively questions his sexual orientation in the name of "helping [another female coworker] get over him" stands out. Kanade's discomfort and the woman's sudden realization that she's overstepping the bounds of all decency are remarkably well done, and the entire scene is familiar in the worst way. You don't have to out yourself for someone else. No one can force you to.

I really enjoyed this. It was sweet, with a surprising amount of angst, and I'm very much rooting for the two of them. I've read lots of BLs with reunions between characters who had high school crushes, and this is one of the best I've read at making the lingering feelings believable, even with so much time apart.

Oh, turns out this is pretty good, haha. I’m quite satisfied with the first volume and hope the next one will be even more fun to read.

Hmm, Mashiro’s mom is really annoying.

No because his coworker taking him out AFTER WORK and telling him to admit he's gay to the girl that he rejected so that she could "move on" PISSED ME OFF SO BAD. Dude HR would never hear the end of it with me. What is this high school BS? Grown WORKING adults would literally never act this way. No one has to explain anything to anybody, it's not his job to give the girl he rejected reasons behind his rejection to help her sleep at night. That like actually pissed me off for his sake, especially when he's struggling and hurting with the fact that he feels unlovable & is scared to come out. That woman had so much damn audacity.

Dropping this series not cuz of that, but cuz I actually just couldn't be forced to care about the main couple, really. But I liked the main guy, he was alright.

Cute but...

There is definitely a character development here but the beginning was a bit , I don't know, weird maybe? Forced "misery"?
But the art is good and ohmigod the kitten 🥰

High school friends to lovers kind of story that focuses a lot on the difficulties of allowing yourself to feel your feelings, no matter the situation. Kanade and Mashiro both want to root for the other while also holding back their own feelings. I look forward to seeing where their relationship goes from here.

Glad I took a break and started this one over. It's not the most amazing or unique story, but it did end up surprising me, and I'm looking forward to the second volume - which it definitely needs, since there's a lot left to unpack. But this should be a good, solid little heartwarming series.

The setup is one I've seen before, in some stories I'd loved a bit more, so at first I was feeling underwhelmed. Kanade, who's known since at least high school that he's gay, has resigned himself to a life spent alone, lying about his relationship status to women at work who try to ask him out and want reasons for the rejection. One afternoon, he finds a stray kitten in the rain, stumbles into a nearby coffeeshop to dry it off, and runs straight into the high school best friend he'd been in love with all those years ago.

Both of their actions at this point felt a little bit off, and I set the book down partly because I was busy/distracted and partly because while I liked Kanade coming right out (no pun intended) and telling Mashiro that he's gay and had been in love with him in high school...it felt way too abrupt and insincere for Mashiro to blurt out that he was in love with Kanade too.

Which is a skepticism Kanade shares. It doesn't make sense. Mashiro had a girlfriend in high school. He'd never expressed any interest in Kanade. Why would he suddenly say this to a guy he doesn't even know anymore??

But as we slowly unpack their backstories and get flashbacks to their time in high school together, it all makes so much more sense. And I ended up liking Mashiro a lot. There's an absolute ton that Kanade didn't know about him back then, largely because Mashiro learned at a young age to ignore all his own emotions and certainly to not share them with anyone else.

And Mashiro's realization that what he's felt for Kanade all along was love really works once you have more context. He's never forgotten Kanade. In fact, their meeting at that coffeeshop wasn't entirely chance/fate...while Tokyo is a big city and it's not so easy to just stumble across someone from your past, Mashiro had specifically gone to Tokyo after college in hopes of doing just that. Kanade was the one who cut off their relationship after high school, changing his number and shutting Mashiro out of his life. Mashiro has never stopped thinking about him.

A lot of their actions are explained by their respective trauma. While I'd like to know more about Kanade's family life and whatever social structure he has outside of work (does he not have any friends?), we do find out his reasons for being single still. He had a pretty rough experience with the straight friend he'd fallen in love with after Mashiro, which made him resolve to try out a dating site for gay men. Much simpler...except he gets in way over his head, panics, and deletes that app, too.

Giving up too easily? Yeah, but it works with his personality. He's not someone who takes a ton of chances, and he's too afraid of both being hurt and hurting others - as he feels he did to his straight friend.

Mashiro, as the perfect match for Kanade's anxiety-fueled selflessness, is also terrified of hurting others by imposing his feelings on them. That's all tied to his very unhealthy relationship with his mother, whom he never wants to be like and seems to be rather afraid of becoming, if he ever fully unleashes his emotions.

That leads to some serious communication issues that Kanade ultimately has to make a decision to break through.

I liked a lot of this, and there were some nicely fresh perspectives on how trauma can hamper your relationships, romantic or otherwise.

I did not love Kanade's aggressively invasive coworker, although that did get better after their first couple encounters. And I appreciated that he stood up to her and told her that she isn't entitled to any information about his personal life and certainly not about his sexuality. While he did end up coming out to her and treating her as both a friend and confidante, he did it on his own terms, and after making the terrifying decision to tell the other coworker who had the unrequited crush on him.

That conversation was a lot better - the bonding over the pain of unrequited, hopeless love was great, and it turned out she was right all along about her interest in him. It didn't turn into romance, no, but they're becoming really solid friends, and in some cases that can be an even better situation. Plus it's just great to see Kanade being able to open up to other people.

Again, would like to see something about his family in the next volume, although I'm guessing it will probably be something with Kanade meeting Mashiro's mother or grandmother instead. We'll see. Very glad to have more of their story on the horizon. The ending of this one was really cute but certainly open for more development.

This is more of a 3.5 than a 4 star.

I enjoyed Rakuta's "I'm Looking for Serious Love", though I felt it had some writing issues, and while this reads a bit smoother, it's also a bit too fluffy in moments for my tastes. Both characters have painful pasts, and that's enjoyable. But this is also ruined by odd pacing and the very unnecessary fujoshi and outing plotline. I think it's annoying because I haven't read a BL manga with a fujoshi character in a bit, and felt whiplash coming across it. The issue is not that fujoshi exist or are acknowledged for existing, it's that it feels like an extremely weird thing to say to a potentially queer man, "It's okay, I'm a fujoshi". You can just... treat them as regular people. Plenty of BL just have normal female characters, regardless of their media tastes. I don't know why some mangaka find this so difficult to manage.

I also felt Shinichirou was completely right that his coworkers had no right to his private life, and that one-sided crushes are normal in life and it's not his problem to deal with. Being friendly is separate from sharing that kind of information with someone, and his married coworker should be ashamed of herself for pressuring him in that fashion. Rakuta threaded the needle with the conclusion of that plot, and I don't know that I find it satisfactory.

The result of this mix of extra fluff, dubious writing, and that bleh storyline, is that I don't plan to read the rest of the series. But if you like really fluffy plots, this may be for you!

Stay By My Side After the Rain Volume 1 is a tender and emotionally rich story that gently explores grief, love, and the quiet ways we heal. From the very first chapter, this manga draws you in with its calm atmosphere and characters who feel deeply real, fragile, and human.

At the heart of the story is the growing connection between two young men brought together by shared sorrow and unspoken emotions. What makes this volume stand out is how carefully and respectfully it handles emotional vulnerability. It doesn’t rush the relationship or rely on clichés—instead, it lets moments breathe, building trust between characters in a way that feels genuine.

The art is clean and expressive, capturing the subtle body language and glances that say more than words ever could. There’s a softness to the artwork that mirrors the tone of the story—melancholy but hopeful, quiet but deeply moving.

This volume balances romance and healing beautifully. It’s not just about falling in love, but about being seen, understood, and slowly rediscovering the will to move forward.

If you love gentle, emotionally driven BL with heart and depth, Stay By My Side After the Rain is a stunning start to what promises to be a beautiful series. Highly recommended for fans of Given or I Hear the Sunspot.

Omg went into this expecting light hearted fluff because it started out a little goofy and then it got so much more emotional than I expected. Like Mashiro and his toxic mom and how that affects how he perceives his relationship with Kanade. Then Kanade and his worries with romance and how he rejects himself before others can reject him because of his own insecurities with his sexuality and his self worth. AH it's so good! I need the second volume! I want more about all the things and I obviously want more from the romance since they didn't get together until the very end.

The only reason I didn't rate this a full 5 is because I felt like something was a little off like it almost felt like a high school romance when they were full grown adults. I don't need it to be super steamy and I really loved the wholesome relationship that they had. I just wish it felt more adult than it was.

I'm ready for volume 2!

Kanade has given up on love after being rejected back in school and losing touch with his best friend and crush. Add in knowing he's gay, and he doesn't feel like he can be bothered with even pretending to be interested in girls that confess to him. Unknowingly, in doing so and trying to protect himself, he's causing the exact same scenario that he claims hurt him so much that it wasn't worth the heartbreak again. This realization comes after Mashiro comes crashing back into his life claiming he'll prove they should stay together. The claims are all well and good, but there are more than a few uncertainties and mixed messages before the two. It's rather adorable how much their friends rally behind these two; they really just need to stay on the same page of what they both want and are slowly taking steps towards that goal.

Wow this was fantastic! The story started quickly with them reuniting and at first I was worried the pacing would weird but I was pleasantly surprised! The story telling is great and the author beautifully weaves in past experiences that justify the characters actions BUT we see the characters learning and coming to terms with their old way of thinking, applying their experiences after being separated for many years and actually doing their best to try and work through their issues! I’m so looking forward to reading more about them!

OMG these two are so incredibly precious. I really loved and enjoyed the journey of this first volume. We learned a lot about both of these characters, and how they got to be who they are from the time they met in high school. The way that they both helped and saved each other without even realizing it was so wonderful. I really am so excited that there will be more with them, because I need more for sure.

I like how straightforward this volume is (literally confessed feelings and got to the root of the story IN THE FKRST CHAPTER AHHH. This volume mostly was for crafting both the protagonists and explaining their stories. I really like how it took the time to show Kanade’s mentality and anxiety about being closeted, and how that affects his reactions and outward personality. Will be keeping up with this story for sure!!

Cute read. From high school friends to lovers in the future. Kanade has had a crush on Mashiro since school but moved away as he knew his love would not be returned. Years later they meet by accident and Mashiro says he loves Kanade. The start of their relationship. 😍

A little bit confusing when reading the back and forth in time. Love the art work and can’t wait to read vol 2.

As Rakuta delved into Kanade and Mashiro's past, the manga went in a better direction. However, some of the romantic framing creeped me out and didn't make them getting together by the end of this volume worth it for me.

A gentle, heartfelt start that totally pulled me in. The characters feel real and the quiet build-up works so well. It’s not overly dramatic, but that just makes the emotions hit more honestly. I’m really looking forward to seeing where their relationship goes next!
