The important role of the Prophet Muhammad in the everyday lives of Muslims is usually overlooked by Western scholars and has consequently never been understood by the Western world. Using original sources in the various Islamic languages, Annemarie Schimmel explains the central place of Muhammad in Muslim life, mystical thought, and poetry. She sees the veneration of Muhammad as having many parallels in other major religions.

In order to understand Muslim piety it is necessary to take into account the long history of the veneration of Muhammad. Schimmel discusses aspects of his life, birth, marriage, miracles, and heavenly journey, all of which became subjects for religious devotions. By using poetic texts and artistic expressions and by examining daily Muslim religious practices, Schimmel shows us the gentler side of Islamic religious culture, providing a much-needed understanding of religion as it is experienced and practiced in the Islamic world.

This is the first book in English to deal with all aspects of the veneration of the Prophet Muhammad. It is an expanded version of Schimmel's Und Muhammad Ist Sein Prophet , originally published in German in 1981.

About the author

was a well known and very influential German Orientalist and scholar, who wrote extensively on Islam and Sufism. She was a professor at Harvard University from 1967 to 1992.

مستشرقة المانية ولدت في مدينة إرفورت بوسط ألمانيا لعائلة بروتستانتية تنتمي إلى الطبقة الوسطى..في عام 1939 نزحت مع الأسرة إلى برلين وفيها بدأت دراستها الجامعية للأستشراق. وبعد عام واحد بدأت العمل على رسالتها للدكتوراة حول مكانة علماء الدين في المجتمع المملوكى تحت إشراف ريشارد هارتمان وقد انتهت منها في نوفمبر 1941 وهى في التاسعة عشر من عمرها ونشرتها عام 1943 في مجلة "عالم الإسلام" تحت عنوان "الخليفة والقاضى في مصر في العصور الوسطى المتأخرة".
وفى نوفمبر من عام 1941 عملت كمترجمة عن التركية في وزارة الخارجية الألمانية. وفى وقت الفراغ واصلت اهتمامها العلمى بتاريخ المماليك حتى تمكنت من عمل فهارس لتاريخ ابن إياس. وفى مارس 1945، قبيل نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية بقليل، انتهت من رسالة الدكتوراه في جامعة برلين عن الطبقة العسكرية المملوكية.
وقد احرزت،، في عام 1995 وكأول مستشرقة ودارسة للإسلام جائزة السلام الألمانية التي يمنحها اتحاد الناشرين الألمان ويسلمها رئيس الدولة الألمانى.

Hooked to this lovely book about my Beloved Mustafa SAW by Annemarie Schimmel a German , beautifully written, quoting seamlessly other Sufis and mystical poets analyzing their experiences, feelings and thoughts on the whole aspect of Prophet Muhammad SAW's personality, his actions, speeches, his Miracles and his life..

A very unbiased yet very objectively written to show the Islam is more than what is perceived by general Western rather any scholar.

Good read for any one with a open mind & a tilt towards mystical readings

The writers Annemarie Schimmel, professor at Harvard University & a iconic representation on the studies of Allama Iqbal’s work & mysticism in Islamic world

جاء في صحيح البخاري أن الرسول صل الله عليه وسلم قال: لا تطروني كما أطرت النصارى ابن مريم، إنما أنا عبد فقولوا عبد الله ورسوله.


هكذا علمنا رسول الله صل الله عليه وسلم عن نفسه وهكذا أخبرنا القرآن الكريم وهذه هي السنة التي مشى بها الجيل الأول من الصحابة والتابعين ولكن بعد القرن الثاني أو الثالث الهجري تقريبا وانحراف الشيعة ومبالغة المتصوفة تم تفسير كثير من الأحاديث -بعضها موضوع- لإثبات ما لم يثبته النبي لنفسه.. في هذا الكتاب تنقل لنا المستشرقة آنا ماري شيمل كيف يرى المسلمون نبيهم وكيف يبجلونه، في حوالي اثنا عشرة فصلا تحدثنا عن الحوادث العظام في حياة النبي وكيف تناولها المسلمون خاصة في إيران والجانب الشرقي من دول آسيا عن طريق نظم الأشعار والإحتفاء والإحتفال بالنبي، وكيف هو موجود في أنظارهم بالنسبة لمن سبقه من الأنبياء والبشر ومنزلته من الله سبحانه وتعالى.

حتما هناك مبالغات يضيق منها الصدر أثناء القراءة، كيف يمكن أن يتحول سماحة هذا الدين ورحابته إلى ضيق الأفق لدى مجتمعات بأكملها فيضعون النبي صل الله عليه وسلم في غير ما أراد له ربه وغير ما أُرسل به.

مجهود عظيم في الكتاب وتناول جيد وان شاء الله يكون لنا لقاء آخر بالكتابة رحمة الله عليها.

Rasa-rasanya, keningku seringkali terlipat sewaktu membaca buku ini. Selain isinya yang berat, juga karena terjemahannya agak sulit saya cerna.

Dalam karyanya ini Annemarie Schimmel membahas fenomena-fenomena Penghormatan terhadap Nabi Muhammad SAW dalam Islam, khususnya di wilayah-wilayah Indo-Muslim.

Fenomena-fenomena yang dijumpai dalam beragam aspek, antara lain:

Literatur-literatur, Syair, Prosa, Litani dan Madah-madah pujian yang diciptakan untuk penghormatan kepada Nabi SAW. Fenomena dalam bentuk karya-karya sastra yang indah, hingga isinya yang terlalu dilebih-lebihkan. Seperti dalam penggambaran lahiriah Nabi. Nabi itu sedemikian suci dan harum sehingga serangga tak mau hinggap ditubuhnya atau Nabi sangat suci dan bercahaya, tubuhnya tak meninggalkan bayangan.

Bahkan dalam beberapa tradisi, kisah, syair dan madah pujian ini diyakini membawa barakah, mempunyai daya sembuh dan pelantun dan pendengarnya dijanjikan pahala. Menurut Dr. N.A. Baloch, ’merupakan suatu kebenaran psikologikal, bahwa wajar saja bagi orang-orang membesar-besarkan pelukisan tokoh-tokoh yang dicintai, sebab tindakan itu timbul dari dorongan hati (hal.111)

Maulid adalah juga sebuah fenomena Penghormatan kepada Nabi SAW. Dibeberapa tempat bulan Milad Nabi merupakan bulan festival. Adanya keyakinan bahwa perayaan Mawlud memiliki daya mendatangkan berkah. Walaupun masih terdapat Pro dan kontra Bid’ahnya perayaan Maulid, maulid tetap dirayakan dihampir seluruh wilayah Muslim. Dibahas pula fenomena yang ada dalam tradisi tasawuf (nur Muhammad), dan posisi Nabi sebagai wasilah.

Fenomena penghormatan terhadap Nabi mengalami perubahan orientasi sejalan dengan berjalannya waktu. Pada masa-masa terkini, timbul perubahan dalam orientasi mistikal dan mitikal ke arah penekanan praktis dan konstekstual pada pencapaian-pencapain Nabi dalam bidang politik, sosial dan moral. Para teolog-teolog pembaharu sekarang cenderung mendemitologisasikan legenda-legenda menyangkut Rasulullah Nabi SAW. Membuat Nabi sekali lagi sebagai realitas Hidup bagi ummatnya. Dimana mukjizat Nabi yang terbesar bukanlah terletak pada Pembelahan Bulan, Pohon Palem yang mengeluh atau domba yang berbicara, tapi Mukjizat yang dibawa pada perubahan sosial. spiritual, moral dan religius (hal. 307)

Akhirnya, ada satu sarana untuk mencapai tujuan penghormatan kepada Nabi, sarana yang contohnya diberikan oleh Allah dalam Al Qur'an 33:56
" Sesungguhnya Allah dan para MalaikatNya bershalawat untuk Nabi. Wahai orang-orang yang beriman, bershalawatlah kamu untuk Nabi danucapkanlah salam dengan penuh penghormatan" Memohonkan kepada Allah keberkahan atas Nabi dan ahlul baitnya. Dan jadikanlah dia Uswatun Hasanah, contoh yang baik.

This is a book that excels all other works on Prophet in terms of its content and presentation. It discusses aspects of his life, birth, marriage, miracles, and heavenly journey, all of which became subjects for veneration and devotion. The book is the fruit of her interest in the figure of the Prophet of Islam and her intellectual and spiritual journeys through the places like Turkey, India and Pakistan. She was deeply fascinated by the portrayals of Prophet Muhammad in the poetries of Jalaluddin Rumi, Allama Iqbal and the Sindhi folk literatures and Qawwali genres. This is indeed not a book which solely looks for the "historical Muhammad" ,as many of the _seerahs_ did, rather it seeks the mystical realms of prophethood and the literary and historical accounts of veneration of the Prophet. The title of the book (and Muhammad is his Messenger) indeed is an indication to the contents of the book which delve through the narratives of the lively presence of Muhammad (s) in the life of the Umma. As Ibn Hazam argues: "How could the Prophet of Islam not be alive since one says, "Muhammad is the messenger of God" and not "had been the messenger of God". The subtile of the book "the veneration of the Prophet in Islamic piety" also throws light to representation of Prophet in the rites and rituals of believers. Since Schimmel was a firm protestant believer, her endeavour is an absolute proof for the fact that any objective understanding of the life of Prophet will doubtlessly ends up in a positive appreciation of the Prophet as " the perfect person" or "the noble paradigm".

واحدة من الشهادات المنصفة لنبي الإسلام صلى الله عليه وسلم كانت تلك التي قدمتها المستشرقة الألمانية آنه ماري شيمل التي لم تتطرق الى الجانب الشخصي والعبادي للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بل تناولت النواحي الأخلاقية والاجتماعية لرسول الاسلام (ص) التي يحسب هو نفسه أنها أسمى وأكثر ضرورة وأنفع للعالمين ، فمن بين كل الاسماء والصفات التي اختص بها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم خصصت آنه ماري فصلا كاملا لكون النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم "رحمة للعالمين " ، تقول : " لقد ارتدى عباءة شرف صفة الرحمة ، وعندما اتخذت الرحمة شكلاً أُرسل إلى الخلق " وأصبح النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم النموذج المثالي للكمال الأخلاقي وربطت المستشرقة الألمانية بين رفق رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم واعتداله مع المسلم وغير المسلم وبين نجاحه في النهوض بمجتمعه وتخليصه من كل أشكال الطائفية والعنصرية والطبقية التي سادته وشانته ، رؤية آنه ماري شيمل لنبي الاسلام (ص) كشفت الفارق الكبير والبون الشاسع بين أدب وأخلاق وتعاليم وأهداف ووصايا رسول الله (ص) وبين أبناء أمته التي فرقوها الى طوائف وجماعات ومذاهب وأحزاب ، كل حزب بما لديهم فرحون ، فعادت الطائفية والعنصرية والقبلية باسوأ مما كانت عليه في الجاهلية الأولى
الكتاب قيم ويقع في اثنى عشر فصلا لا استطيع التعليق عليه ففصول الكتاب تشبه السوناتات التي يكتبها عباقرة مثل بيتهوفن وموتسارت

Membaca karya ini--dg ketebalan setiap babnya--dg pandangan bahwa penulisnya adl orientalis non muslim, dlm bbrp kadar membuat separuh ragu, "haruskah kita mendengar hal2 semacam ini dari seorang yg tidak mengamalkan apa yg dituntunkan nabi muhammad?"

Tapi prof. schimmel adl seorang yg sulit berhenti utk menulis ketika membincangkan sosok nabi muhammad saw.

Pada akhirnya keterangan mengenai keyakinan penulis beserta praktek kesalehan beragama, yang disimpannya rapat2 dari publik, mendorong utk lebih berani membaca karya ini lebih lanjut. Keyakinan dan kesalehan beragama, beserta segenap buncahan kerinduan, yang kemudian sangat membuat semua menjadi terasa wajar kenapa prof. schimmel begitu menggebu2 dan begitu sulit utk berhenti ketika menulis mengenai nabi muhammad saw. Sedemikian itulah kerinduan beliau pada sosok teragung ini.

buku yang pas untuk memandang Rasulullah saw dari sisi orang dengan keyakinan lain, dan bagaimana penulis dengan segala literaturnya mampu menumbuhkan rasa cinta kepada manusia paling sempurna di bumi ini. suka semua bagian di mana para penyair menuliskan rasa cinta mendalam pada kanjeng Nabi saw dengan katakata mereka.

sepanjang membaca inget dengan tulisan yang muncul di video clip salah satu penyanyi :
Allah berfirman dalam sebuah hadist qudsi, "seandainya Aku tidak mencipta engkau, yaa Muhammad. niscaya tidak akan Kuciptakan semua makhluk."
trus inget bahwa nama "Muhammad" sendiri memang ada ketika Rasulullah lahir, tidak ada satupun sebelum beliau saw yang memakai nama ini, sebab artinya yang begitu mulia dan spesial.

betapa istimewanya dia yang namanya tertulis bersanding dengan Pemilik semesta raya.

buku ini aku baca yg terjemahan indonesianya. jago bener kalo bisa melahap yang english...hihi...wong yg indonesia aja agak pening bacanya.
sesungguhnya aku suka di buku ini yang kaya akan syair syair kuno dari para penyair kuno yang menyanjung nyanjung kebesaran Nabi Muhammad sejak Ia lahir dan perjalanan keimanan Nabi Saw dalam penyebaran agama Islam.
Sepertinya buku ini adalah persembahan dan penghormatan terhadap Nabi Saw dalam Islam.

Satu yang paling membekas dalam buku ini ada di hal,322.
" Dikau Lembaran yang terjaga baik, dan dikaulah Pena! "
Pujian dan penghormatan dari seorang panyair-filosof indo-muslim Muhammad Iqbal kepada nabi Saw. Pujian yang sangat simple tapi tradisional.

Agak lelah sih baca buku ini tapi menarik.

Schimmel's book is a scholarly and seemingly exhaustive study of the veneration of the Prophet in Islam and covers the entire range of Muslim thought, both chronologically and geographically. I thought I had some intimation, at least, of the role of the Prophet in Islam, but I had barely scratched the surface, Schimmel perhaps best sums up the role of the Prophet in her closing quote from Muhammad Iqbal (d. 1938): :"Love of the Prophet runs like blood in the veins of his community."

Wanting to read a book about the Prophet, my husband suggested this book. I thought this book was going to be a seerah of the prophet, but was not the case and was pleasantly surprised. AnnMarie Schimmel is a brilliant writer, who uses poetry, texts, and artistic expressions by examining important aspects of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) life. Chapter 7 was really my favourite: the light of Muhammad and the Mystical tradition.

saya baca yang versi terjemahan bahasa indonesianya, judulnya "Cahaya purnama kekasih tuhan". (Eh bener gak ya yang ini ? Haha). dan dari segi pemaparan, seperti halnya orientalis lainnya, penuh dengan praduga dan kritis.

untuk pembanding terhadap bacaan shiroh nabi pada umumnya, buku ini cukup membantu. terlebih basik dan referensi yang digunakan di buku ini, kebanyakan dengan menggunakan literasi puisi sufi sebagai ungkapan kecintaan kepada Rasul.
