Stepping right out of my comfort zone was well worth it! I haven't read a book like this in a long time and I am really glad I stepped out of my bubble to do it. This book does have a lot of triggers, there is plenty of warning! The authors of these stories have taken a darkness and built some amazing stories out of them. There is a strong female bad ass in Assassin of the night, this was probably one of my favourite characters in the book. In each of the stories the authors did an amazing job of weaving the story into such a build up that you couldn't stop reading. A couple of them left with a cliff hanger and I need to know more, such as Sick love notes, Birthday kisses and the Gentleman's murder club. Others left you pondering with thoughts of 'I did not see that coming'. If thriller is what you like this is a must read book!
Do not read if you are triggered!!! Now that being said, this is some dark stuff. I loved it. Not all of it was what I was expecting, but it definitely fit the title. Some of it was a touch too dark, a bit much even for me, but I still liked it all. I really can’t wait for the sequel to see where some of this goes. Some of it doesn’t need a sequel, they are perfect just the way they were. But some were definitely cliffhangers. I hope you enjoy it as much as it more than I did.
I am one of those people who loves the murder documentaries, so this book peaked my interest. It’s not your average serial killer book like the title would have you believe. We have books about bullies that I think might lead to the torment that causes someone to be a serial killer, and then there are true serial killers, or there is a story in here where the heroine is the storyline for serial killer demons... I wish some of these were longer so I could see what happened. This isn’t a story for everyone, but for those of us who like murder shows, this will be a good one to wet your appetite.
Bleeding Hearts Anthology: Assassin Of The Night By Alexis Taylor & Beth Hendrix
I loved this story its graphic, emotional, and twisted which is exactly what I expected from these authors.
This story has a lot of twists and turns just when you think you know what's going to happen next boom they pull the rug from under our feet. From sex trafficking and prostitution to undercover police and a serial killer we can't help but sympathize with this story has it all. I am really excited to read the rest of the book. Highly recommend this story in the anthology. Alexis & Beth really know how to have us begging for more.
So I was not sure about this book at first but decided to pick it up anyways since I enjoy all of those crime shows. I was not disappointed! This is a fabulous collection of dark stories that each author put their own unique spin on. There are lots of triggers so please heed the warnings. This book grabbed my attention from the beginning and never let go. Some of the stories do have cliffhangers but I am hoping there will be more to come in the future! 💜🖤
Oh my...this book made my heart pound with the different takes in such different stories. I love how none of the stories gave me the typical serial killer vibe, but darn did they give me palpitations. Keep it coming BBB, love these anthologies. Can't wait for the continuation on some of these...always want more!!
I had been waiting for this book to release and man it did not disappoint at all. Each of these stories are dark and twisted in their own way and each of them have you on the edge of your seat. I can't wait to read more from these authors. Highly recommend it especially if you like the dark, twisted, and more thriller type of books.
This anthology will have you locking your doors, checking shadows and loving every second. The group of authors BBB has round up for this one didn't disappoint!
Bleeding Hearts: A Serial Killer Anthology “Gentleman’s Murder Club” by J. A. Cummings
ARC: I received an Advance Reader Copy in order to provide an honest review.
Release date: September 19, 2020
Technical stuff: This story is part of anthology about serial murders. My review only covers this short story. There is NSFW and misogynistic language, violence (to be expected since it’s about serial killers), including threat of sexual violence. If these bother you, then perhaps this isn't the story for you.
The story is told in limited-omniscient third person, from several people's perspectives. There isn’t exactly a cliff-hanger ending in the overarching story line. The "immediate" story is resolved by the end.
Opinions and overview of story (with minimal/no spoilers): It’s a foregone conclusion that there are going to be multiple murders, both given the anthology and the title of this short story. Knowing that, it would be easy to have this be a “fluff” piece – that “popcorn for the brain” sort of story – without much depth or planning. Not so in this case.
The main character is Mirelys, a female FBI agent investigating the “dark net”. We meet the potential murderers both from Mirelys’ perspective and the potential murders’ through change of perspective. When we are seeing what’s inside a murder’s mind, it is consistent with the type of person they are.
It would be easy for the story to either read “flat” or “overblown” with this story’s concept and a foregone conclusion. It does neither. This story had me sitting on the edge of my seat. There was drama and tension, both of which were deftly done. The internal dialogue was startlingly detailed and consistent with the character.
The "immediate" story is resolved by the end, but you are left with a sense of disquiet due to some ambiguity.
Recommendation: I enjoyed this short story, which was masterfully done. I definitely recommend reading this story, although you may want to read it after you’ve read the other short stories; save the best for last!
3.5 This anthology wasn't as bloody and gory and filled with serial killer goodness that I thought it would be. Some of the stories missed the mark for me. Below were some stand outs:
The darkness I know:Rinna Ford I really enjoyed this read even though I felt bad for Nadora and all that she had to deal with. Being surrounded by death can't be easy on anyone. Loved the addition of the greek aspects to the story. It was unexpected but welcomed.
Birthday kisses: Lucy Scott Bryan This one was an interesting read. The main character does birthdays like no one else I know. It was interesting to see what every new birthday would bring. I like the addition of Hendrick and how he was there for her. In looking forward to see what happens next with this story.
The gentlemen's murder club: J.A Cummings I was sucked into this story from the begging. I felt like I was right with Mirelys trying to find out who everyone was. I absolutely loved the online chat aspect of this book. I really home that there is more to come...please.
This anthology has something for everyone; Love, Triggers, Happy Ending and Cliffhangers with promises for more. The authors are so talented in their story telling, I enjoyed reading them all - Hidden Falls High with the Dante's haunting story, Sick Love Notes left me with aching curiosity to know what happens to Aurora, The Darkness I Know wraps everything up night and lovely, Assassin of the Night boy do I need to know what happens next and where that "partnership" leads, Birthday Kisses just breaks my heart, The Gentleman's Murder Club is Everjust still out there and finally Killer Love Letter WOW creepy.
The Gentleman’s Murder Club – J.A. Cummings I really enjoyed reading this story, it’s short and sweet and leaves itself open for more to come in another book if the author chooses to do so. I liked the characters and the plot; it was a fun and intriguing read.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The Darkness I know by Rina Ford. Absolutely loved, I couldn't stop reading if I wanted to. Nadora has went through hell her whole life thinking she is cursed but in reality the Keres have been torturing her for the benefit. When Hadas has Thanatos step in all hell breaks loose. By the way if you don't have strong feels for the God of Death, I question if you have a heart.
I liked the book. Wish some had more to the stories so hope to read the whole book for each story if there is one. There was some of the stories better then the others but it was a interesting read and great stories.
Interesting set of stories. They are all dark, as should be expected with the subject matter, but well done. It is always fun to see how different authors put their own spin on a subject and this anthology is no different.
