In the Shadow of Arnhem

The Battle of Arnhem in September 1944 has been much publicised, with its extraordinary parachute drop and gallant defence by Frost's few men of the bridge at Arnhem. Although the campaign came close to success, its relative failure left the Allies trapped within a thirty-mile stretch of road. The Arnhem debacle saw vast stretches of Holland to the left and right of the salient occupied by enemy forces. These areas of Holland, criss-crossed by unfordable rivers and closely populated by small villages, had to be cleared by Allied troops in platoon or company strength, fighting in tight situations against bitter skilled resistance. There was none of the awesome and inspirational massing of troops seen in the battle of Normandy, for Arnhem itself. Interweaving his engaging narrative style with the eyewitness accounts and personal reminiscences of British, Canadian and Polish troops, Ken Tout reveals how these men performed their heroic deeds. They suffered and died in unheralded, largely forgotten minor skirmishes, but on a scale far exceeding the casualties of the immediate assault on Arnhem. They deserve to be remembered. This is their story.

In short this is not a campaign history or a detailed analysis of the rarely covered actions at Walcheren, the Breskens Pocket, around Limburg and north Brabant and South Beveland.

It is however a collection of first person accounts and memories about those actions in which Canadian, British, Polish and Belgian troops suffered terrible conditions and constant draining losses, against German troops of quality ranging from poor to elite (and I mean here Wehrmacht as well as Waffen SS), but always in defensive positions that required courage, guile, luck and firepower by the allies to overcome them.

To anyone who has read Ken Tout before, or say Patrick Delaforce and a number of recently published or republished memoirs, many of the troops names will be familiar, but there are other contributors whose stories add well to the overall book, including many Canadian personnel and the always hard pressed civilians.

The books uses these people's accounts to chart the progress of the Allied army from the shadow of the operations at Arnhem in September 1944 to the German frontier that winter. For the Walcheren operation this is widened to include men who flew planes on bombing raids or those who piloted landing craft or other vessels.

If you have a knowledge of the these battles and the units involved, and/or have read some of the standard accounts by the particpants, you will still benefit from some new names and experiences.

It does too reinforce further the Dutch peoples own dreadful experiences under occupation and during liberation, and also shows how magnificent a people they are by their fine treatment of men who had just smashed their homes, villages and sometime families to pieces.

If you have not read anything of these now near forgotten battles with the, in my view, under appreciated Canadian, Polish and British units, who fought and died in conditions that often mirrored the wettest and most miserable stretches of their fathers' experiences on the Western Front some 20 years before, then it is a good starting point.

In de schaduw van Arnhem vertelt de vergeten verhalen van betrokkenen, veelal de militairen die het overleefden, deze verschrikkingen van de oorlog. Het boek gaat echter niet over de slag rond Arnhem, al doet de titel het wel een beetje vermoeden. Het gaat meer om de omliggende verhalen en gebeurtenissen die leidde tot de bevrijding van Nederland. Doordat de Market Garden uit liep op een mislukking kwamen de geallieerden geïsoleerd te zitten op een stuk weg van dertig kilometer. Dat niet alleen, de bevoorrading via Antwerpen liep ook vast omdat de toevoer via de Schelde moest. Een gebied dat nog werd bezet door de Duitsers.

Het boek is een verzameling van verhalen van Canadese, Britse, Poolse en Belgische soldaten die verschrikkelijke omstandigheden en verliezen leden. Deze persoonlijke verhalen tonen stuk voor stuk moed, geluk, geloof en vuurkracht van de militairen. Het boek vertelt niet alleen de moed van deze soldaten, maar ook de burgers met hun heldendaden of ze nu groot of klein waren worden niet vergeten en komen voorbij. Stel je maar eens voor, de bevrijders schieten je huis aan gort en toch sta je bereidwillig voor hen klaar, help je ze etc. Moeilijk voor te stellen maar de burgerbevolking deed het.

Het boek brengt aan de hand van getuigenissen de kaart van de geallieerden in beeld. Vanaf de landing bij Arnhem tot aan de winter van 1944 richting Duitsland. Er is ook uitgebreide aandacht voor de situatie rond Walcheren, waar bommenwerpers uiteindelijk de boel plat gooiden, de dijken braken en Walcheren onder water kwam te staan. Een groot offer van Zeeuwen, maar zeker niet onbelangrijk voor de latere bevrijding van Nederland. Helaas niet op het gewenste tijdstip voor boven de rivieren die nog een vreselijke hongerwinter tegemoet gingen.

De auteur heeft op een toegankelijke manier de getuigenissen van de betrokkenen uitgewerkt. Als lezer krijg je veel informatie, wat er toe leidt dat je het boek vaak even weg legt. Het is allemaal best wel heftig en dat moet je toch wel even tot je door laten dringen. Het duurt dan ook best wel even voor je het boek uit hebt. De foto’s in het boek onderschrijven heel goed de gebeurtenissen van die tijd. Foto’s van de betrokkenen, zodat het net even iets persoonlijker wordt.

In de schaduw van Arnhem is een boek dat dateert uit 2010 en dat is geen probleem, ook oude of oudere boeken vertellen hun verhaal. Daarom als je geïnteresseerd bent in geschiedenis en dan met name de Tweede Wereldoorlog moet je ook dit boek lezen. Het geeft een goed beeld in de pogingen Nederland te bevrijden.
