I’m a British author who writes paranormal reverse harem romance books.

I couldn’t survive with tea and potentially swear far too much for any kind of polite society. So I spend most of my days shut inside the writing cave and talking to all the voices in my head. I guess if you’re someone who enjoys slut shaming and “sex shop Barbie” you’ll enjoy this book. But personally, I don’t enjoy when the fmc is slut shaming another woman for acting the only way she knows how in their messed up society. I tried to push through the mild slut shaming and just finish the book, but then Sex Shop Barbie came along. Really? Barbie would be understandable and okay considering Della is a massive bitch, adding Sex Shop in front of it makes zero sense as an insult and is also slut shaming?? I’ve no idea why anyone writing RH would have a slut shamer as the fmc. Not to mention her personality doesn’t add up. She’s introduced as a closed off badass who doesn’t want to give away what her powers are and yet, almost immediately she shows her powers in combat and also opens up to her guys right away. At least I have KU and didn’t buy this.

this was truly the most terrible writing… bad grammar plus unlikeable characters and a ridiculous plot means this one was not for me. a little bit horrific if we’re being completely honest.

description

Some background, when C.J. came to me to ask if I wanted to review her book and I was honored to do it but when I found out which particular book she was offering, I had my hesitation. I had to really think hard, aside from the load I had, since I haven’t had much luck with reverse harem books so I come into reading Destiny Awakened with caution. It can either be really good or really bad.
“All you can do is make yourself strong enough to stand by her when she needs it.”
— Aria, Destiny Awakened

Aria Graves is a foster care child who got out upon hitting eighteen and never looked back. After being discovered as having ‘powers’, she was shipped off immediately to Parkland Academy, a special school for children with powers, to learn how to control their powers and not harm others. She learns to be self-sufficient and independent but mostly kept to herself. She later meets other students (and teachers), and starts forming relationships that come more naturally than before.

In comes, Kyle, Sykes, and Liam, shifters pack, helping Aria with her new move and understanding the “pull” they have towards Aria. Kyle, leader of the group, slowly helps Aria get adjusted to the way of this realm. They started getting to know more about her and learn how to use powers through Aria’s help.

Now, why do I like this book so much?

1. A story that captivated me.
I was so engrossed by the story of two realms, Earth and Mystical, and how Aria is the link between those two worlds. There were many questions that come popping out of my head each time: Aria’s background, and how she came about with her “powers”, the laws of the new realm, conspiracy theories, “backdoor dealings”, etc.
C.J. was able to dive into Aria’s backstory when she learned how to trust people. Yes, Aria had a rough start in life but that didn’t deter her to channel her energy into a positive way. She came out stronger, mind, body, and spirit, she constantly reminded herself in the book. She still had questions about her past but she worries about the future more, which pushed her to train harder and learn what is going on with the current state of the realm she is stuck at.
Some readers may think that this story is a “re-hashed” story at first glance but it is not. There were a lot of interesting things in this book through the characters, if readers pay attention to what was happening to Aria and the people around her. C.J. placed a lot of underlying messages that in the end, come out spectacularly!

2. Perfect execution of multiple-POVs in a book
Each POV used in the book had a purpose in shaping the story and characters. Not a lot of authors are successful in using multiple-POV techniques without confusing readers but C.J. did. Even if there were multi-POVs, it wasn’t overwhelming that made it difficult for me to connect with the characters. It did not dilute or stray away from the main purpose of the book. Each character had their distinct voice and stuck to one chapter per POV, although Aria’s POV, the “main character, receives more chapters) than the others, and whose story and character development is the overall focus of the book. It is a true art to write well in this manner.

3. The impeccable visual imagery with words…
C.J.’s descriptive words gave such vivid imagery that helps readers enter the world of magic and wolf packs, especially the combat scenes. These scenes were the ones I looked forward to since the characters seem like dancing, not fighting, as they try to defend themselves. It like being right in front of the action or like being in the movies.

4. A great resolution for a cliffhanger (huh? but so true for me!)
I was so hesitant with starting a series with a “cliffhanger”. It takes out so much in me that I avoid it as much as possible…so why this book? I was very curious about Aria and C.J.s work that this book was impossible to ignore.
Upon opening the first chapter, the book hooked me immediately and held it well to the end. There was no way I could put the book down, even if I knew at the back of my mind that I will be left hanging. Yes, readers will be left hanging...but I wanted to share that I did not come out angry or frustrated after with how it all turned out. (I read books to have better insight and maybe get a little emotional but not to the point of affecting my mood for the whole day. I want to feel good after or look forward to the next book.) The ending helped solved a few things but also provided me with hope for the next book. This is very rare in my limited experience in this genre and thus would explain why I would rate this book high even if with the cliffhanger. (FYI – I have not rated high marks for cliffhangers…ever!)
Don’t get me wrong, I do not mean to “belittle” others who might feel otherwise. I wanted to share though that fully invested to continue with the series; in that, I’m excited to grab Book 2 and 3 after this review.

5. A colorful and amazing cast of characters…
–> Kyle, the surprising and unique alpha pack leader
Alpha packs are still new for me but from my limited experience on the alpha pack leaders, most of them are hard-headed, arrogant, and annoying. In this case, although Kyle has the “inner fire” of an alpha leader, he is the most understanding and kind based especially on their first impression for Aria (and myself) plus as the story went along; even better was that the rest of the “pack members” exude the same air of understanding towards Aria. They all seem so mature in thought and actions. I enjoyed having not to deal with “immaturity” and too much “drama”.

–> Aria, the “bada**” heroine
Although there were a lot of “alpha claiming” going on, given the culture of the supernatural realm’s “laws” but the main thing is that Aria was still able to be assertive especially when she showed her classmates how far she’d come with combat skills. I love strong and “level-headed” heroines – Aria is one of the strongest ones I’ve currently had to pleasure of reading. She knew from the start that she can defend herself and even others when it comes time, but there are times when she yields to Kyle since he would know more and emphasizes with him on a lot of the situations. She is a true inspiration to the women at the academy.

–> Caleb, “no-need-for-weapons”, combat teacher
It is rare for a man who teaches combat lessons to be humble enough to ask for help. Caleb is one of these people and has no problem admitting that his own skills are not up to standards in preparing the school for a possible attack, let alone a battle. He gave Aria a chance to prove herself as a capable fighter and in training the students.

–> Madame Nines’ insight is spot-on.
She’s the grandmother figure that Aria didn’t have in the human world but surely felt she wanted. It was odd for her to mention this especially when she tried her hardest NOT to form any relationships but she did want to with Madame Nine. She was could possibly be like her mentor/father-figure Alfie in the magical world. She is the procurement officer of the school i.e. magical being with purchasing powers. (Reminds me of an awesome personal shopper!) She seems to whip everything that the students need even before they enter her room…except for Viennese whirls. She was a delight and Aria really bonded with her instantly.

I am so happy that C.J. talked me into giving this book a try.
This book reminds me of the Revenants (Amy Plum) meshed up with Buffy the Vampire Slayer mixed with Hogwarts with themes of bravery, family (pack style), and love. If you have read my review of Amy Plum, it’s one of the memorable books that still leaves me a good feeling each time I think about it. I believe I will be thinking about this book also even after 5 years down the line.
Now, comparing Destiny Awakened with those two series- it is with full respect to state that I really like the book! I was so happy after this book that I immediately messaged C.J. to thank her by squashing my fear of paranormal, harem stories. I cannot thank her enough and is still currently on a “good high”.
Sometimes we don’t need to explain things. They just are. Trust yourself, Aria, and trust the way that you feel. We have enough questions in life without adding to them by questioning ourselves.
— Madame Nines, Destiny Awakened

I highly recommend this book for those who love reading about paranormal fantasy, strong and “rational” heroines, pack groups, harem (straight or reverse), and combat/battle scenes. It has great writing and plot development. The characters are strong and relatable for all. The cliffhanger is a good touch in the end and makes readers want to continue to the next book with renewed hope. C.J. assures me that Book 2 is out and while Book 3 is just around the corner so I did not have to wait long to find out what happens to Aria.

WOW just WOW 🤩 this book was FREAKING AMAZING! I was totally took by surprise by this book!

This book is a Reverse Harem paranormal (PNR) academy series and I definitely loved the plot line and the characters! I’ve read many different PNR academy books and most haven’t hit the spot for me but this one did!

I loved Aria she is a badass and knows it, not only that but she’s funny and she has her own struggles and we do see her second guess herself but it doesn’t stop her and I love it! Also Aria is definitely a feminist she strives to be treated as an equal and won’t let it be any other way, I love how this is explored in her harem and I love how she tell her guys the way she wants to be treated but also understand shifter ways are more different to how she was brought up. I love how Aria and her guys are actively trying to accommodate the other while understanding that sometimes these things take time and things can’t ultimately change over night!

I’m so far loving the relationship between Aria and the guys! They are attentive, supportive and caring, you can’t help but fall in love with them! However I can’t help but feel (and want) that Aria may need more people in her harem, I understand that this may not be the case, however due to her being so powerful I can’t help but feel that ‘more’ is needed. I hope it’s a possibility that is explored in the other books.

I loved the story line in this book! Some people may find this ‘similar’ or a ‘typical’ Academy book. But I think this author has excellently executed this genre and has set hight standards for other RH academy series! This author is extremely talented and I think she’s one to watch for upcoming books

My Favorite Kind of Heroine

Wow, I really enjoyed this book. The main character Aria was definitely a Mary Sue but I love fierce, overly powered females who are constantly underestimated. I get a great deal of satisfaction when they prove how strong they really are. Not a lot of information was provided for the guys but I like them so far. There was one heck of a cliffhanger and I can't wait to read what happens next.

A contemporary, why choose fantasy with a skilled fmc and fated romance.

This was a super quick and easy read that I breezed through in one sitting. The story starts with Aria attending college, where her magical status is discovered, and (of course) she’s sent to attend an academy for supernaturals in another realm.

💕 What was lovely and felt different about this academy story was that mostly everyone was very welcoming of the new girl. Don't get me wrong, I still love a good ol’ bully romance, but I feel like you don't see everyone just getting along all that much.

🤷‍♀️ Aria is very skilled - both naturally and thanks to years of training. Sometimes, she was giving Mary Sue, but she's a fun character and easy to like with a tragic back story.

🙃 I've never been a huge fan of stories with fated mates, and Aria has three of them - Kyle, Sykes and Liam (I can't even with those names). They're a bit one-dimensional at this point and blend together, but I hope I'll get more from them in the next book. Right now, I'm more interested in her gym teacher and headmaster.

🗡️Although there does seem to be a lot going on in the plot, it all feels very low stakes. I think this is because the writing style does nothing to build any tension in the story. Events progress quickly, and Aria processes and moves on just as swiftly. There's no build-up or come-down, no angst and no anticipation. Still, it's only 250 pages, so I guess that's to be expected.

Overall, I think to like this book, you have to accept it for what it is - it's a short, quick, easy read with recognisable tropes and enjoyable characters. If you're looking for something with tons of world-building, character development, an intricate plot and political intrigue, this isn't the book for you.

••Magic, Demons & Shifters☑️
••Amazing storyline☑️
••A keep you on the edge of your seat cliffhanger☑️

I absolutely admire Aria's personality of sass and strength. She herself is strong and capable enough to take matters in her own hands. No one can make her step back, not even her three mates (she most likely will leave them if they try to🤭).
We meet her mates- Kyle, Skye & Liam but I feel that there's is a lot left to learn about them.

There are parts of humour, love and badass fights and I absolutely enjoyed every second of it!!
Ps: The cliffhanger will actually make you get moving to find the next book as soon as possible.

I just finished this book. My mind and heart are all over the place. Thank goodness I don't need to wait for the next book to come out because CJ Cooke ends on a mind bending cliffhanger while she just ripped my heart out! She made me cry! She made me laugh and smile too!
Her writing style reminds me of Sue Graftons Kinsey Milone which means she grabs you from the start and drags you through her book and just increases the pace. This author is a genius and if you don't read this book it is your loss cos im truly hooked! CJ Cooke is a drug and im a willing addict!

Before I begin my review for Destiny Awakened by C. J Cooke I would personally like to thank the author, the publishers and Booksprout for the opportunity to read this ARC and I have reviewed it honestly.

Magic, demons and supernatural beings, Destiny Awakened by C. J Cooke is an excitingly epic supernatural academy story. Prepare to fall in love with three sexy shifters, whimsical friends and a kickass female protagonist as demons, bitches, fervent foursomes and mysterious powers come out to play. Destiny Awakened introduces us to the incredibly addictive world of the Destiny series and features a polyamorous relationship between one female and three men.

Destiny Awakened features, but is not limited to, the following themes:
○ Reverse harem
○ New adult romance
○ Smut
○ Supernatural academy
○ Mates
○ Kickass heroine
○ Humour
○ Fighting
○ Magic
○ Destiny
○ Demons
○ Shifters

My overall rating for Destiny Awakened is…

5 Stars!

Keep a spare pair of panties handy because Destiny Awakened is pantie dropping hot. Add some laugh out loud comebacks and Aria could almost be the sister Aelin Galathynius never had. With scars, sass, skills and secrets, you can’t not love her. Looking past the characters, I could not fault the storyline and the writing was just incredible. I cannot recommend this book enough.

Do you ever get really annoyed when you finish a good book? Like irrationally angry that the book was too good? OK maybe I’m just the odd one out here but I finished this book and then I was mad that it was good. Why, you ask? Well because now I have to read the next book in the series! Oh sorry, did you think there was a method to my madness? Ha, well there isn’t. If you wanna get sucked into a vortex of hot AF shifters, fated mates, reverse harem goodness with demons, a not-quite-human bad ass FMC, and an academy setting then Destiny Awakened by CJ Cooke is for you!

Awesome start

There were a few errors with spelling, grammar and sentence structure at times.... But I absolutely LOVED this book. Aria is such a strong badass chick but with many layers. She loves hard, is vulnerable at times and truly cares despite people hurting her in the past. Aria is unsure about what she is and her magic, but she knows her heart and what kind of person she wants to be. She entered this world and is suspicious at first but then everything feels right and she starts to feel connected to others. She accepts the mate bonds and I love the relationships between the three. I wonder if she will have more mates as well. I love how she trains the others and helps them be strong as well. Figuring out her magic will be interesting especially with the new development. Who is letting in the demons? How will the prime alpha respond to Aria?

Typical mean girl bully. Misogynistic males. Fated mates. Some mm with more to probably develop. Medium steam. Slight multiple POVs (4 chapters are from the guys). Ready for more.

Aria is living her life, training with Archie at the gym.. going to college.. but these attacks on the humans are getting worse and they start testing everyone for magic. Aria already knows she has magic and when she gets grabbed and shoved onto a portal, she ends up at Packlands Academy where she has to stay to learn and control her magic.. but not everything is as it seems ..
She meets Kyle, Liam and Sykes who are shifters and they are convinced that she’s their mate.. their banter and insta attraction is fun to read. While there is drama, there isnt between the four of them.
I liked that Aria was aware of her strengths and was super trained.. this is a medium burn reverse harem .. I would say there are light triggers especially about Arias past but it is an excellent start to a supernatural series.. there is a cliffhanger but the revelation at the end of the book is awesome.. it’s a fairly quick read for me anyway but I throughly enjoyed it.

I definitely enjoyed this book. The main character aria is bas a** as heck and she isn’t afraid to show everyone how bad a** she is. She’s definitely a character I can relate to and I can put myself into her shoes easily. The men on the other hand seemed like we didn’t really get to know them too well in this book so I hope in the next book we get to learn more about them. There was definitely insta love in this book but I don’t usually mind that sort of thing so it didn’t bother me too much. so other readers be warned if you don’t like insta love.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Excellent debut novel!

I hope that any future readers disregard the negative reviews left on this book. This is the author's debut novel, and as such, she is still learning. Yes, it does need some editing - but not to the extent that it detracts from the story. Please don't let that put you off!

The story itself is very good, I find it to be quite unique - it's not the usual academy book. I was fully immersed in the story, and enjoyed it very much. I liked the dynamic between Aria and her guys. And the ending! Fantastic cliffhanger.

Looking forward to seeing what the author has in store for us in the future - I think she'll be one to watch ❤

Aria is a human with some magic, or so she thinks. She ends up at a school for supernaturals and starts to come into her own, along with her three (I’m hoping eventually five) mates. An excellent paranormal/fantasy reverse harem.

I really liked the idea of this book, but ended up DNFing at about 60%

The FMC is started off as someone who never trusts, has loads of trauma and is very secretive. There is no trust built up between characters - immediately when she gets pulled to this school she's told someone her entire life story (for no reason?) and then falls in insta love with her mates and then tells them too.

The guys have zero character and the FMC is so irritating and switches moods so much it's hard to keep track.

Also within the first week at this school she's basically told by the headteacher that the entire future rests on her. No thanks.

I you like Academy this is a must read. it has magic shifters you name it. It has a strong fmc with sexy male characters. The book leaves you wanting more waiting for the next book. A lot of people can relate to being in the foster care system in the main character is just that. She gets out of the system and makes one hell of a life for herself.
