I've read this devotional book most days over 4-plus years, and it never gets old or stops challenging me spiritually. The author was a Carmelite priest who wrote these meditations for Carmelite nuns, but they're easily adaptable to those of us living in the world who seek a closer relationship with God.
The book contains many quotes from Carmelites such as St. Teresa of Avila, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. John of the Cross, St. Elizabeth of the Trinity, and others, as well as St. Augustine, St. Bernard, and many more.
I cannot imagine ever outgrowing this book!
It was written in the mid-20th century; to me, compared to older classics such as The Imitation of Christ, it seems uniformly relevant and applicable. (The Imitation is amazing ... it just requires a little more tweaking to apply to my own life.)
This book is best suited to Catholics who attend the traditional Latin mass because the Sunday and major feast day devotions are tailored to the propers for those days. However, the entire book is organized according to overarching spiritual themes and can be read profitably by any Catholic (and any Christian who is open to Catholic doctrine).
It is a beautiful book, too, with a nice leather cover and gilt-edged pages -- which makes it more of a shame that it was poorly proofread. Nothing major, but typos appear regularly. I would not knock off a star for that, but I hope Baronius Press is aware and will fix them!
