Often when I pick up manga based on a light novel I end up kicking myself, wondering why I even bothered as the transition is seldom pulled off well--I have made it a general rule to stick to Light novels and skip manga.
However, this adaptation is so well done. The characters, story, and the art! oh my, the art! Uno did an amazing job of adapting this. fun read for fans of fantasy.
I feel like so much has happened but also nothing has really happened. It's progressing in a way without actual development of characters or the overall plot, just a small tangent story line branch, I'm not quite sold on this yet but with that last panel I'm curious what is coming next.
Or at least lost in the magical encroaching labyrinth that is kept under the school. Poor Oliver, Pete, and Michela get caught in its nightly expansion only to find themselves being head hunted by two upperclassmen who immediately start fighting each other and one gives birth... If I wasn't so confused I'd be barfing. But at least the bone creature looks cool.
Then Nanao shows up, declares her intent on suicide, but then that gets muddled into "Oliver rejected me so I'm depressed and want to die" but then some insta-friendship therapy solves the problem.
Uh... More Katie-PETA stuff and the social backlash angst therein... I mean, I get it, I'd be all over Care of Magical Creatures class and in this case she's a Hermione/House Elf parallel, but... dammit this really is an alternate Harry Potter... again, WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?
Overall, the premise, though extremely vague, has potential and the characters, though currently (mostly) cookie-cutter basic, are a good starting point. But so far...the story is just so bland and boring.
