4.5 stars. Gods design animals for Earth! Each chapter focuses on 1-3 animals and the thoughtful creative process on the how and why an animal is the way they are. At the end of each chapter are bits of information about the animals mentioned.

It's really interesting how there's a God who sends an angel as an agent to Roman Gods in order to design creations for Him. I like how there's reason in the creation, making it a fun way of explaining the who, what, why, and how. The cast of characters are all likeable and have their quirks. They share the spotlight with their animal creations. The plot is linear so readers won't have to worry too much about having to read from the first book. Some new characters do get introduced but each volume includes a quick introduction for each person.

Give to middle schoolers and up who enjoy manga and like to learn along the way!

Ahh, the humor is back! I had thought that the concept had run its course, but this volume was hilarious. I think that the comedy works when we get the request first and see the development, not when we hear about weird animal characteristics. The later just seems like a fun science textbook, not a manga. There is less of that here and more wild reveals in this volume.

This is such an odd series. There's humor, and it's all a bit ridiculous, and then you realize you've actually learned something. I also appreciate the reference pages. I know it's silly and fantasy, but a part of me almost feels like I'm reading nonfiction. And enjoying it, which is weird for me. I can't wait to see what I learn in the next volume.

There's apparently also a separate plant team. I wish we could see a day in the life of both the insect team and the plant team. That would be really cool.

Heaven's Design Team is one of the first anime I watched just from a TikTok rec and when I ran into the English translation by @kodanshamanga at a a store, I knew I had to grab it.

I'm now up to volume 5 but for those unfamiliar the premise is god created the heavens, earth, and all the creatures... except he got exhausted designing animals and outsourced the job to the design department.

In heaven's design department, the team collaborates to come up with all kinds of interesting creatures to meet their divine client's requirements. This volume tackles requests such as "birds that don't lay eggs", "vegetarian piranhas", and "nightmarish animals."

Following every chapter there is an encyclopedia of real animals. If your a fan of Cell At Work and want just a calm and cute book about animals (with great canon non-binary representation!) I'd pick this up!
