I have seen death. It speaks to me. It tells me all your sins...
When John hears whispers coming from the ancient fireplace, evil begins to bleed into his mind, and his tyrannical narcissistic master Hugo Black is in the firing line.
But after the demon inside John's heart takes hold of him, forcing a murder of an innocent, both men must try to bury the evidence.
But why are the police at the door? Who has sent them? Will John flea into the arms of the law, or will he choose to lie and stay under the cruel reign of Hugo? Or will the creature stalking the hallways at night consume what little humanity he has left?
An enjoyable read, I was a bit confused with the Pilof sections as they didn't seem to connect with Hugo and John's but all is revealed at the end of this prequel.
I'm not keen on Hugo as a person, John is his butler/housekeeper but Hugo doesn't treat him well, I feel for John. I like Jay's writing style as he creates feelings as a reader for the characters and that helps form a bond. John seems a nice guy who helps Hugo but things take a turn when an artist, a woman, turns up to scult a statue and things unfold.
I'm wanting to read the next one so I can see where the story goes. Curious about Azrael and the fireplace also!
Wow, I don't think I've ever hated a character as much as I hated Hugo! Eugh, he made my blood boil! Creepy, atmospheric, lovely and dark! I cannot get enough of his writing! A short read but packed with all the stuff!!! More please!!!!
Some cracking twists and turns. Keeps you guessing and gives you some interesting insights into the main characters involved - a great read. Thanks Jay
