Walk Run Soar is a 52-week devotional guide designed to help you train in both body and spirit. Each daily reading starts with a Bible verse and then has a reading that is written to uplift and encourage you in your physical sport and in your spirit. There is a short reading for each day along with a question to help you think about your faith called Faith Step at the end of each day's reading. There is an inspirational quote from someone encouraging each day and there is a running/walking tip from Coach Shawn each day. There is also space to keep track of your physical goals for each day. It isn't a lot of space but you could use an extra journal to do this if you want more room to write. At the end of the book, there are several appendixes with help in forming a running group, warm-up drills for runners, and helps for running races from 5 K to a half-maration.
Walk Run Soar is a truly helpful book for those that want to exercise and run every day to meet new goals. There is a lot of physical helps in this book but there is also a lot of encouragement for keeping your faith aligned with your body work. It is a small package that contains a lot of information. Along with that information, I like how the author helps keep your faith encouraged along with working your body out. Each reading is uplifting and helps to focus on the Bible to keep your faith in today's world.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions within this review are my own.

This is a complicated book. The subtitle of the book states that this is a running devotional, and it is not joking. Most devotionals have at their core some sort of spiritual principles. This book is about running. It is written by someone who runs for people who run. And all of that would be well and good on its own, but is made even more complicated by the way that the author talks about her life as well as her running in ways that I find rather puzzling. For example, this book is co-written by the author's husband, but the author spends a lot of time talking about her first husband, who died with cancer, making this a book that dwells on problems of death and mortality as well as running. Similarly, the author has some strange quirks in her running habits, such as engaging in long runs without spending a lot of time to scope the course. Sometimes she comments that she struggled with her pacing because a course had an unusual layout, something that a bit of scouting would have made clear, allowing her to have a better gameplan than simply run the course. For someone who runs as much as the author does, she seems to lack a sense of strategy or tactics that would make her more successful at it.
This book is about 250 pages long and can be divided into two parts. After a foreword and an introduction, there are 52 relatively short devotionals that take up a bit more than 200 pages of the book. Many of these come with titles that spring from the Bible or from a summary of the contents of the devotional, including "Friend and Forerunner," talking about Jesus Christ (25), or "Building Spiritual Muscles" (19), or "Walking With Purpose" (3), among many such examples. At the end of each devotional, the co-author gives some coaching notes as if he is there encouraging you, and each devotional ends with some sort of space to write thoughts and notes and goals for the week. The book is supposed to take a year to go through, and when the author isn't talking about her running in a physical sense she is talking about her spiritual race and the complexities and tragedies and struggles of her life in a rather poignant fashion. After all of this is done, the second part of the book then consists of seven appendices that talk about how to form a running group (i), warm-up drills for runners (ii), 5k (iii), 10k (iv), half-marathon (v), weekly mileage charts (vi), and annual mileage charts (vii), for the truly ambitious among this book's readers.
Ultimately, this book's usual and deeply emotional content as well as the author's lack of sound racing preparation do not make this a bad book by any means. It is a perfectly worthwhile book so long as you care about running a lot and you have an interest in running a lot more as well as reading a woman talking about her life and a lot about her husband while her second husband chimes in frequently about how to improve one's running. This book is clearly not directed to me, but that's not a bad thing at all. There are a great many books that are not written to me and many of them end up being quite worthwhile in some fashion. In this case, the author assumes (not entirely unjustly) that her audience is going to be women who are Christians as well as interested in running. There is an expectation that while men write to be read by both men and women, that women write expecting only women to pay attention to what they have to say. And this book could have been better if the author realized that she was speaking to a larger audience than she thinks.
n Walk Run Soar, Dorina Gilmore Young and Shawn Young have teamed up to wrote a brand-new running devotional. They designed this book as a book to be read once a week for a year. Readers can journal and keep track of their running schedule and goals each week. Each chapter begins with a scripture verse to medicate on, a faith fuel story, a faith step, an inspiration quote, notes from coach Shawn, and a journal to log workouts and goals. The book also contained 7 appendixes: “how to form a running group, warm-up drills for runners, walk run soar 5k, 10k, half marathon, weekly mileage chart, and annual mileage chart”.
Throughout the book, Dorina shared how she grew to love running and how she trained up and finished her goals. She begins the book by sharing how she trained up for her first half marathon 26.2 miles and how she leaned on scriptures to help her get through. She shared the truths found in Joshua and how he was instructed not to be afraid because God was with Him, wherever he goes. She also explained how ten minutes of walking or running in nature can boost our moods and reduce our stress levels. She also revealed how she lost her first husband to cancer in 2014 and how she still raised their three daughters and eventually she met Shawn. She rediscovered her love for running and explained how she leaned on God’s assistance when she runs and trains.
I would recommend this awesome book to anyone who is first learning to walk/ run a marathon or just wanting to get more in shape. I immensely liked how they included coaching tips and workout samples to help people write down and stick to their goals. I also liked how they shared how to fuel your body correctly for a run and how to keep hydrated. One of my favorite tips was one about how to swing your arms and how to use that for acceleration to keep moving forward. I also enjoyed how Shawn encouraged readers to engage and build their core and this in turn will help in their running. I loved how they included goals and sample goals to help readers to build up to a 10k, if they so choose to do so. I also liked how the included a scriptural aspect to the book and they shared their experiences they have felt during their own training and runs. I believe this is the first style of a Christian devotional that discussed running and walking and training and using God’s Word to help motivate and inspire you to complete the race and soar.
"I received this book free from the publisher, Bethany House/ Chosen for my honest review.”
I am NOT a seasoned runner, but I have done enough to be intrigued by the concept of a running/walking devotional. There is absolutely no doubt that if you run or workout regularly, this would be a fantastic book to encourage you to make the most of your time - great tips, inspiring quotes and a space for journaling. What surprised me is how applicable this devotional is for non runners. Each easy to read chapter used an illustration from running to point to an inspiring or encouraging biblical truth - that I think even the most sedentary reader could relate to (although you may find yourself inspired to pull on your running shoes!) So whether you have a runner in your life, or simply want a fantastic devotional that is practical empowering and relatable, then grab a copy for the Christmas stockings (and maybe a good pair of running socks!) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I am not a runner or a walker but I have enjoyed perusing Dorina Gilmore Young’s newest release “Walk, Run, Soar”. A 50 day devotional. This isn’t your typical one verse, a couple of hundred words and then journaling prompt type devotional. Yes, it does start with a Scripture as a base, and yes there is an essay using a life moment, training or race story. Dorina also infuses Biblical themes and stories in them as well. Each devotion closes out with a “Faith Step”. Action steps to take, either something to ponder or a journaling prompt. Not all have to do with running. There are “Inspiration Moment” in each devotion too. Notable quotes by coaches, athletes, other runners. There are a few non-sports notables as well.
Her husband Shawn comes in with training tips each day and there is a weekly log each day to note your miles and whatever else you want to include about your workouts.
This is not just a devotional for runners, there are a few appendices in the back of the book. Essentially, “how to train” sections. Whether you are training for a 5k, a 10k or something else.
I think it’s a lovely devotional, whether you are a runner or not. I could still relate to the essays.
First of all, I would recommend this book to you EVEN IF you aren't a runner. I am more of a walker, yet Dorina's book encourages me as well! Weaving her personal story of love and loss into her journey as a runner, Dorina invites the reader to join her in pursuing the way of hope, the trail of perseverance, and the highs and lows we all must traverse in the path of life. I am finding this to be an easy read, yet it is quite reflective, and I am already eager to purchase copies for friends who I know could use these short devotional doses of coaching and inspiration!
Whether you are already a marathon runner or just starting out walking like me, this book is for you. It guides you in your activity but also in your faith. It teaches you to seek God even in this your physical activities. He will help you learn to soar. The authors have a podcast and you can even sign up to join them on a virtual race if you desire for more. I totally recommend this book for your physical and spiritual walk. I was given a chance to read this book before launch but all opinions are my honest ones.
Dorina Gilmore Young is an inspiring storyteller. Each “Faith Fuel” brings me in deeper communion with God and draws my attention to the hope I have in him! The practical advice by Coach Shawn is helpful and easy to implement. You want this book in your library because it will help you grow in your mind, body and soul! Let’s all walk, run, soar!
Dorina has inspired me over the past few years to better see and understand the role that running (and exercise) can play in my faith. Her new 52-week runners devotional, Walk Run Soar, doesn't disappoint! It's filled with reflections for both the body and soul. Highly recommend!
No matter your pace, whether you walk, run, or soar, this book will give you some insights for the path you are taking.
Dorina Gilmore Young, with her husband Shawn, bring a fifty-two-week devotional for people that like to be active at whatever pace. Dorina is a runner, both for competition and for fun, and she shares many of the insights that she has gained by running. She lost her first husband to cancer and spends time dwelling on that relationship throughout many of the devotionals. She also spends time on learning to hear Jesus, serving his mission, and conditioning our bodies for his work. Each chapter is provided with a short narrative called Faith Fuel, an action item called Faith Step, a short couple of sentences for Inspiration, and a word of encouragement from her husband, Coach Shawn. I have spent time reading a devotional each day after my bible reading and have found it very uplifting. Each devotional also gives a section to write down notes during each day’s workouts and/or runs. My husband uses this as he is an active runner and it has helped him think through some things when he runs.
I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.
I really liked the weekly devotionals and how the biblical lesson was placed with a running analogy. I would have gotten more out of this book if I had taken time to perform and reflect on the faith steps, which is why I may re-visit this book again in the future. I found the running notes to be fairly simplistic for an experienced runner, but the training plans for races and the exercises in the appendices are very good. This is a devotional book that can reach a wide range of people who have active lifestyles - from walkers to a variety of distance runners.
Amazing It really paralleled faith with running. I read it daily like a devotional wishing for more. The author did a fantastic job tying scripture to our life's journey
I recieved this devotional through a giveaway. I highly recommend this book. I am not a runner but I do walk a lot. So many good things to encourage me and keep me going. Thank you Dorina!
As an avid runner and triathlete, I love learning about form, technique and pearls of wisdom in sport while balancing family and faith. This books beautifully interweaves running tips with spiritual depth. I have gained so much by this book in both spirit and mechanics and I can honestly say, the quality of my runs have dramatically improved. This book will stir your soul and sharpen your mind.
This is an excellent resource for walkers, runners and those who want to get started being more active. The devotions offer encouragement, perspective and inspiration to draw closer to God and to appreciate the beauty of His creation. There are coaching tips at the end of each devotional and some great bonus resources (info. on how to form a running group, warm-up drills for runners, training plans and mileage charts) located in the appendix. Dorina & Shawn have a way of encouraging & inspiring people to exercise both their bodies & faith. Love all the storytelling, devotion & advice for getting & staying fit. Enjoy how she relates running with real life stories. Perfect book for anyone who wants to start getting in shape & stay focused on God at same time. Highly recommend this book for anyone even those who don't read much. Chapters are short with Bible verses, stories, inspiration & notes.
It’s just a basic book about starting to walk or run. Appropriate title would be walk, learn, pray. Kind of memoir and all about praying which is a good thing but nothing fascinating about running.
