Librarian Note: There is more than one author with this name.
Sir Alfred Patrick Caldwell-Moore, CBE, Hon FRS, FRAS, known as Patrick Moore, was an English amateur astronomer, who is the most well known English promoter of astronomy. Moore wrote numerous books on the subject, as well as make public, television and radio appearances, over the course of his long life. He is credited as having done more than any other to raise the profile of astronomy among the British general public.
The book is written in a very simple easy to understand manner with a sense of humor at places. Many of the concepts are well explained. However you tend to loose your way in the maze of jargons and names of countless stars, constellations and galaxies. It seems to me the subject of astronomy is such that it can't be grasped in a single reading, however much the author tries to simplify it. But overall a fairly good book to get started on astronomy. This is an extremely readable basic primer on astronomy. It doesn't overwhelm, but it's sufficiently detailed to leave you feeling that you've acquired a wealth of fascinating scientific knowledge.
The big plus is the writing style. Patrick Moore's familiar voice and wry wit shine through, enhancing the experience and making you feel as if you're with him, inside an extended edition of The Sky at Night!
Finally got around to finishing this. Now I just need to find a place to live with less light pollution. A great introduction to all things astronomical.
A great introductory book into Astronomy! It's very simply written, it's made for those who knows nothing about this field and who would like to get started. The book doesn't really go so much further away, but it gives you the tools and knowledge required to be able to get into this field of science and read more. I loved how the author gathers all the important information at the end of each chapter and puts them in a box so you can know what's really important to focus on and to keep them in mind. I also love the charts and figures that enable you to understand what the author is talking about, and the appendices at the end of the book that is filled with valuable information. This is definitely a Must-Read book if you are one of those who are very interested in Astronomy.
A wonderful introduction into modern astronomy by the late Sir Patrick Moore. Charming wee book, written in an enjoyable and easily understandable manner.
Some parts are a little bit dates as this book was written around 2002 but enjoyable none the less. Nice light reading and a great intro into Astronomy.
A really good read about an often difficult to explain topic.
I got lost somewhere around chapter 14 but I will concede that this is most likely something that I just couldn't get my head fully around and is not the fault of the author. On the plus side it makes me want to find out why I did not understand this area.
Overall, a great and accessible introduction to a topic that can be hellish to navigate.
