The Essential Tomb of Dracula series continues featuring tales of Dracula through the ages - from when he first became a vampire and eventually Lord of the Undead to his resurfacing in modern times. Collects stories from Tomb of Dracula Magazine 2-6, Dracula Lives! 1-13, and Frankenstein Monster 7-9.
Marvin A. "Marv" Wolfman is an award-winning American comic book writer. He is best known for lengthy runs on The Tomb of Dracula, creating Blade for Marvel Comics, and The New Teen Titans for DC Comics.
I liked the Tomb of Dracula series because of its consistency, both in its creative team and its storylines. However, this volume was different, and was still great. This volume is anthology made up of Dracula stories taken from different times in histories. Marvel did a cool thing here, as rather than reprint the stories in the order they were published, they printed them as they chronologically occurred. It worked great, and made this volume a real gem.
One side note I will mention. Gene Colan and Tom Palmer were the art team on the color Tomb of Dracula comic, and the art was perfect for the comic. However, in this volume we see Gene Colan inked by a few different artists, and while the art was by no means bad, it just didn't match the art with Tom Palmer inking. I think Tom Palmer's impact on the art was sometimes overlooked, but in hindsight it's obvious he was very important in the look of the art.
Overall the four Essential Tomb of Dracula volumes are some of the best horror comics ever published, and surely the best Dracula comic. A must for horror comic fans.
Not so much a collection of Marvel's Tomb of Dracula comics as an assortment of comics featuring Dracula, amounting to a collection of short stories, arranging in chronological order, charting the rise of Vlad Tepes and his transition to the vampire Dracula which continues through the centuries to the present day (1970s) of the comics. Some great artwork here and eloquent prose, but a little repetitive on the stories (someone bests Dracula and he gets bloody revenge or Dracula wrongs someone who "kills" him, until his next resurrection [when darkness falls again or someone foolishly removes the stake from his corpse]).
The Lord of the Undead plays the perfect anti-hero in this compendium of Marvel Dracula stories. Some of the better writing found in mainstream 1970s comics plus high-quality artwork mean that these tales hold up to the passage of time almost as well as Dracula himself. Highly recommended!
