Jimmy Burns was born in Madrid in 1953. His father the late Tom Burns met his mother Mabel Maranon while working in the British embassy in Madrid during the Second World War. Jimmy contributes Spanish language media outlets and publishes his books in Spanish translation as Jimmy Burns Maranon. His childhood was spent straddling cultures -Britain, Castille, and Catalonia. He went to school at a British school in Madrid, then a preparatory school in London before studying for his O and A-levels at the Jesuit Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. He took a BA honours degree in Latin American & Iberian Studies at University College, London and an MA in the politics and government of Latin America at the Institute of Latin American Studies in London and The London School of Economics and Political Science. On leaving university, he spent two years teaching English to foreign students, and travelling, gaining experience as a free-lance journalist writing about Latin America and Spain. His early published work included articles for the Catholic Herald and The Tablet. During the 1970's he was commissioned by the BBC to write the script for an Everyman documentary on the Brazilian Archbishop, Helder Camara. He also worked as a researcher for Yorkshire TV, contributing to a critically acclaimed film presented by Robert Kee on the death of Franco and Spain's transition to democracy.
In 1977 Jimmy joined the Financial Times and was posted to Portugal as Lisbon correspondent, reporting also on Spain. He also became a regular contributor to the London Observer, The Christian Science Monitor, and The Economist, as well as the BBC, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and Radio Nederlands. From 1980-2 he worked for the Financial Times' international desk based in London before being posted to Buenos Aires, as the newspaper's southern cone correspondent.
He arrived in Buenos Aires in the middle of a military palace coup and three months before the invasion of the Falkland Islands by the Argentine armed forces sparked off a three-month war with Britain. He was the only full-time British foreign correspondent to remain in Argentina prior to, during, and well beyond the conflict, covering the country's transition to democracy, as well as political developments in Chile, Uruguay, and Paraguay. He continued to regularly contribute articles on Latin America to other media outlets in the UK, Europe, and the US.
In mid-1986 he returned to London to work at the Financial Times and prove himself as an author. Advised by his agent Caroline Dawnay, he agreed to be signed up by Liz Calder and Nigel Newton as one of the first authors of the most innovative independent publishing houses to emerge from the 1980's, Bloomsbury, with his book, on Argentina and the Falklands War, The Land that lost its Heroes. It won the 1988 Somerset Maugham Award for non-fiction. He followed this up with Beyond the Silver River: South American encounters, based on a collection of personal diaries he kept while living and travelling in South America. In the mid 1990's he was encouraged by David Reynolds and Penny Phillips, then editors at Bloomsbury to write the first full-length biography of Diego Maradona, and subsequently a history of FC Barcelona and the Catalan people. Together with writers like Nick Hornby, Simon Kuper, and Peter Davies, he was praised by the critics for breaking new boundaries in football writing. In between, he was commissioned by John Murray, another independent publisher at the time, to compile and write Spain: A Literary Companion. In Spain, he was co-author of Dossier Diana a book on the death of Princess Diana published by El Pais/Aguilar. Искрено се надявам, че ще ви допадне четенето на тази книга — също както за мен беше удоволствие да я превеждам. Дори да си мислите, че знаете всичко за футбола, Световните първенства, задкулисните сделки и самия Дон Диего, повярвайте ми, ще останете изненадани. Има още доста какво да се научи... и Джими Бърнс предлага един прекрасен начин да наваксаме с пропуските си :) Така че — нападайте смело! :)

Ponoć Diego Maradona zapytany przez dziennikarza o "Rękę Boga" odpowiedział: "Burns na mnie naszczał". Ciężko jednak się z nim zgodzić, bo według mnie Brytyjczyk w swojej książce opisuje Diega z sympatią i współczuciem, w książce obrywa się jedynie Maradonie.... Maradonie jako produktowi marketingowym stworzonemu do robienia pieniędzy - symbolowi komercyjnych przemian, jakie zaszły w sporcie na przełomie lat osiemdziesiątych i dziewięćdziesiątych.
Na niewyobrażalnym talencie Maradony żerowali wszyscy: agenci, kluby, politycy, federacje sponsorzy czy mafia, przy czym warto zaznaczyć, że FIFA niewiele różniła się w tej materii od neapolitańskiej camorry. Całą swoją karierę Maradona produkt zarobił dla siebie, ale przede wszystkim dla innych, góry pieniędzy, za co przyszło drogo zapłacić Diego człowiekowi. Od małego był faszerowany podejrzanymi lekami, potem popadł w uzależnienie od kokainy i zanim dobił do czterdziestki był właściwie wrakiem człowieka. Oczywiście sam piłkarz świętoszkiem nie był i Burns dość szczegółowo opowiada o telenoweli w jakie zmieniło się życie Diega kiedy stał się Maradoną, ale czy trudno się dziwić hulaszczemu trybowi życia człowieka, który w młodości nie miał niczego i nagle z dnia na dzień zyskał sobie niemal boski status?
Ręka boga to też opowieść o Argentynie - kraju szukającym własnej tożsamości, kraju popieprzonym, dziwnym, zabobonnym, gotowym zawsze znaleźć kozła ofiarnego odpowiedzialnego za własne przywary i zaniedbania, którego Maradona zdaje się być nieodrodnym synem.
Ręka boga to poruszająca historia o tym jak tragicznym połączeniem dla człowieka może być fenomenalny talent w połączeniu ze słabą wolą, niedomagającą głową i złymi doradcami*.
*Moim zdaniem warto zestawić sobie losy Diego Maradony z losami niewiele młodszego równie genialnego Michaela Jordana, symbolu analogicznych komercyjnych przemian w koszykówce.

Kisah hidup pemain bolasepak era 80an yang penuh kontroversi. Bila sebut nama Maradona saya hanya ingat insiden 'handball'nya di Piala Dunia 1986 menentang England. Satu kesalahan yang disaksikan oleh seluruh dunia kecuali pengadil!
Tetapi kisah pemain dari Argentina ini mengandungi lebih dari itu. Dilahirkan di dalam keluarga yang miskin tetapi mempunyai etika kerja yang tinggi dan jujur, Maradona dapat membantu ayah dan ibunya keluar dari belenggu kemiskinan hanya dengan bakat bermain bolasepak. Malangnya, di situ jugalah bibit-bibit kejatuhan beliau mula disemai. Dengan wang dan kemasyhuran yang melimpah, Maradona gagal menahan dirinya daripada godaan dadah dan wanita.
Buku ini diterbitkan pada 1996 dan edisi ini adalah terbitan semula pada tahun 2010, maka ia tidak meliputi kematian Maradona pada tahun 2020. Rasanya ada edisi baru yg akan diterbitkan semata-mata untuk menambah maklumat sehingga akhir hayatnya.

Diego is my hero. Did you see him strutting around in that Shark Skin suit during the last World Cup? Pure unbridled role model...we will see if that opinion changes after the reading of this biography.

Well, finished this bio during my 13 hour wait at the Shelter Bay Ferry Landing, and man do I love Diego. What a pompous, egotistical demigod! What could be more telling of his personality than the details surrounding the Hand of God incident? That whole game in Mexico is the man DIEGO in a microcosm. A contradiction. A walking oxymoron. A perfect storm of polar opposites. He would have made a great Bruin had he chosen a different sport :)
As for the book itself, I was often a little disheartened because the author too often assumed the reader was already familiar with Diego's achievements, and struggles to counter that successful image with the brutal truth about his downfall. Much of the discourse painted a grim picture of the soccer player, with only a few words here and there which exonerated and celebrated his talent. I kept thinking to myself "man, he doesn't sound so great, why did everyone think so highly of this man?" It was as if the achievements of Diego could go unmentioned because spending anytime confirming his amazing skill on the pitch would be a moot, if not rhetorical waste of type space. As a person who encountered the man briefly during the world cup finals and knew nothing of the history that is Diego I would have liked a little more positive light shed on the subject rather than scratch my head through this gossip style rag. Yet, despite this almost damning account of Diego's career, he still remains my choice of role model in the world of soccer, and from now on, all soccer will be cast in the shadow that the demigod Diego casts.

“Maradona. Ręka Boga” to jedna z najlepszych biografii sportowych, jakie czytałem. Jimmy Burns w poszukiwaniu prawdy odarł Diego Maradonę z boskości, jaką przypisywały mu miliony fanów piłki nożnej i sam Diego.
Autor przedstawił obraz człowieka zagubionego, który osiągnąwszy szczyt, błyskawicznie stoczył się z niego na samo dno. To historia o człowieku, który wyrwał się ze slumsów i przebojem wdarł się na absolutny top światowego futbolu. Zrealizował swoje marzenia, ale zrobił to ogromnym kosztem.
Jimmy Burns bardzo sprawnie i ciekawie opisał losy Maradony począwszy od dziecięcych lat spędzonych na biednych przedmieściach Buenos Aires, przez lata chwały piłkarskiej kariery, po powolne rujnowanie wizerunku boskiego Diego w czasach kariery trenerskiej i przedwczesną śmierć w listopadzie 2020 roku. W trakcie tych 60 lat zmieniał się nie tylko Maradona, ale także i Argentyna oraz cały piłkarski świat – o tym także szeroko pisze autor tej biografii.
Dzięki uchwyceniu wielu wątków jest to książka nie tylko dla fanów futbolu, ale także dla wszystkich zainteresowanych tym, jak sława i pieniądze mogą destrukcyjnie wpływać na człowieka nieprzygotowanego na taki splendor. Zdecydowanie warto przeczytać.

2021 is begonnen. Een nieuw jaar. De Kerstperiode wordt in de media traditioneel aangegrepen om overleden helden te eren. Hoewel 2020 in veel opzichten geen prettig jaar was, moet ik zeggen dat er opvallend weinig muzikale grootheden zijn gestorven. Deels komt dat natuurlijk, doordat ons de afgelopen jaren al heel veel binnen- en buitenlandse topartiesten zijn ontvallen, maar dan nog. Ook waren er gelukkig weinig van mijn sporthelden die in 2020 zijn gestorven. Heel lang leek het er zelfs op dat 2020 in dit opzicht min of meer geruisloos aan me voorbijging. Tot 25 november. Toen stierf de allergrootste allertijden. Aan mijn muur hing vroeger geen poster van Gullit of Van Basten, nee daar hing een A5-karton met Diego Armando Maradona in actie. In het tenue van Argentinië. Ik heb deze foto altijd bewaard, hoewel ik nu wel even flink zou moeten zoeken waar hij is.
Maradona is voor mij nooit van zijn voetstuk gevallen. De voetballer en de mens (zelfs de trainer) zijn kennelijk twee gescheiden werelden. Ik vind dit eigenlijk wel vreemd. Kennelijk ben ik bereid om heel veel van iemand te slikken als iemand eenmaal op een sokkel staat. Gelukkig heb ik niet zo heel erg veel van dit soort helden. Anders kwam ik met mijn moraal in de knoei vrees ik. Misschien is het zelfs wel zo dat iemand eerst een scherp randje moet hebben voor ik bereid ben diegene te eren. Nou ja, met de jaren is eren eigenlijk een veel te zwaar woord geworden. Dat past een jongen meer. Laten we het houden op bewonderen.
Maar toen kwam dus die 25e november. Koude rillingen. Maradona is niet meer. Diego Armando Maradona is niet meer. Op TV krijgt zijn dood absoluut niet de aandacht die hij verdiende. Dat was me nog niet eens zo heel erg opgevallen, maar de podcast van Hard Gras wees me hierop. Ja, we zijn er te makkelijk overheen gestapt. Corona beheerst ons leven en dus ook het nieuws zo volkomen. En DWDD is niet meer, want dat programma had Maradona anders ongetwijfeld een passend eerbetoon gegeven. Toen Maradona stierf zaten wij een paar dagen in een vakantiehuisje. Overdag werkte ik thuis in het stof van de nieuwe badkamer; ’s avonds nam ik De Hand Van God mee om het te herlezen. Ik weet nog dat ik het ooit voor fl. 1,50 uit de uitverkoopbak heb geplukt, ergens eind jaren negentig. Het boek eindigt ook in die periode, wat jammer is omdat er nog zoveel te vertellen is na Maradona’s actieve carrière en schorsing. Maar wat ook niet erg is, omdat Maradona vooral groots was als voetballer (hoewel ook met de nodige vlekjes, dat mag bekend worden verondersteld) en daarna ook maar een mens bleek.
Vorige week kregen we bezoek. Mijn lieve vriendin A. kwam langs en we kregen het over de Maradona biografie die op de vensterbank lag. Zij kon zich niet voorstellen dat dit een interessant verhaal kon zijn. Te veel bewieroking. Ik trachtte haar uit te leggen dat Maradona groter is dan de mens en dat dat het verhaal ook zo interessant maakte. Zijn levensverhaal wordt ingekleurd door een aantal breekmomenten in de wereldgeschiedenis. De Hand van God is alleen maar zo belangrijk geworden door de Falklandoorlog, het belang van het kampioenschap van Napoli kan alleen worden begrepen tegen de achtergrond van de achtergesteldheid van het zuiden van Italië. Het wereldkampioenschap van 1978 was gekleurd door het Videla-regime, maar in 1986 en de daaropvolgende WK’s werd het team evenzeer ingezet voor propaganda, maar nu van nieuwe leiders als Menem. Maradona was wereldnieuws, hij was er onderdeel van en hij werd als marionet gebruikt door politici, clubbazen en gomorra om geschiedenis te maken. Argentinië en de Argentijnen zijn echt veranderd door Maradona, net zoals de Napolitanen. Daarmee was Maradona veel groter dan de voetballer of zelfs de mens. Dat maakt het lezen van dit boek absoluut de moeite (en als je niet van lezen houdt, kijk dan de documentaire van vorig jaar). Argentinië zal nog wel even in rouw zijn. Ik ben het nu kwijt.

Vorige week kregen we bezoek. Mijn lieve vriendin A. kwam langs en we kregen het over de Maradona biografie die op de vensterbank lag. Zij kon zich niet voorstellen dat dit een interessant verhaal kon zijn. Te veel bewieroking. Ik trachtte haar uit te leggen dat Maradona groter is dan de mens en dat dat het verhaal ook zo interessant maakte. Zijn levensverhaal wordt ingekleurd door een aantal breekmomenten in de wereldgeschiedenis. De Hand van God is alleen maar zo belangrijk geworden door de Falklandoorlog, het belang van het kampioenschap van Napoli kan alleen worden begrepen tegen de achtergrond van de achtergesteldheid van het zuiden van Italië. Het wereldkampioenschap van 1978 was gekleurd door het Videla-regime, maar in 1986 en de daaropvolgende WK’s werd het team evenzeer ingezet voor propaganda, maar nu van nieuwe leiders als Menem. Maradona was wereldnieuws, hij was er onderdeel van en hij werd als marionet gebruikt door politici, clubbazen en gomorra om geschiedenis te maken. Argentinië en de Argentijnen zijn echt veranderd door Maradona, net zoals de Napolitanen. Daarmee was Maradona veel groter dan de voetballer of zelfs de mens. Dat maakt het lezen van dit boek absoluut de moeite (en als je niet van lezen houdt, kijk dan de documentaire van vorig jaar). Argentinië zal nog wel even in rouw zijn. Ik ben het nu kwijt.

Diego Maradona on üks suurimaid jalgpallilegende. Maradona on midagi enamat kui lihtsalt jalgpallur. Oma tormilise karjääri jooksul mängis ta Lõuna-Ameerikas ja Euroopas, kus temast sai jumaldatud kangelane. Kogu maailm mäletab tema 1986.a MM veerandfinaalis “jumala käega” löödud väravat. Ta oli vastuoluline ja keeruline inimene, Argentiina ebajumal.

Ühtlasi üllatas mind see, kui karm oli tolleaegne jalgpall ja kui tõsiseid vigastusi mängijad üksteisele tekitasid. Praegu ei kujutaks sellist asja ettegi.

Барнс на мене насцяв, так Марадона прокоментував цю книгу (ту частину, не доповнену).
Неавторизована, тобто не погодження героєм біографія. Як на мене, одна з кращих, яку я читав. Без прикрас, без непотрібного піару, про великого футболіста, про пошуки месії аргентинцями, про те, що відбувається коли людина лізе туди, де не розуміється, про чоловіка, який ніколи толком не подорослішав, в житті наробив багато-багато помилок.
Рекомендую читати саме доповнену версію.
Неавторизована, тобто не погодження героєм біографія. Як на мене, одна з кращих, яку я читав. Jest to lepsza książka od ,, Barca. Życie,pasja,ludzie". Niemniej jednak nie mogę się przekonać do Burnsa. Za mało w jego książkach jest o sporcie.

Jimmy Burnsin "Maradona - maailman paras jalkapalloilija?" (Minerva, 2014) on epävirallinen ja sävyltään melko kriittinen elämäkerta argentiinalaisesta jalkapallosuuruudesta, jonka pelikentällä esittämää neroutta ovat varjostaneet huume- ja dopingkohut, taloudelliset sotkut ja epämääräiset veljeilyt järjestäytyneen rikollisuuden kanssa.
Vaikka inhoan siloiteltuja ja kohdettaan ylistäviä elämäkertoja, niin tässä tapauksessa englantilaistoimittaja olisi voinut kertoa enemmän saavutuksista urheilukentillä kuin skandaaleista, etenkin kun kirja ei pysty täyspainoisesti vastaamaan esittämäänsä haasteeseen kuvata Maradonaa "ainutlaatuisena sosiaalisena, poliittisena ja uskonnollisena kohteena."
Jotakin uutta opin kuitenkin Maradonasta. Englantilaisen jalkapallon ystävänä on kiehtovaa ajatella, miten olisi mahtanut käydä, mikäli Harry Haslam olisi onnistunut hankkimaan pelaajan Sheffield Unitediin 1970-luvun loppupuolella...

If 3 stars is "I liked it", I rate this book 3½ stars.
This unauthorized biography is brimming with inside stories hitherto unknown to me as well as factual errors, typos and misnomers (a typo happens only once, but when the same name is mispelt every time it appears then it’s probably the result of sloppy research, copy editing or proofreading).
Then, the author -a Spanish-born Englishman- makes the mistake of letting some anti-Argentine prejudice show though a couple of times (i.e. “The concept of male fidelity did not form part of Argentine culture…” –Really, Jimmy? Not a gross generalization, especially coming from a subject of the House of Windsor?).
Also, a strictly linear and chronological storytelling would have been easier to follow. Unfortunately, in the final part of the book the author chooses to jump forwards and backwards in the timeline. If one adds to this the fact that Maradona’s adult life was a pendulum between drugs-and-alcohol and rehabbed sobriety, and between athletic fitness and a body the size and shape of a sofa, the story becomes confusing. We don't know if we are reading about fat Diego when or reformed Diego after what.
All in all it’s an entertaining book even if it has too much analysis and too many conclusions drawn without having sat down for a five-minute interview with the protagonist.
Believe what you will but don’t take it as an authoritative biography.

It's always interesting to read an unauthorised biography, without the rose tinted spectacles approach, and especially about compelling, exceptional characters.
This ticks all those boxes and comes with the added bonus of veiled (and unveiled) threats against the author and anyone willing to speak to him.
Maradona is one of those real Jekyll and Hyde characters, quite literally given his penchant for violence and shooting journalists with airguns, yet not forgetting his family roots and background.
This is a compelling tale of rags to riches, built on a genuine talent, but with an unhappy outcome for most of the cast of characters.
On one hand you can distill the magic he created, but it is hard to ignore the background of self indulgence and destruction which ultimately proved to be more news worthy than any hair raising moment of football.

A very good biography of the little big man himself. Like any proper sport book (I haven't read Ashley Cole's Autobiography but I can only assume it has similar literary aspirations) it takes in the wider cultural and political society around its subject matter and this book left me wanting to learn more about that period of Argentina's history. But it is also a Sex and Drugs and Rock n' Roll story with plenty of lurid tales and gossip. If Peter Biskand wrote sport biographies I guess they would be a little like this.

En lainkaan kummastele miksi Maradona tykkäsi aikoinaan huonoa Jimmy Burnsin kirjoittamasta jalkapalloilijan elämänkerrasta. Sivuilla pöyhitään paljon enemmän Maradonan epäonnistumisia, kuin onnistumisia. Mielestäni kirja ohitti kriittisyydessään hyvän maun rajat. Itseäni olisi kiinnostanut lukea enemmän aiheesta millainen Maradona oli pelaajana, kuinka hän treenasi ja miksi Maradona on niin Suuri. Teksti on poukoilevaa ja vaikutti kuin kirjailijaa ei olisi edes kiinnostanut viimeistellä kirjaa loppuun saakka.

Unlike Maradooona Himself, this book is dull, flat and pedestrian. Lacking any real insight into the tortured psyche of the football demi-god (and this is an unauthorised biography), the book is basically a cut-and-paste run-through of the well-known events of Diego's life up to his fall from grace in the mid-90s. Jimmy Burns' book on Barcelona FC is a much better work, and he doesn't talk about himself in that one much either (unlike here).

Taas yksi autorisoimaton elämäkerta, jonka aluksi kirjailija kirjoittaa liian pitkän minä-minä-monologin suhteesta kohteeseen ja selittää miksi lupaa yhteistyöhön ei herunut. Sen jälkeen kuitenkin ihan jäntevä ja mielenkiintoisesti kerrottu tarina jalkapallon kauhukakarasta, joka oli teknisesti niin ihmeellinen mutta ihmisenä niin heikko.

Jimmy Burns’s Hand of God: The Life of Diego Maradona, Soccer’s Fallen Star, is, to my mind, one of the most compelling biographies of a sportsman ever written—not simply because it chronicles a career but because it grapples with the strange alchemy of genius and self-destruction.
The book begins, as all Maradona stories must, in Villa Fiorito, the slum outside Buenos Aires where Diego was born in 1960. Burns, a journalist of Anglo-Spanish descent, does not waste words in sentimentality. Czy interesuje was życie piłkarzy? Czy jesteście fanami piłki nożnej? Zainteresował i zaintrygował mnie bardzo tytuł tej powieści „Maradona. Ręka Boga”. Postanowiłam przeczytać tą książkę.
Autor Jimmy Burns nie owija w bawełnę. Mogła lepiej poznać życie znanego piłkarza Diego Maradony. A w sumie jego ostatnie 10 lat życia.. Jakim był naprawdę człowiekiem? Nie stronił od używek. Brał narkotyki. Jadł do upadłego. Uwierzycie, że potrafił zjeść kilka tortów i pizz w ciągu jednego posiedzenia. Dla mnie to był szok.
Poznajcie jego wzloty i upadki widziane oczyma autora i znajomych Diego Maradony. Co tak naprawdę wiem o jego życiu? Tak naprawdę to bardzo niewiele. Po przeczytaniu tej książki opadła mi szczęka. Warto czasami oderwać się od swojego ulubionego gatunku i przeczytać biografię znanych ludzi.
Czy sława może uderzyć do głowy? Pewnie. Niestety ma to skutek nie tylko dla danej osoby ale również dla całej rodziny.

Jeśli jesteś fanem Maradony to nie czytaj tej książki. Jeśli uważałeś, że Maradona był najlepszym piłkarzem w historii to nie czytaj tej książki. Tak powinno się pisać biografie! Bez niepotrzebnego patosu, bez pomnikowych laurek, bez chowania pod dywan syfu, który może komuś zaszkodzić. Plus dla autora za tę bezkompromisowość. Życie Diego pokazało jak można rozmienić się na drobne, jak niesłusznie świat (spora jego cześć) widzi w nim najlepszego piłkarza w historii. Był nim tylko przez chwilę (Mundial 86), przez resztę kariery bywał genialny, wyśmienity ale tytuł najlepszego przyznano mu mocno na wyrost.
Piękne jest jedno zdanie w tej książce, które idealnie nadaje się na myśl przewodnią: „Nie ważne co zrobiłeś ze swoim życiem, ważne co zrobiłeś z naszym”. Myślę, że każdy kibic piłki nożnej może się pod tym podpisać.

Despised this book, which earns many superlatives, including the worst biography I have ever read. I have never read a book in which the author so despises his subject. Why would Jimmy Burns bother to write a biography about a man he so clearly hates? It is hilarious, in a way, how wide of the mark Jimmy Burns goes. This isn't a biography, it is a tabulation of Diego Maradona's many faults and a history of his mistakes and misdeeds. Pass by this book if you are seeking a celebration of Maradona's footballing abilities or a description of any match in which the soccer star plays, except for the semifinal of the 1986 World Cup between Argentina and England. This is not a chronicle of a legendary footballing life or an exploration of why and how he misspent his talent — it's a book-length character assassination, and even worse than that, it is profoundly boring.

Zaczęłam, gdyż-ponieważ na wakacjach przeczytałam wszystkie zabrane książki (tak, jestem nieuleczalnym wyznawcą papierowych książek 🤷♀️) i została mi do dyspozycji tylko książka starego 😂 Wciągnęła mnie! Piłka nożna nie jest mi obca (nawet piszę to w przerwie meczu, który oglądam), ale nie czytam biografii zawodników. Ta była pierwsza. Ukazuje świat footbalu (ze wszystkimi jego aspektami), pokazuje upadek człowieka uznanego za geniusza w swojej dziedzinie, autor próbuje znaleźć odpowiedzi na pytanie dlaczego tak się stało. Ciekawa, pełna tła (Buenos Aires, Neapol, narkotyki, camorra).

A fascinating read about the rise and fall of Diego Maradona, one of the greatest soccer players ever. The author, a British journalist who spent a number of years as a foreign desk reporter in Maradona's native Argentina, did a good job of explaining outside factors in Maradona's life, as well as reasons for his downfall. I would have like to have seen a better labelling of the chronology of his life (e.g. "At the end of 32..."), as well as more attention on Maradona's leading Napoli to its two Serie A championships in 1987 and 1990.

Това, което ме грабва в биографиите, е описанието на личността, поведенческите модели на човека и причините за неговитв решение. Тук не видях подобни описания- научих много малко за личността Марадона. Книгата беше фокусирана повече върху критиката му. Той е противоречива личност, но някак си след печрочитането у мен остава една неяснота що за човек е бил той.
