The odious, bloodthirsty, cranky Lord and Lady Gristle-Wart are all round stinkers by anyone’s standards. Forget hunting and shooting - they like nothing better than killing and maiming any innocent creature that has the misfortune to get in their way. No one can stop them. However, despite their best efforts, one particular animal absolutely refuses to take this lying down. A certain fox, of a certain colour…Sophie has always loved animals. As such she has been looking forward to her class’ annual trip to a nearby farm… until she gets inadvertently sucked into a 300 year old blood feud between the gruesome Gristle-Warts and the perennial thorn in their side, the fearless, swashbuckling, adventurous, proud and defiant Fred the Red. When this turns into an insurrection to regain control of the countryside, Sophie must decide what it means to stand up for what you believe and how far she is willing to go for those beliefs... For fans of David Walliams, Cressida Cowell and the incomparable Roald Dahl, this funny, touching, heart-warming, feel good foray into the absurdities that happen when the grown up world and kid world collide is a middle grade must-read for any reader aged between 8 and 13.
This kid’s book was a fun story to read. It had lots of disgusting and funny characters whilst at the centre of it was a story about a young girl helping to protect a fox and other animals from hunters. It was told in a very entertaining way with a lot of humour and imagination.
The book felt like a bit of a story of two halves. The story of the girl, Sophie, and the fox, Fred the Red, was a traditional sort of heart-warming story of a young girl and a fox protecting and saving animals, all very sweet and predictable. The other half of the story was the Lord and Lady of the manner and their hunting party, they are a hilarious series of grotesque and horrible characters, the very worst you can imagine. The two stories manage to blend pretty well together; although the story is fairly predictable, the horrible human characters add a different style and depth from usual kids’ stories.
I think this book would benefit from professional editing, however I would recommend it as a fun and enjoyable read for kids and adults. You can watch my review of this book here: https://youtu.be/cOM0A0Wm56g
