At the age of 29, some might call Rose Collins a bible-thumping, skinny old maid. When Rose’s papa dies, his last will and testament forces her to make a dangerous cross-country journey on horseback. If she does not, she forfeits the entire estate, including the Collins ranch.
Charlie Taylor is seen by most as a cutthroat drifter. His commanding officer during the war was Rose’s papa. As an experienced Army scout, Charlie has skills and talents needed for a very special task; one he feels obliged to undertake.
The last wish of Colonel Collins was that Charlie escort his daughter Rose on her perilous, 1,000 mile-long journey from Santa Fe to San Francisco. Unfortunately, barren deserts and rugged mountain ranges are also where very bad men go to hide.
Books in the Bullets and Doves series can be read as standalone novels, in any order.
This is a western tale that requires a former Union Army scout to guide the daughter of his former commanding officer from Santa Fe to San Francisco. They must travel overland and complete the trip in one month. These are stipulations from the father’s will that will allow his daughter to inherit his ranch in Santa Fe. An added complication is that the daughter and the guide have never met each other before. One final twist, the daughter is going to San Francisco to meet for the first time the man her father wants her to marry. That is another requirement in the father’s last will and testament. The traveling pair will face many physical and environmental hazards going to San Francisco. They will confront many more hazards from people they meet on the journey. So, there is much danger and action in the storyline. However, there is nothing to really distinguish these western characters from other tales of the old west. Plus, the dialogue is rather routine and mundane. There is just nothing that makes this western tale standout from other stories in the western genre.
This is a unique tale of a lonely recently orphaned young woman being forced to travel with a young half Navajo man as her guide on the trail to California for a prearranged wedding. She did not know her intended groom and he did not know her either. None of them knew the guide. They have all sorts of adventures and troubles on the trail and nearly get murdered several times but finally reach their destination. You will enjoy the surprise ending to this tale.
I truly enjoyed this romantic Western. It had some great fast paced action, and a interesting interactions with the wealthy young ranch lady, and her handsome, part Navaho guide. Great adventure, and beautiful descriptions of natures wonders. I highly recommend this Western, it’s a real page turner.
Most excellent! Interesting from start to finish! Great job!
Really good book. Excellent story line and great characters. I do get tired of the kidnapping thing. Didn't need it. I especially enjoyed the part with the Navajo Indians.
I couldn't put it down! From first page to ending it held my interest. It was very believe able in all of the incidents in the1870s. Really enjoyed this well written book.
The idea of marrying a total stranger is not a great idea , but father knows best. Sometimes listening to your father is a good thing. This is a fantastic read. Please give G.C Riley a chance. You won't regret it.
Must have made reference to god and religion over a half dozen times in the first several pages. The story plodded on, appeared weak and I did not finish.
Who ever reads this book will love the love story of Charlie and Rosie. Its got the wild west and a Gone with the Wind love story wrapped neatly in ine book!
