Night Warrior

Rate this book
When a bolt of lightning strikes seventeen-year-old Viranda’s home during a severe thunderstorm, she awakens, dazed, to find a strange blood-covered man sitting calmly on her bed. This man claims to be Cillian Balor, The Night Warrior, the same character Viranda herself had created in her novel. Cillian believes Viranda to be the Goddess of Fate from his homeworld of Lingard. However, Viranda claims there is no Goddess of Fate in Lingard; she should know, she did create it after all. When other characters from her book begin to appear in her world, Viranda fears what would happen if the likes of Finn Razorclaw, a deadly werewolf and the arch-rival of Cillian, or the feared witches of The Black Cat Clan arrived as well. With the help of her best friend Bee, and a protection gnome named Mo, Viranda and Cillian must discover the secret to Cillian’s existence and prevent catastrophic damage by powerful supernatural beings.

I think that every author dreams of what would happen if their characters came to life. If the creations of their mind, the depictions of themselves, were to appear in real life. For the main character in Jordan J. Scavone’s Night Warrior, this actually happens. And it’s nothing like what she anticipated.

1. Thoughts on the plot
I really enjoyed seeing this twist on the typical YA portal fantasy, where instead of being pulled into a magical world, the characters of Viranda’s fantasy novel are pulled into our world. This presents a whole slew of very interesting possibilities: technological difficulties, interacting with “normal” people, what happens when magic appears, etc. I think the plot was fairly good in combining the events of the magical world of Lingard with the reality of Earth. Each situation was of a higher degree of danger and drama and the characters had to learn to face it accordingly. I would say that a lot of the worldbuilding was a bit info-dumpy, since we learned of the situations through doors in Viranda’s mind being opened and revealing lots of information at once.

2. Thoughts on the main character
Viranda is an interesting main character, given what one usually sees as the stereotype in YA novels featuring a female lead. Instead of the pretty and perfect magical warrior who just doesn’t know it yet, Viranda is flawed. She injures herself at the beginning of the novel and that stays with her. She is uncertain and deals with normal emotions like jealousy and fear and selfishness. But she also is a good friend, determined to help solve the problems, and willing to do what it takes. I like her, basically. I think it would have been nice to see a bit more development in her actions and interactions with others rather than being informed of what it was that was happening with her, but on the whole I like her.

3. Favourite part
This isn’t really a specific scene, but rather the fact that when Viranda injures herself at the beginning of the book, the injury takes time to heal. It doesn’t magically go away. It stays with her throughout the book and becomes another challenge to overcome. I like it when things like this are consistent throughout a story, because I’ve seen too many books where a character gets injured and then ignores it until all the action is done. It made this more real.

4. Critique
My main critique is to do with the worldbuilding. Viranda learns about the situations with her characters and the world of Lingard by means of doors in her mind opening and revealing information. This could be done to very cool effect, and is, for the most part. However, there are some parts near the end of the book where Viranda seeks information and things that have not been hinted at or mentioned at all throughout the book appear to flesh out a character or to provide a solution to the problems that have been plaguing them the whole book. It feels a little like a McGuffin and throws a solution at us without really having an impact on the characters or the plot that we’ve seen thus far.

Overall, I would say that Night Warrior is a fun book that twists the typical YA portal fantasy into something new and entertaining. The plot is interesting and there is enough going on to keep you engaged. I would say that this is a solidly good book.

I would give this book six stars if I could. The Night Warrior is a YA urban fantasy that pulls the reader in and doesn’t let go. Jordan has a way of making the story feel familiar and unique all at once. At times it felt like I was reading about characters from a long-forgotten fairytale I hadn’t thought about since childhood. It felt familiar and comforting while the story had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. The character relationships were done amazingly well, and I loved the arcs all the characters went on. I listened to the audio book version of the book the narrator did such an incredible job of brining the characters to life and holding the reader’s attention through the whole book. I highly recommend this book.

The cover made the story sound interesting for sure. Fantasy is a genre that has caught my eye, and it was worth the read. What a worthy choice of having a female protagonist! I Will not say much more because I do not want to spoil what I have read. If you are a fan of fantasy...this is the book to read!

This story was awesome! The action never stopped as the author weaved worlds together effortlessly and descriptive. It had familiar references, feels to the genre, but had a blend of unique flavors that set it apart. I would definitely recommend this for middle school ages and up, even as an adult I enjoyed it and would be very happy to read more about this cast of characters.

Preface: Night Warrior by Jordan J. Scavone is a fun reverse isekai, YA story. Despite very minor issues, I highly recommend reading this series if you are a fan of YA, Light novels or just are up for some fun. I would give this story 4.5 stars, however since I do not have that option, I decided to round up to 5 stars.

Introduction: Night Warriors is a story by Jorda J. Scavone, it involves a teenage, main character of Viranda, an aspiring writer who has her life changed after some certain events, with characters from the world of her book coming to her world, as the world changes around her rapidly.

Overall, it is well written. Throughout my read I have found only one typo, and to be completely honest it could be not one, I have contacted the author and will await a response about that, but all in all, it is well written and clear, although there were very few instances where I was a little confused with who said some dialogs.

In terms of story, I have enjoyed the flow of the story, some of the changes and twists were enjoyable, and unexpected initially until you think about them, which is what makes a good twist. I would say some parts near the ending were a bit too fast for myself, but that is just a personal preference of sort. It has many times reminded of Light Novels, which I also enjoy.

Also, despite showing promise for a series, the book is very self contained, giving a conclusion that has tied almost all threads and questions, satisfyingly.

Characters were well done, acting genuinely like their ages and somehow how I expect such characters to act, and they could be annoying at times. However, that all makes sense narration wise, as teenagers act like teenagers would. Who would've known? Which is something I appreciate, I like the 17 years old to act like a 17 years old, not like a 43 years old war veteran.

Despite all of this, and the books first chapter or two being relatively slow, as soon as the chapters rolled on I found myself glued to the book, finishing it pretty quickly.

Conclusion: I highly recommend this story if you enjoy YA, Light novels, or are just looking for something fun to read.

Night Warrior is a rather interesting reverse portal fantasy, meaning that the mystical beings come to our world rather than vice versa. The protagonist--17-year-old Viranda--injures herself in a fall and during her recovery, becomes embroiled in plots by knights, werewolves, witches, and demi-gods entering our world, all with their own agenda.

The main character, Viranda, is generally sympathetic and easy to like. I'm not sure the remaining cast got enough development for my taste but in service to the plot, what was there was sufficient. The antagonists have a certain snarly appeal and especially towards the end, come off as rather menacing. The plot moves at a rapid pace from main event to main event and never felt like there were extended sessions where nothing significant happened.

The world-building came in flashes of memory to Viranda, or through extended monologues from other characters, and it sometimes felt a little info-dumpy. Action scenes, while generally clear and easy to follow/visualize, tended to go on for quite a while. And I would have loved to see more of the blood magic; it's such a neat concept.

But these are relatively minor issues. I'd definitely recommend this to a YA reader, who I think would identify and empathize with the protagonist. It's a pretty clean book, suitable for a younger audience, and touches on some issues and angst late-teens feel on a lot of subjects.

Night Warriors was a pleasant and fast reverse portal fantasy read, where characters from a fantasy world enter ours. The protagonist was Viranda, a 17 year old girl from earth, putting this cleanly in the YA fantasy adventure genre. With witches, warewolves, goddesses, and holy warriors, it has all the hallmarks of classic fantasy, with some interesting twists to the standard tropes. I enjoyed the mystery aspect as Viranda discovers who and what she is, and very much liked Leona's character! My only gripes were that the plot fel ta little rushed, with some twists being nicely set up and others coming a bit out of nowhere, such as the romantic feelings the protagonist develops for another character. These are fairly minor issues, though. I read it over the course of a single day, so it definitly kept my attention. I also enjoyed the fact that it is a self-contained story. While there is a hook for a sequel, I'm not screaming at a cliffhanger--always a relief. Good, solid debut into the fantasy market!

I enjoyed this book. Veranda was a good character. I like that the fantasy characters got pulled into the real world. That was a nice twist. Overall rating eight out of 10.

This was a great transition book for Scavone! I know he’s done well with children’s books and this was a good first YA story. It is action packed and a non-stop pace. It has many of the YA tropes embedded in it. It has a strong, yet believable teenage female lead that plays well with the story. The story is bursting with fantasy-from gnomes, to witches, to werewolves, to gods and demi-gods, to holy knights in armor. I think young fantasy readers would enjoy this book. If Jordan can fix a few writing errors, like seperating action and dialogue, I think this one would be a 3.75 to 4 star for YA readers.

I was curious to read Jordan J. Scavone’s Young Adult Urban Fantasy, Night Warrior. This author has also written several books for much younger readers, which I’ve also read, so I was curious to see how his imagination would evolve into a longer, speculative work for older audiences. I was not disappointed.

I was immediately drawn in when I discovered that the main character was female. Gender opposite writing is a technique I’m pleased to see more writers utilizing. Imagination excels when authors step outside of their normal touchstones and investigate character emotions and thoughts in this way. Mr. Scavone’s ability to become his main character as he told us this story was fluid and believable.

The magical elements were also intriguing. Artifacts of both good and evil drove suspension of disbelief, bringing new layers of power to the factions that wielded them. The environments Jordan designed were also quite interesting. Three very different worlds; one physical, one we only know by inference, and the last embedded deep in imagination. These worlds compare and contrast with such vitality that it’s easy to imagine traveling between them. My favorite locale, not surprising to anyone who knows me, was the bookshop. I always get sucked into a story the minute a bookshop or library is mentioned. Extra points to Mr. Scavone for feeding my greatest love inside his story.

Most memorable, however, was the technique of bringing us a terrific puzzle through a complex narration sequence. This book is written primarily in first person, from the main character, with multiple assists from other strong characters who often vie for the reader’s attention. The fantasy comes to life as we are invited to live directly in the experience of being a fledgling author, with all its gifts, quirks, and curses. The parallels to real-life writer’s block and the frustrations of knowing - and not knowing - what might come next in a book one is writing makes this a story perfect for anyone who writes, no matter their age or process.

This is high fantasy, presented in an urban setting, and meets all the criteria to fit the genre. There are magical artifacts, special potions and spells, a hierarchy of power, sacred societies, and exotic beasts. Also true to the genre, there are plenty of battles, and a few were fairly intense. Mr. Scavone has done his research on stage combat, as each fight was step-by-step visually believable.

My only critique for this book is that I would have preferred more emphasis on the backstory and the emotional and intellectual “emergence” of the main character rather than the many moments of combat. I’m far more interested in the psychological elements of a struggle than the physical… and I recognize that I am in the minority among Young Adult Fantasy readers.

The ending left me wondering if this book may be the first in a series. If it is, I will watch for the next book, and read it, too. I would also be interested in reading a prequel… should such a thing ever come into being. Thank you, Jordan, for a fun romp through a writer’s imagination.

I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a phenomenal job! This book was entertaining from start to finish.

This book is a YA portal fantasy about a girl named Viranda who's life takes a crazy turn after a climbing accident in a mine in Hawaii. After having her elbow reconstructed, one of her only hobbies left is writing. Once night she gets an urge to start writing a new story, but this is no ordinary writing session. She becomes entranced and sits writing for six hours straight, not stopping until she literally passes out. When he wakes up, a bolt of lightning has hit her house, striking her computer. A man named Cillian Balor, The Night Warrior from the book she had written, is standing in her bedroom. He is NOT happy to be there! Viranda and Cillian quickly realize that he is not the only person from his world that has been transported into hers, and there are some VERY bad people coming after them. Very bad people who also practice dark magic.

Cillian also tells her that she is falsely named after Viranda, the goddess of fate in his world, a fact that she argues because she did not write in a goddess of fate in her story.

As this story unfolds, we get long action sequences between the good guys and the bad guys, which I loved! There is magic, witches, fairies, a protection gnome, other magic creatures, a cursed prince. Viranda (who is only 17) ends up with a crush on Cillian but the woman she wrote in the story to be his love is also there, so she becomes jealous of a relationship that she created. In the end there is a fight with a plot twist, and we finally learn Viranda's connection to the goddess of their world.

I thought this was a great YA fantasy audiobook! It actually reminded me a lot of Shadow Dance by CK Andersson, except written for a younger audience. Great job to this author and the narrator!

Night Warrior - Jordan J Scavone

Firstly, a huge thankyou to the author for reaching out and giving me this amazing opportunity to listen to the night terror.

What a beginning so you learn about Veranda and Bea’s relationship, it’s so unexpected to get so much gore at the beginning. I cringed and shuddered at the accident that happens. I found it so interesting how the story started to unfold. I could feel the anticipation build as everything that started to happen to Veranda began.

There was such a variety of different characters from a prince to knights to fairies to gnomes to witches and so much more. Can I just say how much I love the name ‘emberleigh’. I found myself enlightened by the two different worlds.

There’s so much to this audio/book/read the relationships that creep out of the darkness are so unexpected. How the story itself is written and what is reality and the truth. How the characters relationships are connected and so much more. It’s not all evil there’s that perfect balance of good and evil. I wasn’t ready for the ending at all. I hope there will be a follow up book 2.

I found it extremely fast paced and easy to follow. I hated pausing it when I got home or got to work. This is an exceptional fantasy that builds on the emotions of relationships so much. Every part of this just grips you, the action is fantastic. The imagination is outstanding. A fun creative brilliant read/audio that I adored listening to.

Imagine your favorite book characters come to life. Now imagine you put them there and you’re in charge of their fate. Night warrior is action packed and feels like a superhero comic or graphic novel without pictures. It brought to mind so many other legendary stories, including Lord of the Rings, Thor, Stardust, and Going Bovine. At times, I will admit I had a little trouble keeping up with the world of Lingard, almost wishing there was a pocket guide or perhaps even a prequel. But since I listened to it on audio, that’s to be expected. The audio, by the way, is worth a listen. The speaker makes each character distinct and is easy to listen to. Ultimately, each time I got in the car, I couldn’t wait to get back to these characters and their story, which is the sign of a good book. I did question whether Viranda was indeed controlling the story, as the writer, and if so, why couldn’t she just fix everything? All is revealed in time. It’s worth going along for the journey!

A fun refreshing fantasy for Scavone's YA debut!
Viranda decides to pen a new story after an injury leaves her limited physical options. However, Viranda's characters literally leap off the page when one stormy night her novel's hero is chilling in her room. What's more alarming is he brings the werewolf Finn Razorclaw and his thirst for vengeance as well as his allies the Black Cat Clan. Viranda and Cillian must both adapt to the changing world/rules to stop the bad guys in a classic good vs. evil story laden with magic.

Highly recommend for readers who love a good fantasy! This was so refreshing and original, with a steady paced plot and decent world-building that quickly throws readers into the adventure. A unique story that kept me engaged cover to cover. cannot recommend this one enough!

I should point out how if this book has a target audience I’m not in it but as a guy in my 30’s I do think a good story can transcend such things and Night Warrior does that.
Doubtless in order to keep later twists the books has something of a slow and is kind of formulaic teen girl stuff (although it is nice to see creatures pulled into our world rather than the teenage girl finding herself in a fantasy kingdom). But once the story got its hooks into me I couldn’t put it down. Seriously the twists are great, it’s packed with really well told action.

I’m a sucker for world building i love a rich fantasy land and there are a lot of moving parts and things to remember here. With every major revelation comes new twists and turns that almost makes this feel like the extremely meta spinoff book to a more traditional swords and sorcery type affair.

This book’s plot immeadiatly hooked me. After reading the description I knew I had to read it. A young author’s characters suddenly appear in her real life, and no one has any clue why or how? Sign me up. I would say I wish that would happen to me but then I’d have a ton of meerkats running about my house and I hardly think my pets would appricate that. Besides, it leads to a lot of problems for Viranda, the protagonist, which is of course what makes it so fun for us, the readers.

This story gives readers a spectacular glimpse of what could happen if a fantasy world intermingled with a big city. I won’t give any spoilers, but it causes some trouble. I was gripped by Viranda’s self-doubt from the start. She’s a highly relatable character and an underdog to root for. I was on the edge of my seat and the never-ending surprises of this novel had me baffled (in a good way).

Not a bad book, I overall enjoyed it. i listened to it as an Audiobook. Some of the battle scenes were a bit long winded for my taste. It was a fun premise of the main characters fictional world mixing with her real world. I'll be heading to check out Jordan's other titles for younger kids.
