This was a very enjoyable audiobook. It is part of a series but my enjoyment wasn't hampered even though I haven't read the other books in the series. This is a regency historical romance, taking place at a time when men were either gentlemen or rakes, and reputation was simply everything.
I don't think there is anything particularly astounding about this romance. It has an independent and clever young woman as the main character, Genevieve, who doesn't feel the need for protection from her newly discovered half brothers and wants to be independent.
She finds a way to achieve this when she meets Jonathan Bridges, the owner of a shipping company which may have lost her deceased mother's possessions.
Jonathan is attracted to the bright young lady that he finds sorting out the mess in his office but he is up to his neck in worry because it appears a smuggling ring has been using his shipping business for a cover and now he has to trace missing shipping crates and he needs help.
Jonathan is desperate enough to accept help from Genevieve and her family and so the adventure begins and love emerges along the way especially as the two of them find themselves in a rather compromising position.
The story is enjoyable but it is the narration that really brought things to life for me. A narrator can either bring a book to life by opening it up to the listener or they can kill the story off by smothering it in monotony. This narrator was brilliant in the way she gave voice to the different characters and managed to keep the book within its historical setting.
The way she emphasised various aspects of the story took me back to a time when women were there to grace men's lives and men were supposed to be protectors and providers. I was drawn into the story and really enjoyed listening to this.
I don't think I will read the other books in the series because regency romance is not really a strong favourite of mine but this was such an enjoyable audiobook and fans of this genre would find this audiobook to be delightful.

All Genvieve wants is to find her mother's belongings & her life to go back to the way it was before she found out she had four very protective stepbrothers. The kind of stepbrothers that think a woman's place is in the home. All Jonathan Bridges (brother of Lady Rothsbury whom we met in the Reluctant Rake) wants is to find out what has happened to his missing shipments & the type of wife who stays home & takes care of the household. As they clash over her helping him to organize his files they stumble on a smuggling ring. John & Elizabeth Trent are also on the trail of the smugglers too.
I really enjoyed this book Genvieve & Jonathan were very likeable & the story had intrigue so not the run of the mill romance story
I’ve LOVED this series! Jane Charles was able to give each character their own unique twist & make them all work together. Always love the Duke of Danby connections! Of course I now have to read all the associated books to find out what happened to the other characters mentioned
Just a couple of quibbles with American written stories are in the UK we don’t have blocks but streets & what is a stoop! A few proof reading errors but less than in the other books. These don’t detract from the story, in fact kindle books all seem to have more errors than printed books.
I chuckled at the clever wit, wanted to shake the main characters for their stubbornness and hardheadedness, was kept turning the pages and actually made a sound something like 'aw' when this story came to its end. A good mix of family caring and the tight bonds between brothers and sisters, a budding love between two special characters, some smuggling and a bit of danger all mixed together in some very clever by Jane Charles and a fantastic narration by Melanie Fraser. I particularly loved her French accent. Altogether wonderful entertainment and a delightful story and I highly recommend this book/audiobook.
Narration - Melanie Fraser - Really Good This is all read with a British accent and it's just one of those that you sit back and enjoy. Very melodic and lovely to listen to. I really enjoyed all of her characters.
The story is a fun sort of who-dunnit. Genvieve wants to get her mother's belongings from the shipping company in London, but isn't getting the timely response that she hopes for so she ends up in the owners office. Finding it a mess of piles of papers, she takes it upon herself to start organizing. As soon as Genvieve meets Jonathon you can tell they are going to do a little head butting. Jonathan isn't exactly sure where her stuff is, or where a lot of peoples things are for that matter and he ends up eliciting Genvieve's help to set things back in order. Genvieve wants to be an independent woman, but it's unseemly for a lady to run about and do the things that she (wants to do) and does.
This is not a story of rollercoastering emotions, or filled with angst. There's a little slice of danger thrown into the plot, but for the most part, it's just an enjoyable pretty clean romance. A relaxing and enjoyable listen when you need an emotional break.

This was my first read of one of Jane Charles' books, and I enjoyed it. I liked the characters, pacing and overall story. There were a few funny moments also. I admit I was confused at times. I thought I had book 1 in the series but, after looking further, realized it is a later book. I could not figure out the main character's accent. I listened to the audio and though the name sounded French, I wasn't sure about the accent. But, I didn't find until later in the story that she had either lived for a while or grew up in France. But, despite that was a nice, light read. I would recommend starting from the beginning of the series, though you wouldn't be overly lost or confused if you didn't. It definitely was a series I plan to read. The narrator did a nice job. She had all of the inflexion, feeling and nuances for the characters. At times her speech was a bit quick, but overall, a very pleasant read/listen.
I have enjoyed this series so much - it is almost sad that this is the last book.
I really liked Jonathan and Genevieve. They are both strong, opinionated characters and it was fun watching them fall in love.
My only complaints are: one - there was no epilogue - having read this series since beginning, I feel like I know these characters and would have liked a glimpse of their HEAs - especially after the family secret is disclosed. And two : I would have liked a bit more steam - but that's just me :)
This book was excellent and I highly recommend the entire series! Maybe (fingers crossed ) this was not the end of the series. Maybe Rose will get her own love story (hint, hint)

I enjoyed this book. The story of Jonanthan and Geneveieve proved to be fun and exciting as the story unfolds. Looking for her mother's things, Geneveieve stumbles on a mess she just has to clean up. Jonathan just wants her to go away while he seaches out where his shipments are going. What do they get? A smuggling ring and a an attraction they just can't fight. Total fun.
Another wonderful performance by Melanie Fraser. I love her narrations, taking me directly into the story and keeps me listening.
This was the first one in the series I listened to, and while it could stand alone, I do think having the history of the others would have been beneficial.
Another great Trent book!!! Genvieve wishes to have purpose in life and not sit around doing needlepoint and gossiping!! When she goes to the docks to find where her mothers belongings are she believes she has found a purpose. That purpose is getting Jonathan organized because that us what she does best. Jonathan Bridges has found out his secretary and a few employees might have been stealing from him and a lot of his cargo has either been misplaced or stolen. He finds Genvieve rummaging through his invoices. Can 2 stubborn people come together for happiness. A wonderful book with a great ending.

Needless to say, I was so bored with this story that I removed all of Jane Charles novels I had in "Want to Read" section. The narrator was ok. Its hard to judge a narrator when the story was just dull. However, her "Italian" accent was more like a Russian accent to me. In conclusion, this was not close to being a winner for me.
Great book. Entertaining and quick paced. I just love that most of the previous characters are continued into the entire book series. Even though all of the siblings are married I would love there to be another book. The humor created by this large family is wonderful! Will Rose get a second chance to find love...and what happens to Thorn...
Jonathan - owns a shipping company Genevieve - loves to organize I enjoyed reading this entertaining story that is well written with charismatic characters. Maybe because I'm binging on this series but its getting old the ' I love my feel for independence more than you, and the H says owell,...ok ' he shows more acceptance and not a real equal relationship. Their story has a witty HEA.
