I am sure this book was most helpful when it was written - in 2004. However, technology has made it pretty much obsolete. Most of us have Smart Phones so we no longer need GPS devices, maps or compasses. All of that is built into my phone. I did gain a few helpful hints for a beginner geocacher and will be more prepared the next time we go out on a hunt. The book was written, as are all Dummies books, in a very readable and easy to understand format.
Straightforward, a bit outdated on technology (this version was written before iPhones, so it assumes you need a GPS device rather than just an app for your smartphone). It's still a good intro on the important stuff, like the etiquette and history of geocaching. Except for the app, everything you need to get started and excited about geocaching is in here.
A great introduction to the 'treasure hunting' pursuit that is geocaching. I actually found my first caches last weekend; one easy, one hard. I am still bearing teh scratches from the 'hard' cache. And all from the comfort of my mobile phone / PDA. To paraphrase Cicero ( a la O tempora, O mores); 'Oh the times, Oh the technology!'. Check out geocaching - it's quite fun.
I can sum this entire book up right here: get a GPS unit and go to geocaching.com. I was pretty disappointed in the information and can't believe that a book was actually written based on those 2 concepts.
Like many of the "For Dummies" books, this is great if you want to figure out what you need to do to get started, and also contains a lot of information if you've already started and want to learn more.
Since this book was published geocaching has exploded and every mobile Device has GPS so most of the information it's out dated. However if you are new to the hobby you will probably learn some tricks.
This is a pretty good starter book on geocaching. It's a good review for the experienced cacher as well. Lots of good advice on hiding, searching fo r a cache, and even what GPSr to use. As well as information on what kind of shorthand some cachers use.
Great for any muggle wanting to learn about this real life treasure seeking game. It is a favorite of my family and the kids really love it. Creative fun at a very low cost.
