Несмертельный голован

Он сам почти миф, а история его – легенда. Чтобы повествовать о нем – надо быть французом, потому что одним людям этой нации удается объяснить другим то, чего они сами не понимают. Я говорю все это с тою целию, чтобы вперед испросить себе у моего читателя снисхождения ко всестороннему несовершенству моего рассказа о лице, воспроизведение которого стоило бы трудов гораздо лучшего мастера, чем я. Но Голован может быть скоро совсем позабыт, а это была бы утрата. Голован стоит внимания, и хотя я его знаю не настолько, чтобы мог начертать полное его изображение, однако я подберу и представлю некоторые черты этого не высокого ранга смертного человека, который сумел прослыть «несмертельным».

Простая история о хорошем человеке, ставшем героем в глазах окружающих. Много интересных зарисовок о быте и обычаях того времени.

This book, translated in Dutch and so named “De Onsterfelijke”, is known by most people as “Golowan”. It is very surprisingly written about a man named Golowan, who moves close to a village named Oriol, and establishes a reputation as a kindhearted, gifted, but strange man. Rich in the soul, poor in life.

I’ve seen the book many times in my local antiquarian, and didn’t get the chance to buy it for a while. I am guilty of judging a book by it’s cover, it is the most beautiful bookcover I have seen yet, and I am quite saddened that it’s beauty did not equalize with it’s story.

And so I ought to say that the storyline itself was not as catchy as the portrayal of the characters in it. The story lacked the depth, it lacked true emotion and “action”. The characters, especially Golowan, of course, were explained with such depth; but Leskov still had the great intention of hiding many things behind a thick curtain. This, in my opinion, did great for the story, but despite it’s pro, there was it’s con; you were unable to form some emotional connection or understanding, thus faces get blurred and names forgotten.
Things happened too slow, yet too fast, and the story ended faster than it should’ve. I feel like “Golowan” has been betrayed as a great book idea.
The book follows from an outer-perspective, it is a number of letters and stories written by a young man who has known Golowan since he was a child. This perspective adds to the mystery of the man Golowan, as we will never know, what truly goes on in his mind. Thinking about it, this is one of the best assets of the book, although it’s not something you might realize while reading it.

Truly an average short-story classic, in a good sense.

Ещё одним воспоминанием поделился Николай Лесков с читателем. Он вспомнил про Несмертельного Голована, о котором имел представление до семилетнего возраста, а после потерял из виду. Этому человеку везло в том, что он не боялся смерти. Куда бы не несла его жизнь, всюду он удивлял людей своей живучестью. Особенно его удача пригодилась во время эпидемии, называемой пупырух, а в более обыденном понимании – сибирской язвой. Вот где он сумел принести пользу. Ухаживая за умирающими, он знал некий секрет, поскольку болезнь обходила стороной и его домашний скот.
