Scarlet secret

Rate this book

I‘m really sorry to say that but I don’t get the hype around it…

I mean the story was nice but it’s way too hasty and it just didn’t let me connect anyhow with the characters or the story itself. Also whats with the baby??? We got a panel and then nothing?? Ugh. The only beautiful thing here is the art.

Plot
Yamataikoku (邪馬台国) is ruled by a queen called *Himiko* (卑弥呼). She has a thousand ladies-in-waiting. There is only one man who is allowed to stay with her, as he knows her secret — Yamato is his name.

(Aside: 邪馬台国 (Per JDIC): Yamataikoku is a historical Japanese state thought to have existed during the late Yayoi period.)

Yamato had a friend when he was around 7 called Shiki. One day, Queen Himiko came by their village and “chose” Shiki, who appeared to be sacrificed in a fire. Ten years later, he finds Shiki again — only Shiki refuses to acknowledge that he is Shiki, and refers to himself as The Queen, Mihiko.

(Aside re: their ~reunion — Yamato comes across Shiki bathing in a lake when he’s bringing rice somewhere, and conveniently is able to embrace Shiki and have a heartfelt moment before Shiki’s bodyguards appear. Honestly:

1. Why is the empress bathing in a lake in the middle of nowhere or not within the whatever palace grounds?

2. Where the hell did her bodyguards go? It’s not like they needed to be anywhere else except there? Why did it take so long for them to go after Yamato?)

One year after this disappointing reunion, Yamato is all tatted up and the villagers are all, gasp, he’s back to his old self again, unlike when he was being all moody and depressed and not coming home. But his goal is to enter the Empress’ service, not to lead his tribe as chieftain, having ascertained that Shiki is indeed alive.

On the day his village is granted an audience with the Queen, he is allowed by the Queen to enter into her household as “general” of her army. (There was some talk of castration since he’s a dude, but this doesn’t come to anything.) We also find out that Shiki-as-Mihiko is not quite human. he doesn’t need to eat or sleep, and he can heal wounds or illnesses with a touch.

Yamato is sent out to help a village upon which great illness has befallen. He is able to bring back the villagers to the palace to be saved, but apparently falls to the illness himself. It’s just an excuse to have sexy times and for Shiki to be naked with Yamato, although I’m not really sure that the handjob is needed to “heal” Yamato of his illness, honestly. (YOU DIDN’T EVEN FINISH IT, SHIKI.)

Now for some flashback to get insight on how Shiki spent the past ten years.

● Although Yamato remembers Shiki being sacrificed in a fire, the little hut constructed for the ceremony concealed a hidey-place connected to a tunnel that led all the way to the palace. Shiki escaped to the palace before it was set on fire.

● Yamataikoku used to have a king, but he abdicated the throne for his wife to serve as ruler, and that Queen was Mihiko. She brought peace to Yamataikoku, and when she died the king immediately crowned his daughter as queen — and that queen is the current miko-sama. Since her father’s passing, the Queen has shouldered the twin burdens of ritual and law.

● She is immortal (不老不死), but eternally pure (生涯純潔) and as such cannot (will not) have children or grandchildren. Then-Queen tells Shiki that they are of a kind — as they have the same strange red eyes — but she bows to him and asks him, won’t he please let her leave her powers to him?

(Aside: Shiki tried to escape in his early days in the palace, but realized he was trapped there. The walls were too high for him to scale. Mako, the elf-spirit-otherworldly creature, said that at that time, Shiki had repeatedly cried and begged Yamato to save him. Wow — thanks for the guilt trip ten years later, Mako.)

Shiki realizes that she too is lonely, and accepts the then-Queen’s ~offer. He is given lessons, taught all sorts of things, until the day then-Queen decided he was ready, and they had the ritual that, you know, transformed him. When he awoke, she was there, and she asked him to forgive her for choosing humanity. Shiki asked, so then what’s your name? And she told him.

When next he opened his eyes, then-Queen was gone. He only has a mirror of hers to remember her by.

He mentions to Yamato:

The end of this scene sets up Shiki’s dilemma, as he wonders whether he-as-human will be enough to protect Yamataikoku. He has a lot of fears about losing his powers and being unable to protect the citizens. However, Yamato tells him, “We don’t need an oracle,” and asks to be sent on a mission (to somewhere idr). Shiki agrees on the condition that he returns safely.

Yamato and Shiki are separated — maybe for a year? — as Yamato is away on the mission, but eventually Yamato does return.

In the conclusion, Shiki tells Yamato:

He surrenders his powers (through SEXY TIMES) for humanity with Yamato, who promises to stay with him always. When Shiki wakes up after their love-making, he says he’s hungry, which cheers Yamato up immensely. Then they hear the sound of a baby crying.

Thoughts

● The art is beautiful, but the plot is somewhat predictable. Still, I appreciate that mangaka stuck with their strengths and didn’t go into the specifics of the mission or anything like that — it’s all a year later, ten years later, and here’s where they stand in their relationship.

● Honestly, Yamato and Shiki are generic in their characterization. Nothing about them particularly stands out. However, I did really like the bit where Yamato immediately stops when he feels that Shiki wasn’t 100% into what they were doing. I was like, A+, Yamato.

● There were precious few other characters in the story — I mean, BL is mostly like that — and I was disappointed that Shiki’s bodyguards Yuu and Mei didn’t have a slightly bigger role. I liked their designs a lot, and I would’ve liked if the author could’ve shown me a bit more about how badass they were.

● I’m assuming that since Yamato isn’t of a kind as Shiki, he’s unable to like, share the power with him. Instead Shiki just loses his power because, y’know, you’re supposed to be eternally pure, and you can’t have that if you just got fucked.

● The ending implies that the crying baby that Yamato and Shiki hear is of a kind with Shiki (as the baby also has red eyes) and therefore can probably take up the mantle of Mihiko or oracle, thereby ensuring Yamataikoku’s continuation.

*Some spoilers*

Interesting story. In the end they stay together, Shiki becomes human again bcs they have sex(first time for him, and maybe for Yamato too). The next day after they have sex in that cave, they hear a sound and they believe is a cat, but it's an abandoned newborn human baby that seems to have Shiki's eye color, so probably same powers. We can presume they found a successor for the role of shamaness.

interesting setting but i would have loved this to be longer :')

the historical fiction + fantasy stuff were very cool to read about, but there was so much stuff that would have been so cool to know more about. i feel like this would have been better as a 2 or 3 volumes story so it had more time to expand the world.
Also, some character's decisions felt some-kind abrupt, extending the story would have helped to make this decisions more natural.

Interesting world building for such a short story. I almost wish it had a few more volumes so it didnt feel so packed into one. But that might also be because I enjoy the main characters and want to see more of them in general. I'm a sucker for this type of couple dynamic. Ending felt a little sloppy but overall it was an interesting single story read.

The artstyle is gorgeous, and even for such a short story I find the world building interesting, and it's surprisingly really plot heavy.

Shiki and Yamato are really charismatic and their relationship is adorable. Since they're childhood friends, you can really feel the trust and intimacy between them.

I have so many questions and I want so much more of these two.

I've found a new favorite! This manga is gorgeous, with so much longing between the leads, and truly interesting world building. I love the devotion these two have to each other, and even though this is a one-shot, it still felt epic and satisfying.

————————————

Me enteré ayer que no va a tener segundo tomo: tristeza.

Einfach toll.

From the getgo, Shiki and Yamato are inseparable. Growing up as best friends, they really aren’t the type to care that Yamato is the son of the chief of their village or that Shiki has bright red eyes. Heck, they don’t even care that they’re both boys as Yamato pledges his love to Shiki and insists on marrying him one day before they’re both even teenagers...

The art style alone would deserve a 5stars but the story feels sketched out rather than told to its fullest
The author came up with a complex fantasy world with a unique tribal based empre system led by a bloodline of prophets passing down their powers through blood magic
Theres sign of fashinating cultural elements like ritual tattooing and sacrificial rituals
Its intense and beautiful but nothing is explored
Still it was a good read

WE LOVE ENTHUSIASTIC AND CLEAR CONSENT!!!! I love this childhood friend to lovers story. I love a good historical, and this took the androgyny of one of our characters to a different level. I really liked all of it though. I love how the two heroes truly had each other's back and trusted each other fully.

Fantasy manga, a village boy is chosen to be a human sacrifice by the nation’s shamaness and his best friend searches for him after refusing to accept that he’s dead. This was fine, the art was pretty but I wish it was longer as I found it too short to be impactful.
