From 'There' To 'Here': Memoir Of A Journalist Turned Storyteller

Rate this book
Every writer's 'journey' is the same - but different. When someone says to me, "I've always wanted to write, but didn't know where to start..." I know they didn't really want to write - because they didn't-even-start! Writers begin at various points in their life some in their twenties, some in their fifties - and their work might see instant recognition followed by an abrupt halt or see a gradual growth in recognition then a stall or ups then downs then ups and more downs... Or, for a tiny few authors someone plucks their book from obscurity then adapts the plot for television or a movie.I've been writing [something] since I was 12 and from the age of 12 I knew I wanted to write a book, which is ironic because all through school I hated book reports. Okay, that quirk aside - from the perspective of 'my journey' that began with my high school newspaper to a weekly then daily mainstream newspaper, to magazines then to a time when technology caught up with my pile of fiction manuscripts - has been a lifetime - literally. If you think you'd like to write - then at least 'start'. Get yourself a notebook and nice pen then 'play' with words and thoughts and ideas. What and how you begin may seem random initially, but a pattern may start to emerge after a few weeks or a year. It doesn't matter. What will matter is your own 'discovery'. Do you truly want to write or not? Do you 'need' to write? Writing anything - you'll soon discover - whether it's a community newsletter, a blog or a novel will require a great deal of energy. Writing will drain you and fill you at the same time - so even when you're tired you'll feel energized...

I began publishing what I wrote as a novice reporter at 16 for my high school newspaper "The Static". The following school year I was Assistant Editor then in my senior year I was the monthly paper's Editor.

From then on I never stopped writing - moving to a regular column in a weekly community newspaper then features and columns in large city daily newspapers and then expanding to regular magazine features and columns.

With plot ideas and research literally 'piling' up, I left journalism for fiction in 2006 then ePublished my first mystery in 2011. Since then I now have 16 titles in print and electronic format for both adult and MG/YA readers...
