Ahmed Sefrioui, ou Sidi Mohammed, évoque son enfance passée à l'ancienne Médina de Fes. Il menait une vie tranquille auprès de sa mère, femme au foyer, et son père, tisserand.Il a consacré une bonne partie du livre à parler des voisins, des amis de la famille, de leurs habitudes, de leur problèmes et de leur vie quotidienne, et particulièrement de Lalla Aicha, la meilleure amie de samère, qui a souffert à cause de son mari ingras.La paisibilité de la vie de cet enfant de six ans fut troublée par la perte de la bourse de son père, une bourse qui contenait tout son capitale. Ce qui obligea le père de la famille à travailler dans les champs pour pouvoir reprendre ton travail.Pendant son absence, la mère et l'enfant visitaient quotidiennement des mauselées pour demander aux saints de leurs rendre le père sain et sauf.Leur voeux fut exocé un mois après le départ du père, ensuite les choses s'arrangèrent petit à petit.Au milieu de tous ces événements, la boite à merveilles que possédait Sidi Mohammed jouait un rôle très important, elle lui représentait un véritable réconfort quand il avait des ennuies, c'était synonyme d'accès à son propore monde.

About the author

Ahmed Sefrioui (Arabic: أحمد صفروي‎) was a Moroccan novelist and pioneer of Moroccan literature in the French language. He was born in Fes in 1915 of Berber parents.
Sefrioui was founder of the Al Batha museum in Fes, a town that is present in almost all of his writings. After the Qur'an school and the schools of Fes Sefrioui has made French his own. As a young journalist for "Action du Peuple" and as writer of historical articles as a curator for the "Addoha" museum he mastered the language. After 1938 he worked at the government departments of culture, education and tourism in Rabat. He died in 2004. (Wikipedia)

I finished it only because I was obliged to do so, since it's in my school program and it will be on my final exam (who made this stupid decision anyway? I feel sorry for the next generations who will have to suffer through this).
I gave it two stars because of some beautiful descriptions, but that aside, I didn't like this book at all.
The story is about this boy who's alone as a child, stays alone, sad when the night time comes, always a victim of everything and everyone, and finds comfort in a box full of old unvaluable things.
This is literally how the whole story goes until the very end:
-Booho, I'm alone and miserable and have no one to play with, *insert stereotypes about morocco*
-Booho, i'm sick *insert more stereotypes about morocco*
-My dad left and we're worried :( , *insert even MORE stereotypes about morocco*
-Booho, I'm alone and miserable (deja vu anyone?) but HEY :) at least I have this box full of trash to cheer me up ! But i'm still alone.
First of all, a real Moroccan child at the time this book pretends to be set in, was never alone. They had small "gangs" of boys playing around and having fun everywhere. It's so unrealistic.
Secondly, it seems that Sefrioui wanted to sell his book to French people (because Moroccan readers at the time were counted by the fingers of two hands), and he got this brilliant idea : "If I want my book to sell, I need to insert as much stereotypes about Morocco as I can".
Sometimes, as a Moroccan, I felt a little bit offended by some parts.
There was no development at all. Everything is the same, from page 1 to the end.

P.-s: right after this, I started reading Le Dernier Jour d'un Condamné (The last day of a condamned man - Hugo Victor) and boy, was I overwhelmed. I had to read the first page over and over again. It was music to my ears, a loving melody. Just one paragraph can put the whole book to shame (more than the shame it's already in), no jokes.

Je ne sais pas si la note défavorable est due à l'histoire ou à l'enfer que c'était d'être obligée de la lire au lycée pour passer un examen décisif. Peut-être relirais-je ce roman dans quelques années et changerais d'avis, mais pour l'instant il ne me m'inspire qu'amertume.

Plus qu'un roman autobiographique, je pense que ça serait une poésie sur l'enfance. Plein de floritures, d'exagérations... Personnellement, je trouve qu'il y a de meilleurs bouquins à lire. Mais c'est pas mal non plus, ça laisse une certaine bonne saveur à la bouche lorsqu'on lit les noms de sucreries, fleurs et épithètes.

رواية تتحدث عن الحياة الإجتماعية في مدينة فاس المغربية أثناء الإستعمار الفرنسي للمغرب وقد جاءت على لسان طفل صغير لا يتعدى عمره الست سنوات يصف لنا الحياة في بيته والعلاقة بين والدته وجيرانها من السيدات ومشاركتهم مع بعضهم الأحزان والمصائب قبل الأفراح ويصف البيئة المحلية وما كانت تمر به في ذلك الوقت.

من أجمل ما قرأت.. وحقيقي مستغرب جدا من أن تقييم الرواية مش كبير، الرواية فكرتني بكتير من احداث الطفولة وأكتر شيء اذهلني هو تشابه سلوك وقرب عقليات سكان مدينة فاس المغربية مع بيئتنا المصرية.

"It's so bad I want to give it a zero but i can't, so I give it a one", if there's any book that deserves to have this tiktok audio quote plastered on it more than anything, it's this book. Trash is a good starting point to describe it, never hated a book more than this one, and let's ignore that the only reason I even read this was because it was a school assignment. Otherwise I wouldn't want to be caught dead holding it.

Un roman qui racontait la vie au Maroc pendant le passé d’après un ensemble de personnages unies, amis ou voisins. c'est de la nostalgie ...

Avant d'entamer la lecture de ce livre, j'avais essayé de chasser l'idée d'être obligé à le lire, car, de toutes façons, je vais et je dois incontestablement le lire.
Ce récit énumère diverses anecdotes qui ont jalonné et marqué la tendre enfance du narrateur. Il apparaît aussi que l'auteur essaie de reflèter l'image du Maroc aux années trentes et de mettre à nu le revers de la médaille de la société à l'époque.
Le narrateur semble bien passer par un calvaire. Il montre souvent son dégoût pour les rituels périodiques de la Chouaffa, pour l'école coranique (au départ), le msid, pour le bain maure où l'on sent l'idée de péché, pour les altercations entre les voisines... Etc. En tous ces lieux, le narrateur souffre de la solitude et de l'abandon comme on a étudié en classe. Et pour se détendre, il ouvre sa boîte à merveilles ou il rêve et utilise son imagination du moment que l'invisible et l'abstrait constituent pour lui une échappatoire.
À travers plusieurs passages, on assiste à une émergence d'une maturité précose, et d'une conscience morale chez le narrateur. L'épreuve du bain maure nous en donne bien un exemple.
Je ne peux nier que ce roman m'a beaucoup plu dans certains passages. En fait, plusieurs scènes régalent la perception du narrateur par sa richesse et sa variété. Des couleurs pastels, douces, mais séduisantes, des rithmes et des cacophonies réjouissent l'oreille et cherche à recréer cette ambiance d'une scène folklorique. A travers ses descriptions, le narrateur nous donne des images et des réflexions critiquant la misérable morale des gens à l'époque qui vivaient, malheureusement, dans les ténèbres. A titre d’exemple, les femmes devaient toujours se cacher et les hommes n'avaient pas le droit de voir des femmes étrangères. Autrement dit, les femmes doivent rester clôturer derrière les mûrs ! Ce n'est la faute ni de l'homme, ni de la religion. C'est le poids de la tradition qui a rendu les choses ainsi.

Had to read this book along side Jean Anouilh's 'Antigone' and Victor Hugo's 'Le dernier jour d'un condamne' since it was on my school program in Morocco (for a decisive Exam), i somewhat enjoyed the 2 others and finished them fairly quickly i but couldn't complete this one until one month before the exam...it was so full of stereotypes and soulless characters with a lot of mixed up confusing names and a dull story overall, i give it 3 stars for 3 reasons:

1/I was living in the ancient médina of Rabat at that moment and i could relate to the author's description of the buildings, roads, sites and atmosphere which I've found pretty cool :)

2/Pretty well written and detailed Descriptions

3/The only character i liked was the author's father, a hardworking brave man which reminds me of mine

Other than that i dont recommend this book since there are way more better french autobiographies to read.

Je donne à ce roman 5 étoiles :) C'est un roman magnifique. Peut être il y avait ces passages où l'auteur décrivait beaucoup les lieux et donnait trop de détails, mais cela n'a pas un grand effet sur le livre, puisque ce dernier est magnifique..Il raconte l'histoire d'un petit enfant dans l'ancienne médina de Fés je crois et ses expérience hebdomadaires avec ses petits amis dans sa boîte à merveilles ainsi qu'avec les voisins, le Msid où il étudiait et sa relation avec ses parents..Une expérience magnifique à ne pas rater <3

تدور أحداث الرواية في مدينة ( فاس ) المغربيه في زمن الإستعمار الفرنسي للمغرب من عام 1912 م : 1956 م .

وتدور أحداث الرواية عن حياة النساء في المجتمع المغربي التقليدي فتتمحور الرواية حول حياتهن اليومية ومشاكلهن وأحلامهن وعقلياتهم الساذجة البسيطة المُنسجمة مع مجتمع يحكمه الموروث الشفوي وعادات الأسلاف.

وتُبرز الرواية بعض المعتقدات الخرافية التي كانت مُنتشرة في ذلك الزمن مثل اللجوء إلى خدمة العرافين والعرافات وزيارة الأضرحة والمقامات ، وتقديم النذور والتشفع بمقامات الأولياء الصالحين.

الرواية سهلة وبسيطة وأيضاً اللغة سهلة خالية من التعقيد ، أعتقد أنها جيدة للمبتدأين في القراءة.

I understand that a lot of teens hate this book, because, unlike our era which is full of excitement and action, Ahmed Sefriou's live was calm and peaceful. Not many events that worth being told. However, I liked it, especially the parts that concern the neighboors fights, their curiosity and solidarity.
All the small , insignificant details(chouafa, fquih, the barber)made it for me a beautiful trip to the old medina of Fez - that I adore- in all it splendor.

فاس ... مدينتي ... موطني ...كل ذكرياتي مرتبطة بهذه المدينة
التي احتظنتني بين ذراعيها المليئة بالخدوش وقلبها الذي كاد يتمزق من شدة اتساعه بأناسه ... القصة تدور في هذه المدينة فاس العاصمة العلمية كما تلقب .

يأخدنا الكاتب معه لنعيش أحداث طفولته في حي " المدينة القديمة " أشهر مدن فاس الذي يتوافد عليه السياح من كل حدب وصوب ، هذا الحي العريق الذي يشتهر بمعالمه التاريخية وبكثرة أبوابه ك ( باب الفتوح ،باب الخوخة، وباب أبي الجنود ( بوجلود) ) وزواياها ، ومساجدها وجامعتها المعروفة عالميا جامعة القرويين

`` گآن بإمـگآني أن أصـفح عن آلكبآر مـتى عرضـوني للتقريع ، وللضـرب أحيآنآ مـن أجل أمـور بسـيطـة ، لكنني لم أغفر لهم عجزهم عن فهمـي ``

أثناء قراءة هذا العمل الأدبي الذي يدور في الماضي أظن في التسعينيات ، لاحظت الفرق العجيب و الغريب الذي طرأ على هذه المدينة ، والذي جعل العديد من التساؤلات تدور في ذهني

كم تغيرت يا فاس ؟ أهذا ماكنت عليه حقا ؟ أهذه هي فاس التي أعرفها ؟ أهذه هي المدينة القديمة التي أزورها كل ما ذاقت بي الدنيا لأتوه بين أحيائها المتشابهة لدرجة تثير لديك مشاعر من الرهبة والإجلال ؟ هل كان سكانها القدامى بهذه البساطة فعلا ؟
هل فاس من تغيرت أم نحن ؟

نادرا ما أقرأ الأعمال المغربية ولا اعلم السبب لكن هذه الرواية مغايرة ، أحببت كل حرف فيها ، ابتداءا من الأسماءالغريبة أحيانا المتداولة التي تندر في الدول العربية الأخرى ك ( زوبيدة و فاطمة البزيوية ، إدريس الأقرع ،سلامة، وزهور ... )

اذا كنت تبحث عن قصة مثيرة مليئة بالغموض والحبكة الدرامية فلا تقرأ هذه الرواية ولكن إذا أردت أن تلقي نظرة على مدينة فاس فى عام 1954 وان تعيش بين طيات منازلها لفترة قصيرة تتعرف فيها على الحياة الاسرية والاجتماعية فى ذلك الوقت ،حين إذ ستجد هذا الكتاب مسلياً خاصة وأنت تنظر إلى ذلك المجتمع من منظور طفل صغير يراقب كل ما حوله من أحداث.
