No matter where I go or how far I run, he'll always find me.
Avery, My parents thought it was a wonderful idea to hook up with a rival family's son, maybe it would bring everyone together. It didn't . Not even close. When I tried to break things off I lost everything and everyone . My parents are gone, and now I'm forced to move across the country, to the unknown. Straight into the arms of Asher Mancini.
Obsessive. Relentless. Cruel. Evil. Deadly.
Asher, I didn’t plan on finishing my senior year at Blackwood Academy... until Avery Stone showed up. I don't need to finish up the year I lost. My future in this world of death and destruction has already decided, since before I was born.
I’m a KING . Avery doesn't realize who she's up against. She thinks of me as a monster , maybe I am. One thing is for certain, I'll never let her go.
This is not your average love story, this is a dark romance intended only for mature readers. TRIGGER warnings apply.
K.J. loves creating dark, and forever twisted, characters. A Mom to four freaking awesome kids, she currently lives in New England with her Husband, three teenage boys, and a small herd of fluffy animals.
DNF due to inconsistency How can three months ago the herorine parents were murdered , she had to get fake identities and move to a whole different country and all of a sudden she's some kick ass girl who has a best friend and is tangling into other mafia families 🤡
This book is too short, on the boring side, and nothing really happens aside from some posturing by the hero. The author ended it in a cliffhanger and that really was a mistake. If she had continued it and just finished it as one full sized book I might have thought it was ok. The way it is, I won’t even remember it enough to look for the next book in the series.
After a grabbing beginning as I settled into read this series, I discovered I was doobed. While this new adult, mafia romance had potential, it was stunted with clunky writing, excessive inner monologue, and unforgivable grammatical errors. Also, something was amiss in character development. While the main characters were similarly aged, the hero Asher felt far older, written almost as if he were 10 years older. Willing suspension of disbelief, ok, but this just felt off.
Story wise I might have been hooked — the characters were great actually as well as where I thought the plot was headed— if not for the verbose, self-reflective writing, slow plot, and unsightly grammatical errors. Alas I lost interest and had to call it at 30%.
I don’t get why these guys think making girls a living h*ll will make them come crawling back to them but it does make a great story. This is the first book in this new series and I’m hooked. I gave a feeling it’s only yo na get better from here. Can’t wait to find out what’s next for Asher and Avery.

I want to reference that this is a mafia book with a girl in hiding and warring families. There's something to be said when someone has a new take on a mafia story, and KJ has definitely done this. A young woman has lost her parents, is shipped to California to keep her safe from the obsessive psycho who tried to take her out.
Then there is the obsessive guy who wants her, and he is the head of his own family. He's juggling his family, school and his desire for her. She is a girl who is strong and isn't afraid of anything that is thrown her way. She wants to make a life for herself. It's a quick read that ends in a cliffhanger. There is not very much spice, but there is a lot of tension.
Okay there are things to like about this book but then there are things to not like Avery is strong and dosen't take crap from the mean girls or anyone else and refuse Ashere more then once. But then she gets all blah with the crying shes pretty much lived a mob life her entire life just had nothing to do with the business its like she has two personalities. And Asher is a major dill hole i am a big bad man correction boy who is very self envolved apparently he dosen't comprehend the word No he thinks Avery will be like all the other chicks in his life slutz to the extreme.
Avery losses everything to a fire caused by her crazy ex so her grandfather moves her to California for her protection shes staying with some cousins but has no adult supervision and you know what happens when theres know adults around trouble and boy dose she find it all because she makes friends with a girl Tatum without finding anything out about her or her family. This puts her write back in danger the girl has a cousin Asher Moretti mister obsessed he won't leave her alone and she needs to stay under the radar or her ex will find her. She desires Asher but she just plain hates him she wants nothing to due with the Maffia anymore. Next major issue apparently there is some major trouble between the Mirretti clan and her Grandfather head of the Romano crim family. This is not going to end well.
Asher has the looks but hes such a jerk but this is a bully romance. Some of his highlights dosen't like being told no extremely shady this is the mob so yah hes really working that angle. Also he manages to get really obsessed over a girl Avery she has him tied up in knots of frustration he cant control her so he thinks if she goes away he will forget her so he instigates the bullying at school that backfires but when Avery gets a visitor from home her secret comes out and you guessed it Asher knows major cliffhanger. Asher will definitely use this to his advantage poor Avery her life is about to get even more complicated and the ex Luca he may already know were she is. So as much as these two characters frustrated me I just have too read the next one if only too see what demented crap Asher pulls next.
I was allowed to read and advance copy of this book via Booksprout and this is my honest review.
I don’t know how to go about this review I’m kinda lost. So it starts off a bit all over the place and the reason I say that is the start just doesn’t start right, your reading two povs and three months ago something happens and then jumps to the other character and reading their pov which is now present time but that’s not what I’m getting at. The story itself is pretty good, the plot etc It’s the two characters and their povs
We have these young characters, come from powerful families, trained when they were still in nappies for the life they live You have your fmc Avery who comes across like she’s got attitude, not scared of anybody and is trained to protect herself What you don’t know is when you first read Averys character and the scene she is in you think she just a normal teenager Then you learn she’s part of a powerful family and that’s she’s been trained etc etc Then you have your mmc Asher and he’s the most powerful 19 year old in the world lol again his character Again I’m confused with his character, he’s suppose to be this monster, bad guy. Kills people etc etc But he also bloody confusing He does contradict himself so much He won’t do sex trafficking but he happy for his nephews to hit his niece etc because they were brought up for women to respect the men in the family. Without trying to ruin the story and giving much away but he has no idea how to woo a woman, I know he never had to with him being powerful that women throw themselves at him but even still he not gone about a woman’s right to say no and he lacks respect for women His character for me is all over the place. I just can’t grasp it. I feel like the book has potential and it’s lacking with the characters.
I’m probably not making myself clear to you so I apologise. I have definitely found it hard to explain properly with how confused this book has made me lol
This bully romance that stars young people from mafia families also has some of the funniest moments. Asher Mancini at 19 is the boss of his family but he wants to go back to Blackwood to finish his last year, since his niece Tate and her best friend Avery attend the school. He is completely obsessed with Avery since the first moment he sees her. Avery at 17 loses her parents bc of her ex Luca, who didn’t take the breakup well and decided to set her house on fire. Avery’s grandfather is the one who decides to send her to Blackwood so that she can finish her studies and remain hidden until things are sorted out. Avery will suffer relentless harassment from Asher, but she stands up to him every time and is that she is not what we say a submissive girl. Until Asher discovers Avery’s true identity and manages to put her in a real bind. I ❤️it, I’m going to read the second book right away.
“One way or another you belong to me. Until you realize that, your life is going to be fucking miserable.”"This isn’t how you treat somebody you like. I can only imagine how you treat somebody that you love.”
"If she doesn't leave I don't know what I'll do. I might end up killing her.”
Let me start by saying I honestly thought Asher was and still is an ASSh0le. Does he not know the word NO? I did not like him at all in this book. Avery well she to me was a bit naïve and not at all someone who I would really like in life. This story for me dragged on and on, I mean how many times can you hear a guy say c'mon let me fork you and the girl saying no. It was not a story that grabbed me. I honestly thought it was too long and was repetitive. It was definitely a bully story but I did not get into it like I do with some stories. The writing was just ok for me and I thought that KJ did not need all the filler to tell the story. Some stories will grab you and then there are those that are just blah. This was one of those stories that was just blah for me.

Hiding from Monsters is the first book in the Blackwood Academy series. I don't read much bully trope and even less of the High School version. But as I have read a number K.J. Thomas's books I decided to give this new series a try. Well it turns out that this was not really for me. The H is horrible and not just because he is a bully but just because he is a azz to the ninth degree. I also found myself skimming and skipping parts of the book without feeling like I had missed anything much, which is never a good sign to me. I will most likely pass on the rest of this series but hopefully the author will do another series like the first, The Moreetti Siblings, which I fell in love with. If you love the HS/young adult bully trope then you will most likely like this book.
I want more! What a great start to the series. I was sucked in from page one. It was full speed ahead till the very end. I loved that Avery took no crap from anyone including Asher. Oh, poor Asher. He always got his way till Avery came along and that was that. I believe he never heard the word NO before and the little time that he has known Avery that’s all he heard. Avery has been through so much. It seems though that she is a magnet for obsessive over the top men who want to own her. One has become psycho and took away her family and made her go into hiding, the other hasn’t quite figured out what he wants but he wants her under him to start. He is so powerful who knows what he’ll do to get his way. Story end in one hell of a cliffhanger so definitely going to download the next book.
I was immediately intrigued by the summary of this book as it combines two of my fave tropes: mafia/mob and high school bully. I have to say though that the execution of this book left a lot to be desired for me. I don’t mind the guy having to fight a little for the girl... AT ALL... but I don’t want to read 200-plus pages of the guy constantly saying “come on, let me f*** you out of my system” and the girl responding with “it’s never going to happen, leave me alone.” The story itself wasn’t that interesting and didn’t really draw me in either... just an average read for me.

The book starts off with a bang! Avery has just gone through a tragic incident, which makes her leave her home and go into hiding. I wanted to protect Avery, she has gone through so much and she could not get a break. There is also Asher, this guy needs help! The way he kept making it hard on Avery and Tate, I wanted to murder and have him at the same time.... I love this book cause Avery is NO daisy, she will fight her bullies and not be taken advantage off!!! Asher, on the other hand, I know his character will grow and he will be the rock that Avery can depend on...

After almost dying you would think things should be looking up from there. She didn't die...she just lost everything that ever mattered.
Shipped off into hiding. Starting at a new school for senior year. The only one real friend she's made...happeneds to be related to someone who could be the biggest threat to her life. Yes even more threatening than the man who tried to kill her and failed. No worries about him. He'd only you know...still hunting her.
If she doesn't play her cards right. This new asshole will have her personally delivered to the man who wants her dead.
I was severely disappointed in this book. The book got 4.5 stars on Amazon, and I can’t figure out why.
The book was clunky. There were inconsistencies (I still don’t know where the main character grew up: East Coast vs Chicago), the timeline didn’t add up, and there were grammatical errors (my biggest pet peeve). Also, the maturity levels of the characters weren’t that believable (seriously, it’s almost impossible for a 19-year old to be acting this mature).
The plot is pretty good, which is why I’m willing to read the rest of the series. However, I simply can’t give it more than 2 stars.
Ends with a cliffhanger, but this book is totally worth it. I hate cliffhangers, but when the book is this good I can deal with it. Avery is in danger, and not just from what she is running from. Asher always gets his way. So when he wants Avery and she wants nothing to do with him. That is a problem and Asher will not back down. Asher just needs the right leverage. And when he finds it all bets are off. This is a truly exciting read and I cannot wait to read what happens next.

Well the book starts off with a tragedy after Avery's ex torches her house and kills her family. She is sent by her grandfather to Blackwood Academy and there she has a friend called Tatum. When Asher comes on the scene things go from bad to worse. Avery is a strong character and she can fight. Plenty of twists in this story. Is Asher as b ad as he is portrayed or will he get worse? We will have to wait for the next book to find out.

I volunteered to read this ARC for an honest review. This was a dark story about Asher and Avery. She's had a rough past, family getting murdered and running for her life. Asher is the head is the Mancini family, even at 19. Avery is sent to live with family in California and will attend Blackwood Academy, unfortunately that's were Archer is finishing his senior year. He becomes obsessed with his niece's friend. But she's hiding something.

Omg what a way to kick off a book. What heartbreak poor Avery goes through. Which shows you how much of a strong character she is. We see her have to move in with her mothers cousin across the country to hide from Luca. She becomes friends with Tate who ends up being Asher's niece. With his obsession over Avery we see things get crazy full of twists as he fights to get her to be his. But Avery can't let that happen no matter how much she wants him too. Also with that cliffhanger ending your going to want book 2 straight away
I love this book. There is so much suspense and the side characters are as good as the leads. There is lots of suspense, lots of mystery and a lot of steamy tension.
I love the cliffhanger ending.
Avery is awesome. She is everything that a mafia princess should be and more.
Asher has so much attitude that comes with his role, but at times I want to slap him. He just doesn’t get the word no.
There isn’t a part of this book I don’t love. I gave 4 stars rather than 5 because I would’ve liked more scenes of Avery and Asher together, exploring their chemistry
OMG I freakin’ love Avery she is such a brilliant character and I also love Tate and what she is going through not wanting to be with her family as Avery would give anything to be with hers. I knew Asher was going to find out who she is and use it against her and it just shows how much of a prick he is trying to bully her out of the school and town because she didn’t want to sleep with him. Well I can’t wait for the next book to see what happens but I think he will protect her when Luca comes calling as he won’t want her to be hurt or killed.
I was so excited when I saw that this author has another series coming out. Avery and Asher will pull you into this story from the very first line of the first chapter. This author never disappoints and I cannot wait for the next book, especially after this cliffhanger. How can you end the book like this? 5 stars

This is book one in a new series and so it does end with a cliffhanger. Avery and Asher have a connection that neither one of them expected. There are secrets between them though and I’m sure they shall all be revealed throughout the series. I was a tad disappointed in this book, I thought it could have been a bit better, it didn’t really live up to the blurb. That being said it was a good read.

Avery life hasn't been a bag of roses , her family is murdered , and she runs for her life, she is send to California to live with family. There she will attend Blackwood Academy, and that's where she sees Asher the head of the mafia Mancini family. Asher is infatuated with Avery and he wants her. This was a great read and I highly reccommend

The story started out with a horrific scene filled with danger and that trend continued until the shocking cliffhanger. The setup for the next book was perfect. The characters are intriguing and there seems to be so much more still to learn. This is one of the best bully romance books I’ve read this year. She’s compelling in her mysterious nature and he’s magnificent in his darkness. Great characters; intriguing danger and darkness; and captivating cliffhanger.
first book to be read by K.J. Thomas. I am definitely impressed. I loved how Avery stood up for herself and didnt back down the entire time of this book. I want more female charcters like her!! Asher and his obession this is only going to get better. I love the whole dynamic of story. A 19year old the head of a mafia family yet still in high school? And a 18 year old hiding from her past? What could possibly go wrong
This is the first book I've read from this author. I really enjoyed it, I loved Tate and Avery, they were both strong without being unreasonable. I enjoyed the little comedic moments that were amusing the other boys in Ashers crew, it was nice to read a male character who seemed openly afaid of his true feelings. I also liked how the plot wasn't littered with huge petty girly fights , this was only a sub plot. Will download book two!
This book was just okay for me. The writing doesn't really flow, and there were several grammatical errors. The actual storyline was pretty good; however, the ending seemed kind of abrupt, and it also ends with a cliffhanger, which I wasn't aware of. I would give this book 3-1/2 stars.

This is not your average bully romance book , oh no this is amazing and brilliantly written. It's a bully mafia romance book with lots of angst , sexy alpha males and a kicka** female lead. It starts with a bang and follows on from there . I can't wait for book 2 .
I love this story ! I could not believe I had never read a book by this author :( . I can't wait for the 2 book to come out.to the author : please don't take to long I can't wait to see what happens I was at the edge of my seat with the beginning I know I won't be disappointed with the next book😎🙏😏
