Evidence that a notorious criminal is hiding out in a small, seaside town in rural Maine leads to an FBI agent going undercover in this new Romantic Thriller from New York Times bestselling author Toni Anderson.
Grady Steel returns to the insular community of Deception Cove, Maine, where he spent his troubled youth unfairly labeled the town’s bad boy. Now a member of the FBI’s elite Hostage Rescue Team, Grady is on a risky undercover mission, hunting one of the FBI’s Most Wanted fugitives.
Recovering from a broken marriage, Brynn Webster comes home to the sleepy small town—where nothing ever happens—to help her parents run their seaside cafe during her mother’s illness. After diving into the frigid waters of the winter harbor to rescue a dead man, Brynn begins to realize that the ocean isn’t the only place swirling with dangerous undercurrents.
Grady befriends the pretty manager of the local cafe in an effort to unearth the town’s closely guarded secrets. Deceiving Brynn isn’t easy, though, especially when he starts to fall for her. Then, when decades-old crimes lead to modern-day murder, Grady’s mission becomes a race against time as he strives to catch a ruthless killer—before Brynn becomes the next victim. All the books can be read as standalone novels.

I read a lot. I read different authors because, well, I read a lot. There are a select few that I really, really look forward to reading and Toni Anderson is one of them. She delivers a complex plot, interesting, developed characters and a mystery who done it that keeps you involved to the very end. I've found that her books are a high point for me, and I wish there were more authors who delivered the way she does, every single time.
Grady Steel has worked his entire adult life to distance himself from his bad boy reputation and his prisoner father. He became an FBI agent then part of the elite HRT, Hostage Rescue Team, the best of the best. He is justifiably proud of his achievements. But when he returns home after an eight-year absence it is not the decorated FBI agent, it is the disgraced bad boy the town sees. After his grandmother died, Grady had no use for Deception Cove, Maine. This unwanted visit as an undercover agent is not going to change the town's opinion of him and only adds to his bad rap. But the fingerprints of a criminal on the FBI's Most Wanted List have turned up in the bank in Deception Cove and Grady has ties to the community and the FBI has provided him a reason to visit.
After the bank robbery and then a murder, Brynn Webster is wondering what is going on in her sleepily seaside village. Brynn is home to help her mother who is undergoing chemo treatment to run the local diner. She is also trying to move on from her disaster of a marriage after her husband left her and never looked back. Brynn is not looking for another relationship until Grady dives into her life and reawakens a part of her she thought was long dead.
The very last thing Grady wants, or needs, is a red-hot attraction to the beautiful Brynn. But there are dangerous secrets in this little town and Grady has a job to do and Brynn is in the middle of everything.
Downloaded this early this morning, started reading immediately! Did not stop til I finished it today! The plot is such that it keeps you reading! The FBI is hunting a serial killer that has changed his appearance and life! However fingerprints has brought them to a small town where they're sure he's hiding out. That's how FBI Grady and Brynn who's running her Mother's cafe meet. There's a bank robbery, murders, arson, a bit of romance (of course) and an ending that will truly surprise you! I love the way Toni Anderson draws you into these stories, then keeps you wanting more! I appreciate the privilege of reading this advance copy, AND for the hours of truly enjoyable reading. I never want her stories to end.
Books based in small towns are not my cup of tea so I wasn't expecting to like Cold Snap as much as I did. There was so much going on, so many threads being pulled in different directions, so unlike a lot of the recent romantic suspenses I've read. Even though it was based in a small town where I'd assumed not a lot would happen, it'd be the typical, easy-going RS, I was pleasantly surprised since something or the other was constantly snagging my attention.
I loved the suspense, really liked Grady and Brynn. Extra brownie points for Grady being active duty in the FBI, I'm kinda done with the ex-military dude trope because of how stagnant and boring most of the stories have gotten. But active duty military or police always hits the spot. There were a lot of twists and turns which are always expected of Toni. I just wish there was an epilogue and a more rounded out end to Grady and Brynn's story.
The one thing I absolutely hated was reading anything about Ryan. I dislike the dude a lot. Yes, I'm sad that he lost his wife and daughter, but that does not make his manwhoring behaviour any easier to digest. I hated him in the last book too. IIRC, he slept with a waitress just the night/a few hours before he kissed Donnelly, his love interest for the next book. To be fair, Donnelly kissed him and propositioned him for a romp in the sheets because her father had just died and she was emotional and grieving. Every time Ryan was in the scene or I had to read his pov I wanted to stop reading. Sure, he could bang anything that moved but sleeping beside them is a big deal. Fuck off. It also didn't help his case that he lies to Brynn about Grady, therefore making them become as miserable as his sorry, std-infested ass is🙄 Unsurprisingly enough, I'll be skipping his book.
Other than Ryan's whorish ways, my reason for not giving this 5 stars is that this book took me more than two weeks to complete. This was also partly a "it's not the book, it's me" problem. I was in a bad slump and nothing could keep my attention, but I finished the second half of the book within a couple of days. Instead of detailed sexcapades of secondary characters, I would've preferred more intimate time between BRady, the one scene wasn't enough to satiate me. I also wish Grady got more closure and acceptance from the town that shunned and looked down at him. The people that insulted him every chance they got should've been made to eat crow. Although whatever happened to Darrell York (not a spoiler) was nothing short of sweet pleasure and the bastard got his dues.
Really loved this book ! Suspense, drama, love story, spies ! It has it all. This kept me guessing right to the end. Lots of red herrings. I really liked the two main characters and many of the other characters, although HRT agent Ryan (cowboy), fell down in my esteem at the end. Well written, great plot, another winner for Toni Anderson.
Toni Anderson has once again created a believable world with multifaceted characters. Small towns are noted for everyone being in everyone else’s business. Preconceived prejudices are blessing for Grady Steel’s assignment. He just never expected to find love. Cold Snap is about an intriguing, suspenseful undercover operation to locate and apprehend former FBI Agent Eli Kane who has been on the run for 27 years. Although Cold Snap is a story that is steeped with betrayal, murder and deception, it is also about finding acceptance and love.
I first started reading Toni’s books when I came across her Cold Justice Series with Cold Dark Place. I have read every book she has written. I am never. disappointed! I enjoy rereading her books. The characters have become old friends. This year started listening to her audible books.
Cold Snap is a fast paced and fantastic book that meets every expectation I’ve grown to expect from Toni Anderson
OMG!! I loved this story so much!! I’m not going to go into detail about the whole story in this review, but do check out other reviews if you want a summary.
Toni Anderson has been one of my very few auto buy authors since I first discovered her “Cold”series back in 2019. The first book I read was way into the series but I loved it and then became obsessed with the characters and the world she has created. I then had to go back and read the series from the beginning and then I had to catch up with the series up to that point and since then as soon as I see the next book in the series is up for pre order, I’m right there clicking that auto buy pre order button and then waiting rather impatiently for the next book to drop. For me I think Toni is one of the best romantic suspense authors we have. The books are standalones but a lot of the characters and storylines are often connected through the books, so I do recommend starting from book one. Even though overall the Cold Series is one long continuous series, they are broken down into 3 individual series so far. They are Cold Justice which follows the BAU department in the FBI - which is 10 books Then it’s Cold Justice - The Negotiators, which follows the CNU department - this series is 5 books And then the current series is called Cold Justice - Most Wanted, which so far is set within the FBI Hostage Rescue Team. This is the current series and Cold Snap is book 3. You will often find characters dipping in and out of each others books, which I love and makes the whole series very fun to read. Knowing that one of your favourite characters could pop up at anytime.
For the most part I have given a majority of the series 5 stars but I felt the last few releases had lost their edge just slightly but not enough for me to give up on the series (the series still remained an auto buy series for me) but with Cold Snap I feel like we are back on top form. I raced through this book and loved every single second. This one has become a new series favourite (to add to the others- see my absolute favourites shelf) 5 brilliant back on top form stars! Roll on Cold Fury-which of course I’ve already pre ordered. I know with Toni I never need a blurb!
Grady Steel never planned to return to his home in Deception Cove, ME. He left with the reputation as a troublemaker and the son of a man despised by the town, and not even his career with the FBI could redeem him in the town's eyes. But he's back at the home his grandmother left to him, deep undercover for the FBI and searching for Eli Kane, a disgraced former FBI agent and fugitive for more than two decades.
Brynn Webster also never planned to return to Deception Cove, but when her mother becomes ill, Brynn returns to run her parents' café while her father takes care of her mother. She's rented the basement apartment in Grady's family home, and it's not long before she becomes embroiled in an investigation she knows nothing about. Their sleepy little town begins to see more crime than it's experienced in Brynn's lifetime, and it's difficult to know who to trust.
This one captured my attention quickly and I devoured it in one evening. With quirky small-town characters, a heartfelt romance, and twists at every turn, I was eager to see how things would work out. Compelling, intriguing, and jaw-dropping, this is sure to be a favorite for any lover of romantic suspense.
The mystery and romance in this tale coalesce perfectly making for a book I just could not put down. The big baddie gave me chills with his narcissism and cruelty. But then Grady and Brynn with all of their baggage and feelings of “less than” coming together just when they needed each other gave us something beautiful and sweet and sexy to lighten the mood. I’m always trying to figure out along with the law enforcement who is the unsub. There are clues, but some lead us astray and we don’t know till so close to the end. The twists, the build up, the falling in love story woven seamlessly into this thriller kept me on the edge of my seat making this one of my favorite books this year.
Cold Snap, the 3rd book in Toni Anderson's Cold Justice series, sees HRT operator Grady Steel going undercover in his home town of Deception Cove, Maine in a hunt for a criminal that's managed to evade justice for over 20 years. While there, he befriends the owner of a local cafe in an attempt to learn more about the town and its people. Brynn Webster is back in Deception Cove to help cover her parents cafe while her family deals with her mother's illness. She's just recovering from a failed marriage and is worried about how attracted she is to Grady when she knows he's there only temporarily. Grady is developing feelings for Brynn and is worried when all the secrets get revealed he's going to lose the first person to make him feel complete. Cold Snap is told in 3rd person, from multiple perspectives.
Romantic suspense perfection! Great cast of characters and a storyline that will keep you guessing until the end. The small town of Deception Cove with its small town gossip machines provided the perfect setting for this mystery with plenty of red herrings for us to follow. I really liked both MCs and liked how their relationship and attraction grew and developed throughout the story. Well written and interesting storyline that definitely had you hooked to the end between the spies, betrayals, and secrets. I've been a long term Toni Anderson fan and she hasn't let me down yet! Can't wait for the next book, I'm really hoping it's Cowboy and he get's the torturing he deserves, lol!
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. We’re already three books onto the series and Anderson just upped the suspense/thrill another notch. Twists and turns you never saw coming are headed your way. Brynn and Grady slowly fall for each other while neather of them knows the whole truth. A few flashbacks into Eli Kane‘s past give you a little background about him as well and then it’s still just barely enough time before everything comes crashing down, decade old secrets getting revealed and an incapable and presumptuous sheriff gets handled… a great Story that also indicates into cowboys past and the sadness he hides. Fabulous.
ARC Review of Cold Snap by Toni Anderson * * * * * Another fantastic addition to this dark romance series as it had me staying up late into the night wanting to know what happens next!
Grady loved his job and worked hard to get where he is now...until he is 'persuaded' an assignment that is both insane and could cost him the career he loves. He has been asked to hunt down a man that the world has been looking for over twenty years, and somehow...he's landed in his home town. The home town he left behind to forget what people saw him as. Now he is back and dealing with trouble. A town filled with people that see him as his father. A sheriff who holds a nast grudge. A particularly cranky sister who has gone behind his back. Then there was Brynn. Taking some time to assist her parents back in her home town - and run away from the embarrassment that is her love life, Brynn is now having to deal with being part of an investigation after finding a dead body with the assistance of former town bad boy Grady Steel. Something is happening in their little town. More deaths. Secrets. Then there is the bubbling attraction between Grady and herself. Thrilling.
All the drama is so good! This author has just handed some cold hard stuff straight from Criminal Minds and given it some extra sizzle. Plus, not to forget some puppy cuteness. So many people I want to punch on behalf of these two! Grady has worked so hard and is now having to deal with all the crud behind thrown at him, facing people he particularly doesn't want to and having insults thrown his way. To keep his mouth shut on top of it is painful! Results me dear, end results make it all worth it.
Wow, just wow! This book was incredible. The bad guy in this book was dark and gave me the creepy crawlies. They never are great, but this one just hit differently. The story kept me guessing and trying to figure out what was going to happen next, but Toni is amazing at weaving these stories that you never quite know what to expect! How Grady ends up going back to the small town he grew up in, to how he meets Brynn gave us the perfect amount of romance. I loved the vulnerability Grady showed toward Brynn. It made him not just a FBI agent but a real person. I cannot say enough good things about this book. I loved every second of it and I will always be anxious to get my hands on whatever Toni has next for us! By far, it's one of my favourite reads of the year!
Another amazing book by Toni, I loved every page! This had a small town romantic suspense theme and had me hooked! Grady was a fantastic character, how his town couldn’t appreciate him I couldn’t understand. Brynn had such a good heart and completely was there for Grady, she had faith in him. The story kept me so entertained and the momentum continued throughout the book. The suspense part was brilliant I loved it! Great to see more of the team in the book and intrigued to see what will be next! I loved Cowboy so hoping it’s his and maybe Donnelly’s story? Another 5 star read from Toni and this book I think is on my top 3 by Toni, loved it!
I absolutely enjoyed reading this story! Grady and Brynn were a wonderful delight to get to know and I loved reading how their releationship blossomed. The plot of the story was really good, and at about the 40% mark, I guessed who Eli Kane was. HA! I'm happy to know that my guess was correct!
The storyline, writing, and character development were amazing!
Toni doesn’t disappoint once again! I started reading my advance copy yesterday afternoon and finished 0400hrs this morning ! I just couldn’t put it down , I had to know who was Eli Kane . One minute you think you know who he is and then there’s another twist and you’re second guessing yourself. Now I’m sorry I reached the end. 🥹 Toni’s writing style and likeable characters draw you in. Can’t wait for the next one ! P.S Cowboy better be grovelling for forgiveness!!
Oh my goodness!!! What to say? This is the best book of the series! A woman who's been hurt and a man who is considered no good by his hometown. Plenty of action. Suspense. Sex. Secrets. Be sure to have tissues at the end. I cried. Brynn has returned to her hometown because he mother has cancer and needs her to run her little cafe. Her ex took all their money and left her for another woman. Brynn is renting the basement of a house that belongs to a HRT agent with the FBI but his sister has been renting it out. Grady is a HRT agent and agents come into a meeting and arrest him. He was a hellion when he was younger he lived with his grandmother after his mom died. His father was a brute and went to jail. He goes undercover in his hometown when it's discovered that a FBI most wanted man is living there. The man was a FBI agent and killed his wife and sons twenty some years ago and has been on the run since. Grady befriends Brynn hoping to find the ex agent but what neither expects is to fall in love. When Brynn finds out Grady has been lying will she forgive him? * Voluntarily read and reviewed for the author *
I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.Cold Snap by Toni Anderson is the third standalone novel in her Cold Justice: Most Wanted series. In this installment, Anderson delivered a tale where the suspense will have you breathless and the romance will warm your heart.
This installment gives us Grady Steel and Brynn Webster’s story. Both grew up in Deception Cove and they left the first chance they got. Both are doing well in their respective careers. Grady as an FBI agent, and Brynn as a graphic designer. They had no plans to return home, but fate had other ideas. Brynn returned home to operate her parents’ café, as her mom had fallen ill. Grady returned for an undercover assignment. An assignment involving former FBI agent Eli Kane, who has been on the FBI’s most wanted list for over two decades.
Cold Snap embodied all the things one looks for in a solid romantic suspense. A mystery to keep one turning the pages, suspense which keeps one on the edge of their seats and a steamy and heartfelt romance. From the first page, I knew I was in for a treat and the story did not disappoint. Tension, drama, danger and intrigue permeated the pages of Cold Snap.
Grady tries to maintain cover while dealing with hostility from the citizens of Deception Cove. Most of whom refuse to see beyond his troubled past. The hostility was so bad they blamed him for a murder which occurred the moment he returned home. However, the hostility is not the only conflict he faces. He also struggled with his attraction to Brynn. He knew he needed to remain focused on the investigation and not allow his feelings to become a hindrance, but this would prove a challenge.
I enjoyed the romance and loved how Grady and Brynn’s relationship developed. Having been hurt in the past, Brynn was wary of getting involved with Grady. Despite not knowing the real reason for his return to Deception Cove, she knew his stay was temporary, and she feared risking her heart. Grady was unsure of his ability to love. Seeing them overcome their fear and embracing their feelings was a heartening experience.
Learning the reason for Kane landing on the FBIs most wanted list made for a compelling read. The man is dangerous and there is no justification for his actions. Cold-blooded to the core, he had no qualms with killing anyone he perceives a threat. Throughout the story, I attempted to figure out his identity as there were many suspects, but it was not an easy task. The revelation of his identity along with other reveals left me speechless.
Now I was quite happy to see a particular person receive his comeuppance. He abused his power and wasn’t particularly good at his job.
I've given this a B+ for narration and a B for content at AudioGals.
Toni Anderson is one of my favourite romantic suspense authors, and I’ve been looking forward to listening to Cold Snap, the third book in her Cold Justice: Most Wanted series. It’s a complex and twisty story that sees a member of the elite HRT (Hostage Rescue Team) returns to his small home-town on the trail of one of the Bureau’s most wanted fugitives.
Special Agent Grady Steel has worked hard to leave behind the Bad Boy moniker he earned when he was a rebellious teen in his home town of Deception Cove, Maine. Brought up by his grandmother after his arsehole of a father went to prison, Grady rarely returns home; in fact, he hasn’t been back since his grandmother’s funeral eight years earlier, and has no desire to return. But the bureau has received intel – in the form of a fingerprint lifted after a robbery at the town bank – that one of their Most Wanted might be hiding out there, and wants Grady to go undercover – as himself – to gather information which might help them apprehend Eli Kane, a former FBI agent wanted for the murders of his wife and children. The cover story to explain Grady’s sudden reappearance – he’s temporarily suspended over an accusation that he committed a hit and run – is one that many of the townsfolk who remember him as a teenaged tearaway are likely to believe and will hopefully blind Kane to Grady’s true purpose.
Brynn Webster runs a successful graphic design business in Boston, but has returned home to Deception Cove to help her parents run their popular sea-front café as her mother battles cancer. Being back home brings mixed feelings; she loves the town, but the town busybodies? Not so much. Even though the divorce she sought after her husband abandoned her for another woman was two years ago, the whispers and gossip continue to dog her. After a long day at the café, she’s on her way back to her rented basement apartment when she sees something breaking the surface of the water of the nearby river – then realises it’s not a something, it’s a someone. Stripping off quickly, she dives into the icy water and calls for help as she hauls the body back to shore; then there’s a man at her side, helping her to get it out of the water. The stranger looks vaguely familiar, but before she can ponder on that more, she realises that the man in the water is – or was – the manager of the local bank, the same bank which had been robbed weeks earlier.
After this rather unfortunate – and chilly – meet-cute, Grady decides that perhaps getting to know Brynn could prove useful. The pull of attraction Grady feels towards her is inconvenient, but he’s not in the market for a relationship – or even a hook-up; he’s there to do a job and is determined to stay focused.
Brynn’s confidence and ability to trust took a real hit when her husband dumped her, and she hasn’t experienced the faintest spark of attraction towards anyone in years… but there’s something about Grady Steel that awakens her libido and starts her thinking that maybe a few bouts of wild, monkey sex with a hot guy who isn’t staying around might be just the thing she needs.
The author does a good job here of depicting the almost claustrophobic atmosphere of a small town where everyone knows your name and your business. There are those who are all too ready to believe the worst of Grady – including his former buddy – now Sheriff – Darrell York, who is clearly jealous of Grady’s success, is only to pleased to learn of his ‘suspension’ and is quick to suspect him of murder. The story moves fairly slowly in the first half, and I have to be honest and say I found it too slow until after the halfway point. I appreciated the time given to developing the relationship between Grady and Brynn – which begins as a friendship that simmers with an undercurrent of mutual attraction – and to developing the characters and dynamics, but the mystery/suspense plot doesn’t really kick into gear until well into the second half of the book, and the first half drags in places.
I liked the two leads. You can really feel Grady’s apprehension at being back in a place that is unlikely to welcome him, and how hard it is for him to have to play a role that isn’t who he is any more. Brynn is dealing with a lot as well; not only is her mother terminally ill, Brynn is still smarting from her husband’s sudden abandonment and even though she’s attracted to Grady, getting involved with someone who might not be on the up-and-up isn’t the best idea. As they become closer, the harder it becomes for Grady to lie to Brynn – but he’s starting to build a picture of just who and where Kane might be, and can’t afford for Brynn to get caught up in the crossfire.
One thing that really impressed me is the way the author presents Eli Kane. His crime was heinous, and I won’t give anything away here (we do get a few chapters from his PoV here and there, which explain more of the backstory) but Ms. Anderson makes him into a complex character rather than a cartoon villain, explaining his – incredibly flawed – motives and making him… not exactly sympathetic, but understandable. The reveal, when it comes, is a shocker (although I had my suspicions beforehand), and the finale is real edge-of-the-seat stuff.
I’ve listened to Eric G. Dove in a number of Toni Anderson’s books, so I went into Cold Snap knowing I’d be listening to another entertaining and accomplished performance. The narration is well-paced and clearly differentiated; Mr. Dove uses a variety of pitch and accent to voice a fairly large cast, and there’s no confusion as to who is speaking during multi-character interactions. The bit of gravel in his voice works well for portraying badass heroes, and I liked the slight drawl he gives to Ryan/Cowboy (who I imagine will be one of the leads in the next book), and his female voices are good, too, appropriately feminine but not falsetto or pitched too high. Mr. Dove does a great job with the emotional content of the story, too, and is really good at ratcheting up the tension, whether it’s in action scenes or romantic ones.
Toni Anderson writes clever, intricately-plotted stories; her heroes are alphas without being alphaholes and her heroines are plucky and resourceful, the villains are easy to want to see the back of, and she creates a great sense of camaraderie between the various members of the HRT. But somehow – and looking at the ratings on Amazon and Goodreads, I can see I’m in a minority – Cold Snap didn’t work as well for me as I’d hoped, principally because I really struggled with the slow pacing in the first half of the book. But I freely admit that this is probably a ‘me’ thing and not a ‘book’ thing, so don’t let that put you off giving this one a try!
Wow! So many twists and turns and unexpected moments had me reading on the edge of my seat. I think I actually gasped a time or two while thinking, "I so didn't see that coming". Anderson is definitely at the top of her writing game with this romantic suspense. I couldn't put it down.
Many thanks to the author and BookFunnel for an advance copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias or favor or expectation.
This is such a fantastic book and I couldn’t stop reading. What a journey, I loved the suspense level. Grady is in an undercover mission to find one of the F.B.I.’s most wanted fugitives. But he can’t help falling for Brynn, even though he’s afraid she’ll think he used her. This plot was so crazy, and I was so shocked! Did not see this coming at all. I was blown away. We do get multiple points of view and I was still so surprised. I even cried for the heartbreak Grady and Brynn go through. Thankfully they finally get a happy ever after. This book is worth re reading. I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy and I highly recommend this book. I read a lot and so far this is one of my faves.
Cold Snap is full of suspense, a sexy hero and a beautiful heroine. In my opinion, the perfect trifecta! Toni Anderson did it yet again by creating a story I could not put down until I had read every page. From the very first chapter, I was engaged in the story, the plot. Her characters and scenes are so well developed, you feel as though you are present in each one. I kept guessing who the killer really was and was completely surprised. She had me in tears as I read Chapters 58 through 63. I felt the emotions of the characters as if they were my own family and friends. Toni Anderson is one of my very few “must buy her books” authors and she has never disappointed me with her stories. This one was no different. It definitely left me wanting more, wanting another installment. I highly recommend Cold Snap.
Was so excited about this one because Cold Deceit had me hooked but I didn’t enjoy this one as much sadly. It was still interesting but I felt like the story was being stretched out unnecessarily at times.
Cold Snap: Cold Justice by Toni Anderson is another fast paced nail biting story set in this FBI Romantic Thriller series. Grady’s story doesn’t disappoint & kept me up reading waay too late. I received an advanced reader’s copy of this ebook & highly recommend reading.
Another great thrill a minute read from Toni Anderson. She sucks the reader in and keeps you turning pages late into the night with twists and turns and heated encounters. Totally recommend!
