Rate this book
“A fast, fun, satisfying mystery told by a master of sarcasm and wit.” “A BIRD’S EYE VIEW OF MURDER dishes more of Vick’s signature sarcasm, wit, and humor.” What’s a pet psychic’s worst nightmare? A tarot card-reading aunt, a cranky cockatoo, and a very dead Blue-Ribbon Queen.

Pet psychic Frankie Chandler is feeling frazzled. Ever since the night she lost her ability to communicate with animals--and wound up reading the minds of two potential dates--nothing seems to be going right. Her new animal behavior business is a dud, and her love life is as dry as the Arizona desert. To top it off, Frankie's assertive Aunt Gertrude is in town to attend the premiere of Blue-Ribbon Babes, the Baking Channel's latest show.

When Frankie and Auntie stumble over the body of the newly appointed Blue-Ribbon Queen, Detective Martin Bowers suspects that Auntie knows more about the victim than she's admitting. The only witness to the murder is an unfriendly cockatoo that's obsessed with cats. Frankie scrambles to revive her talent for talking to animals before the police arrest Aunt Gertrude, but the more she finds out about the victim, the more she wonders if Auntie is guilty.

Mystery meets romance in this comedic romp through the minds of furry and feathered friends.

Jacqueline Vick writes mysteries that include farcical situations and satirical humor. She writes about characters who are reluctant to accept their greatest (and often embarrassing) gifts.

She is the author of THE FRANKIE CHANDLER PET PSYCHIC MYSTERIES about a woman who, after faking her psychic abilities for years, discovers animals can communicate with her. The series evolved out of her desperate attempts to train a rescued mutt with fear-based aggression. Two visits with animal communicators inspired the article Calling All Canine Clairvoyants for Fido Friendly Magazine.

Her second series is THE HARLOW BROTHER MYSTERIES, featuring brothers Edward and Nicholas Harlow. Edward, a former college linebacker, now ghost writes the Aunt Civility etiquette books. Nicholas is his secretary and general dogsbody.

Her first mystery, Family Matters, was a semifinalist in the 2009 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Competition. Her short stories have appeared in numerous publications, including Future Mystery Anthology Magazine and The Best of Everyday Fiction Two Anthology. Her novella, Lovely As, was a finalist for the Black Orchid Novella Contest.

When she isn’t writing, Jacqueline enjoys acting as the neighborhood dog sitter and testing new recipes on her long-suffering husband.

Frankie Chandler’s hardly recovered from the murder she got involved in the month before when her aunt comes for a visit. The aunt has scored some tickets to the taping of a live baking show, and Frankie joins her. That’s how Frankie stumbles on the dead body of the contestant winner. With the police looking at her aunt, her aunt hiding secrets, and animals starting to talk to Frankie again, can she figure out what is really going on?

Yes, this book falls into the paranormal cozy subgenre, which I tend to avoid. I appreciated how Frankie wrestles with her gift and what it means since those are the same things I struggle with myself. And it’s a minor part of the book anyway. In fact, this is more comedic, at least to me. I enjoyed laughing at the antics of the characters as the book progressed. The story started a bit slowly, but it grew stronger as it went along, and I was surprised by the ending. Do keep in mind that there is some violence to animals, but they are treated no worse than the human characters in the story. I really enjoyed the characters. I’m hoping I can get to the next in the series soon.

This was a fun book. The sleuth, Frankie Chandler, is an animal psychic and, in A Bird's Eye View of Murder, even sees animals who are no longer alive. The death connection seemed to be a new skill she picked up in the series. I'm not sure because this is the first of Vick's pet psychic books I've read. I know the protagonist, Frankie, did not like finding out she could connect with animals in the afterlife. The book reminded me a little of Barbara Allen's books in her series with Brandy as the protagonist who has a nice ex-husband, a son, and a loony mom named Vivian. Jacqueline Vick's book is a humorous cozy murder mystery, with the complicated twists and turns needed for the reader to be surprised by who "really" did it.

Jaqueline Vick wrote another enjoyable read in her Frankie Chandler series. This is the second book I've read in this series and I'm looking forward to starting book#3 in the series very soon.

The characters are very interesting and quirky. Of course, Frankie's psychic powers are interesting to read about and I enjoy the characters' interactions. The plot isn't one that I was able to figure out ahead of time, though I'm not much of a sleuth. I find the vocabulary refreshingly clean and the relationships are spicy enough without being disappointing.

So, if a reader wants a nice, entertaining, witty, and clean mystery, the series, and this book included, is for them.

Poor Frankie

Attending a baking show with her Aunt leads to finding a body, someone her Aunt knew a long time ago. Someone her Aunt had an altercation with that leads to her being a prime suspect in the murder. When someone else dies and the pet that Frankie had hopes would give her a clue to the killer, she unknowingly puts herself in the path of the murderer.

This one took a bit to solve but not until the killer literally had her cornered and fighting for her life. Thanks to the help of a ghostly pet, she just manages to survive long enough for the police to arrive.

Frankie Chandler is learning how to best deal with the Psychic messages she gets from pets. She also accidentally found she could tap into some human minds - those of her dates. Not a welcome talent. When her Aunt Gertrude comes to visit, Frankie has figured out how to close the door on her messages. While at the taping of a cooking show, the contest winner dies on state. The main witness is a pet cockatoo.
The plot gets quite complicated, but ends up being an amusing mystery/romance combo.

Having enjoyed the first book in this series, the bar was set high, but Vick cleared it—and then some. A BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF MURDER dishes more of her signature sarcasm, wit, and humor. Add Petey—a mouthy cockatoo, Aunt Gertrude, a televised cooking show, three contestants pitted against each other—and now one of them's dead. A fun read you'll gobble up in a day!

Nice story, but liked the first in the series better. Frankie lost her pet psychic abilities, which I enjoyed. Slowly they returned in time to help her save the day. It's nice series and good characters. I already have number three An Almost Perfect Murder waiting to be read. Looking for good things.

In general a fun read if you can get past the unlikely scenario of someone bringing their pet bird to a TV show premier. Also got a little preachy on a certain subject toward the end, which I won’t mention to avoid giving anything away.

School of Hard Knocks

Finally, Frankie is growing up! Your past will catch up to you. It should be revealed to the ones who matter, but that is an individual decision to make and bear.
Looking forward to book 3.
