Werewolves under the moon. City boys forced to accept their wilder side. Primal danger. The Call anthology has all this and more. Three stories give us an inside view of the life of the wolf. Jourdan Lane, author of the popular Soul Mates series, gives us Instinct. Construction worker Ethan hates being a werewolf. He hates the man who made him what he is. When he meets Noah, he finds a fellow wolf who wants his help, and his body. Can he open up to Noah enough to put aside his fear? And what happens when the man who turned him wants him back? Emily Veinglory pairs the small town werewolf Nate with the city boy Steven. When Steven's car breaks down at Nate's gas station, Nate figures he's found something worth keeping. He has secrets, though, and he might be too wild for the sophisticated Steven. Can he juggle his past and make a new life? From BA Tortuga comes Home Fires, the story of Houston, who escapes torturous captivity to return to his mate, Jackson. Jackson welcomes Houston back to their remote New Mexico home, and sets about healing Houston, body and soul. Can they remove the scars that Houston can't hide? And can the two wolves escape the ghosts of the past when they come looking. Run with this anthology today!

This was a good collection of werewolf tales. Good authors delivering very nice writing.
Instinct by Jourdan Lane was the weakest story, but still okay. There was good sex, but other than that, the story seemed half-told. Nothing ever really gets going or resolves. Not bad, but not gripping.
Son of a Bitch by Emily Veinglory, I thought, was the best of the book. Veinglory draws excellent characters, filling them to the brim with their distinct life force. Her characters are always down to earth and just easy to know and follow along with. Best scene was the fight scene. Really well done, good tension and drama.
Home Fires by B.A. Tortuga was the most interesting. This is written in a true short-story style with things satisfyingly left unknown and not explored. The emotion between the two characters very real and intense. The sex got a bit too much, with them dropping trou in nearly every scene, so I ended up skimming a bit of the story. Also, I'm not a fan of the caveman dialogue during sex, so that kind of irked me a bit. But it was still pretty good and I would only hope that Tortuga either did or will create a real novel out of the backstory and future story here. I think that would be an awesome read. With maybe about 50% less sex and 30% more full sentences in the dialogue, I hope.
1. At the moment of buying it's was not mark that it's part of a series. Series that I didn't read. First time having sex in X time and no lube, no stretching? Wow! "So, If I were to tell you that I'm already falling hard for you..." They know each other for less than five years. So much had changed since Noah had waltzed into my life. Yeah, only last night. We may never know the answer to some of those questions. Ho yeah, the easy road to not answer our question. Everything else was just details. That's it?! That's how the writer chose to finish the story?! I feel cheated.
2. Better that the first one but not that much. First sex scene. No prep. Other sex scene, the guy just admit he don't bottom often and bam, no prep too. With a crack the weakened safety glass collapsed into thousand of tiny squares of glass and they fell back through it together. What? A safety glass that broke that easily? Sue the company, it's defect.
3. Abus of sex, of the word 'mine', 'mate', 'yours'. Not very good.

All the story in this anthology are about werewolfes and pack. Two lovers can be a pack? and can you live being a werewolf withot the shelter of a strong pack around you? two hearts and a cabin can be right for shapeshifters?
Instinct by Jourdan Lane: Jack has been turned in a terrible way, by an evil alpha male who now continues to torment him. And then he meets Noah, a gentle werewolf, who wants to prove to Jack that pack is not always a bad thing. Jack and Noah are balancing mate, noone of them is an alpha male, in a real and huge pack, maybe they would be beta male.
Son of a Bitch by Emily Veinglory: Nate is a lone wolf. He was banished from his pack cause he wanted to change the rules, wanted the modern world lead the pack to a new era. And now he has a shitty life in a rural small town. And then arrives Steven, city boy banished himself for different reason. They find each other, but Nate needs to free his wolf. He can't live continuing to hide that side of his soul. But Steven, and not only him, is ready to help and support him.
Home Fires by BA Tortuga: Houston has freed himself from a cage. He was taken prisoner by the army who wants to create a new powerful soldier able to shift. And now he has only a place to go back: the arms of his mate, Jackson. He has left him in a youthful attempt to find something more, but now he knows that with his lover he has all he needs.
It's not easy to say what is the best among this stories: they are all pretty good. Not funny, not at all, they have a common path of angst and of love which helps healing the wounds. A very good shapeshifter anthology for who loves this genre.
I liked this short story, and I’m eager to read more about the mean and evil Jake. The local farmers are noticing bigger than normal wolf tracks. The thing isn’t the size but that wolves haven’t been around for a while. It’s suspicious. Ethan is a werewolf, (I guess you could say he is a closeted were), who doesn’t like his wolf. He’s scared of his wolf and doesn’t trust it, so he keeps it from those around him. When Noah Weber walks into his office to hire him for a job, he is not only surprised but pleased too, to find out that Noah wants only him and not his crew to do the job. (Who knew that you could do that with honey!) It will be Noah’s challenge to get Ethan to see that they are meant to be together. Ethan is uncomfortable about being in a pack, because he has always been on his own, and because of the things that happened when he was with Jake. In addition to facing his fears of being part of a pack, and following his instincts instead of fighting his wolf, he must also win over the suspicious members of the pack. As soon as Ethan and Jake smooth things out not only between them but with the pack too, the pack is betrayed by one of their own and they are forced escape the mountain top. Who will make it out alive, and who is the traitor loyal to Jake?
Three novellas/short stories about werewolves: Instinct: Jourdan Lane. The blurb on Amazon for this one didn't really match the story. It's about a construction worker, Ethan, who's also a werewolf but prefers working in the city and avoiding his own kind. He is hired by Noah to work on Noah's pack's home which is very much out in the country. This one felt like it should have been part of a series - I enjoyed it enough that I'll look up other stories by this author, and I'm hoping there's a sequel out there. 4/5
Son of a Bitch: Emily Veinglory. I really liked this story - Nate was funny and loveable and the setting was different and original. The other characters were also great - I loved Nate's mum and Li-Ling, the Taiwanese lady running an Irish themed pub... My only wish is that it was longer. 5/5
Home Fires: BA Tortuga. Houston has escaped from a cage and made his way back to his lover, Jackson. They work on healing Houston. I did enjoy this one although I wish there'd been a little more plot and a little less sex. Again I'm hoping there's a sequel - I'd like a little more resolution on this one. 4/5
I love werewolves and this anthology has all it takes to be a classic for gay shifter fans. There are only three stories and each are about 100 pages each, so they don't end up abruptly, though they can leave you wanting more. The fist story is about a were who has been turned against his will by a violent (and crazy) alpha. He is has been living as a human ever since, trying to repress his wild side, fearing it and being somewhat disgusted by it. The crazy alpha ex-boyfried is still stalking him from time to time so he's always on guard. In comes hunky were from another pack, asking for some help with some construction, and sparks fly. The story gets more complicated from here and it ends in a way that leaves the door open for a sequel. The second story was my favorite. Every character was unique and interesting and overall the main characters where very cute and rather shy. I have to admit I didn't finish the last story, but I will probably come back to it. Its beginning was too sad for my current mood, so I didn't continue it :P
This is a book that the author has listed as part of the Soul Mates series, but really, there aren't any characters we've ever met before and so far, I've never seen them again. Ethan is a construction worker and a lone werewolf. He has denied the advances of Jake, the alpha that turned him in a most violent way and avoids others of his kind at all costs. Noah needs some repairs done on the pack's house and goes to Ethan for the work. When they meet, the chemistry is undeniable. However Jake seems to be possessive of his property and to him Ethan is his property.
It's a good story and as it ends it seems these two will be heading off to joining Lucien and Peter's coven in Texas, so I hope we see them there, or at least get the rest of their story because it doesn't feel complete. 3.5 stars
I liked Instinct, but didn't really see the connection to the Soul Mates series. I felt like it stopped rather abruptly and am hoping there is a continuation of it in another book/series/anthology.
When I started it, I didn't think I was going to like Son of a Bitch, but it (Nate) quickly grew on me and ended up being my favorite story in the book.
Home Fires was my least favorite in the book. It was a little slow and the sex got very repetitive with little character development to go along with it.
(I only read Jourdan Lane's story, because at the moment I follow only her series.) So-so. It's not that bad, and the story of the two main characters is very nice. But to me, it not seems a short-story. It's all out of context, it has not a background. It looks like more a piece of some other book, that was cut off. And may be it was, because I started to read the fourth book of the series, and the story of the two of them continues there.
A great variety of wolf-shifter stories. Hard to pick which I liked the most, but it would have to be Jourdan Lane's Instinct. Rob Knight and Emily Veinglory are new-to-me authors, and I will definitely check out more of their work.
**** for the first story: Instinct by Jourdan Lane *** for the second story: Son of a Bitch by Emily Veinglory ** for the last story: Home Fires by B.A. Tortuga
