Wanting to make model sermons more accessible to students, teachers, and pastors, Long and Plantinga have compiled this anthology of mostly contemporary sermons that display excellence in form, aim, style, and content, Developed and delivered by renowned pastors, theologians, and homileticians, the thirty-six superb entries in this volume include sermons that make artful use of their sources, that pursue classic aims, that exhibit particular homiletic forms, and that are suited to special occasions.
This was assigned as a textbook for my preaching class and I barely read it. Since graduating, I picked it up both to read it to get a greater understanding of what makes a good sermon, but also to be intellectually and devotionally stimulated. I find that the book does both very well. I did not enjoy all of the sermons in the book, but I did really enjoy at least 80% and now am interested in picking up similar books to continue spurring my mind and heart in this manner.
Great resource for preachers to observe and study different ways of engaging the biblical text!!! I would love to read a follow up text using other progressive preachers grounded in scripture.
