Grant Steele is an exiled employee of a vigilante organization gone rogue. Since his ousting, his sole purpose has been to kill those who murdered the organization’s founder—even if that means killing the founder’s daughter, Gemma, should she hold blame.Because Gemma can determine lies when someone speaks, the new head of the organization, Syra Villano, maintains a clamp on Gemma’s life. So much so that everyone believes Gemma’s involved in and responsible for the criminal activity. When Grant returns, Syra orders employees to attack and “discipline” Gemma. Grant intervenes and takes Gemma into hiding. In taking her, he hopes to get the answers he needs to help him decide who lives and dies when he takes the organization down—and whether Gemma should be numbered among the dead. However, in guarding Gemma, he and his partner are in a fight for their lives. They all soon learn, though, that none of their strongholds are safe, and Grant knows that if he were to survive this, he wouldn’t want to without Gemma.
I don't know what these ridiculous low star reviews are all about. I thought the book was amazing! It's intelligent, well written, and explores a unique plot line that kept me on the edge of my seat. Yes it's a long book, but I honestly wish it was longer as I didn't want to say goodbye to the characters. Lucky for me, it's only the first in a trilogy! Just read it!
I completely disagree with the premise of this book. In fact, I hate what the characters stand for. And yet I couldn’t put it down! This would make a great series.
The book does leave some questions unanswered.
Searching for answers following her father’s death, Gemma joins his underground organization to remove society’s worst offenders from the streets. The organization has been corrupted under the leadership of her aunt and Gemma is isolated and abused. With help from her father’s former partners she will try to take down the organization.
Considering this is a plan that I have often wished I could make happen...this book serves as a solid cautionary tale about how this seedling of an idea would most likely end up. I too was sad to say goodbye to these friends. Turning this into series wouldn't make me sad. :)
Stranglehold had me hooked from the start. There is nothing I love more than an unpredictable plot and this book did not disappoint. The story Jones weaves has so many layers that interweave and twist in the most spectacular way. The characters are multidimensional, complex, real people. And nothing had scratched my itch for justice, action, and faith in true heroes quite like Stranglehold. Read this book!
I received an ARC of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I think this book is far more romance than mystery/thriller. Romance fans may love the book, so I don’t want to submit a negative review because I dislike the entire genre. Not my cup of tea.
