Perry and Ironside include considerable history in this quick reading book with plenty of interesting pictures highlighting the formation and history of Israel as a nation. The roles of David Ben-Gurion, Theodor Herzl, Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres, Menachem Begin, Golda Meir, and so many more who helped the formation of this great nation were mentioned. I do wish there was even more discussion on how this country was formed from dessert in an amazing way.

The conflicts of immigration from different nations, the control of the UK over the area and immigration, the unusual relationship with Germany and the decision to accept reparations from Germany, using austerity rationing to build the country, the movement from a European to a more international country, the change from a socialist country to market driven, the language choice, the leadership styles of various prime ministers, and the building dynamics between Arab states and Israel were all covered in this fast-moving book.

As someone who will finally visit Israel next year and learned, as my mom had long thought, was a small part Ashkenazi Jew, I enjoyed reading a book that highlighted how the Ashkenazi established had a major impact on the culture first created in Israel. As much as the book mentioned the sacrifices made by people forming Israel, it didn’t fully get that point across in my opinion. But it is a quick reading book with considerable information allowing the reader to get a good understanding of this complicated country.
