Tiny Tragedies - The Sundry Files: An Alt World Book

Rate this book
After years of abuse, Sundry is rescued and brought into a world she didn't know existed; a world that is both enticing and dangerous. Not only does she find out vampires, were's, fairies, and others exist in a world called Alt, but she happens to be one herself, and has an Ability to prove it. After being rescued from her kidnappers, she finds out that she has multiple personalities—literally. There are remnants of Sundry out in the world living their lives separately from her. Now it's up to Sundry and her sponsor—and sex-friend—Jordan, to locate and reunite them with Sundry. There has never been an Alt like Sundry, and no one knows what to expect when she reunites with her remnants. Sundry has never been able to live in the human world. Can she survive in the Alt world?

Laila Raimes grew up in the Bronx and moved to upstate NY for her last year of high school-according to her: It sucked!! She now lives in upstate NY with her 11 year old son.

Laila is a little known paranormal erotic/romance hybrid author. Hybrid because I have one series that is traditionally published, and four books that are self-published. I write about strong heroines who have lived through or experienced something horrible from abuse whether physical, sexual, or emotional, to depression, but fight, struggle and conquer it all, in a paranormal erotica/romance setting.

Some of her works are deep or considered controversial--the Alt World Series--as they delve in detail into abuse, whereas others are meant to be lighthearted and just fun. She also has a series that is in-between.

She's sarcastic funny & her family thinks she's crazy for several reasons, but most recently because she told them the best chip to use as a weapon when ninja stars are unavailable are Lays potato chips--original of course. According to her, "They're as thin as razors." Who can argue with that logic?

Her favorite phrases are "Oh snap & Word," and her favorite hair color is blue/black.

She hopes you enjoy her works and sincerely appreciates the time you take to leave a review. (More so if you enjoyed her work than if you didn't ;)

When I started this book the least I was expecting was me giving it five full stars, but here I am yelling HELL NO at this cliffhanger. And I am being very honest here, if it wasn't for the bumpy, slightly chaotic start you would have seen Hiddles saying "Epic" where the gif for the star rating is.

fuck yes

This book has it all: an intriguing paranormal world setting, a self-conscious, ever developing female lead, a gentle but fierce protector, a lot of hot sex - though I don't understand Sundry's Adam's apple fetish - a tragic history and a suspenseful future.

thumbs up

There isn't much else to say without spoiling the fun. Laila Raimes writing style is smart, fun and fierce, her characters diverse and likable. Sundy is a heroine that survived a gruesome fate and still stands strong and self-aware. Damn, I wouldn't want to be on her bad side even without her unique powers. That's a woman I'd like to have as a best friend.

hearteyes

So, with no further ado: well deserved five stars.
I want the sequel. NOW!

First a bit of housekeeping: A shout out to Laila for giving me the opportunity to read her book as an ARC and Melissa Snark for sending out a newsletter (the Snarkology) with ARC books.

Now the book, well what can I say but interesting.... very interesting!
but be warned this book does contain the serious issue of sexual abuse of a child as well as scenes of a sexual nature so this is not for the faint hearted.

This book is difficult to review because you run the risk of giving the story line away, but I would recommend this book who can look past all the sex and enjoy thinking about the psychology of characters behaviour and what drives them.
Many readers of my generation and older will remember Sybil and this book very much plays on this theme just with a paranormal twist which I really enjoyed. Tiny Tragedies - for our main character Sundry, is the understatement of the century, with every page screaming her pain in every thought and behaviour choice, which is by no stretch of the imagination healthy. I can't say how much I am looking forward to the next book especially after that great twist at the end. Laila what can I say but a great book - You go girl.

I was gifted a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with this book. It hooked me from the first sentence. Please be aware that there are some harsh elements touched that include sexual abuse so it may be a trigger for some. Also be forewarned that ends in a major a cliff hanger. But oh so worth it!

Sundry was kidnapped at the tender age of seven. From seven to eighteen she was kept hidden in a basement and used sexually in the most horrible and debasing ways possible. As a result her soul split with each major event and formed an alternate personality of herself. An actual breathing human sent out into the world to await her return for them. By the time she is rescued she is just a shell of herself.

When the ABI (Alternative Bureau of Investigation) claims her as one of their own she feels like maybe she finally has a chance at becoming normal again. What she doesn't realize is the pain she will have to relive as she comes in contact and claims each of her "alts". But there are people high up in the ABI keeping secrets and Sundry is right smack in the middle of them.

Along with her partner Jordan she fights to reclaim herself in every way possible.

I absolutely loved this book and the way that the author took a sensitive topic and made you feel Sundry's emotions throughout the entire book. I was happy that even though it had a sci fi feel to it that it wasn't overrun with so many technical terms that would normally turn me completely off a book. Sundry is such a contradiction in every sense of the word. She is feisty and has a dominant personality but there are times that her vulnerability really came thru.

Can't wait to see where this new series leads!

Jennifer was kidnapped at the age of seven and held until she was rescued at eighteen. The emotional, physical and sexual abuse she suffered made her soul spit into different people. Hired by the ABI and now known as Sundry, she is thrown into a world she never knew existed. Jordan her sponsor is supposed to train her, get her ready to become an agent. In the mean time they are searching for the missing parts of her soul to help reunite them and make her a whole person again. After finding the first remnant, they are melded back together. But ABI wants her to bring the remnants in before they are melded. They want to do tests on her and them first.

I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the book or not. I am more into romance, but this book sucked me in. I loved Jordan, and felt that a relationship between him and Sundry would go far. As soon as she let herself open up from her past. There was plenty of sex scenes and most of them are pretty hot. For someone that had been abused like she was, she doesn't have a problem having sex with anyone that turns her on. I was still rooting for Jordan. I was happy as Sundry started to find more remnants of herself and started to come back together. Then the author bursts my bubble and the book ended on a major cliffhanger. I was so involved and not paying attention to the percentage left, next thing I knew the book was over and I was left heartbroken. Wonderful read for lovers of paranormal. Now I need the next book.

***4.5 Stars***

(This is a book that touches on sexual abuse and should be read with caution.)

I was hooked on this book from the first page. I don't like to give spoilers, so I will try and be cautious...
This is about a girl that was abducted at an extremely young age and thrown into a cruel life of sexual slavery. Sundry (aka Jennifer) did not grow up like most other young girls do, with her parents and a loving family. What she had was far worse. Thankfully, some ten years or so later, she did get free from that.
Due to what happened to her, Sundry had many personalities that split off from her and were living their own lives separate of her, but they needed to be found so she could hopefully feel normal again. The ABI (Alternative Bureau of Investigations) helps Sundry do just that and they partnered her up with Jordan to go find them.
This book kept me on the edge of my seat and thankfully my kindle was charged because I read it from beginning to end without stopping. It is full of suspense and has some pretty hot sex scenes with too! The Alt world is not something I would normally read, but had no problem following along and understanding what was happening due to the book being well written. Great job Laila Raimes on a well written piece of work.

I was given a free copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. I made no guarantee of a favorable review.

This book is simply outstanding and not a typical read. We meet Jennifer a.k.a Sundry. This young woman was abducted at a very young age and held for years as a sex slave causing her psyche to fracture into multiple remnants that split from her body and live their own lives and all with unique gifts or aspects. Jordan is Sundry's handler and he is crazy about her but understandably she has guards up to protect herself while Jordan himself has been keeping a secret from her.

This book is a suspenseful and intriguing read full of supernatural beings with all sorts of abilities. The graphic sex scenes are intoxicatingly HOT and every turn of the page keeps you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend this gem of a book. As for myself, I look forward to reading more of Laila Raimes books.

I could not put this book down for a second and the ending has me wanting more!! I can't wait to see what is in store for Sundry especially after the end of this book. Sundry is a shell of a person and is trying to find the rest of herself. She has been brought into a world that she she has no idea about. The story line of this book is far above expectation and will leave you desperate for more.

I have to say straight out that there are many mature themes through out ranging from descriptive violence to sexual abusive of a minor. There are spots in the book that cause triggers for some. With that said...
Sundry is an "Alt", one of the many fairies, vampires and weres who live among humans. That is the only thing that makes her ordinary even while surrounded by the supernatural. As a young girl she was kidnapped and tortured. Enduring the abuse for years literally caused her soul to split into multiple people. After being rescued by the "ABI" (Alternative Bureau of Investigation) she and her partner (in more ways then one) Jordan, are tasked with finding each of her personalities. Will she be able to find every bit of herself and become Jennifer again?
This book had me hooked by the first page. Ms Raimes was able to capture the human emotions even while placed in the "inhuman" world. The abuse Sundry experienced is written with an amazing touch, while the action scenes are fast paced enough to keep you interested. The only thing I can complain about is being left with one heck of a cliff hanger.
A definite four our five stars for this book. I'm already stalking Amazon and the authors page for the next book in this series.

Dear Author Laila Raimes - this is to inform you that I just finished your book TINY TRAGEDIES. Although I was thoroughly enraptured with the concept, storyline, character development and sizzling hot sex scenes, I am very upset right now!! How dare you allow me to begin a story that does not go on and on and on? Where is the next book in this series? Why is it not waiting for me, Right Now?
Excuse me ... I have to go somewhere now and try to re-group.

BTW - I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! Parts of this book are dark and even hard to read (they may bother some people with abuse triggers), but it is all handled in a very tasteful manner. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough!

well it was really good. i love paranormal/fantasy/mythical beings. so it had a step up from the beginning. only drawback for me was its not a stand alone adventure and left me hanging. Sundry is mystery to herself and people around her. i don't like giving spoilers or hints. but i will say if you like Kim Harrisons worlds combind with beautiful mind you'll enjoy the story. its different.
