Edilean #3

Scarlet Nights

Rate this book
What if you learned that your fiancé was not who he claimed to be?

Engaged to the charming and seductive Greg Anders, Sara Shaw is happily anticipating her wedding in Edilean, Virginia. The date has been set, the flowers ordered, even her heirloom dress is ready. But just three weeks before the wedding, Greg gets a telephone call during the night and leaves without explanation. Two days later, a man climbs up through a trapdoor in the floor of Sara’s apartment, claiming that he is the brother of her best friend and that he’s moving in. While Mike Newland is indeed telling the truth about his identity, his reason for being there reaches far deeper. He’s an undercover detective, and his assignment is to use Sara to track down a woman who is one of the most notorious criminals in the United States—and also happens to be the mother of the man Sara plans to marry.

Mike thinks the job will be easy—if he can figure out how to make a “good” girl like Sara trust him, that is. But Mike has no idea what this mission has in store for him. He’s worked hard to keep private his connections to Edilean, which date back to his grandmother’s time there in 1941. But as Mike and Sara get to know each other, he can’t help but share secrets about himself that he’s told no one else. And in return, Sara opens up to Mike about things she could never reveal to Greg. As the pair work together to solve two mysteries, their growing love begins to heal each of them in ways they never could have imagined.

Jude Gilliam was born September 20, 1947 in Fairdale, Kentucky. She has a large extended family and is the elder sister of four brothers. She attended Murray State University and received a degree in Art. In 1967, Jude married and took her husband's surname of White, but four years later they divorced. For years, she worked as 5th-grade teacher.

She began writing in 1976, and published her first book, The Enchanted Land (1977) under the name Jude Deveraux. Following the publication of her first novel, she resigned her teaching position. Now, she is the author of 31 New York Times bestsellers.

Jude won readers' hearts with the epic Velvet series, which revolves around the lives of the Montgomery family's irresistible men. Jude's early books are set largely in 15th- and 16th-century England; in them her fierce, impassioned protagonists find themselves in the midst of blood feuds and wars. Her heroines are equally scrappy -- medieval Scarlett O'Haras who often have a low regard for the men who eventually win them over. They're fighters, certainly, but they're also beauties who are preoccupied with survival and family preservation.

Jude has also stepped outside her milieu, with mixed results. Her James River trilogy (River Lady, Lost Lady, and Counterfeit Lady) is set mostly in post-Revolution America; the popular, softer-edged Twin of Fire/Twin of Ice moves to 19th-century Colorado and introduces another hunky-man clan, the Taggerts.

Deveraux manages to evoke a strong and convincing atmosphere for each of her books, but her dialogue and characters are as familiar as a modern-day soap opera's. "Historicals seem to be all I'm capable of," Jude once said in an interview, referring to a now out-of-print attempt at contemporary fiction, 1982's Casa Grande. "I don't want to write family sagas or occult books, and I have no intention of again trying to ruin the contemporary market." Still, Jude did later attempt modern-day romances, such as the lighthearted High Tide (her first murder caper), the contemporary female friendship story The Summerhouse, and the time-traveling Knight in Shining Armor. In fact, with 2002's The Mulberry Tree, Deveraux seems to be getting more comfortable setting stories in the present, which is a good thing, since the fans she won with her historical books are eager to follow her into the future.

Jude married Claude White, who she later divorced in 1993. Around the same time she met Mohammed Montassir with whom she had a son, Sam Alexander Montassir, in 1997. On Oct. 6th, 2005, Sam died at the age of eight in a motorcycle accident.

Jude has lived in several countries and all over the United States. She currently lives in Charlotte, North Carolina and has an additional home in the medieval city of Badolato, Italy.

Im quite conflicted regarding this one.

It wasn’t very interesting at all and I don’t know why but I just wasn’t a huge fan of the romance either.

Also, I feel like the author tried a little too hard setting this little mystery vibe to the plot but it just didn’t work for me at all. You do keep reading just to figure out if there’ll be any more clues, anything more interesting regarding the case so you yourself can solve it somehow but no, it’s not like that unfortunately.

I saw no chemistry between the 2 protagonists and I wasn’t either a fan of any of them, found them a bit annoying at times.

Not sure if I’d recommend this.

I enjoyed this book a lot more than I expected to! I really loved the characters, especially Mike. Sara annoyed me a tad at the beginning but as she grew some balls and started standing up for herself, I grew to quite like her. The plot constantly kept me guessing and had so many twists that I really didn't see coming which kept me turning the pages to find out what would happen next. And I loved how it all came together for the perfect ending!

Author Jude Deveraux is the NEW YORK TIMES bestselling author of thirty-eight books. There are more than sixty million of her books in print worldwide. Other titles include: Days of Gold, Lavender Morning, Return to Summerhouse, and Secrets. She resides in North Carolina with her family.

This book is part of the EDILEAN SERIES, though can be read as a stand alone novel.

In the quaint little town of Edilean, Virginia, Sara Shaw is making wedding plans, much to the distress of her family and friends. Greg Anders is not the man they would have chosen for the town's "golden child." Greg isn't like everyone else in town--he's abrupt, rude, and has a superior attitude. Plus, most think he's cheating on her. But Sara is devoted to him, assured that Edilean just doesn't know him. Then Greg leaves town unexpectedly, leaving Sara to wonder when he'll return and where they stand in their relationship. Strangely enough, undercover cop Mike Newland shows up just after Greg leaves. And the town all but bows down to the newcomer. When Sara learns that Mike was sent to Edilean because her fiancé and his mother are career criminals and planning the heist of a lifetime, Sara doesn't know what to do. Worse, she's finding herself attracted to the man, a man who cannot emotionally or physically commit to her. Either way, Mike and Sara need to figure out what it is Greg's family wants from her, before they find it first and she becomes expendable.

The only fault I found with the book was that the characters backgrounds and inner thoughts didn't always seem to match their actions. For instance, Sara is witty and smart, yet she lets this Greg guy push her around and doesn't see through him. And Mike, who refuses to ever commit and marry, who lives a thousand miles away, quickly falls for Sara and is a bit soft at times.

In saying that, I always take pleasure in a Jude Deveraux book. She writes with a poetic simplicity that makes her stand alone. Though a romantic suspense, this is heavy on the contemporary romance with intrigue elements. The hero and heroine were hilarious in their dialog. Back and forth, back and forth. I laughed out loud. As typical of her books, Deveraux is at her best when describing her settings. It puts the reader right there in the pages with the characters. The secondary characters were a nice add to the storyline. I can't wait to read more about them. Recommended.

This was, quite possibly, the worst book I have ever read. The main woman, Sara, is a weak woman who lets her fiance tell her what to do and then he disappears, she is still insanely loyal and thinks there's a good reason he up and left in the middle of the night not telling her where he's going. By the end of the book she is some super smart catch a criminal genius. Give me a break.
Main guy, Mike, Comes through a tunnel into his sisters appt. and scares Sara who is staying there...Really a tunnel...He is a detective trying to catch the disappearing fiance, oh and he's undercover but told not to lie about who he is. Oh but the feds burn his appt so no one can trace him...really??...anyway, he's trying to catch the bad guys a figure out what poor little Sara has that they want. He ends up blabbing why he's there to her, well she guesses because by this point she has become super smart and doesn't let anyone tell her what to do, and what does she do? tells her friends so they can all help. Did I forget to mention that in the beginning it's repeated what a great detective he is and he always goes undercover for the big cases and oh yeah, he only works for a PD in FL but he is sent to VA on this case? If he is so great at being undercover why can't he keep his mouth shut about the case?
Mike doesn't even really end up catching the bad guys, She does. and it's with her friends plans. Really I understand that this is a romance novel, they aren't known for being deep. But this was the most ridiculous book. He's an idiot, she's an idiot. The plot is so silly that the whole time I was mentally rolling my eyes.
Why, then, did I keep reading? I have read other books by the author that were good. I was hoping it would get better. It didn't.

Maybe I read this book at the wrong time and wrong place. I didn’t enjoy it very much. It’s a romantic mystery kind of book but I didn’t actually capture the romance and the mystery… like I said, my timing must be off somehow. I never felt disappointed reading JD’s book and it seems that there’s always a first time for everything.

For the romance part, I think Sara is so unsure of her feeling that she can simply move from one guy to another without much hesitation.

As for the mystery part, it doesn’t trigger me enough to dig deeper and at certain level, I felt that I could care less whether the mystery gets solve or not….

But this is only my two cents. I might not like it but others might love it. That’s why I gave this book 3 stars and for you who likes mystery romance, you should try it… 

P/S: Still having the CHEERS feeling reading this book….

I don't know why I'm in the minority on this entire series but I really like it. I love the characters (the main characters and all the supporting characters too). They are all just quirky and fun to hang around with. In this one I particularly liked Mike though I admit that Sarah was a little TSTL in the beginning. I can never figure out why smart women do stupid things or allow men to force them to do stupid things. Her entire relationship with Greg Anders made absolutely no sense. Anyway, I liked how not-so-handsome Mike with the unbelievably sexy body basically swept Sarah off her feet (after he annoyed the hell out of her of course!)

The plot is a good one. An undercover cop who just happens to have a sister (Tess) living in Edilean where a con artist and her son are playing out another con. The cops know where Mitzi is but not what she wants in backwater Edilean. Mike's task is to figure out exactly what Sarah Shaw has that this diabolical duo wants and of course, to save the girl. The mystery and Mike's unreal athletic abilities kept me turning pages. I love me some Scots so when the kilt went on, I was there waiting for the games to commence. Another good read from Ms. Deveraux. I will definitely return to Edilean Virginia. Hmm I wonder which one of those quirky females will be the next heroine...Ariel maybe?

it gets even worse.
maybe my taste was different back then, maybe I enjoyed cheesy romantic books...

OH WHO AM I KIDDING THIS IS BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe Jude decided to make this shit of a book a part of this amazing series. I refuse to acknowledge it as a part Edilean.

I wish I could tell you what's wrong with this book but I'd rather study and ready cheesy 2000's shojo mangas than do that.

Three years later and I'm still upset.

I could accept the characters' individual...quirkiness. I even almost made excuses for them actually: Mike can be an asshole because he doesn't have much experience being genuine with people. But you know, with that kind of background, I think it would be even better if he was really a bastard, at least he could earn his redemption in the end, and not just suddenly turn into this likeable person who really just charms his way around because it's part of being undercover.

Sarah, on the other hand, is a pushover, or so people think. There is too much editorializing on how she really is a spitfire. I would've liked to see more of that throughout the whole story through actual scenes. Also: she shows that she's deviant and can stand her ground, but that whole rendezvous away from Virginia had me gritting my teeth a few times. I mean, I will rue the day I would allow some man to haul me out of bed just to go to the gym. Of all places! Of all things! To have someone order you around and make plans for you so you won't get fat (in his opinion)...even going so far as saying that yoga is good so you'll be nimble for other things, meaning, his pleasure -- that is ridiculous, to me. I know Mike's character means well for Sarah, and maybe he's just trying to influence her into a healthier lifestyle, but there's nothing in the book that indicates that Sarah spends her time eating cake and being a slob. Moreover, Mike *is* used to going to the gym all the time because he has no friends outside of that place. Also, he is a bit obsessed about having a good body and letting people know about it, isn't he?

Anyway, I think the only character I really like is Brewster Lang. That scene where he becomes a fortune-teller and lets the people of Edilean know all about the little secrets that he has come across over the years -- that is precious.

Second read was great! It has been so many years since I've read this series (and many, many books in between) that I felt as if I was reading it the first time. Very good! Onto the next one "Scent of Jasmine." ;)

This will be a short and sweet review as I did not finish this one. The premise of a undercover cop sent to protect a woman who was unknowing marrying a con artist intent on getting something from her she didn’t even know she had was a great one. It intrigued me. I eagerly got to this one because I had never read a Jude Deveraux book. After the first few chapters I had a hunch this one wasn’t for me. It dragged entirely way too much. Sara was supposed to be this innocent, home grown woman..and she was.. but it felt to goody goody for me. She was very stereotypical innocent. Mike, the undercover cop just had no heat. No spark. Nada. I didn’t feel anything between them at all. At page 178 I pretty much just gave up. Nothing was happening. I didn’t feel like there was any suspense and the romantic element seemed barely there.

Scarlet Nights has gotten some good reviews on here, so I encourage you to check those out if you would like. Just because it wasn’t for me doesn’t mean you won’t like it.

when Sara meets Tess's brother, undercover cop Mike, she finds herself unwittingly part of his case. You can imagine the comedy of errors that ensues as Sara goes from sweet young thing to a holy terror. Even her nemesis Ariel is impressed by the end. I loved the story and the resolution, and wonder of wonders, it didn't end too fast!

A great read. Mike Newland is an undercover detective. For years he’s lived life on the road, remaining as anonymous as possible. But when his next mission is right in his hometown he knows he’s in for trouble. The FBI had been after Mitski, a known con artist and fraud, for years, along with her equally dangerous son. They’ve finally found her in Edilean, Virginia. While Mike’s sister is luckily out of town, it appears that her best friend Sara Shaw is at the heart of this case. Taking on a new identity as Greg Anders, Mitski’s son seems to be engaged to Sara, who has no idea of his criminal activities. Mike’s mission to find out what Greg really wants from Sara and get Sara to cancel that wedding at all costs. Sara Shaw is the epitome of the small town girl. She’s had her heart broken before and she’s not willing to let the town pity her. She found a new fiancé, only everyone in town hates him. Sara can’t figure out why Greg is so unliked, and despite his behavior to her she doesn’t wanna admit she’s unhappy with him. With only days till the wedding, Greg leaves mysteriously one night with no warning. That’s when Mike comes into Sara’s life. While Mike knows he has to protect her, he can’t help but feeling extremely attracted to his sisters best friend. He planned to fake seduce her in order to get her away from her fiancé, but now he really wants to seduce her and not let her go. As the mystery unfolds and the two familiarize themselves, Mike discovers there is only one way to protect Sara… marry her before Greg.

A WHIRLWIND! This books reminded me why I love Jude deveraux books so much. They are legitimately crazy. The plots are so fun and quirky, the characters beloved, and the romance is hot. I’m pretty sure if you gave me an hour I wouldn’t be able to explain this book in its entirety. Like many of her romances that involve mystery, it’s bonkers. So many plot points omg. So many characters omg. I can’t explain the fun dynamic she has in her writing that just makes it work. I really liked this one. Classic Jude elements with some great twists. I loved both Sara and Mike. Something I thought was interesting was Mike was not at all your stereotypical male lead. He had a bad hairline and was average height. I couldn’t figure out why everyone who knew him kept calling him ungodly handsome, but Sara didn’t describe him as such. It wasn’t till we find out this man is an expert cook, has immaculate fashion taste, and is an insanely skilled fighter that it starts to make sense. THEN we discover that Mike naked has the body of a Greek god, so there we go that explains a lot lol. But truly really loved this book crazy adventure in a small town with Scottish elements? Idk so good. Long live Jude.

3.5 stars. One of the better books in this series. Not sure that the story always flowed so well and there were some holes, but overall a pretty good book and story. Mike fell too quickly and Sarah was a bit of a pushover so not the strongest H mad h I have come across and I would have liked an epilogue but not a bad story.

My review:

Scarlet Nights by Jude Deveraux was one of the books I won from another book blogger’s giveaway. I didn’t know what to expect, only the information I saw on the back side of the book and it caught my eye. I read it during my July vacation and enjoyed it incredibly.

Scarlet Nights is a part of Edilean series, it is book 3, but it is standalone book, so I did not even get the feelings that there was some information missing. I read this book in one sitting almost; I just had to get couple of hours of sleep during the night and then continued reading. It was that captivating! Jude Deverauz is a highly professional author who knows how to keep the reader interested; just when you think what is going to happen, something changes. There were couple of very good twists in the book, but to avoid spoilers I ‘m not going to reveal them.

Scarlet Night was well written book with interesting characters. It gave a wonderful picture of a small town life, how the families are connected and in some cases related to each other and how the history of these families still influences the presence.

Regarding the plot:

The book starts out that FBI agent Mike Newland gets a task to go undercover to a small town in the middle of nowhere called Edilean. Since he is undercover agent, he keeps his private life secret and he is taken by a surprise that somebody actually knows that he is connected to Edilian and that he has a sister living there. Mike takes unwillingly the task and his task will be protecting a woman named Sara Shaw from the notorious criminal who she is about to marry.

Settings in Edilean were wonderfully created. I enjoyed how Jude Deveraux described the small town life where all the families are connected and how the hatred and animosity from generations back influenced the characters. It was genuinely well written.

Regarding the characters:

Besides the plot, author’s detailed descriptions of the history of the Edilean, the characters were fabulous! Both main and supporting characters were intriguing and fascinating. Even the smallest characters had their place in the book and were thoroughly though through and described in details. I loved that, it gave so much meat to the bones.

Sarah was hard to swallow for me in the beginning. She was so submissive, so vulnerable, and too sweet for my taste in the beginning of the book. During the book her character grew and I found that there is lot of courage, independence in her, which has just being suppressed during her relationship with Greg. She was vulnerable from her relationship with Brian that definitely left some serious scars in her soul. After meeting Mike Sara started to shine, her personality was brightened up.

Mike was adorable! His personality was very easy to like. I loved that fact Jude Deveraux wrote some soft spots into Mike – his protectiveness towards his sister Tess, his complicated childhood living with his granny. I liked that Mike had more into him just being an average FBI macho. He was sweet, had a great sense of humor and he was very resourceful while working on the case.

I loved the supporting characters! Tess, Luke, Brewster Lang, Joyce – they were all wonderful characters! I like when author takes her attention to supporting characters, too, so everything in the story is not only about the protagonists.

Generally:

I loved this book! It had romance, action, and twists in the plot, absolutely believable characters and reliable setting, so I would highly recommend this book!

5 stars out of 5.

Have I said how much I love Jude Deveraux? Scarlet Nights is another fantastic read by Jude that continues the lives of the tight knit folks of Edilean Virgina. Edilean is a tiny little town tucked away on the outskirts of Williamsburg that was founded by a native Scotsman and named for the woman he loved. The inhabitants of Edilean are descendants of the founding families of the town, and while they are welcoming and tolerant of outsiders, they take pride in taking care of and protecting their own.

This story picks up in modern day with sweet little Sara Shaw. Sara is the baby of three girls, engaged to a jerk, and overwhelmed with her fiance’s demands. While he leaves on business he refuses to disclose to her, Sara is left to plan a wedding and alter clothes for clients. Although Sara was a nice sweet girl there was nothing particularly extraordinary about her. She was pretty run of the mill. Likable, but I wasn’t attached to her. She could have been replaced with anyone else, and I still would have enjoyed the story.

But Mike was loveable. He’s smart, in crazy shape, brave, and fiercely protective of his baby sister Tess. With no other family to speak of, Mike goes undercover in Edilean, to protect his sister and make sure her best friend isn’t caught in the crossfire of career criminals. Mike’s history is interesting to say the least. Raised by his hateful Grandmother, Mike left as a teenager and joined the force. He managed to travel to distant lands and study various forms of martial arts, has been involved in all manner of undercover assignments, and has a unique way of revealing nothing about himself.

Mike’s and Sara’s relationship started off slow and timid. Sara was convinced he had been sent to sabotage her wedding, and Mike wasn’t sure how to get her to trust him. But slowly they settled into an easy and comfortable friendship which consisted of exploring old farms, and sharing dinner with each other and friends. The attraction grew steadily and Sara finally began to open her eyes. She realized that everything good in Mike glaringly highlighted all the shortcomings of her fiance Greg.

I loved the tight knit feel of the little town of Edilean, and I love how we got to know the people who are descended from the Harcourts whose story we got in Days of Gold. The mystery surrounding Sara and Edilean was intriguing and developed nicely. You were given just enough information or clues in intervals to keep you turning the pages. The ending was a bit fast and slightly unbelievable, but I still liked how the information tied together. This is not Jude’s best work, but she still managed to write a very enjoyable story. I really liked it and can’t wait for the next in the Edilean series, or a Jude novel period.

After Days of Gold Edilean 2, I wasn't certain if I wanted to return to Jude Deveraux's little town in Virginia or not. That book disappointed me greatly in its return to the style of writing Deveraux uses in her colonial America novels.

Thankfully, Scarlet Nights had more in common with Deveraux's recent titles and was a good, fun read. This book could be read as a sequel to the first book in the Edliean series, Lavender Morning Edilean 1, but prior knowledge of the first book isn't all that necessary. It does help to flesh out the town's characters, though.

Scarlet Nights is the story of Sara Shaw. She's about to marry a man that all of her friends hate, Greg Anders. They own a dress shop together, and Sara has slowly become more and more isolated from her friends and family due to all of the work the shop brings her. Mike Newland is Tess's brother (readers of LM will remember Tess and the secretary). Mike is an undercover police officer, and he has been sent to Edilean as a part of a federal investigation into a crime family that seems to have set up a con there. Mike knows that Greg Anders is not who he seems, and his job is to protect Sara--however he can.

After having read three books in the Edilean series, I can honestly say that I like what Deveraux is doing here. I don't particularly like the second book, but it does provide a look at the history of the town, a history that has become a legend by the time of book one. Books one and three work together nicely. This series is allowing Deveraux to weave a story of an entire town and develop most of the families that live there. She did something similar with her Montgomery series, but by having so many books in the present, she has given herself an amazing canvas to work with.

While I don't think Scarlet Nights is an amazing read, it's part of a very interesting project on Deveraux's part, and I'm eager to see what she does with her later books in the series.
