Hotaru doesn't need a boyfriend. But an act of kindness to a classmate going through a breakup opens a door she never thought to step through, in and everything begins to change... A sweet new shojo romance manga from the creator of Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty !
WISE MEN SAY ONLY FOOLS RUSH IN
After extending the length of their “trial relationship,” Hotaru has done what she thought was developed romantic feelings for Hananoi-kun! But just as she starts to face this reality, she is reunited with a boy from her past.
Okay, Hananoi is a real creeper, and I have NO IDEA why Hotaru has rose-colored glasses when dealing with him. A GUY IS NO GOOD WHEN HE SAYS HE NEEDS NO FAMILY OR FRIENDS OTHER THAN YOU!! RED FLAG, RED FLAG! If this weren’t a shojo manga, I would think this was leading to something ultra sinister...
This was so cute!!! The art style was gorgeous. I've been looking for a cutesy manga with a very sweet romance plot and this fits the bill. I really hope that they can become an official couple in the future volumes.
We learn a little bit more about Hananoi in this volume with the conversation that Hotaru has with his Grandma. I appreciated this insight and would like more because it really does help make him more palatable. The art is really impressive in this series.
This gave me such a warm feeling. Their love is growing on me and I think it’s cute and wholesome and they’re so young and figuring out everything it’s cute. Definitely a good way to end the month!
Hananoi is kind of growing on me. I'm not making excuses for his unhealthy notions about love, but he's such a tragic and relatable character. He clearly has abandonment issues and isolates himself to avoid disappointment. While I'm mostly continuing this series because I heard it gets better later on, I also really want things get better for him.
Updated Review 6/25/24: "When I look at you, I think, if love's strong enough to change someone for the worse then surely it's strong enough to change them for the better, too."
I still continue to deeply love this series and deeply admire these two! I know Hananoi is intense and extreme, but both of them are trying SO hard to be open about their feelings and move forward together. They feel like such realistic characters!
Definitely did not have a strong first impression of Yao, even though I know my feelings will change later on…
I will say one takeaway I had this second time reading is that I love how Hotaru was strong in her feelings. Hananoi wanted to make sure that she knew what she was saying by saying she loved him, and as a result, he unintentionally made it seem like she didn't know what she wanted or felt, but SHE did. Their ending conversation totally affirmed that she did know how she felt and loved how she said that even if she didn't have much faith in herself, she DID have faith in the relationship they had built together. It really felt like that even if they see things differently, it doesn't mean that they feel differently when it comes to loving the other person. Wonderful message!
EEEEEPPP to that ending!
Original Review 5/27/23: A series that just keeps getting better and better with each volume!
I was thinking last night of what I wanted to say on this volume and I genuinely don't know what to say except it's a special one. Both our leads are working SO hard to understand the other. It doesn't matter if they are sad, angry, or happy, they both are striving to learn more about each other and be there for one another.
I continue to be very much eager to see how Hananoi's story unfolds (even if it's hard seeing his heartbreak of abandonment and fear start to come more and more to the surface) because I so desperately want to see this young man have a healed heart! Not just because he has found someone like Hotaru who is slowly falling in love with him, but because he knows his worth and value as an individual, regardless if he is loved by Hotaru or not. I DEEPLY want that for him and hope that I WILL be able to see that at some point!
Hotaru has been a joy to watch, especially in this volume! She is working through past trauma, which was also hard, but I admire how she is always moving forward in discovering what love is. I think more often than not she is too hard on herself and it was satisfying seeing her take baby steps in being more courageous in her actions and words. Cheering for you Hotaru! <3
Another wonderful volume and can't wait for the next one!
Don't get me wrong this manga's really cute and I love the main couple (+ some of the side characters) but why does the male lead constantly say that she's his "whole world" and he "doesn't need friends or family if he has her"... That just seems really unhealthy? Or a red flag as some might say
I get that this is a shoujo manga so I have to take it with a pinch of salt but like... Come on
4 stars I’m living vicariously through them at this point.
Content/TW- 2 forms of hot, 3 god, 2 oh my god, 2 hell, 1 screwed up, 1 gosh, 1 unfinished ‘son of a…’; A mention of someone being called “the demon of positivity”; Main Couple and another couple are snowed in together & while they separate by gender in each room, our main couple ends up falling asleep on each others’ shoulders); Two embraces; 1 forehead kiss; He says he only needs her, doesn’t want anyone else to touch her, & wants her everything; Mentions of crushes & jealousy; A mention of a womanizer in the making (a teen guy); a mention of a grandmother being concerned about a young couple being up to “funny business”; A mention of a comment about what “every man in the spring of his life wants to see” (a woman wearing his clothes); Two pictures showing him showering (nothing shown of course); Dating, dates, boyfriends/girlfriends, falling in love & such is the main focus & discussed often.
I love how Hotaru is so caring and she is always thinking of how Hananoi-Kun is feeling. She even explains something she's uncomfortable talking about so that Hananoi can understand more about Hotaru and won't be jealous of her old friends. This is an excellent example of a healthy relationship where honesty and compassion are key. When Hotaru is struggling to tell Hananoi-Kun that she loves him, he realizes this and tells her that she can take her time. All of the small things that they both do to consider each other's feelings are so incredible and it's my favorite display of a relationship that I've seen in a manga ever (since a lot of other mangas are over dramatized and come off as creepy).
It’s a cute series so far but reading as an adult, I can smell some red flags. But when you remember that they are teenagers, isn’t that the case? However, the story line does a good job at highlighting behavior that’s not “normal” and Hotaru’s internal monologue identifies it and talks it through should the reader be in a similar situation. “A Condition Called Love” reads like a cautious budding romance and how to navigate a relationship at a young age.
Again, the story is really good and it’s progressing well. But theres a nagging feeling that there’s a secret that Hananoi is let telling Hotaru. Idk maybe it’s just a feeling.
Aghhh the panels are so cute. Why couldn’t high school romance be like this irl 🤣
I can feel character development coming on the horizon!
So yeah, Hananoi is a big walking red flag. But there's potential for him to turn green.
RECAP: Studying session turned sleep over, new coworker from childhood, jealous Hananoi, valentines day chocolate, baking a cake, time apart, and then dating for real.
I'm so conflicted!!! Like what am I supposed to get out of this?? Am I supposed to question Hananoi? Or am I supposed to think this is cute and root for their relationship? The way people around her talk about Hananoi make it seems like something's up. Plus the whole thing about him coming to her job super often because he was jealous of Yao-kun made me uncomfortable. And the thing where he said to take a break because he wanted her to really think about her feelings. Which!! Her friend mentioned something in the previous volume about how if their loves are different it could turn out bad. It makes me think that something is going to eventually turn sour. The whole valentine thing was super cute and so was the end when they decided to go out for real, but I'm just so unsure of this relationship. I'm just dying to know how this series is going to end now.

10/2025 Re-Read: I love this volume. I think it really shows a lot about Hananoi and Hotaru's different approaches and views on love, but also how they're willing to work together to overcome those differences. Neither of them are perfect, but already their communication is so good. The Valentine's chapter is one of my favorite of the whole series. I love how Hotaru noticed that it was the first time she was really seeing Hananoi as fully himself. Hananoi does have a lot of red flags in this volume, but we also are starting to learn more about his past and seeing how his family history has shaped him.
I have so many mixed feelings on this series. I really love Hotaru’s character but Hanakoi is SUPER SHADY sometimes. So many red flags. Hanakoi is possessive, a bit of a stalker, clingy and insecure. I really don’t like him as the male lead. I actually like the new guy that shows up from Hotaru’s past.
Hotaru finally works up the courage to express her love for him and what does he do? He basically dumps her!! WHAT??! He has so many insecurities which is understandable due to how his parents have a abandoned him but DUDE!! Have a little confidence in the girl you love. Sheesh.
This is not my favorite shojo series but I’ll keep reading it and screaming at the characters while I do. 😜
