Decent enough intro, but it tries to address too many topics -- types of music, types of instruments, music theory, etc -- that it ends up with shallow explanations that don't satisfy. But at least now I have a few vocabulary and conceptual pointers that will help me if I read something more focused.

Good for basics in the classcial composition/harmony, teaches also some essentials of jazz arranging and orchestration... anyway, only an introduction.
