Three stars is supposed to mean "I liked it," but in this case it means there were things I thought were brilliant while other things weren't very good.

Positive first: The best thing about this novel, for me, is its completely different account of vampires. Desperate to blend in with the mainstream and keep their special nature a secret, they look, act, and age like regular humans until they're very old, and then they become adolescents again and live as typical human teenagers, only regaining their powers and memories as they reach adulthood. These "life-cycles" are repeated indefinitely because they're living under a curse that God laid on certain Irish septs 1500 years ago for their murderous campaign against the newly introduced Christian religion. The curse (called mallachd here, mallacht in Standard Irish) keeps them repeating their life-cycles till God decides they've redeemed themselves; until then, they can only be killed by beheading.

Sure enough, vampire slayers arise who know their secret; and after the Kahill sept was attacked 300 years ago, losing a dozen members, they fled to the New World and established a settlement at Clare Point in the brand-new Delaware colony--yes, it's a vampire village on Delaware Bay with a flourishing summer season, and neither the tourists nor the nearby towns there in Kent County have any inkling that the population of Clare Point isn't human. You see, they don't have a big problem with sunlight, they love garlic, and drinking human blood is strictly forbidden in the Kahill sept; they hunt deer instead on a federal forest preserve nearby.

The sept also prohibits sex before 21 and sex with humans. Marriages last over the centuries, but sex is open and free within the sept and at least one wife is (knowingly) best friends with her husband's mistress. The powers regained with adulthood in each life-cycle include telepathic communication at different levels of skill and certain individual gifts. The author says of the main character, Fia Kahill, that
It used to gall her that some sept members could walk through walls, move an apple across the table without touching it, shape-shift, or make objects burst into flames while she could do none of those things. But [her grandfather] had once told her that she had the gift of humanity and that was what made her special to the sept and vital to their survival.
I'd give 4.5 stars to the world this author has built, and I loved some of the side characters in the village. Also, I thought Glen, the principal male character, was really well done in his role as an FBI special agent from the Baltimore office investigating decapitations in Clare Point and trying to figure the village out while being forced by political pressure to partner with a second special agent who is not only from outside his territory (from the Philadelphia office) but grew up in Clare Point: Fia Kahill. As a romantic hero, though, Glen falls flat; his progression isn't very credible, and the ending is unsatisfying .

And then there's Fia. She's pretty believable as a special agent of the FBI, and I can see a special agent leading a double life (think of J. Edgar!), but Fia's other life is a mess. She's actually one of the twelve members of the Clare Point High Council, which seeks to redeem the sept by ordering assassinations of murderers, rapists, and child molesters; but she's addicted to sex with humans and human blood. She knows that if the Council ever found out what she's been doing in Philadelphia they'd bring her back to Clare Point under supervision for the rest of this life-cycle. She's already on sufferance because the one true love of her life was Ian, the human who betrayed her by leading the slaughter of the Kahills 300 years ago in Ireland. In spite of that, she still has strong romantic feelings for Ian that she transfers to Glen, who looks and sounds just like Ian. Ian, who murdered her family and was just using her to set it up. Fia, what's wrong with you?

As the story goes on, there's precious little progress in detection (and that's realistic), but they discover the culprit almost by accident. And Fia's other human ex-lover Joseph should just have been edited out. Still, the third-person narrative reads easily and has lots of bright moments.

There is a killer loose in the small town of Claire’s Point, Delaware. The townspeople are frightened, as they should be, because this sadistic killer has beaten and cut off the head and feet of one of their own. But this is not just any killing. This is the possible work of a vampire slayer because Clare’s Point has been a haven to a vampire clan for centuries. Their only answer for being safe again may be FBI Special Agent Fia Kahill.

Fia is also a vampire, who has left her family and made a life in Philadelphia, working with the FBI. Fia has been called in on this case and, because it has happened practically in her own backyard, she will do everything she can to find this killer. What she doesn’t expect is to have a partner, and he happens to be human. And to make matters worse, he is the exact duplicate of her human lover from long ago. Fia lost her heart and almost her life to another human male who used her to try to kill everyone in the town. Her people killed him but, almost four-hundred years later, FBI Agent Glen Duncan arrives and everyone is in shock. Fia can’t understand how this can be, and she can’t seem to deny her attraction to Duncan.

As Fia and Duncan investigate her family and friends, two more bodies are found, and it becomes even more personal for Fia as one of the dead was a friend. No one is safe, and Fia is no longer certain she can control the town elders from becoming vigilantes and wanting blood. Fia is also reverting back to her old ways by trolling bars and taking the blood from anonymous men. As she tries her best to protect Duncan, she can no longer deny her attraction to him. Duncan starts to feel the same about Fia and wants to be more than just her partner.

ETERNAL is a wonderful crime drama with a touch of the paranormal. The vampire myths readers are so used to are very much changed in this story. V.K. Forrest has taken an old legend and made it her own. I really got the sense and the atmosphere of what a small town is like, especially with Fia visiting local haunts from her youth, such as the various bars and restaurants, as well as hanging out with old friends. Other than Duncan trying to get Fia into his bed, she has many other men who wish to do the same, such as Arlan, an old “friend with benefits,” and another past lover, Joseph, who wants back into Fia’s life and who has a bad addiction to draining his victims dry and almost killing them.

There are also many secondary characters who add to the story, such as Fia’s Uncle Sean, who is Clare’s Point's Sheriff and Kaleigh, a teenage vampire who has been reborn and used to be one of the clans’ wise women. Kaleigh has secrets that could destroy the case and allow the gruesome killer to never be found.

I was surprised by the killer's identity and absolutely had no clue who it could have been, which shows how great a writer Forrest is. She has an excellent way of building the tension around Fia and also the simmering passion between her and Duncan. Because I have never really read a story quite like ETERNAL, I wouldn’t be surprised if V.K. Forrest becomes the author to read whether she writes crime suspense or paranormal romance.

Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Pack Alpha - Michelle L. Olson:

Eternal was a refreshing vampire novel, a paranormal murder mystery with a kick butt, strong female lead and an incredible supporting cast.

Unlike 'normal' vampires, the Kahill vampires are a sect of Celtic immortals cursed by God to live their lives over and over until they get it right and are forgiven by the Almighty.

Fia Kahill is one of the most human among them. Having left her home town of Clare Point years ago to pursue her career as an FBI agent she tries to distance herself from the rest of the sect as much as possible. She still struggles with what she is a bit and she finds that living as humanly as possible helps to keep her grounded. Unfortunately she still has responsibilities to her brethren, and when a murder happens in her old home town she must return and confront her past and her inner demons.

Glen Duncan is an FBI agent from another field office and is sent to Clare Point to investigate the bizarre murder of the small town postal worker. After arriving, he meets Agent Fia Kahill, a fiery, headstrong, and mysterious woman that he can't help but be drawn to. The chemistry between the two is undeniable and explosive, but neither is willing to act upon their feelings for reasons all their own.

Despite the secrets Fia's obviously keeping, the oddness of the townspeople in general, the strangeness of the case and the unsettling feelings they are having for one another, Glen and Fia work tirelessly to get to the bottom of what's going on in Clare Point and solve the murder.

The mystery was fabulous and I had absolutely no idea until the very end who the bad guy was. I also loved the way that VK introduced numerous members of the supporting cast throughout the story and let us in on little secrets that made me want not only more of this book, but more of the series in general.

LITERAL ADDICTION gives Eternal 4 Skulls and would recommend it for Urban Fantasy, Paranormal Romance, and even murder mystery lovers. I can't wait to continue the journey...

Eternal is the first in a wonderful new paranormal crime series by V.K. Forrest.

It seems that we are starting to see more of what I will call paranormal crime coming out of the world of paranormal romance – crime stories with a bit of steam and a lot of paranormal, and this is an excellent example of this emerging sub-genre.

The characters, environment and story are all well developed, with a nice flow, a few twists and turns and a couple of side stories just to throw the odd curve ball. As with all good crime, you’re left guessing until the end.

There is a lack of emotional attachment to the characters, but again, I think this is also normal within a crime genre. In paranormal romance you expect to be totally involved with the characters, whereas in a more crime based genre, you really don’t want to be at that level of intensity, particularly when people start getting beheaded! Unfortunatly, although I am enjoying this genre, it won’t make it to my all time favourite list, as I do rather like being emotionally sucked into the characters' lives.

The Kahill clan is an interesting concept. A whole ‘sept’ of vampires hiding out in small town America, redeeming themselves by hunting down the scum of the human world (although this aspect is a side story in the first book), but otherwise forbidden from entering into relationships of any sort with humans for fear of discovery.

FBI agent Fia Kahill has a nicely torturous past, full of regret and guilt that makes her an interesting lead character. Glen, of course, is just an all-round nice guy (for the most part). The side characters all hint at interesting stories to come in future books as well.

If the rest of the series is as interesting and well written as this one I think we’re in for a heck of a treat!

I enjoyed the different outlook this book had on the now-so-trite 'vampire' theme. The author made the vampires in the group feel more like a community struggling to survive peacefully with humanity, than a bunch of inhuman bloodthirsty killers preying on the weak. It was really refreshing to read. The author gave each vampire a 'talent', received as part of their 'conversion' process. The main character's 'talent' is humanity. I also appreciated the inclusion of the religious aspects of the vampirism, as relates to Christianity. One of the twists I enjoyed was that eternal life on this earth is considered a curse (mallachd). The vampires viewed themselves as cursed by God (typical), and this curse was given a name I assume is meant to seem Celtic in origin--mallachd. Some vampires within this community view the curse as able to be lifted, if they prove themselves and counter their essentially evil natures with good deeds and peaceful, respectful treatment of humans. The also seem to be horrified at the prospect of 'converting' unknowing humans, and burdening them with this curse without the humans agreement. Overall a nice twist on a tired theme.

Who is killing the vampires of Clare Point? The premise was good, when I found who the killer was - it was such a letdown. I did like the whole serial killer taking out the vamps, which was kind of a twist. However, the story just never grabbed me. I never really cared about Fia, the vampire/FBI agent. She just never clicked with me. I will give Undying a shot (the second book in the series). Hopefully, it will be better.

What a surprise. I only picked this book up because I needed one set in the state of Delaware (rare!)to finish off my Fifty States Challenge. It was much better than I expected, a combination romantic suspense and paranormal with a different take on the mythology of vampires incorporated within an FBI investigation/murder mystery.

A taste

The author's reinvention of vampires watered down this tale. Vampires that can be murdered without an epic fight? A clan of vampires reside in Clare Point where vampires are being decapitated. They rarely take human blood, usually feeding on deer for blood. The eat food, drink alcohol, function during the day with no aversion to the sun or garlic. None turn into bats but there are some who have the gift of telekinesis and teleportation. They are able to communicate with one another telepathically. They have rules like no sex with humans or sex before age 21. There are sufficient reviews detailing the plot so I'm not going to provide another synopsis. The pace of the story drags as over 50 characters are revealed. The story leaves the reader with multiple unanswered questions.
I guess my lesson learned is to stop buying all the books in a series before reading the first book at least. I certainly would have skipped the other books in the series; simply because there are so many more worthwhile books to read.

A crime drama with a touch of paranormal. We are brought to a town where vampires have set up shop and a vampire hunter is dismembering them. The supernatural aspects to the story weren't as present as I would have wanted to

This is the 1st in the Clare Point series by V. K. Forrest about Fia Kahill, an FBI Agent who has returned to her home town after the murder of her cousin Bobby McCathal. His head and feet are missing from the body which looks vagely familiar to a vampire slaying a long time back, Oh yes Fia is a vampire.
Unfortunately as her home town is not in her jurisdiction she is teamed up with FBI Agent Glen Duncan, who looks very much like her past love Ian Duncan but was also the slayer of her family.
She finds that even though she tries to distance herself from Glen, there is an attraction there that can’t be stopped .
But the killer now has his sights set on Fia and if she can’t stop him she will be his next victim.
I found this story very interesting and the mystery kept you going right to the end, although at times I did feel annoyed that she kept blocking her family telepathically and ignoring their calls, especially with a killer on the loose

There was so much wrong with this novel. The religious aspect and the constant religious phrases was absurd. I didn't like that they kept reincarnating after they died into senseless teens. Some teens are a lot smarter than the ones in this novel in real life and I found them to be annoying.

Instead of it being a paranormal romance it felt more like a badly written supernatural mystery. The crimes where mentioned but the evidence was scant. Towards the end of the novel, Fia happened to stumble upon who was committing the murders.

The blurb was misleading since Fia & Glen really didn't do the steps necessary to solve the crimes with clues accumulating like it should to figure out the suspect. Glen wasn't much help on the case anyway but then again, he's human and didn't have a clue what was really going on and that vampires exist.

The vampire victims where randomly chosen for the most part and Fia wasn't really in danger or next on the the agenda until she happened to appear on the scene.

The romance part of it happened really late in the book. And the fact she fell for someone who looked like her ex from her past was a bit much considering what he did so long ago. How does Fia a vampire expect to explain her long lifespan to Glen a mere human who of course will notice? How long does she think she can keep hiding from him her true nature? Especially since she keep bags of blood in an empty ice cream carton which he might stumble upon.

Also things where just thrown in like the part about who was committing the crimes as if it was an after thought.

It's not worth continuing in this series. There r too many wonderful authors with a much better put together story line to read.

In the beginning the book was a bit confusing to me, I had to get a good ways in to start understanding what was going on. This isn't a typical vampire book, they come out in the sun, eat human food, etc. I believe that's what threw me off. The book is mostly in Fia's pov. She is a tough as nails woman on the exterior but underneath the visage, she is a vampire that has been hurt and blames herself for the trouble she has caused her people. Her "home town" is Clare point, she's called there to investigate a murder, the problem is, it was a vampire that was murdered. The town worries that they have been found out when murders start piling up. Can Fia work with the detective that is the spitting image of the man that betrayed her so long ago? Everyone in the town is counting on her to figure out who is behind these murders or they are going to take matters into there own hands. This is a good paranormal book with a bit of romance. I didn't feel that Fia grew much throughout the book and her relationship with a certain someone wasn't really resolved. What happens between them?

thought the book interesting you've got a supernatural FBI agent who in not only a clan member, but blamed for the unfortunate betrayal of a lover, who killed a big amount of her family. So not only is she dealing with those turmoils, but new ones that arise, making it harder to do her job professionally, when called into her home town for a murder investigation of one of her own. She runs into a new partner on the job and to her dismay he looks exactly like her lover, of long ago. then more murders start to happen and an old friend comes to visit. A friend who is mad at her unthinkable actions and she can't help but wonder if he's responsible for her clans deaths. Its all a big ball of mystery and I loved every bit of this story.

Ok I give the Author cudos for a unique take on vampires/immortals. Immortals with life cycles hmm intresting but who in their right mind wants to grow old "die" and be born again as a teen just to do it all over again. Those teen years have to be killer ughh hormones, rules, no sex until 21, school.

Anywhoo...sorry about my rant..now to the story. Claire Point (psst secret home of a sept of these immortal vampires) has recently had a murder. The victim had his head and feet removed than burned..obviously someone knows about them and most importantly how to kill them. Special Agent Kahill.

More later s chool emergency.

I picked this one up admittedly because I needed a romance book set in Delaware. :) This isn't my usual cup of tea for Romance books, but the book had a very interesting premise... while the Vampire trope may not be "new," the motivations of the vampires is certainly an interesting telling of what might seem to be familiar tale. I gave it three stars instead of four because some points in the story didn't wrap up and left me with questions (perhaps thats where book 2 comes in) and Fia is more unlikable than likeable... and I think for me personally in order to continue on in the series, I would want to be a bit more sympathetic towards the main character.

Definitly a different twist on the vampire genre. These vampires were 'damned souls,' and they are trying to protect the human race in order to be giving a second chance at Heaven. So, they take it upon themselves to catch the serial killers, pedofiles, rapest, and other bad guys. They try to do away with them if the human laws don't protect us. That is until all of the sudden Vampires start getting killed!

An immortal that was betrayed by the love of her life, now she's spending her eternal life regretting falling in love with him. They said that history repeats itself.
she's called to her hometown to help in catching a killer that knows what they are, encountering a carbon copy of the one that betrayed her, and she felt the chemistry between them, the killing and the showing up of the one could be just a coincidence or not.
It was an intense story loved it from the start,
