Regan turns his full attention to the North to finally deal with the Undead Queen Alara. Challenges and barriers abound that work to keep him from achieving his goal. Magic, technology, and Regan's intelligence are put to the test as he fights his way North.
Louella continues to grow her town, drawing the attention fo forces that she'd rather have nothing to do with. When a threat unlike anything before attacks her home. She works even harder to protect the ones she loves, and the people that have come to depend on her.
Izora's life has been taking one turn after another, and she's not sure she can keep up much longer. When recalled back home to Jade Wind, she finds all is not as it seems.
I'm still having some fun with this LitRPG, but I should mention a few things.
It reads like a total authoritarian nightmare dressed up as a god just trying to set things right. When the baddies are bad with the same mind-control stuff, total suppression of free will, and are locked into a never-ending cycle of worship that they believe comes freely from themselves... and THEN we compare the same with our heroic MC who -- lest we forget -- basically killed humanity in a robot uprising before he was given control over a dungeon core, here -- we might want to investigate what might be going on.
And yet, we're meant to see him as a savior, a good guy, always looking out for his people and his 'children' and doesn't mind how many continent-busting machines of war he has to use to free everyone else from another tyranny?
Maybe it's just me. Maybe sometimes I like to see ultimate power at least TRY to do something right, but every step of the way, these slave colors are completely re-writing his allies. All in the name of good.
Other than that, lots of great action and cool robot vs mega-undead action on all possible fields of battle.
I've been holding off on writing anything because so far it has been so similar to the divine dungeon series, that has not detracted from the books at all. But now I am starting to see differences and not feel like we are heading to ACME lol. This series has been riveting non stop! Even the side stories that are related to Regan but not part of him are just as interesting and detailed. Matthew peed has captured such an amazing story with words and transported us to a magical world. I don't want to spoil anything, as if you've made it to book 5 you already have a general idea of the story. Just keep going and let's see the rise of machines!!!
The Battlefield Expands, Or Moves, Or Something . . . .
This is the fifth book in a series of ten (so far, the date of this review being 21May2021); so reading reviews of the first novel of the series, or the first novel of the series itself, would be a better measure of whether you want to read this series of books. That said, this is a Dungeon Core Series and will therefore most likely appeal to fans of the Dungeon Core, LitRPG, and Fantasy genres, as well as to those who enjoy playing RPGs.
New subplots and characters were introduced. Sadly it was at the expense of some time with previous characters. This may lead to there being too many for the story to flow coherently, but time will tell. The MC achieves one major goal, but it only leads to some much larger ones. A number of characters are starting to shift personality to more match the MC. Overall a good steady read and an enjoyable one. I recommend it
A gripping episode, great battles, great characters, amazing and unexpected developments, hints at the awesomeness to come, this is easily the best dungeon series out there.
This was a pretty good book. I enjoy the characters and the plot though I will say that there are some points where the multiple shifting points of view gets a little confusing. All in all I give it a solid 4.7/5
This approaches epic fantasy, tying several plots together into one broad story. There is a lot of action, the dungeon development is smart, and the writing is good enough to keep you up late turning pages to find out what happens next. Really good story
No good goes unpunished or as usual there is collateral damage from every action. Regan found that out. How will help deal with it? Can't wait to find out!
Skimming is a definite need for the book. The story is still good, but everything else takes patience and perseverance. If it were food, it would be gas station food.
