Now, we all get the chance to savor more of his profound wisdom in How to Sell Your Way Through Life . Written in the depths of the Great Depression, How to Sell Your Way Through Life explores a crucial component of your ability to make the sale. Ringing eerily true in today's uncertain times, Hill's work takes a practical look at how, regardless of our occupation, we must all be salespeople at key points in our lives. Hill breaks down concrete instances of how the Master Salesman seizes advantages and opportunities, giving you tools you can use to effectively sell yourself and your ideas. Featuring a new Foreword from leadership legend Ken Blanchard, this book is a classic that gives you one beautifully simple principle and the proven tools to make it work for you.
Oliver Napoleon Hill was an American self-help author and conman. He is best known for his book Think and Grow Rich (1937), which is among the best-selling self-help books of all time. Hill's works insisted that fervid expectations are essential to improving one's life. Most of his books were promoted as expounding principles to achieve "success". Hill is a controversial figure. Accused of fraud, modern historians also doubt many of his claims, such as that he met Andrew Carnegie and that he was an attorney.
Decent book with principles applicable to many professions including the one I'd like to pursue, law. Everyone is, in a way, a salesman. Working to be the best you can be will propel you to success in life (supposedly!).
This book surprised me bc it was quite different than what i expected when i picked it up. It was an easy to read book that doesnt bore you with personal stories. The insights come fast, and many feel timeless. some parts feel repetitive, and Hill can drift into idealism that doesn’t always match reality. He says the world is supposed to get better if people reads this book and a lot of years passed by people on the whole havent changed much and are still the same, so even if it is the truth, on its own isnt enough. Hill’s message is simple: if you want to influence others, you must first master yourself. With discipline, character and clarity of purpose. “The master salesman is a master of others because he is master of himself.” This isn’t just about business it’s about how we show up in the world. he reminds us that our habits, thoughts, and even our attitude are things we “sell” every day, whether we realise it or not. “People buy personalities and ideas much more quickly than they buy merchandise.” At its core, book is about service. Selling isn’t manipulation-it’s helping. It’s giving before getting. And he makes it clear that no lasting success comes without sacrifice. “You cannot be successful without paying the price of success.”
This book is incredibly long. It first started with the principles of sales negotiation, followed by the principles of life. All the principles are laid out in Napoleon Hill's famous book Think and Grow Rich. The 3rd part of the book focused on Henry Ford, the American industrialist and business magnate of Ford Motor Company. Part 4 of the book is about managing and working with people.
The book could easily be split up into 2-3 books. But since most books cost roughly the same amount, this book is definitely worth reading. I like the first half of the book more as it is more tuned towards sales.

Page 23 says that promotion always comes from direct frankness, and never from flattery.
Everyone must start by gaining something by the use of words, and learning how to appeal to the 9 basic motives is the only way to do so successfully - page 45.
The rest of the book is the application of Napoleon Hill's 17 principles of success to this specific subject, which have been amply explored elsewhere already.
I looked for a statement that says "You need to do this..." Instead found this "You need have no fear of competition from the person who says, I'm not paid to do this and I'll not do it. He will never be a dangerous competitor for your job. But watch out for the fellow who remains at his work until it is finished and performs a little more than is expected of him, for he may challenge you at the post and pass you at the grandstand.
In the connected and instantaneous communication world we live in today — this book was ahead of its time and more relevant now than ever before.
It seems we are all somewhat selling ourselves one way or another through life whether on a personal or commercial level — ie our beliefs, ideas and ways of seeing things on the personal —- all the way to our brand, message or product on the business level and more.
Marketing weirdly due to connecting these dots has become an topic of great interest and passion for me. This book really is a great explanation why and will help you thrive within to “Sell Your Way Through Life” as contained in its appropriately name title. My review won’t do it justice and I highly recommend getting this book to discover what “Selling” can mean in your life in ways you may not have considered before …
The only reason I have not given it 5 stars is because I’m familiar with the authors work - such as “Think and Grow Rich” - which a lot of this information is similar and overlaps with which makes it not as original as a stand alone product but rehashed work somewhat at times

"How to Sell Your Way Through Life" by Napoleon Hill, originally published in 1939, remains a timeless guide on mastering the art of sales and persuasion. Hill, known for his classic "Think and Grow Rich," delves into the principles of selling that are applicable not only in business but in all areas of life.
Hill presents a comprehensive approach to selling, emphasizing the importance of self-confidence, a pleasing personality, and the ability to persuade. He covers essential techniques such as storytelling, active listening, and understanding the audience's needs. The book is structured to provide practical advice on building trust, providing exceptional value, and overcoming objections.
The primary themes include the significance of self-belief, the development of a likable demeanor, and the mastery of persuasive techniques. Hill also focuses on the importance of setting goals, planning, and maintaining resilience in the face of setbacks. These principles are designed to enhance both personal and professional success.
"How to Sell Your Way Through Life" is a valuable resource for anyone looking to improve their sales skills and overall effectiveness in communication. Hill's timeless wisdom and practical advice provide a solid foundation for achieving success. This book is a must-read for those seeking to enhance their persuasive abilities and achieve their goals.
Napoleon Hill’s How to Sell Your Way Through Life is more than just a sales book—it’s a masterclass in the mindset of persuasion, influence, and success. While the lessons on salesmanship are invaluable, the book extends far beyond selling in a traditional sense. Hill offers timeless principles on human nature, self-discipline, and personal achievement that are just as relevant today as they were in the late 1930s.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the book is how it captures the zeitgeist of the era, with references to the New Deal, labor unions, and the post-Depression economic landscape. It’s an insightful look into the mindset of ambition during a time of recovery. However, the Henry Ford chapters felt out of place and didn’t age well, making them less engaging compared to the rest of the book.
Overall, it’s a fantastic read for anyone interested in developing a winning mentality—not just in sales, but in life. Hill’s wisdom remains practical, motivating, and deeply relevant, making this book a worthwhile addition to any personal development library.
I should say this book is pretty decent and has managed to help both the audience by catering to salesmen/women and people who are thinking of building a career as a marketeer. I am only halfway through the book as yet but there were way too many instances that resonated well with me in terms of the techniques of selling a service or cracking a deal. Those little nuisances that even professionals overlook at times are mentioned succinctly to drive the point home.
I had to push myself really hard to read through the chapter of Mr. Henry Ford for some reason it felt as if the author was trying to endorse Mr. Ford to the world. I do not have anything against Mr. Ford or any values or stands he behold but just that the author could have done a great job of talking about those values Mr. Ford imbibed without actually writing excessively about him.
Napoleon Hill’s How to Sell Your Way Through Life is a masterclass in understanding human nature and building trust in both personal and professional relationships. Known for his classic Think and Grow Rich, Hill offers practical advice and timeless wisdom that goes beyond selling and into the heart of effective communication. One key takeaway is the importance of a "Pleasing Personality"—the idea that kindness, confidence, and genuine interest in others can open doors and create opportunities in any area of life. It’s an insightful read for anyone looking to enhance their influence and build lasting connections.
Very conscise and to the point.Painstaking efforts by the Author to bring out the intricacies and positive traits of people who have been successful in their respective fields. The principles of success which has used Mr Henry Ford as an example is substantial and one wonders how a man of his disposition was able to take on the those who opposed him during his times. A powerful book, worth every penny and is also the foundation for many books on success which have been published later on.
It's amazing to read older books like this one and discover that the author is still discussing something that's happening today. The fact that the book was published in 1939, and Napoleon Hill was talking about the world needing dreamers with courage, and that it's still true today in 2025 is mind-blowing to me. I agree with most of the book, and I love the fact that as much of a sales book as it is a personal development book.
Started on Audible and finished on YT, both with excellent narrators.
Another excellent work of his, filled with common sense and good reminders. A lot of little gold nuggets, so I definitely recommend reading (or listening to) it.
