It’s time for the first big dance contest! The competition is fierce, but Ichirin’s dance club has at least one dancer who captures the attention of everybody there. But this story has two leads, right? Yeah, about that…
Wandance is amazing. It has been absolutely killing it in every volume so far and that doesn’t change here. I just lamented how underwhelming the ice skating was in the most recent Medalist, compared to what this series offers, so the pressure was on for this volume and it did not disappoint.
First, Kabo has to deal with his internal monologue laying out all his self doubt and such, naturally. But I love the way he’s come into himself as a dancer - he really turns his weaknesses into the urge to move forward. This is like Komi Can’t Communicate if Komi was the interesting one in the story.
Until things happen and it turns out that, yeah, all the eyes are on Wanda. Their relationship goes through some massive peaks and valleys this time around. As with many stories, this is about bad communication, but Kabo literally has his stuttering problem and, as much as she sticks up for him, Wanda can’t read his mind as well as she thinks she can.
A lot of Kabo’s doubts come into play, but Wanda seems to act like they’re already a couple, so when he gets butthurt over something, plus she gets jealous (and with good reason - the scene in question is so intense it nearly makes the pages sweat), it makes things awkward as all get out (or does it?).
It’s the strong personal investment and work going into making these characters interesting that stands out. From the mighty On-chan to Iori, the club’s other token male presence who really shines this time out, everybody is pretty fascinating here with no bit parts.
And the dancing is absolutely on fire yet again. The artwork in this series just kills every scene with its stylized nature and especially the parts where these characters are in motion. One of Iori’s numbers goes the distance and is an absolute jaw-dropper in how it’s portrayed on the page. It is an absolute all-timer Manga Moment for my money.
Then, when the dust settles, it turns out that just because you aren’t great at what you were hoping for, well, doesn’t mean you don’t have a special talent for something else. It’s a good message wrapped up in a gorgeous bow. This is the kind of battle manga I can get behind.
This is a story about passions and youthful ones at that, so seeing the author expressing this so well and the way both the writing and art mesh together into this wonderfully put-together story is a real treat. There wasn’t a moment of this where I wasn’t glued to the pages.
5 stars - my face lit up when I saw this on my weekly release list and I stayed up way too late reading it. This story absolutely loves dance and it does an exemplary job showing you why you’d want to in the first place.
This was another fun volume, with more dance styles brought in. I am enjoying this, and the characters all are really passionate about dance. The relationships continue to be good, and I like how welcoming the dance club is.
This volume is very heavy on the competitive dancing stuff and it looks awesome. The detail in the sequences is fantastic. Kabo and Wanda and becoming some of my favorite characters in a story and they continue to develop and grow in this volume. We also get some dance battles at the club and they are equally great. This serious is giving off serious Blue Lock vibes for me and I love that series too. So glad I discovered this series.
More of an On-chan centric volume, which is completely fine with me since she's my favourite character. Listening to the soundtrack whilst reading this is truly the best way to experience this series. Kabo and Wanda are all super cute and this is still a wonderful tale of someone finding an outlet of expression when their speech is impeded. The art is killer in this volume, too.
I think this manga is an excellent illustration of how you don’t need forced drama between characters to move a plot along. The characters all love dancing and find different ways to express themselves and to grow!
My library doesn’t have any more volumes of this series… fingers crossed that they’ll get more in the future!
Ahhh I've been thoroughly enjoying this series more than I would ever like to admit. The story, the art, everything is amazing and done very intricately. This series keeps on getting better and better too and I hope this series continues to soar to higher places. Thank you Coffee-sensei!
