It went on 'below the radar' creating a global network of bases and conflicts to advance their long-term goal of Full Spectrum Dominance, the total control of the land, sea, air, space, outer space and cyberspace. Their methods included control of propaganda, use of NGOs for regime change, Color Revolutions to advance NATO east, and a vast array of psychological and economic warfare techniques, a Revolution in Military Affairs as they termed it. The events of September 11, 2001 would allow an American President to declare a war on an enemy who was everywhere and nowhere, who justified a Patriot Act that destroyed that very freedom in the name of the new worldwide War on Terror. This book gives a disturbing look at that strategy of Full Spectrum Dominance.
Frederick William Engdahl is an American writer based in Germany. He identifies himself as an "economic researcher, historian and freelance journalist." He is known for his views that the September 11 attacks, the Arab Spring and the theory of global warming are all conspiracies. He has written extensively for the LaRouche movement, Russia Today and GlobalResearch.
This book by William Engdahl succinctly explains the neo-conservative, neo-liberal paranoia. The thesis is simple and derives from Zbignew Brerezinski’s The Grand Chessboard. Zbignew had taken this idea from British strategist Halford Mackinder. Mackinder argued (quite rightly, if with somewhat devilish conclusions) that whoever controlled the Eurasian landmass would control the world’s pivot-point. Zbigniew updated the thesis: America should seek such dominance in Eurasia as to make Russia her vassal. The unspoken conclusion (actually, Paul Wolfowitz was quite outspoken on this point): if Russia does not wish to be a vassal, use a nuclear first-strike against her.
With those cheerful thoughts in mind, Engdahl offers us a very helpful hermeneutical grid per US geopolitics: anytime America acts in Europe or Asia, she is doing so in order to 1) control key oil transits; 2) weaken China; and 3) weaken Russia. In order to do this the Anglo-Americans must employ a number of strategies against ornery states like Russia, China, Serbia, Myanmar, and Iran.
The most successful of American strategies has been the “Color Revolutions.” Drawing off of the psychology of both terrorism and rock concerts, CIA operatives were able to finance and delegitimize social nationalist regimes. This worked in Serbia, Ukraine, and Georgia.
Understandably, this will not work with larger states. In that case, just accuse them of human rights violations. This is the primary goal with China. W.E. does a good job explaining the geopolitical importance of Tibet (the Tibetan plateau is the source of the seven major rivers the give water to most of Asia), Myanmar (50% of Chinese oil imports pass through the Straits of Malacca). Obviously, if America can sever Tibet from China and/or control Myanmar, it can deliver a crushing choke-hold on China from which it will likely not recover. With the removal of China, American control over Eurasia is guaranteed.
W.E. then gives a disturbing analysis of American nuclear capabilities. The technological specifics aside, keeping in line with the Zbigniew-Halford thesis, the goal of American nuclear capabilities is to maintain American dominance in the world. We need to be very clear about the Wolfowitz doctrine: America should pre-emptively destroy any country that could pose a threat to American political interests. This is the equivalent of killing some random guy on the street just so he can’t kill you some day. I’m not making this up. This is the morality and logic of the people in charge.
There are some limitations to this book, though the overall thrust is accurate. W.E. is only focusing on the American infrastructure. He doesn’t do the same kind of work as Joseph Farrell or Jim Marrs.
Since 1989, the Pentagon has sought what they call “Full Spectrum Dominance” (FSD) - to control to not only the planet, but also cyber space and even outer space. The theory was that since the Soviet Union ended, the US could pursue FSD unopposed. All the US had to do was keep up military expenditures and readiness as though the Cold War never ended. Instead of the obvious peace dividend when the USSR fell, the US forced “shock therapy on the former socialist centrally planned state economies” - basically, turning countries into shitholes while skimming money off them. The rape of the former Soviet bloc under the IMF benefited George Soros, Marc Rich, Credit Suisse and Chase as well as turncoat ex-KGB and Communist Party functionaries who seized state-owned assets under Yeltsin and suddenly became billionaire oligarchs. But all this new wealth was in dollars and Washington believed the Russian oligarchs could thus be controlled. “As many Russians saw it, economic shock therapy was a strange way for the West to show gratitude for the end of the Warsaw Pact.”
To make matters worse, Bush II in 2001 provoked Russia further by pulling the US from the ABM treaty. The Warsaw Pact was ended for no reason other than because Russia naively trusted the West’s assurances. The US was now projecting imperial power economically under the guise of “colonial liberation” to avoid the stigma of British-style colonization. Economic coercion worked as long as the dollar was considered the “de facto world currency” and enough countries seemed to require US military protection. US foreign policy placed total control over Russia over other goals.
Did you know that “the first (US) plan for a nuclear war against the Soviet Union, including a pre-emptive strike, was completed just two months after Hiroshima and Nagasaki”? In 1904, Halford Mackinder presented a British policy paper saying that who ever controlled Russia would control the world and the British Foreign office agreed with him. No one bothered to ask why Russia (which then controlled Russia) wasn’t then controlling the world. But lots of US statemen like Kissinger and Brzezinski (who both spent decades sucking up to the Rockefellers) were deeply influenced by Mackinder and his theory still deeply guides US foreign policy towards Russia. When Brzezinski wrote about keeping “the barbarians from coming together” in his “The Grand Chessboard” book, he meant Russia, China, and the nations of Central Asia. Mackinder wrote in 1943 that if the Soviet Union is seen as the conqueror of Germany, she will “rank as the greatest land power on the globe.” Such paranoia then led Churchill to push Eisenhower towards a full-scale war against the Soviet Union by using 12 captured German divisions “as cannon fodder to destroy Russia once and for all.” In a rare moment of clarity, Washington sensibly viewed Churchill’s proposal as “too risky.” But the reason was that Washington instead needed the threat of a “hostile” Soviet Union in order to conduct its future war against nationalism (see Noam Chomsky) under the propaganda guise of the Cold War.
Even so, in 1945, President Truman ordered Eisenhower “to prepare secret plans for a nuclear strike on some 20 cities of the Soviet Union, (even though) it was known that the Soviet Union posed no direct or immediate threat to the United States.” Funny for decades we are repeatedly told ad nauseum to hate some other country who pose no threat to us, by our leaders and captured media. Mackinder also feared the power of Russia getting together with China, yet today the US seems (like a budget porn producer) strongly determined to drive Russia and China into each other’s arms.
We were all told the Cuban Missile Crisis was a response to the Soviets provoking us with missile installations in Cuba – intentionally never mentioned to us was that the Soviets were merely responding to an “earlier US decision to place Thor and Jupiter nuclear missiles in Turkey” (a NATO ally) pointed at the USSR. Isn’t playing “nuclear chicken” by lying and fear mongering fun? Anyway, critical to understand is that the Pentagon’s goal of Full Spectrum Dominance requires the destruction of Russia (which is why we all hear Putin is the new Hitler, while Kissinger and Bush’s far worse crimes are conveniently forgotten). When the US put missiles in Poland pointing at Russia, in 2007 Germany’s Chancellor Schroeder said the US was pursuing “an insane encirclement policy against Russia.” The US already hated Schroeder because he dared show vocal opposition to the Iraq War.
Swarming: Fred Emery in 1967 first wrote of swarming crowds, then the RAND Corporation noticed actual similar techniques in the 1968 Paris student uprisings that could be emulated. Those techniques were called “swarming” like a swarm of bees. They were non-violent calls for change. Such swarming eventually led to the removal of President Charles de Gaulle. US organizations (NGO’s) funded with millions of taxpayer dollars” then “moved into place to create a synthetic movement for ‘non-violent change’.” All patterned on non-violent calls for change. Washington Post writer Michael Dobbs found that the US bought the removal of Milosevic for only $41 million through the offices of US Ambassador Miles. Our tax dollars went to plaster some 2.5 million stickers (which translated said “he’s finished”) on Serbia walls along with donating 5,000 cans of spray paint to write anti-government graffiti on Serbian walls. If you know history, you might say, but didn’t the US support Milosevic in the early 1990’s? Why yes, it did, but the US routinely turns against old allies like Saddam or Noriega when they have outlived their usefulness. History may well one day call the US-funded removal of Milosevic, “the first poll-driven, focus group tested revolution.” Using our taxpayer dollars to turn other countries into shitholes; what a noble goal.
The US apparently saw the innovations of young people and said “We stodgy short-haired types too can innovate! Let’s shamelessly conceal coup d’etats under the guise of non-violence! We can label them with innocuous names to make them sound cute - Arab Spring sounds a lot like Irish Spring, which is that great smelling soap! And CIA can instigate lots of sweet-sounding Color Revolutions which will have liberals shouting, ‘I hope the next Color Revolution gets called Teal or Plaid – because I just love teal and plaid’.” And so, it was that our faux-Christian nation perfected techniques for ‘democratically’ getting rid of any opponent in any country that didn’t heartily kiss our ass, while comically keeping us, the electorate, once again asleep.
Howard Perlmutter comes along and says, in other countries protests you should add fake NGO’s to your swarming techniques to hide CIA involvement And so, Color Revolutions were born. Greek oligarch’s centuries back, knew the people in a democracy could potentially turn on their leader, but the CIA thought, how can the state selfishly exploit that? Manipulate people power so they happily work against their own best interest? Why not have our US oligarchy removing democratically elected leaders in other countries bloodlessly and shamelessly for profit and power grabbing – and ZERO taxpayer awareness – could the Mafia do the CIA Color Revolution con better? Just like successful touring rock stars, the extremely well-financed (through NGO’s) Color Revolution con was taken on the road with tour-de-force performances in Georgia (Rose), Ukraine (Orange), Tibet (Crimson), Myanmar (Saffron), and elsewhere. Faux Christians weaponizing human rights for Full Spectrum Dominance. That’s the ticket.
The Orange Revolution in Ukraine (where banners, balloons and flags were intentionally all orange) made Ukraine more of a pro-NATO satellite. I wonder if the names of Color Revolutions are chosen by the availability of large amounts of fabric and paint at wholesale in that color? I see some bespectacled Charles Nelson Reilly type on a CIA couch somewhere going, “I see this next Revolution as Mauve with hints of Aubergine.”
In the 50’s the CIA had to pay off phony protestors and hand them slogans and banners in Iran to overthrow democratically elected Mossadegh, but that was too easily traced back to the CIA. Every scumbag sociopath knows when you do really reprehensible shit, you are better off with the plausible deniability of using intermediaries (front organizations) to launder/obscure your evil actions. Didn’t the Mafia teach us anything?
CIA technique: “We’ll put you in power if you maintain a favorable business climate for us.” Then the CIA trains that country’s security apparatus to crack down on enemies of US business, who are then intentionally mislabeled as communists. You remember this from events in Chile and Argentina (the place that isn’t supposed to cry for you). Loser Truman created the CIA in 1947 – he wanted a force freed from congressional oversight – the only curtain needed to separate the people from its nation’s odious actions soon became the catch-all words ‘national security.’ A cheap-assed cloaking device powered by fear of prison and relentless PR. Today, wherever there is a US-led coup, you will also find the NED (National Endowment for Democracy) working in that country. In 2004, the same CIA-funded NED was behind the coup in Venezuela against Chavez. All these US-financed coups were simply bids for Full Spectrum Dominance. Do you think the Taliban were removed for “democracy” or to better install US pipeline control across Central Asia? Russia must be under the thumb of the US, or the US can’t control Asia; our leaders want it dismembered and de-constructed and sold off to the highest bidder. In WWII, the Nazi’s wanted all Russians dead so that their land would then serve as Lebensraum for Aryans. Today, the US wants all Russians not dead but impoverished (through Austerity) so that all profits can directly flow to our 1% and we the American People can lick our 1%’s ball sack for any trickle-down.
Russia is the second biggest oil producer on the planet; we could ethically pay them a fair price for what we need, or could secretly take over the country and its profits through hook-and-crook – which path do you think we are taking? We are taught to hate Putin because he is proven too popular to be removed by a Color Revolution. And so, he must be vilified, as though he was personally responsible for Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib and for crimes equaling those of Kissinger. The US tried to replace Putin with Khodorkovsky but Putin saw that coming and arrested him fast – Khodorkovsky had promised to Putin to never engage in politics then later broke that promise.
“The creation of AFRICOM was Washington’s response to its increasing loss of control over Africa’s raw materials.” This was due to well-founded fears that China was being financially nicer than the US in negotiating with Africa. Can’t have countries being nicer to each other than we are – how dare they? Who does China think it is? Cuba? As Noam often says, the US historically hates the “threat of a good example.” Africa was being forced to choose between continued IMF/US austerity or billions of dollars in interest-free aid – what a tough choice. “Within weeks of Beijing’s 2006 reception for heads of more than 40 African nations, George W. Bush signed the Presidential Order creating AFRICOM.” I picture George writing on his napkin: AFRICOM = Africa Financially Rendered Into Corporations Obsequious to Me. US Intelligence agencies historically target any country deemed to be ‘uncooperative’ – first our media attacks them, then our NGO’s get involved in the smear. Just keep it from coming back to the US and biting it in the ass.
Claiming genocide in Darfur (the US was the only country to claim it) was “a huge orchestrated charade” to obscure the huge oil reserves discovered there to which China had been granted rights. China had been in on the oil discovery. The US needed the false charges of genocide to stick if it was to bring UN/NATO troops into the oil fields. China was offering Africa soft loans with no interest to build roads, hospitals and schools while the IMF was only offering endless austerity. With so many strings attached by the IMF and World bank to African nations for loans, no wonder African nations thought they were treated like marionettes by the US. The US financed the secession of South Sudan from Sudan because of Darfur’s huge energy reserves. Skip humanitarianism, saving Darfur meant saving Darfur for US business interests. The US has a military base in Chad and Sao Tome/Principe which strengthens US military presence in the Sudan region. China is also getting oil from Chad.
The Malacca Strait is a critical narrow shipping channel, 50,000 vessels use it annually, and it’s a choke point for China’s energy supply. In 2007, Myanmar’s biggest source of income was gas exporting. Myanmar’s 2007 Saffron Revolution was an attempt by the US to stop the Myanmar/China pipeline which would lessen China’s dependence on the Malacca Strait.
The Dalai Lama had a tutor who was a member of the SS and who was his life-long friend. “The Dalai Lama urged that (ex-dictator) Pinochet NOT be extradited to Spain where he would stand trial for crimes against humanity.” Michael Parenti wrote that “during the 1950s and 60s, the CIA actively backed the Tibetan cause with arms, military training, money, air support, and all sorts of other help.” “In 1959, the CIA helped the Dalai Lama to flee to Dharamsala, India where he has lived ever since.” He received millions of dollars from CIA front groups like the NED. US funding led to “wholly unsubstantiated claims of genocide against Tibet” to embarrass China. The US interest in Tibet can be easily traced not to protecting the Dalai Lama, but the $1.8 trillion of mineral riches in the region, as well as Tibetan control over water – Tibet is the source of water for 2 billion people. We learned from Watergate, to understand why things happen – just follow the money not the propaganda and it will all make sense. The US is playing with fire whenever it attacks China: China has $1.8 trillion of US dollar reserves and could “bring the dollar to its knees by selling only a small portion of its US debt on the market.”
The Pentagon no longer talks about ‘wars’ but uses the term ‘conflicts’ because ‘wars’ require involving Congress. The US defended the opium fields of Afghanistan not unlike the way the CIA earlier protected the drug routes of the Meo tribesmen of Laos to traffic heroin the CIA used profits from to fund covert ops. Iraq is less than one-third the size of Alaska, yet by 2006, the US had built 14 permanent military bases there. Luckily all humans love having their nation occupied by hostile invaders, especially those clearly building permanent bases, so this caused no resistance problems at all. Controlling economies these days is far cheaper than controlling entire nations by force; follow the money.
JFK was given deliberately false intel that there was a missile gap and the Russians were somehow ahead; this info JFK used to beat Nixon in the election. When JFK found out he was lied to, he developed a “deep distrust of the Pentagon and CIA.” Bush II’s pre-emptive doctrine was mis-named. Pre-emption should mean attacking someone who is already poised to attack. Bush II meant it as attacking someone for future crimes somewhere in the future. The same extreme definition Obama used when he happily ordered the murder of a 16-year-old US citizen for vague future crimes (incinerated by drone in Yemen along with his school friends and no doubt guilty-as-hell restaurant staff).
After 9/11, Mayor Giuliani arrested several firemen trying to recover their dead colleagues from the rubble. Such compassion. Giuliani demanded the 9/11 evidence be shipped overseas as scrap metal. A 1946 classified US Congressional Hearing established that FDR knew Pearl Harbor was coming days before the attack and did nothing, because he “and his top planners had calculated they would win” the war. On November 26, two weeks before the attack, Churchill warned FDR it was coming and “Roosevelt responded by stripping the fleet at Pearl Harbor of air defenses, to ensure Japanese success”. The author says that only one piece of correspondence between Churchill and FDR is still classified (on grounds of ‘national security’) and that message is the November 26 Pearl Harbor warning to FDR (FSD p.212).
Did you know that Kosovo independence and recognition violated international law and violated UN resolutions - but the US wanted it – so be it. Chosen to head the country by his pal Madeleine Albright was common criminal Hashim Thaci, “a boss of Kosovo organized crime in charge of drug running, extortion, and prostitution.” This nation’s creation was needed to create the massive 1,000-acre US base Camp Bondsteel. You will be delighted to know Bondsteel was “later revealed to be a site of illegal torture prisons.” Your tax dollars at work defiling the teachings of Christ. In return for power and riches, Thaci did exactly what his US puppeteers told him to do. Quelle surprise!
According to the IRC, more than 5,400,000 Congolese civilians have died in the Congo war since 1996. Funny how US media focused on an elusive Darfur genocide but NEVER a much larger Congo genocide. The US blocked any action on the Rwandan genocide (with a toll of as many as a million) until it was over, according to a declassified Pentagon memo. Attention American Citizens: In 2008, a document was released by the US Army Strategic Studies Institute that said if there is enough civil disobedience in the US, it could force “the Department of Defense to radically re-role (sic) for domestic security, population control.” Any disobedience then instantly becomes terrorism – jeopardizing the national security. Patriotic freedom and liberty will then mean the freedom and liberty to say whatever you want, as long as Alexa, your iPhone, computer, TV, and friends can’t hear you.
Pause to salute one’s flag and Toby Keith poster. This was a terrific book, as every book I’ve reviewed by William has been. I have yet to find another author who has followed the CIA role in Color Revolutions this closely. Kudos to the author; I learned a lot.
Reading this book was a total waste of time. First of all, it was poorly written. Many things are repeated throughout the book and the division of ideas in chapters is very annoying. Second, I thought I was reading a well known book (according to ratings), but if you ask me this book shouldn't have left the editorials desk. Finally, this guy is clearly on Putin's payrole. The movement which ousted Millosevic, and those who helped should be thanked. The crimes which he commited during the Balkan wars, make him the worst criminal to sit on the throne, since WW2. Moreover, calling Kosovo a mafia state made me aware that Engdahl doesn't have a clue of the region, and he is served by some propaganda articles sponsored by Putin's Russia and Serbia. All in all, I don't recommend this book to anyone. As a matter of fact, his knowledge makes me question his other books as well.
Full of dates, names, positions, countries, groups, et al which makes it hard to keep track of who is doing what and when and who for, but you'll get the gist. It's all by design anyway. The revolving door of politics, think tanks, military, NGO's is meant to be a Kafka-esque bureaucracy so convoluted the average citizen will glaze over the second its talked about buying them the apathy they wanted from the start. Don't give it to them. Read this book and many more just like it. Learn. Learn some more. Spread that knowledge and inspire others to do the same.
This is a very serious book and well researched; and I would say highly if you understand US History and our relationships with other countries, EU, Russia, China in terms of dominance this book could shock you. William Engdahl has an unusual take on the U.S's position of Full Spectrum Dominance that I could disagree with in many areas, however, his work gives one FULL SPECTRUM PAUSE: Think about that.
The right and the left in the so called US democracy combine to promote what eventually will lead to a new world order run by US military and business interests. This is according to the author . It is achieved by creating external enemies that threaten America's freedoms ie. Al Qaeda and scaring the populace to demand military action and at the same time attempts to isolate and weaken rival powers like China and Russia. A book that should be read with an open mind.
Not a conspiracy theory, just factually what the DOD calls its strategy for global financial and military hegemony. Most of what happens in our foreign policy is in the service of maintaining this agenda. Currently the main manifestations are attempts to encircle Russia and China and thwart their efforts to defend themselves and trade freely with other nations.
I always knew America's foreign policy was bad, but I didn't realize it had gotten this it of control or how insanely off balance world military power is in America's favor. Awestrikingly horrifying. We're in the final chapters of an all out play which is almost certain to end tragically.
This is a superb work that provides a big picture on US Terror State's imperialism.
For those too lazy to read a book about each US Terror State's aggression against each of its victims , they can have an all-in-one here.
Congo, Venezuela, Iran, Afghanistan, Sudan, you name it. The main examples of US-driven barbarism in modern times are all mencioned in this book (even the less known), as well as the main US organizations used as tools of bloody imperialism:
- NED, OTPOR, RAND, IRI, DNI, Open Society Foundation, Freedom House, Soros Foundation, Albert Einstein Institute, Reform and Opening China, Tavistock Institute, Rockefeller Foundation, CIA, etc.
Another interesting aspect (for the attentive reader) is how the author exposes the facts in a way that leads to an obvious source for all this madness: the Straussians guys (the not so deep "deep state") running the US political show.
WOW! For starters, this author once again has amazed me with his research. There are as many pages of end-notes and footnotes as there are of text. Second, I am pleased that the FOIA law enables determined researchers to obtain important records. Third, declassified government documents are a treasure trove of information.
Finally, I continue to be amazed at how government officials record all the details, no matter how damning (sort of remindful of Tricky Dick)
This book is a real eye opener. We were far closer to nuclear war during Bush's administration than anyone could imagine.
The shape we are in as a nation is far more serious than even cynical ME thought. And it has very little to do with Obama, by the way.
Oh, and I was shocked to learn that Roosevelt knew of the Japanese plans to bomb Pearl Harbor two weeks prior,, and purposely allowed our Navy to be put in harm's way.......
This is another book that should be required reading.....
Full Spectrum Dominance is a brilliant, clear, and forceful book about US foreign policy. Eurasia is ours through “color” revolutions, “swarming” coups and so-called NGOs with peaceful-sounding names. We even paid for 5,000 cans of spray paint used by Serb graffiti subversives. Our group AFRICOM, headquartered in Engdahl’s Germany, includes 53 African countries. The Congo stretch of the Great Rift has coltan (we want for circuit boards) and oil, so a Congalese 7th Day Adventist trained at Ft. Leavenworth led a genocide of 5,000,000 in which Congo was balkanized, partitioned into ethnic States. YODA, a.k.a. Andre W. Marshal, has a cameo appearance here. He devised the bogus missile “gap,” war with spy satellites, drugs, computer viruses and unmanned vehicles for urban war.
I would be very much interested to read his book (when it eventually comes out) about Ukrainian Revolution, grounded Malaysian aircraft, sanctions against Russia, Crimea reunification - and all those things which marked up the 2014. With Williams'talent this plot could be even more stunning then Full Spectrum
