Find me on Facebook.

I was born in the beautiful county of Cornwall in southwestern England and grew up in a small village there. I return frequently to visit family and friends but especially to savor the cool rainy weather and hot tea. After school I joined the Royal Navy and served for nearly six years. I held varying jobs from being the only woman in the staff of a sports center to arranging social engagements for the Captain of the base. My last assignment was to Denmark where I thought I would spend a wild two years in Copenhagen only to discover I was being sent to a NATO Headquarters in a quiet town on the Jutland Peninsula. I was only disappointed for a while as I met my own tall, dark, handsome stranger there - a US Naval Officer named Richard who became my husband.

That was the beginning of an itinerant life as from Denmark we went to Sicily where we had our first son. Then it was on to Monterey, California and the birth of our second son. From there we headed to Patuxent River, Maryland where we had our third son. Richard's last assignment was to London where we spent a wonderful three years. Retiring from the Navy he took a job in Brentwood, Tennessee near where he grew up. Now he's retired for the 2nd time and I'm still writing!

I have always been a voracious reader, even at 5 years old my school reports show a keen interest in English and very little in math - some things never change! Although I enjoyed writing in school it wasn't until 2001 that I was tempted to take a creative writing class at a local recreation center which has sparked my new career.

I hope you enjoy reading my work as much as I enjoy writing it so sit back, make yourself a cup of tea and enjoy a break from everyday life.

Herring Bay in Cornwall was where Paula Havers had grown up and left for the US thirty five years previously. She wouldn’t talk about it to her daughter, Essy, so she had no idea why Paula hadn’t returned, but Essy was combining a job with meeting her Aunt Molly, her mother Paula’s sister. The bitterness was still there, although Aunt Molly wouldn’t tell Essy anything either. And when Essy met Ruan she discovered the past issues with her mother were connected to Ruan’s mother and long missing father. Ruan’s dad had disappeared three days after Paula – what was the connection? Did Ruan know – after all, he would have been only five years old when his father vanished?

As Essy made her way into the residents of Herring Bay’s hearts, she could feel the softening in attitudes. She could also feel her and Ruan’s connection growing stronger. Essy wanted to make everything right for the two families – but was it too late for that? Was it better to leave the past where it belonged?

The Summer to Remember in Herring Bay by Angela Britnell is a sweet romance set in the heart of Cornwall with an intriguing mystery to spice up the story. I enjoyed Essy’s character, and although she was a little over the top at times, her heart was in the right place. Bringing Herring Bay back to life was a challenge that she and Ruan faced together. Recommended.

With thanks to ChocLit Publishing for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

Another new book by my favourite Tennessee/Cornwall romance writer. Sometimes her books are set in Tennessee and sometimes Cornwall. This time we are back in England as Essy is on assignment to track down a unique gift for work and at the same time solve some family drama. One of the things I loved is that Essy has no dramatic back story. Our hero Ruan has fled back to his hometown after becoming the victim of sexual harassment but even then he's not using it as a way to avoid further relationships. Both main characters are quite straightforward leaving their families to be the ones to cause the chaos. There's mixed messages and lies throughout their parents histories that slowly resolve over the summer until we all get the happy endings we want in our romance books.

Every time I read one of Angela's books I end up wanting to hop on a plane to Tennessee or take a trip to the South West and this time is no exception. Herring Bay is as much a character as the humans even if it is a struggling village. Another fantastic read and I can't wait for the next one.

This was one of those very-rare-for-me books lately that completely swept me away in the story and made me read it fully through in about two sittings. There were many chapters, but each one is relatively short and so engaging that the book just breezes by.

There were quite a few elements to this story–so many different character arcs that made me root for so many of the characters and their happiness.

From long-lost family, to discovering who you are and not being ashamed of it, to finding love in the last place you expected, and to forgiveness–this story has it all.

I’m thoroughly impressed by the authors ability to weave so many great lessons in one book. And all the while keeping me entertained and so far from bored that I found myself thinking about this book when I wasn’t able to read it.

Britnell is an amazing storyteller, one whom I can’t wait to read more from.

A cute book where I was as curious as a cat to know the secrets hidden in the past. Author Angela Britnell sure did know how to make me smile on a rainy afternoon.

Essy had come to Cornwall on business and to meet her aunt since her mum was not talking about the reason why she had left Herring Bay and not looked back. Ruan had his own secrets, and his mother didn’t want Essy to be in Cornwall. What the heck had happened?

Having read her books previously, the author was a big favorite of mine. She kept me hopping in the book with those indirect dialogues. My mind went zapping, trying to solve the clues. I felt like a gossip queen who wanted to poke those characters and force them to reveal. Quite a surprise it was, the secret and me reacting so much in a romantic book.

Both Essy and Ruan were great characters, their banter was amusing. But my heart belonged to Essy, she was just so sweet. Their time together caused quite a flutter. She was quite determined to get to the truth.

I loved Angela’s writing. It was quaint and loving with British words peppered through it. The story held my interest from beginning to end. A beautiful way to spend a lazy afternoon. Tea, biscuits, and Angela’s new book.

Lazy, lazy writing. Any conflict established in one chapter is immediately resolved in the first line of the next. No character development. Plot points that are just stupid. I thought I’d enjoy this more because I love a trashy romcom, but this was just lazy and boring and the characters were pretty uninspired. Don’t read.

I couldn't keep track of all the characters, they were all so similar and 2 dimensional. The whole feud seemed ridiculous and I didn't even like Ruan. Silly nonsense.

Loved, Loved, Loved this book!! It's full of family secrets that that have hung over Herring Bay for years, leaving deep wounds for many. So when Essy travels there to discover the past her mother is very reluctant to share, she reopens those wounds and it threatens new friendships.

Essy stands out anyway as she's an American and they don't get many of those visiting Herring Bay! She also is a big fan of bright colours and finds a fellow 'colour' fan in Ruan. He's a local who has recently returned home and finds himself doing various handyman jobs which brings him into contact with Essy as she stays with her Aunt at her B&B that is in need of a bit of modernising!

The more time Essy and Ruan spend together, the more the pasts of their families begin to bubble to the surface and I loved finding out about the goings on of the past - and surprised along with the characters to discover that what they had been led to believe was quite different to the actual truth. Isn't that always the way!?! We build up an image of a situation or person based on what we're told, only to find that shattered when the truth comes to light!

I loved everything about this book! From the relatable characters wanting to make sense of who they are, to the wonderful setting and twists and turns of the revelations! A must read!!

The author has written another lovely romantic story, but there is a lot more going on than just romance. I love the banter between Essy and Ruan, but they also need to face some serious talking. Some things have happened in the past between their families and maybe their love can glue again what has been broken so badly or will they have to throw in the towel because some things just cannot be mended?

Love is meant for all ages, but lies and jealousy are standing in the way of happiness. Not everything that happens is what is seems, but you are too stubborn to see it in any other way. Sometimes you confuse the feelings you have for someone with love and you end up feeling miserable and hurting other people too even though you never meant to.

You should always try to solve your problems, but often the feelings are still to raw and time goes by. You forsake happiness and live with the regrets. It’s never too late to make up, right? You can consider this story a textbook case of how it is done. 🙂

A very enjoyable read. 4 stars

Family secrets, beatiful scenery and a little romance awaits you in Herring Bay!
This was a cozy romance read that came with a while of mystery - Essy Havers has found herself in Herring Bay, Cornwall - the village where her mother grew up but she doesn't talk about her life before moving to America. What could have happened to make her mother not talk about her past?

Essy's business specialises in finding things - so whilst on a trip for a client she decides to find out about her mothers life at the same time, though I don't think she was expecting to fall in love in the process. I really enjoyed the story, the setting and the characters, the mystery surrounding her mother and a married man all those years ago I kinda figured out, but I loved watching it all play out.

Wow a great book and so well written and great characters and a summer not to be forgotten about. Full of romance and finding family things out that have been a mystery for years.
Essy is trying to find out about her mothers past and why she left family behind in a lovely seaside village and never gone back. She arrives at her aunts house but when people start finding out who she is will they warm to her or not and will she think she’s made a mistake in coming. Can she work her way through everything and be happy and find romance or will it be a total mistake.

I read this whilst relaxing in the sunshine and it just seemed so appropriate and heartwarming, I thoroughly enjoyed escaping to Cornwall (and Wales) in this lovely read. It has family mysteries, secrets, surprises and romances in a small, seaside community.

Essy Havers has always been intrigued by her Mum's background and her home in Herring Bay, despite her Mum refusing to tell her much about her life there and why she left, travelling to live in Tennessee. Her job gives her the opportunity to visit the area and she goes to visit her Aunt Molly, who invites her to stay with her. Herring Bay is a small, run-down community but Essy never guessed how the locals would react when they found out who she is. Lots of people obviously remember her Mum - and not very fondly, either. There's definitely a mystery about why she left and Essy is determined to get to the bottom of it . . . . but just what will she uncover? Are some secrets better left unknown? Why does Vera Pascow seem to hate Essy?

This is a story packed with family dramas from decades ago, secrets that Essy and Vera's son, Ruan, decide to work together to uncover. It is a story in which a community is brought back together, fresh starts are made by many, there's even a second chance romance! It is a heartwarming story that kept me turning the pages. I really hope we get to visit this community again in future as I'd love to know how the project progresses, the impact on the community, what happens to several individuals, etc! That actually gives you an idea of how well this story draws the reader in without revealing any spoilers, I hope! I have absolutely no hesitation in highly recommending this engaging and highly entertaining story.

Thank you to the publishers for the copy of this book which I have voluntarily read and honestly reviewed.

Essy doesn’t know much about her mother’s past but when an opportunity to mix work with a little investigating arises, she hot foots over the sea to Cornwall where she is hoping to discover more. Confused by the reception she receives as the locals figure out who she is, she becomes determined to figure out the events from the past and make amends but can she win over the people of Herring Bay or should some things be well left alone?
Angela Britnell is one of my absolute favourite writes of feel good romance with wonderful characters and this new novel does not disappoint. And the cover is just adorable.
Essy and Ruan are just lovely characters and Angela always has this knack of making the reader feel completely involved in a character’s life. The banter and chemistry between the main characters was a delight and even the background ensemble are written with such detail and thought that despite a small role, the bring a to the story. The backstory for the characters really adds depth and sucks the reader into their experiences and I loved that the focus on this was Ruan rather than Essy.
In addition to the romantic aspect of this novel, I loved the gentle mystery about what happened to their parents. Throughout the book layers of the past are revealed giving the reader a tantalising taste of what had happened. I enjoyed speculating and guessing throughout the novel.
Yet another absolutely smashing novel from Angela Britell with loveable and realistic characters and a great plot to weave a romance into. Highly recommended.

This book was a summer delight. It was light and full of cornish treats. The book centres around Essy and Ruhn, two strangers who family pasts are dramatically ensnared. His family broken apart by a secret whilst her mother fled to America to escape. But this Romeo and Juliet inspired fued doesn't stop these star crossed; well sand crossed, lovers. And dare I say it, the journey was enjoyable and adorable.

Essy is a headstrong, knows what she likes sort of girl, with a passion for colour and a personality unmatched in this coastal town. Ruhn has a flare for fashion, an inspiring architect trying to escape his London memories, though it is his home, he never really fitted in. They are both big personalities that you would notice down the pub, and I love that about them. You can see from the start the chemistry they are trying to deny and it makes the journey so much more enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this summer read. Like I have said before, I have really gone out of my comfort zone this year and taken on more romance that I never would normally pick up. And I am enjoying it. This lovely little book had a romance worthy of a foot flick, one that would have you swooning in the sand. It had inspiration, family's reconnecting and communities being brought together. It is a heartwarming romance about families building bridges, forgiveness and most of all, unexpectant tourists falling for the locals. I really enjoyed this little summer read and hope you do too.

Another lovely book from Angela Britnell, which combines Cornwall where the author was born and Tennessee, where she now lives.

Our lead female character Essy Havers runs a company which specialises in helping people to track things down, anything from China pieces to vintage clothing.

Essy has long been curious about her mother's past, and her Cornish roots, so naturally when the opportunity arises, she jumps on a plane from Franklin Tennessee to Heathrow airport and then onto Herring Bay in Cornwall, where her mother grew up.

When she arrives in the bay, Essy is a little confused by the reactions of the villagers when they find out who she is, or to be more specific, whose daughter she is.

Essy begins to think that her decision to visit Cornwall might just be a huge mistake, but in actual fact it turns into a summer she will never forget, and she finds the most important thing of all : herself.

I actually only discovered this author last year, so by no means have I had the opportunity to read everything that she has written, but I'm very much looking forward to reading more from her soon.

When Essy is asked by a client to visit Cornwall she jumps at the chance as although she is American her mother grew up in Cornwall and her family still live there. When she arrives she goes to visit her Aunt Molly who invites her to stay much to her delight..... perhaps she can finally find out about the secrets that caused her mother to flee to America at the age of 17. She soon finds out that her mother left with a married man and the two families have had a feud ever since....... and unfortunately it is the family of Ruan the gorgeous architect with the mad clothes that she is so attracted to..... but is everything as it seems or are there more secrets to be uncovered?

A lovely story set in my favourite part of the country. I read it in one sitting as I couldn't put it down, loving all of the characters and the intrigue surrounding the past, perfect book for sitting out in the sunshine to read wishing you were there in Cornwall

Stopped at 53%. Too much sexual detail.

Amazon synopsis:
When Essy Havers arrives in the tiny Cornish village of Herring Bay, she feels like a fish out of water.

Growing up in Tennessee, she jumps at the chance of a new adventure connecting with her English roots.

Because Herring Bay is where her mother grew up — she left the village when she was just seventeen and never looked back. Essy has never understood why.

But life in Cornwall gets off to a rocky start. Essy instantly clashes with the brooding and ruggedly handsome Ruan, who doesn’t seem to take kindly to strangers. Or maybe he just has some family issues of his own . . .

Essy is determined to unravel the mystery behind her mother’s quick departure. Instead, she discovers her past is intertwined with Ruan’s, and the two reluctantly team up to find the truth.

But can they put aside their differences for the sake of their stroll down memory lane? And perhaps, along the way, walk the path to love?

A story full of family secrets set in a Cornish village by the sea.
As this is an Angela Britnell book, one of the main characters obviously comes from Tennessee. ^^ This time it's Essy. Her mother was born in Cornwall and spent all her childhood there but never went back and always avoids talking about it. I really enjoyed following Essy as she met people who knew her mother and tried to get answers to her many questions. I also really like Ruan, the local man she (of course) falls in love with, and the additional questions raised by his father's disappearance around the time when Essy's mother left. Their similar sense of fashion (they both love to wear bright colours) may be the only thing they have in common at first, but it turns out they work very well together.

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Summer to Remember

I really loved this book and couldn’t put it down. The first half was better than the second, which was good, and many secrets were revealed and a happy ending left you feeling satisfied (apart from all the wasted years). The reason I gave it 4 Stars rather than 5 was the fact that once Ruan and Essy basically became a couple
there was so much of the “couldn’t keep their hands off each other” and too many visits to their bedroom, and all the thoughts about it in between. Yes sexual attraction is a reality, but it’s not my idea of a good read. Just personal preference. Not sure if I’ll read more, was looking at the Penhaven ones as I love the west coast of Britain, but I wonder if it will be too similar. I see too many are about an American coming to “town”. But who knows

I was delighted to discover that we are back in Cornwall for Angela Britnell's latest novel. This isn't the chocolate box version you usually visualise. It is a part of the county that has seen better days and is in need of some inspiration. I had the feeling when Essy appeared from Nashville, that she was going to shake the place up a bit. Returning to the place her mother was born, she finds the customs to be pretty foreign but soon meets some interesting characters, particularly Ruan.

Both Essy and Ruan seem to hide behind their armour of brightly coloured clothes. They present a front to the world to fight off intimacy. There are secrets from the past and unrequited relationships to sort out as well as some reappraisals of future lives. This is an uplifting story with a few surprises and a hopeful tone.

In short: A delight to read
Thanks to the author for a copy oof the book

I'm not a big romance reader, but the cover and plot looked interesting. The overall premise was good, lots of entangled characters and stories to keep straight. I enjoyed the setting and descriptions of the towns. Romance was a bit contrived, but isn't it always in these 'Hallmark-esque' tales?
I could have done with less of the 'his voice went raspy/husky/rough' type descriptions. The love scenes were reasonably tame. Some episodes toward the end were glossed over rather abruptly.

Did anyone else wonder how Essy could possibly make a living at her business when she spends a day or two in a month actually working on the project?

My copy (trade paperback) inexplicably had a sub-title of 'Or one to forget?' That was a little off-putting to me since it implies something was going to turn left.

An entertaining enough light summer read. Not bad, but not great.

Essy visits her family in Cornwall when a work opportunity arises she's keen to know why her mother won't talk about her past. Her aunt is pleased and surprised to see her, but the welcome isn't universal. Essy meets Ruan, and they find they have a lot in common. Ruan's family seems tied up with her mother's past, and so they investigate but is this wise?

This is a family mystery story full of angst and secrets. The characters are relatable, and each plays a part in the story. The setting is coastal and well-described and complements a plot with some original touches.

Gentle romance, family mystery and a community that needs mending all make this an enjoyable summer read.

I have already admitted to being a big Angela Britnell fan in other reviews of her books. No change with this one! There is an interesting heroine who is on a mission and a somewhat damaged hero who is not really keen on being part of it to begin with. That many things are not what they seem becomes apparent as the story gradually unfolds. Behind the interpersonal situations and the issues they confront is a community project, which looks at some modern challenges in villages. The lovely descriptions of the Cornish beaches that Essy has to go to will have you planning to visit them. All in all a great read on the surface and more to find when you re-read.

I love Angela's other books which have featured a romance between someone from Cornwall and someone from Tennessee. This one is just as great and features Essy from Tennessee and Ruan from Herring Bay, Cornwall. Essy is visiting the area for a work project but also to investigate why her mother left Herring Bay and what caused the feud between her mother and Ruan's mother. There are problems to overcome but the couple's strong-willed characters help to stop their respective families from being torn apart.
A lovely story of second chances and it shows the importance of being true to yourself.

Her mother left Herring Bay to start a new life in America but never wants to talk about it so Essy hope to het to know her aunt who still lives there and find out more about her mother. She meets Ruan, who also has family secrets and Essy is stunned to find out his secrets are to do with hr mother. With attraction between them, they need to find a way to get through their problems if they are to have any hope of a future together, but with opposition from her aunt and his mum, will they be able to come together? What a smasher! I knew I was going to like this one almost immediately – when she named her SatNav Annabelle – mine is called James ….. I thoroughly enjoyed the read – couldn’t put it down to go to bed, so that was another late night/early morning. The story flows very well, and the fairly obvious ‘secret’ was revealed relatively soon, before I got bored with trying to guess, with a few side issues thrown in – all being resolved most satisfactorily in the end. The sex is more suggested than explicit, so right in my wheelhouse. I have no hesitation in giving it top marks.

This is a very interesting romance set in well described Cornwall. The characters are very well portrayed and believable. I enjoyed following Essy's adventures and tribulations as she visits her mother's birth place. The problems Essy encouters in the small village are both helped and exacerbated by her relationship with Ruan. Family history plays a massive part in the story and is both the beginning and end. This is a real page Turner which I thoroughly enjoyed as I'm sure you will too.

Essy is a professional searcher who is hired to travel to England to collect some sand from beaches her client visited as a child. She takes the opportunity to visit the town her mother where her mother grew up but won’t talk to Essy about it. Essy gets a lot more than she bargained for when she opens up old wounds. Adding to that, she falls for the son of her mother’s enemy, but love conquers all, right?

I really enjoyed reading this book – it was charming and fun to read.

A summery, Cornish romance

Essy arrives in Cornwall from America, seeking sand and photos of the beaches and the reasons for her mother’s estrangement from her family.
She uncovers animosity, secrets and a handsome, flamboyant architect Ruan. Their romance is relatively straightforward but there are other complications along the way as the couple try to unravel past misunderstandings and tackle the rejuvenation of the small Cornish town.
