Lewis and Clark meets Eat, Pray, Love in this tale of one woman fighting to define herself on an expedition into uncharted land.
Thane may be the most lavish of all the Circled Kingdoms, but for a woman the city is a prison surrounded by a seventy-foot-high white wall. No rights, no education, and certainly no chance to leave. Penn's father knew this when he illegally taught his headstrong daughter science, shaping her love of nature and biology. He gave her only one request on his promise to explore the uncharted Farlands in the west.
Yet, Penn struggles after his death. Without his guidance, without him protecting her dreams, she's no one. Only her father's shadow. But the wildness of the Farlands calls and she's willing to risk her own safety to see what lies beyond the wall.
Set in a sweeping world of flora and fauna, both real and imagined, Wild Type composes a love letter to science and nature, to womanhood and the worthwhile struggle.

A fantasy story of a small kingdom, that is surrounded by a wall and no one is supposed to go outside of the wall, because it is unsafe. But Penn, inspired by the stories her father told her, wants to explore what is there and agrees to a bargain with the ruler in order to do so.
What she finds out is shocking and unsettling, and puts her father's death into a new light.
Well-written, a mix of adventure, self-discovery and romance, with an open end, that hints at a possible second book.

This book was really enjoyable. Throughout the story you follow a young woman’s adventure to break free of a life behind a wall, once she does she learns the biggest and most stressful lessons of her life. She is constantly torn between doing what she thinks is right and what her heart and mind are telling her is right.

At first I wasn’t overly fond of the main character Penn, but eventually she grew on me. The President of her land is ridiculous and is the guy you should and will hate, her best friend Rook, is the one I wanted to know more about the entire story.

There were a couple parts during the book that made me feel confused about time periods. The majority of the time you feel like it’s a primitive setting but then there will be modern flairs with technology. At first it didn’t make sense (but it didn’t put me off from the story), after digesting the story it made sense. The lands in which all the people live in are broken into different communities for the lack of a better term, they are all walled kingdoms with rulers. Thane from where the main character is from, has a ruler who keeps his people powerless, homeless, struggling and in fear. With that being said there’s still scientific research and modern technology for some, not all. I couldn’t figure out why, but then it hit me. During a part of the story and dialogue between the President and Penn, you discover that it’s all a power trip and there could and most likely is a world full of wonders and technology beyond the walls but like most narcissistic, power crazed rulers he’s in the belief that fear will keep his people under control. By giving them the bare minimum of food, supplies and education. He can use the fear of mystery beyond the wall to keep the people as slaves and puppets.

This story is full of twists and turns, positive and negative emotions. I’m not sure what genre I would classify this as. It wasn’t overly fantastical or science fiction, perhaps even dystopian. It’s a adventure story that made me want to continue to read, the end hints at a possible continuation which would be neat. If there was no sequel, this is a great standalone.

The writing, the grammar and style were really good. There were just enough words to make you use a dictionary and learn something new but it wasn’t to heavy on big overwhelming phrases and terms. The editing was great as I didn’t see anything that needed attention.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

A unique story of determination, adventure, betrayal, secrets, and coming into strength. Penn is on a quest to fulfill her late fathers dream, a dream they both shared, and he spent his life preparing her for. You get the feeling it’s set in a primitive time, but there’s science and exploration. A ruler that is sly and uses fear to hold power to rule.

I found the story to be slow in the beginning as the author sets the foundation to the story, but the relevance pays off as you progress further into the book. What I enjoyed most about the book was when Penn actually began her adventure into the Farlands. Her determination/struggle kept me interested. What was she going to find. Curious to learn how it’ll play out as secrets are revealed. The end does leave you questioning if there will be a sequel.

Some of the descriptive word choices slowed me down during the reading. While there is a little bit of love story, I didn’t really feel it until closer to the end.

I would rate it more like 3.5 stars because it was a good read.

I am not quite sure what to make of this book. It's kind of fantasy meets Indiana Jones. But the protagonist is an intelligent female in a society that does not value smart women. She is the daughter of the former top researcher in her land. The book was odd in that it seemed like it had some modern things, like microscopes, while other parts of it seemed somewhat primitive. The bulk of the book details a trip that she takes to the Farlands, a place her father always wanted to go but never did before he died. She discovers things about the Farlands... and her father's past. She is in a power struggle with the leader of her area, who rules with an iron fist. Can wild type just define what she finds in the Farlands, or does it come to define her in her quest to be more than her society wants her to be?

I received a free advance copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

I enjoyed the book Wild Type very much. From the start, I was rooting for Penn, the daughter of one of her country's leading scientists. A smart, gutsy and bold individual stuck within a society that does not value women, she embarks on a journey that will defy the odds and expectations of everyone (including Penn's own).
Wild Type's prose are steeped in science, and the love of exploration and learning. As Penn delves deeper and deeper into the Farlands--the forbidden land outside of Thane's imposing white walls, she discovers more than she ever imagined possible.....about the natural world, about the society she'd grown up within, about her father, about love, and loss, and so much more. Nothing is as it seemed. And nothing will ever be the same for Penn, or the lives she touches, again.

I have never read anything by this author before and so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect and I can say that even after reading the book I’m still not quite sure! The author uses a rich array of descriptive words to build her world and her characters. The story is intriguing and original. It’s interesting to follow Penn as she goes against everything that her society expects of her so that she is able to follow her dream and what she considers to be her destiny and purpose.

She is not allowed to learn as she is a girl but her father had other ideas and taught her so much. He wants her to go outside the walls to explore the nature out there. So on his death her he gets her to promise she will go. Will she goes outside the walls?.What will she find out there? Will it be all she expects? See if she goes
