Rona Altrows' short stories go to the core of what it is to be human - to cherish a departed mate beyond reason, to love a child to distraction, to keep the faith with a friend no matter what, to laugh in the face of self-doubt. This collection delivers a humorous yet poignant series of tales told from the perspectives of women.
Rona Altrow's collection of short stories struck a cord. Every character came alive on the page, full of human strengths and foibles. I can't wait for her next collection.
A dear friend gifted me with a copy of this title, and I am ever so grateful. Altrows has a singular way of relating what some might just pass off as mundane life stories, cleverly architecting short stories under the umbrella of one volume that alternately relate and stand alone, building bas reliefs of a few characters mainly set in various neighborhoods of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Now having visited the area, I do want to read her book again, and discover how much the author has truly embedded in her stories. A great work in the vein of local colour.
