She discovered he was her new boss, her landlord, and even the judge at the competition where she had entered her dog. There seemed to be no getting away from the maddening Quinn Tennant.

Edited to add cover info: The hqn cover is by David Craig. Rather busy compared to M&B cover.

M&B Cover by Jørn Beinkamp. On the hardback edition there is a visible but completely unreadable signature—eventually I figured it out but curse you Mills & Boon for flipping the image. Anyway I like the cover a lot; minimal but the strongly slanting figures are so evocative. Is this an irritated man trying to get the attention of a woman studiously avoiding him? Or Mr. Sensitive asking "what's wrong my love"?

Neither! I've read the book and this is definitely Asshat Man disguised as Affable Man manipulating things to his advantage. If he's not telling the heroine she should really be thanking him for whatever, he's insisting she apologize to him for getting upset about one of the many horrible incidences where Quinn passively allows Alix to be humiliated, or quashes her successes by making them all about him, or believes all the OW lies etc. all while grinning because he's not the one with the temper! And she'll get right on that apology too except just now she's heading off to find a private place to bawl her eyes out for like the 7th time.

Spared from being truly infuriating by it's lack of subtlety it's mainly just bad. The scenes at dog obedience competitions which focused on the obedience or lack thereof of both MC's German Short-haired Pointers(GSPs) were interesting though and hero's obvious love for his dog was his single good trait. And though not enough to raise the rating I enjoyed the descriptions of our hero and heroine:

"This man's eyes were small and deep-set. Not piggy-small, but so deep beneath his heavy brows and partially hidden by folds of eyelid that they seemed small." Also they are as bright and green as green fire and green diamonds. Then further admiring descriptions of his coffee colored thatch of chest hair, crooked nose and muscles ending with "Handsome, definitely."

The reader is gifted with fewer but still choice descriptions of Alix. She is tall, has yellow-green eyes and "the type of figure which looked perfect in jeans, with a protuberant bottom that was self-contained without the usual accompaniment of fat thighs." Thank you Mr. Victoria Gordon. I've recently been suggesting to my very own fat cells that they can probably totally redistribute to better locations. This may be just the encouragement they need.

I found the story boring even though I read it at warp speed. I’m obviously a cat person.
